What do people think about using SMS apps that replace the stock app ? I tried Handcent and GoSMS and was concerned about the securtity of my message and where they are going - and then I read this article - http://webdiary.com/2011/09/25/gosmspro/
On top of that while scrolling through screens in GoSMS I saw a screen with a description in somewhat broken English - probably coded by a developer who is not a non-native English speaker....
All in all - I m no longer using these apps.
Does anyone else have an opinion ? Is there a way to customize the JB stock SMS app ?
Thanks

You can change the balloon colour and wallpaper in the stock SMS app. I tried GoSMS and Handcent as well but ended up uninstalling and going back to the simplicity of the stock SMS app.
I don't need the group chat feature of the 3rd party apps since my friends and I use WhatsApp for that but I do miss the additional smilies and emoji of the other ones.
There are known security concerns with GO SMS and all go apps in general. I have done indeepth logcats with handcent and found nothing out of the ordinary with them. With GO SMS they seem to know you are a go user even if you change phones and never reinstall the app on the new phone.

Will check it out, thanks.
All it needs now is swipe to change messages and a way to toggle the pop-up while the screen is on.

Whoaaa looks so much like the stock MIUI SMS app now! Will try this for sure!
Emoji does not work
I have not tested it yet with people who DO have go sms pro,
but, when I send emoji to people who DON'T have go sms pro, they do not see the emoji I attach in the message, only the regular smileys
Edit: I just read again the market description of the emoji plugin. and indeed it is stated very clearly that the recipient should have go sms pro and the emoji plugin.
In my opinion this is totally useless.
One has to convince all of his contacts to install an app before one can use it properly
That's not the right way to implement new stuff.
Imagine you could not talk to someone unless he had your dialer application....
ridiculous

So you suggest they change the SMS-standard to implement their own type of smileys? Remember that SMS is only text, and it is the SMS-app reading the SMS that translates the text 'colon-paranthesis' to an image of a smiley-face.
Ridiculous...

I am not a developer and I don't have knowhow, but I know what sounds unreasonable.
It is very unreasonable to provide you with a tool that only works if your recipient has exactly the same tool.
Can you imagine having an sms app which messages could be read ONLY by people who had the same app? wouldn't you call that ridiculous and useless?
I don't see the difference

Whatever makes you happy
Hey there,
on my old phone (SE Satio) I was able to send one MMS to several people in a blind-copy mode (BCC) so that none of them saw all the other people I sent this message to.
Is this also possible on the Arc / on Android?
What I want: one MMS to several people not seeing each other.
Thank you in advance!
Stock Android messaging app:
MMS multi-recipients see each other.
SMS multi-recipients don't see each other.
You can try the other popular SMS/MMS apps and see if there's a difference.
Handcent: https://market.android.com/details?id=com.handcent.nextsms
Go SMS: https://market.android.com/details?id=com.jb.gosms
thanks for your answer!
i tried handcent, but there is no difference. so the chances for go sms are not good, i think...
although it is technically possible as symbian shows.
i hope there will be an app supporting this feature.
maybe a developer in this forum can look at this issue?! or may custom roms give a better chance?
lets wait
Hey everybody,
So I'm on Paranoid Android and I've noticed an issue. The messaging application (and all third-party applications) really have no good way of sending out multiple messages to lists when the search command is invoked.
The stock messaging applications from GAPPS JB sucks. I can't go into a contacts list window and just *click* off the names of people I want to send the message to. I think everybody has seen this, right?
HandCent and GoSMS are not much better. Let me give you an example.
Let's say I have 100 people from OSU in my phone. Every one of them has a tag called "OSU" in their names in my contact lists. If I try to send a new message with GoSMS or HandCent and type "OSU" in the search box, all 100 of them will show up....
The *problem* is that they will be COMPLETELY OUT OF ALPHABETICAL ORDER! Unlike in the stock Sprint ROM's app!
So does anybody else suffer with this and can anybody help me around this problem? I don't think simply installing the stock application on Paranoid Android will work, as this appears to be the way the contacts list is being perused by the messaging applications.
Hoppingfully yours,
--SadieLNibblesworth
Has anyone here who uses Handcent (or considered it) read the following:
http://infolookup.securegossip.com/2011/12/18/handcent-sms-logs-all-your-send-messages/
I don't like the fact that you have to log-in to gain access to some of the features, but I also don't like GoSMS, so options are limited here.
I've used Handcent for years and haven't seen any issues with it.

I used HC for sometime... about a year or so but became a little bit bloated for the 'additional features'. the article does raise some privacy concerns: if the text was deleted, why would HC keep an UNENCRYPTED DB for it? I am not really sure if the stock sms app does the same thing (as in keep an unencrypted DB for the text messages, I would not be surprised if it did) but the point remains: once the text is deleted it should be gone... forever, not stored in some internal DB where the app itself does not make a reference of it (as in being 'useful' to the owner to retrieve accidentally deleted messages).

OK
I did my best to create an decent and free SMS small app.
This can be useful when you want to quickly read/reply to an text message without leaving your current application.
Features:
-send and read text messages in threaded views
-quick access to 5 most recent threads
-communication with native app (through sms database): sent messages will come up in the native apps conversations
What it doesn't (or shouldn't ) do:
-mark messages read by the small app as read in the main app. (see below)
-anything with group messages
-copy/delete/forward/... messages
-show smileys as images (they're shown as plain text), make links, numbers, etc. clickable,...
I tried to mark the messages as read in the native app, and although it worked and the message was read, the native app didn't update his icon nor delete the notification. The unread counter was only reset when another message came in and was opened with the native app. Because of this I decided to not mark them as read at all, so when you would open the message in the native app all counters, notifications etc. would be properly updated.
To run this app, press the recent apps button and look for the sms icon in the horizontal bar (you might need to scroll to the right).
Although no malicious actions are intended at all, this application is in Beta stage (and will remain in that stage for quiet a while, I suspect) and comes with absolutely no guarantees. It might corrupt your sms database, send messages to the wrong persons etc. Usage is at your own risk and application is provided "as is." I recommend to make a backup.

Cyanogen Mod doesn't have Small apps feature.
But, if you have a halo compatible ROM, then you can use it to enjoy the experience!
Dude this is absolutely fantastic, thank you and well done. You should get it into the play store. Props

Glad you like it. I won't put it in the play store (for now) because I'm to cheap to pay for developer account, just to release something for free.
By the way, if you find any bugs, please let me know and I'll try to find some time to look into it. Extra features may also be suggested off course, but since I'm really busy it may take quite a while before I start looking into it.

I looked into it, but I'm afraid I will have to disappoint you. Android doesn't have an api to support dual-sim phone and even unofficial documentation seems to be very scarce.
If someone else knows how to do this, please tell me.
