I stream my music from my phone to my car's JVC stereo unit via bluetooth. And I've noticed something and want to check with the community.
On TW gingerbread builds the audio stream is very poor. Lots of static and overall poor quality.
Then came the first few ics leaks. All of a sudden music over bluetooth is magical. To the point where I can't tell its being streamed via bluetooth and not aux.
Then came CM9 and AOSP, which also worked magically so I've been using them. But they have semi-poor battery life and issues with SD cards.
So I go back to a TW base ics leak because I like that everything just works and wanna be simple for a while, some of the new FE ones to be specific. And now all of sudden the bluetooth streaming sucks like it did on gingerbread.
Why? What changed? I'm pretty sure that around the FD teens leaks the bluetooth streaming was still fine. Not sure when it started to suck cause I mostly have been on AOSP. Does the modem affect the bluetooth radio? kernel?
I have exhausted all my knowledge and testing and scenarios that I can think of and cannot figure it out. Anyone know why this might be happening?
Anyone have similar experiences?
My Bluetooth music streaming has always been solid. Idk what happened in your case but i believe BT Stack libs were updated or something like that lol

I stream via BT to my factory VW deck. I've had great experience on GB and the latest ICS leaks.
The early ICS leaks I noticed some popping, but I haven't heard that in awhile.

Could you direct me on where they might be located? Would you think it feasible to switch them with ones from cm9 and that might fix my issue?
You think modem is the culprit?

I think a bad bluetooth experience has to do with your receiver. I drive a ford with all the myFord hoopla and it used to work more of less but there were bouts when it was terrible and unusable and i had to pull the fuse to reset it. However there was a huge update to the software and I have not had a single problem with it since then. Streaming music, answering calls, phonebook download, receiving and sending texts all work great for every rom i have tried.

This is what I thought at first. But it doesn't explain why AOSP roms always work perfectly. Doesn't matter which one. No problems, perfect audio Yet GB and now the new ICS leaks work so terribly. It doesn't make sense. And it doesn't explain why TW ICS used to work great and now they don't. I can't figure out what is changing that is causing the difference.
I hated the GGB BT streaming. Too much popping and crackling.
ICS has been very good to me streaming, quality is superb. I haven't noticed a reduction in quality with FE10 from FE07 and earlier ICS builds. What I did notice is that with FE10, the pause/play button on my remote now works again for Google Music, which is nice.
No issues streaming siriusxmonline through Ford sync

Head sets?
I'm a fan of noise attenuating ear buds, ala JVC ha-fr50 whilst I'm driving for podcasts and phone calls.
Are there any decent BT ear buds like that? Something that blocks out a fair bit of the external road noise. As for the mic, I've had some folks say I sound fine but a little distant with the mic on those ear buds, but normal and clear when I practically eat the thing. I've never used BT ear buds or the streaming but from what you guys say, it seems sound quality isn't much of an issue.
No issues streaming BT on GB strongsteves ROM to my Sony receiver.

Thanks for the responses guys. Apparently somethings changing on my phone with each flash or my Bluetooth radio is faulty in a slight way. Not in a big enough way to warrant a replacement uunfortunately. I'll see what I can figure out.

What are you streaming through? My vw is a pita, but after some slapping it around I can usually get it to work.
Early leaks of ICS had popping, but that is gone in the later leaks.

Streaming just music from my sd card. The deck also supports bluetooth calling and connects to that at the same time. I never use it though, unless someone calls me. Connecting to the unit works just fine for all roms and versions, just the streaming quality is drastically different.
I was actually gonna see if i could get the unit to connect just the media and not the phone and see if that helps. I really don't know what else could be causing it. I can't pinpoint anything thats common or reoccurring each time the quality is bad.
All I know is AOSP works. Everytime. But why?

After some digging I found these threads here and here. Both by the same guy.
It appears he was onto a solution or at the very least a cause. Unfortunately, it appears that once ICS came out, the problem was solved by Samsung and it was quickly forgotten with no solution.
Except now, for me at least, the ICS TW roms don't stream properly anymore.
Also, just had a thought. When going between roms, I have skipped over flashing Caulks format all and just wiped data. Never had any problems, but I remember reading back in the hero days that not formatting every partition leaves some old files on the phone, and possibly bluetooth files are stored there? Should I try flashing a tw ICS rom after an AOSP rom without running format all?

I don't think that would be the case, but def worth a try. Lets us know since I would LOVE to be using my BT audio, but it reduced the quality too much for me, no popping etc, but, too poor quality for a good stereo/speakers and my prude-ears
Well I did try everything I could but came up empty handed. Theo only way I can get good Bluetooth quality is by running an AOSP ROM.
That itself isn't a bad thing because I love AOSP, but its a weird occurrence.

So this has been happening over the last 2 or 3 days, and it's getting pretty annoying.
Sometimes when I am listening to music, the playback will just stop as if I've paused the music.
This has happened 4 times today, in different situations.
First, I was listening to a podcast in the stock ICS music player while making breakfast, and the playback stopped 3 times. Each time, the phone was in my pocket, and the screen was locked.
The fourth time, I was listening to some music using Poweramp while texting a friend, and the song I was listening to randomly stopped again.
Any idea what's causing this?
Probably a rogue app. I was having the same problem with RocketPlayer, and it turned out the offending app was CBC Music. Even though I hadn't opened it in days, for whatever reason it thought it needed to steal audio focus periodically to resume a stream. The result was spontaneous random pauses. You can try installing alogcat, and next time it happens, filter the log for "focus" or "audio" or "media" - I forget what I used - and you should find a hint as to the culprit.

This used to happen to me pre 4.0.4. Since then I haven't had an issue.

AHA, I JUST installed CBC music before this started to happen!
I'll uninstall it now and see if that fixes it!
It definitely stopped after I uninstalled that bugger. Clearly the cuts at the CBC have been deleterious enough that they had to go with the lousiest programmers they could find!

Had I seen your post originally from a full browser rather than Tapatalk, I would have noticed your CDN location and then CBC would have been even more likely a candidate
I actually have this problem with certain headphones that started it of no where. I found that I had to unplug then a little bit so that they aren't completely plugged in and then it's working fine again.
If any of you are on lean kernel...
I've documented and provided logcats...which were confirmed by quite a few users.

In recent (3.8+, I believe) builds...imoseon updated his sound control mods (courtesy of ezekeel, so Glados may have the same problem?).
HQ audio seems fine for all users, myself included.
But the sound boost mod causes the headphones to think they're being unplugged.
Low boost (for me) allows my headphones to work.
Medium and it'll cut out in a couple minutes.
High and it'll cut out within a minute.
Highest and it cuts out instantly.
This is ONLY on certain headphones, as well.
Actually, all of my headphones (five that I've tested) are fine.
But if I have sound boost enabled and plug in my AUX cord...it cuts out.
Strange stuff!
And the developers seem not to care too much, sadly...
But for me I just disable sound boost an all is well. So no harm no foul, I suppose.

EDIT: Problem fixed, stupid CBC!
I also had this problem after I installed the CBC Music application. Just uninstalled it and we'll see if that fixes it.
So i got a pioneer deh 6400bt receiver and i got no bass on aokp w ktoons kernel but it works from the headphone jack
just not on bluetooth mode any ideas on fixing it i tried equalizer to turn it up but it does not work there literally is none its not just low.
any one have any ideas or have this same problem connecting to a stereo on bluetooth?
anyone who has subs in a car knows it sucks
I have the same stereo and have no issues at all with bass no matter what rom I've had on my phone. Is your eq on your phones music app adjusted?

I noticed it happened asof 11-11build of cm10 in 1104 it was fine
Not related to the kernel I use the same one between builds

Same thing on my cspire gs3 with latest cm10. As said it started with 11-11 nightly. I have found a workaround, but its kinda aggravating. Either have someone call you and hang up or call some one and hang up. But allow time for the call to come through ur car speakers. Once call is ended music will resume with bass. Someone pull a logcat after this process and get it to a dev. They should be able to figure out why and fix it.

confirmed this with my S3 and deh-6400bt as well. Make a call, bass comes back.
Oh I should have mentioned that I was running the 11-14 nightly.
This is a known issue, apparently caused by a new HAL that bypasses ALSA:
<--well, I was going to post a link, but the ridiculous "newbie" rules won't let me post links or make posts in the dev forums where I spend all my time. What a crock -->
Well, if you go to code dot google dot com and visit the CyanogenMod project, the issue is number 6570.
Feel free to Star the issue so that it gets more attention.
I was trying to pair my s3 to my stock car radio so I could stream music through the phone but for some reason it doesnt work anymore after I flashed a rom. Is there something in stock that I'm missing?
I'm currently on Wicked 2.0 and tried pairing but everything works except the music. I remember when it worked fine on stock but during pairing it gave me a 2nd option during connection called gconnect, gmusic or g something lol. My car is a 2012 that has a2dp capability and it did work the other day prior to flashing so before I go back stock any other ideas?
Well as always try restarting your phone, and maybe delete pairings that you have seen. Sometimes when I've paired, I believe it saves so you can do it easier. Just try deleting that and then retry. I may have it confused with something else though

Be sure to check the changelogs of the Roms you are using to see if that is a known issue, as well as, search the specific thread for the Rom for any issues related to bluetooth streaming issues. Though I'm not familiar with Wicked 2.0, if it's an AOSP rom, they have had a2dp issues from time to time. If it's touchwhiz, you'll want to see if it could be a kernel related issue.
Having the same problem

I went to CyanogenMod 10.1-201330121-EXPERIMETNAL-d2spr-M1 and I have the same issue. I can no longer get Bluetooth audio to stream music properly. It starts fine, but then after a few seconds I get this weird slowing-down and skipping distortion.
I've unpaired, repaired, turned off everything, turned it all back on, taken out the battery, etc. The whole 9 yards, and I'm still getting the same thing every time I try and stream music.

With AOSP roms, such as CyanogenMod, a2dp has been a consistent issue. However, the recent beta of LiquidSmooth, 3.2.1, is what I currently have running on my GS3 and it had some sort of a2dp fix in it that restored streaming quality to bluetooth. Give it a shot. It'll operate similarly to CM10.1.
Flash the latest nightly of CyanogenMod for working a2dp. It wasn't working on the M1.

CM 10.1 is AOSP. Any ROM under the "original development" thread is usually AOSP based. AOSP is what has had the A2DP issues, but recent versions of CM 10.1 & my ROM of choice, LiquidSmooth 3.2.1, have seemingly got the bluetooth issues fixed.
finally figured out just encase anybody ever needs to know but it was called GmusicConnect. It popped up but had to be done under aux out and config >bluetooth music pairing. totally separate menus then the actual phone call pairing
I've been having problems with bluetooth playback with CM 10.2 and was wondering if I can do anything to resolve/improve it. Basically what happens is when I'm playing music (doesn't matter what player) the song will "pause" for a second and continue playing. This will happen once ever 10-30 seconds during playback and makes it unbearable at times. I saw a few other complaints with other devices and CM 10.1/10.2 and a some mentioned it might be an issue with the bluetooth stack in Android 4.2/4.3. Bluetooth seems to work fine on Stock Sense ROM without issues so something in the Stock ROM's bluetooth is right and something with Stock Android's is wrong (I assume).
Does anyone have any ideas on what it could be (if I'm wrong in my assumption above) and if there is anything that can be done to help resolve it?
Just an update on some things that I've noticed in the past day or two. I was trying to record the problem with the Soundcloud app while playing a song with Play Music. When I had the Soundcloud app recording the skipping only happened four or five times during the songs but as soon as I stop recording and left the Soundcloud app the song would go back to it's normal 15-25 skips. I'm not sure if this is at all relavant but it was something I noticed. If anyone wants a recording just let me know and I'll post a link. Thanks again.
Just in case anyone comes across this thread in the future it seems like the RC1 build of CM fixed my Bluetooth issues. It happens maybe once every few songs which is a huge improvement over previous versions.

I updated to a 4.4 ROM and haven't had a single issue with that. It even sends the timing data to say how much of the song has played vs how much is left. what I heard was up until 4.4, AOSP relied on the manufacturers to write their own Bluetooth code so when using a Sense ROM the bluetooth worked fine. I think there has always been something inherently wrong with the CM bluetooth code for some devices which causes the instability. If you can I'd try a 4.4 ROM to see if that fixes it.
