[Q] EVO 4G Bricked - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'll try and keep this to the point, and short and sweet.
My phone was rooted with unrevoked and was running a custom (CM7) rom.
I was in the process of unrooting it by turning S-on with the unrevoked forever s-on tool. This worked flawlessly.
As I was in the process of running the PC3600IMG.zip from my SD card, the flash would never finish. I tried multiple versions that I found online with no success.
I proceeded to try a RUU.exe file instead. Same thing, the flash would not finish and freeze half way through.
During this RUU.exe flash, I unplugged the phone from the usb and I have not been able to access the hboot ever since.
The phone is bricked.
1. Any suggestions or known fix for this?
2. What RUU.exe should I be using? Stats are below
HBOOT 2.10
Radio 2.15.00.11.19

Also, I have done my part doing research on this basically all day long. I have not found anything about this. I have heard though that it may possibly be a partition issue. Does that sound right?

Nothing. I'm unable to access the bootloader. Turning on the phone just goes straight to a black screen with HTC logo no matter what I do.

[Q] Problem after root

So I have rooted numerous Evos but never had this problem. It seems to be getting stuck on the White HTC screen. It will not go into recovery or boot to rom, but lets me use HBOOT. Any ideas guys?
Anything guys?...

On your computer, download a copy of the stock rom PC36IMG.zip, put it on the root of your sd card and load that through hboot....

Ok trying now...
what method did you use? i used the same method for my hardware 2 evo on my hardware 4 (before i knew that actually mattered) and that happened to me. i had to run the RUU to recover it
ps to Vandelay007: Seinfeld = greatest show in existence
Well it booted using the method above. But the main problem with the phone was before I tried to root, the phone was randomly restarting. So I'm gonna try to RUU and then try to root. Unless any one has a more efficient idea.
So I decided to RUU and same thing happened where it would not boot. Gonna try flashing the pc36img again.
pc36img worked and phone is booting up, but still having the problem with random restarts..... any ideas guys?

Have you ever over clocked.. i think setcpu can store a file on your sd card and cause problems.
No the phone was brought to me stock. They did the sprint update and the restart issues came then. No root. I was attempting to root in order to clear data, but didn't get to boot. Now after ruu, I had to use the 3.70 pc36img to get phone to boot. But it continues to reboot and after 3-4 reboots it will get stuck on white HTC screen. No idea where to start.....

Dude numerous people have been having random reboot with their 4 month old evos like me. You should have it replaced. Load a ruu and return it. Because it will get worse as in as soon as it boots up.

Were you running an RUU when thus happened? Was that how you were getting back to stock? How long has it been on that screen? If your sure its stuck, and is idle, I would do a battery pull, and then see if you can get to the bootloader. If you can, try running the RUU again, but put the phone in fastbood mode when you run the RUU. See if a second time gets it.

I was running ruu and it failed. i have tried several times since including battery pulls and no luck. I keep trying to get to the bootloader but its stuck at that screen. It does not show up in my computer either when i plug it in but using an ruu still works.
When trying to get to bootloader, did you push power / volume down after phone was off? If not, pull battery. Put back in and then power/volume down.
You probably already did this but it sort of sounded like you tried getting to bootloader from the screen you were stuck on.

When you shut your Evo off, and plug it into a wall (AC) plug, do you get a charging led? If you can still run an RUU, it sounds like maybe the one you are using is corrupt, or the wrong one all together. Do you know your bootloader version, software version, and radio versions? Likely you need to download the RUU that matches (or is very close to) your current versions.
I'm on the app, but would otherwise link you to a thread. In the dev section, search for "supersonic shipped roms", thread started by Esp28

Yea, the rooting world between different manufacturers differs greatly, apparently. The state you're currently in, you probably have no choice but to run the RUU again. Once you get it to successfully run, and you boot up, back to stock, you'll most likely still be S-off. Now, that's not necessarily bad, unless you're going to take your evo into sprint for any reason. If you leave it S off, if you ever want to reroot, all you'd have to do is flash a PC36IMG of a custom recovery, using the bootloader. At that point, you could flash a ROM or whatever. Also, if you do want to return it to S on, once the RUU completes and you can boot, flash a PC36IMG of a recovery, using the bootloader. At that point, flash the unrevoked S on tool, using recovery. Once you confirm that S is back to ON, then run the RUU again. Then you'll be back to stock, unrooted, S on.

I'm confused, haha. Nothing bad will happen with the RUU when you're sleeping? I think you do need some sleep brotha! Once you successfully run the RUU, and return to stock, you'll most likely still be S off, since you didn't flash the S on tool. This mean's you'll be on a stock ROM, with S off, and no recovery. Nothing bad will happen by leaving it like this, so long as you don't take it to Sprint with S off. Now, if you do just plan on staying stock for a while, you may want to return to S-on, just in case any unpredictable catastrophic events occur, you're better off having S-on, in case you need to take it back to Sprint. You can always root again rather easily. So I guess my suggestion is to flash a recovery once you're up and running, flash the S on tool, and then run the RUU again. Just to be safe. If you want to root again, you know how
Edit: ^^^^All that is providing you get the RUU to run successfully, which I think you will. You just need a good copy of the right version. If that doesn't work, don't forget you have other options. Such as flashing an RUU as a PC36IMG from the bootloader. Also, you can run an RUU with fastboot. So there is a plan B and C if that doesn't work.

EVO 4G stuck at htc 4g splash screen - I searched for 2 days!!!

Hey guy's, well first off I just want to say I'm a big fan of android and especially xda-developers and all the helpful people on this site. I'm having a pretty big issue, one that I searched for a solution for 2 days now using the search function on here as well as google and many others available and I'm in a corner. I have an EVO 4G I bought from someone off craigslist and everything was fine for 3 weeks then 3 days ago the phone died and i plugged it in with no led light showing the charging status. I thought perhaps it was a bad battery so I bought another battery and with the little life the new battery has it turned on and got stuck on the HTC EVO 4G splash screen.
So I pulled the battery out and re-installed and booted into the bootloader menu only to find out more bad news. When I try to boot into recovery from the bootloader menu it goes to the HTC EVO 4G splash screen and stays there forever. I have tried to clear storage, in which it clears and says everything is ok reboots into the HTC EVO 4G splash screen and gets stuck again, So I'm really concerned now and I cant find a solution anywhere I've tried several different methods to flash amon RA recovery, I downloaded the zip file and changed the name accordingly so the bootloader menu would automatically recognize it and it said installed successfully but still to no avail, and I do not believe I am able to manually flash another recovery method because I cannot get into usb debuggine mode from the phone so I'm not sure how adb would even begin to recognise the phone.......... someone for love of all things fancy please help me!!!! I'm struggling!!! lol

If you have a card reader, you should be able to download a Rom,put it in the root of your sd card, rename it pc36img.zip,put it back in your phone and flash it through the bootloader.

Try running RUU update. Download here:
OTA 3.70

Link grabbed from PPCGEEKS user KarlE
this will revert you back to android 2.2, but this should fix your problem.

Do this, in this order...
Charge battery to full (since there's no way for you to tell how much charge there is you might as well be sure it's full...)
Boot to Bootloader
Select FASTBOOT with volume up/down
Press Power button to go into FASTBOOT
Plug phone in to PC
Run RUU.

Then it's possibly a bad battery or simply a brick now, because if you can't charge it normally, doing anything to get it working again is futile... If you have another battery try that, or if you can take it to a shop and try one of their batteries in it... That's all I can think of doing...

Well I don't think its a complete brick just yet the usb port can't be bad if fastboot reads the pc when connected and vice versa, however I went to frys and bought a universal battery charger and am charging the battery to full right now. Also, did you just find it at the splash screen? or did it random reboot or just not boot?

Borrowed Desire won't boot (white screen)

Hi!
First off, I've been searching for the answer all afternoon, but with no luck.
Here's the thing. My GF borrowed my friends old Desire, because her Legend broke.
When we tried to boot it up, it was stuck at the white HTC screen. So i entered Hboot and tried to use recovery with no luck. Recovery was also stuck at white screen.
My friend had removed his SD card before we borrowed the phone. Could that be the problem? Both me and my friend are pretty new to rooting/flashing. All the info he could give me, was that he was running some Modaco rom, and had used Unrevoked to root the phone.
I tried to download a Modaco rom and rename it PB99IMG.ZIP and putting it at the root of our own SD card. No luck.
Then i tried to put the update.zip (CWM file) with the hope that I could then load recovery. Also no luck.
Also tried to plug in USB cable, so that I could maybe wipe phone and install a new RUU. USB was recognized in Hboot (HBOOT USB PLUG status), but no access gained on the computer. I have manually installed drivers.
My friend lives a bit far away. So is there a way I can solve this without his SD card?
Thanks in advance!
- Rasmus, Denmark

bortak> Awesome guide, will check it out right away!
Okay, so now i followed bortaks guide. Created a gold card, downloaded latest recommended RUU, and then ran it while connected with fastboot usb.
At first i had problems when the RUU rebooted the bootloader. The phone shut down and disconnected instead of rebooting. Tried a few times, and finally got the installation to move on by keeping the phone "alive" through pressing vol buttons -although with a black screen.
But by 29%, while updating radio, the installation froze. After some time i unplugged USB and let the installation fail. So now I'm stuck with the four triangles with exclamation marks. I can run the RUU again and again, but it keeps freezing at various stages of installation.
What to do? It's not bricked, so there must be hope?
Can I take a different approach? Through ADB perhaps?
Thanks again!
RUU installation keeps freezing on my pc! Tried to click vol button to perhaps keep the phone "alive", but then I got error 155
Can't seem to find anything on Google about RUU installs that freezes - do any of you know what to do? Can't I use ADB or anything to flash the ROM?

if it is on the radio, then I'm afraid it's bricked.. if you managed to luck out somehow and it isn't, then you could try again.
When i turn it on, the black splash screen with exclamation marks comes on. If i try to turn it on with usb cable plugged in while running XP mode on virtual machine, i see the white screen with version informations. But it only says RUU with an orange background.
Tried to install the new Gingerbread RUU from the HTC hp, but it still freezes. Think I'm out of luck
hmm... stick your phone in the freezer (in a plastic bag) for 5-10 minutes then try again.
I know it may sound strange.. but it may be overheating or something.
Whoever you borrowed this from will not be happy haha

Which RUU are you trying to install?
I had the same issue when I realised I was trying to install a 2.1 RUU on my desire which was a bit silly, I had identical problems. used the correct 2.2 RUU and all ok
voodooboy3000 - Was trying to install official 2.3 Gingerbread RUU.
elliottg61 - It was crashing all the time when he had it, so he said i could have it if I could fix it. I couldn't
I would give the original firmware a go and get it back to stock. was it originally locked to a specific provider? if not use this RUU

Your not even s-off. How did he use anything to root. Granted my experience is with the bravoC. The GSM I'm sure is different. I would find the newest ruu available and try to flash that from hboot. If it takes forever go away. Don't touch it. Don't unplug it. Don't do anything till its done. If it wont flash after 30 minutes your screwed I think. U can try it over again. But if u have an official ruu it should flash no problem. If it gonna flash.
Try flashing a shooter port on the og evo, or flash a rom on the shooter. It can seem to hang on you for a while but it just takes time.
Edit: try this just rename it and stick on root of SD card and boot phone with volume down and power and then leave it be.

[Q] Desire HD Not Booting (Flashing Orange LED)

Hi Guys, hoping someone can help me:
I have a Desire HD that has been rooted with S-OFF, after flashing a new ROM, the device wouldn't boot, when trying to start the device up, it will vibrate 3 times and flash the LED. If I try boot into recovery, it vibrates 5 times with a flashing green LED.
At the moment all I have is ADB access (no fastboot) and can't boot into the bootloader screen.
Through ADB I was able to reflash the recovery using the flash_image tool and I can boot into recovery by connecting the USB cable, I have flashed a few different ROMS through recovery, but the device will still not boot after this, I'm thinking the issue might be the radio image, which I have not been able to flash through flash_image (get -1 error code when trying this).
Any suggestions on how to proceed or what to try would be much appreciated, I'm also not fully clued up on what all can be done through ADB, so any suggestions on that front would also be appreciated.
Did u try runing a ruu.. use AAHK it will help u to flash the ruu provided ur phone is recognised by the computer..

Thanks for your response.
I have tried running RUU from the PC, which I got from here:
http://shipped-roms.com/index.php?category=android&model=Ace
The utility gives an error saying it cannot connect to the device, does the update utility not require me to boot into the bootloader to work?
I also tried downloading a few of the RUU zips there, but so far I haven't been able to flash them, just get an error "Can't to open <Filename>.zip (bad)", however I have checked that the zips are not corrupt, and I am able to flash other custom roms, not sure why it fails on these.
I also tried a bit with AAHK, but couldn't get it to flash anything, I put the custom rom in the folder as per the instructions, but it failed... perhaps I'm doing it wrong? maybe a bit of a walk through on how I would just flash the ROM through AAHK would help.
When you rooted phone did it say if its s-off in hboot. Try entering hboot. Power phone off then power up phone holding power button and volume down button at same time. If you can enter hboot and it says s-off get the rooted stock pd98img zip which also includes radio. Place on root of sd (no folder) power back up into hboot and let it do its thing. Volume up for yes when asked to install power button when asked to reboot.

Yip, my phone was rooted with S-OFF a good while ago, only got the issue recently after flashing a new rom. I can't get into HBOOT, when I try, it vibrates 5 times and flashes the green LED with a blank screen.
Sounds like your bootloader is messed up and not the radio. Search how to push the bootloader img.
Edit: sorry I'm on way to work or I would help you search. But I know there is a thread how to fix bootloader since you cant enter hboot which sounds like its your problem. You need to fix the bootloader. Do a google see what comes up from xda.

Ok, thanks, have looked around, not found anything yet, but I'll carry on looking and see what I come up with, appreciate the help.
Any luck with this. I'm in the same pickle. Running JellyTime and it just stopped working. Will not boot, and recovery mode just flashed amber light. It is an android desire hd.
I would say that its a fried emmc chip, if that isn't the case (I doubt) you can use a JTAG and a riff box to recover the phone over OPST, the equipment needed can be quite costly, so taking it to a mobile repair shop that does jtagging, should work

Are you able to flash any rom at all? I would try flashing a stock rom if possible. The re-root.

Didn't manage to get the device working unfortunately... seemed like the issue may have been hardware related though, hope it's not the same for you and you get it sorted.

Think it might have been, read that a few places as well but just wanted to try what I could first, thanks for the input though.
