[Q] Mobile Hot spot - doesn't work - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-T989

I've recently upgraded from a Samsung Galaxy S, and the hot spot worked just fine, I'd connect with my laptop, and get internet access. ( Stock ROM )
This time around, on my Galaxy S II, I can get my laptop to connect, but I can't get internet access...
My plan hasn't changed, just the phone.
I'm tempted to try a custom ROM to see if that will help... has anyone else seen anything like this? Thanks!

I tether everyday brother works great.First off are you rooted. If so go in to t.b and freez tether manager.golden after that my friend
From a glaxay better than yours.

Its not rooted, but neither was my regular galaxy S.

You gotta be rooted on this phone to tether for free. They blocked it on this one.

Good to know. I find it odd that I can connect still, it seems like if it were a block, you wouldn't be able to get as far as connecting a device to it. It's also odd that the older galaxy S isn't blocking it.
I'll try it rooted, thanks.

I work at T-Mobile and customers tell me all the time that tethering and hotspot work for them without a plan. Usually it will let them access it for a while and then stop. I think they let you use it at first to see the advantage of using the service and get you hooked so you will add the paid feature.

I just found this but you have to be on the 5 or 10 gb plan www.phonearena.com/news/T-Mobile-qu...ith-free-mobile-hotspot-from-Jan-25th_id26064

Just a quick question..
On a stock / light tweaked (Mr X's ROM) I was able to tether..
However, when I update to other ROm's like Zombie's I am unable to use Tether or Hotspot. (Giving me invalid sim/mobile data not available)
My Telus plan includes tether and would like to use it .. however it seems like I must be on a TELUS only rom to be able to use it??

So long as you freeze tether manager with Titanium you should be fine. Perhaps you aren't able to do it on Zombie's because they didn't remove it from the ROM.

I mean it will launch the service, its technically an ad-hoc hotspot but it blocks certain ports that denies you acces to the WWW. I think all the new phones you have to pay for it or root, which is why the Vibrant didn't need to be rooted for you to use the tether service for free.

[Q] VZW Nexus and Tethering?

How do you guys suppose they are going to stop it and force you to use their 30$ "service"?
I only ask cause I was experiencing 4g probs on my "rented" RAZR which I have rooted.
I only rooted it so I could use tethering(sql hack) while we were working on my office's network outage.
When I experienced service "cycling" i called. I could not keep a data connection. I had cell service and could receive calls and texts, but data would just cycle thru 1, 3, 4g, then none. When I called the rep did some digging and quickly kicked me to a "Tier2" rep.
So I tell him my problem. he responds "well, could be your SIM(which is free to replace) or to try a Factory defaults reset." He then proceeds to tell me about free apps for backing up. Something that does not require root. I assume something like titanium backup which is a main reason for many to root their phones and big VZW knows this. This is #1. He then proceeds to tell me about amazons app store, which "offers 1 free app a day". Big gripe from companies is that we rooters are "stealing" paid apps(I have stolen 1 payed app, then proceeded to buy it when the black market went under). That is #2. Without me telling him too much about myself, he goes "so, you seem pretty tech savy with the droid". This is #3.
so with 1, 2, and 3 in mind. Have you seen things like this on other 4g devices. I know they can see it(root). I know they have a way to jack your phone if you are "stealing" the entitlements check, but are they using it? The GSM version has builtin wifi tethering. Do you think that these "BUGS" they found which gave us 4.0.1 and 4.0.2 would have something to do with them trying to make sure we can't "steal" our bandwidth we pay for?
Food for thought. Thoughts? questions? concerns?
Hopefully there isn't any restrictions because I occasionally tether my transformer for easier viewing.

It says right in the press release that they are blocking tethering and charging $20/month for the service. Just like every other VZW phone.

I know they are blocking wifi tethering but you should still be able to do wired via PDANet(or similiar). but yes, root will be required. on the Rezound they went as far as to add a system process labelled "tetherguard". fun times

I have PDAnet installed on my Droid RAZR, and it works just fine. No redirecting of websites to VZW page to sign up for a tether plan. When I had my DX rooted with GB, I used Wireless Tether and I was directed to VZW's page for tethering plans. RAZR is not rooted either.
I heard about a program called EasyTether that supposedly will allow you to tether without having to root your phone? Has anyone tried it/think it will work?
Tethering works fine after root - no app required (edit: Its now checking subscriptions, but PDANet still works).
WiFi tethering does not work after root on ANY app* - further development will be needed.
*Pretty sure that blocktether thing has returned.
I've been searching relentlessly for a way to get Wireless Tether for Root Users to work on my brand new VZW Galaxy Nexus.
No dice. The Dev has been notified.
http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/issues/detail?id=1257
If you install the latest BETA version and select the Samsung Galaxy S2 under device profiles, it ALMOST works, throughs in error in the log: "Activating WiFi interface.... FAILED"
Totally crushed about this. Not sure if it's happening due to a VZW side safeguard or if it's simply a progrmaming issue the dev can fix :\

Are you saying that you were able to get USB tethering working, after root with the native app? I am rooted, and when I tried to enable USB tethering, I got a pop up message that said "checking subscription plans". ????

Ya the stock tethering options still check subscription status.
PDANet does work, though, so that's what I'm using until a working wireless tether surfaces.
I'm planning on rooting specifically to use the built in hotspot.
Hopefully someone develops a workaround soon.

I am rooted and can not use the built in hotspot, nor USB tethering.
ROM developers are working on a solution now.
Download SQLite Editor from the market. On YouTube, there are many videos that show how to change the wifi tether permissions using sqlite. You have to be rooted.
I'm not rooted, so I use PDAnet with no problems on my laptop. There is a one time $20 charge to be able to use https websites.
I also use my Bluetooth to tether my iPad and surf the Web that way.

I haven't rooted yet so I haven't experimented, but maybe someone can check it out and see if something similar will work with the GNex.
I don't get the "people root so they can steal apps" argument...you realize you don't have to root to download and install apps in Android, right? You get apps the same exact way rooted or non-rooted.

Sprint Hotspot working for free?

So, I just got my S3 today and immediately rooted it. I mainly just want to tether wirelessly. I don't care to flash new ROMS just yet.
Anyway, before I froze the Sprint Hotspot app with Titanium, I opened up the app just to look around. On my old school Evo 4G it would always tell me I would need to activate the service to use the feature. I just used the free android tether.
I started it up and it is working? I tethered it to my iPad... Is this normal?
I didn't get a notice that it's a paid app or anything.
I checked my account, online, and it still shows wireless hotspot as an option to subscribe to, but it is not listed as part of my plan options.
I am wondering if I use it if Sprint is going to just add it to my bill. When I was with Tmobile I got EDGE data for free for 2 years because of some glitch... I lost it when I upgraded.
Maybe this is a similar glitch? Just wondering of this has happened to anyone else?
No, they can't just add it to your bill. It either works or doesn't work.
In your case, it must just be a favourable fluke that it is working, but I'll wager that eventually down the road you'll get the standard message about subscribing to a hotspot plan.
On a side note, have you tried FoxFi? It's a tether app that does not require root.

I can CONFIRM that the current version of foxfi does not work on an unrooted Sprint SGS3. Also, the android-wifi-tether is not working, either, on a ROOTED Sprint SGS3 (LG2 - haven't tried it with LG8 release yet).
Sprint seems to be trying pretty hard to prevent its users from wifi tethering (without one of their wifi data plans).
On my current phone foxfi and the andorid tether app both act up. They let me connect for a while and then they just stop working. It may be the phone though. If I do usb tether though I can stay one for days.
I cant wait till I get my s3 next week though.

Never tried foxfi unrooted but can confirm it doesn't work on my rooted phone. WiFi tether works just fine for me tho(on all modems: Len,lf9,lg2,lg8). I think the problems people are having is just because of the phone being new. I don't think iT has anything to do with sprint trying to block it.

"*Support for the new Galaxy S3 and the new ICS update for Epic Touch are being worked on. Should be compatible soon in a future update."
My GS3 is not rooted yet. FoxFi didn't work ... neither Wifi, nor BlueTooth mode for Hotspot. BUT, the Sprint basic Hotspot is working even without me enabling it in my account. Hmmm.
Will try to root and try the google base wifi tether sometime soon.

anyone figured out free tethering on tmobile s3? (tethering for root just doesnt work

I've tried lots of threads that said the only way to get free tethering on the s3 is (tmovile) is by rooting then installing "root users tethering" application.
I followed instructions and used "generic ICS" mode - this worked for my first couple attempts at connecting to tmobile tethering... but now it just doesn't work at all - and only in about 1 in ten time it says it is in tether mode is there ever even a wifi signal to pick up - and when it does pick up most of the time now it wont connect (says internet connection problem on PC)
are there any roms that offer this functionality as standard? or any other foolproof apps?
thanks
I'm rooted on stock and have found no working method.

Yes, it is USB. I've been using it since I had the Mytouch 3G. I don't see a need in using WiFi tether unless you are sharing it with other people or using a Tablet. If you are using a PC then I don't see why you wouldn't want to use USB tethering since it doesn't use any battery power.
Rooted using wifi tether and works no problems. Sometimes i do need to restart wifi tether to get the signal. I am using galaxy nexus (gsm) as the profile.

TMO gave me free tethering but it would only work with the TMO tethering app (throttled), not with any other app. After I rooted the other apps worked fine and the root tether app is much faster then the TMO app.
Cool. Thanks guys
ClockWorkMod
First, you will need to download the ClockWorkMod tethering app.
Then, you will need to download the driver for your PC. You can download the driver onto your phone open the file on your PC by connecting your phone to the USB. It pretty much walks you through everything to get started. Takes less than ten minutes and voila, you're online. I searched forever to find this and just discovered it. Now all I need is hotspot so I can use this with my Chromebook. Here is the link to download the driver clockworkmod.com/tether/drivers
Just click Samsung drivers and it will download.
It works great. The only thing that I have noticed that may be a problem is that I got kicked off once. I just started using it so I'm not sure if it happens often, but all I had to do to get it back on was turn off the app on my phone, and on my PC then turn it on from my phone and then click start on my PC.
It's only a trial version, but the full version can be purchased directly from the app once the trial runs out for $4.99. Hope this helps! Enjoy!

Ok I am new to tethering since I have always used Comcast....
I have the unlimited data plan from Tmo.... Unlimited data plan comes with 500mb of free tether.... soon enough it will run out... I need to make sure my tether works AND make sure if I do these methods they won't find out I'm tethering....
I just wanted to clarify my question...
So how do I go about this....? as of now my phone is not rooted but it will be if need be....
Everything online is telling me to root my phone and use 30934983458 different apps... if anyone is kind enough can someone explain please how this process works (I am not a noob with phones just with tethering)

Hotspot - Enabled

Was looking for a good way to enable the hotspot on my ATT Optimus G and tried a bunch of crappy apps. Finally found one that works well so I thought I'd share it.
Wifi Tether (Free) by Müller, Lemons, Buxton (apparently I'm a noob and can't post links so go find it yourself)
After installing it, set the device mode to the Galaxy S3 and presto, it works. My iPad sees it, connects, and works like a champ. Only catches are you gotta root and be careful with ATT snooping your data since they will try to make you pay more for tethering.

The North American ATT version does not have a hotspot button in that drop down menu. Also, because it's ATT you have to pay extra for tethering. The solution I listed above is for those that want to run the hotspot without paying ATT extra to do it.
And an update on Foxfi: Apparently our phone and the SG3 use similar chipsets for network connectivity. Unfortunately, the latest version of Foxfi does not work with the SG3 or our phone for mobile hotspot. You can use the bluetooth DUN instead. Hopefully they will put out an update to add the right drivers.

Well I can say that none of these options work on the sprint varient, as I've tried Wifi tether for root, barnacle, and FoxFi, and all show enabled, but I can't find the device to connect to it. So if it really is enabled, I can't see the SSID. I havn't tried to manually connect to the SSID, but I have run all tethering apps with SSID broadcast on, so I should be able to see it...
Never mind got it working using Generic (wlan0) ICS/JB setting...
Please explain, i am using pdanet on mine with sprint via usb tether . I don't want to root at this time but want to get hotspot free.
1 thing I've found with USB tether is that it only works at half speed of what I get for speed the galaxy s3 that I had prior would get full Speed. Also when connected to my laptop via USB I get hey message stating slow battery charge

Thanks a lot. Works great. I couldn't figure out how to make my devices recognize my network.
The LG Optimus G E971/E973 (which is what this forum is for, NOT AT&T or Sprint) supports WiFi hotspots by default. There is an option to enable and use this natively in the settings application.

^ ya it doesn't work if you don't have tethering enabled on your data plan
most of the new new plans have tethering enabled is a different thing
this thread is for enabling tethering without carrier restrictions
for ex rogers doesnt allow tethering on north american one rate plans
Works thanks

[Q] Wifi tethering issue ATT version

This is the first time I have posted here so I do not know if I put this in the right area, sorry if I did not.
I have the ATT sgh-i467 note 8.0 and I have been trying to use wifi tethering. After doing some investigation, it turns out that ATT blocks tethering unless you pay them a tethering fee or buy the 5 GB plan, What BS that is. I have tried to find a work around and there does not seem to be one.
Has anyone found a wifi tether work around for the ATT note 8?

I have tried it and all the other adhoc wifi tethers, they will not work on the new phones and tablets and the carriers have tethering locked out in the device. I was hoping had found another way to do this without a hack.

I tried this but it did not work, one of the things I could not do was:
Step 10. Scroll down and make sure “MSS clamping” and “Routing fix” are both checked on.
I did not have mss clamping
Did you try this on a ATT note 8.0?

I use the native tethering after freezing at&t all access, you can also delete it if you don't want to freeze it.

I just froze it using titanium back up and restarted it. I went to settings then to more settings and I did not see the native tethering show up. Did I miss something?

SUCCESS!!
The freezing of the att access app worked but it did not bring up the native tether option. I tried foxfi, I could get the computer to connect but it would not go to the internet, so then I tried tetherfy and that worked. I am sending this right now tethered to my note 8.0.
Screw ATT, it makes me so mad that these USA carriers try to screw everyone, I love it.
Thanks,

any way to auto kill allaccess?
Thanks to all on here, I was able to get my tether working. I was bummed though to find it disabled the AT&T data widget, as I used that to keep an eye on data used.
Well, I messed around and here is what I discovered...
I un-froze allaccess in Titanium and rebooted. After rebooting I was able to restore the allaccess widget (though tethering was again crippled). I then converted allaccess from a system app to a user app using Titanium, then forced closed it. I was then able to tether again, and the data widget still remained active. This works great until I reboot the unit, then I just need to force close the allaccess again to tether.
I am wondering if there is a way to automatically force close the program upon startup? This would allow use of the widget to monitor data without having to manually fc the allshare program.
Anyone know how to accomplish this?
