Yes, i'm a total noob, sorry everyone. I tried to root my T Mobile Galaxy S2 using the Kies/Odin method, and now i'm getting nothing but a screen that says "Firmware upgrade encountered an issue. Please select recovery mode in Kies & try again". I would happily follow those directions, but now Kies won't recognize my device?!?!? I also can not get back into download mode. I have no idea what to do. Is there anyone out there that can help?
Can you still turn your phone on and use it?

All you need to do is flash it using Odin. Grab the stock rom from the general forum of the galaxy s2 and flash it using Odin.
Sent from my SGH-T989 using Tapatalk
Did/does Odin recognize the phone? If it does then go ahead and flash the stock Odin firmware package and that should take care of the problem. Same thing happenend to me and all you need to do is set everything up just like normal, go into DL mode and give Odin a few seconds to find a com port and hit start...just pretend the warning is not there.
I have the same thing ...
I was doing a stock upgrade through Kies, and my computer decided to be dumb and install a windows update and restart the computer... I now see the same thing, i had the stock rom, but it was rooted, and when I try to go back in Odin, it never recognizes the phone... Kies won't recognize the phone, neither will Odin... Am I just returning this phone or what?
EDIT: Nevermind, I only bought it 2 days ago, so I just exchanged the phone
Yes, you can flash from that screen -- I managed to brick my Vibrant that way a number of times, and as long as you get that screen (or the Android digging screen) it's recoverable. KIES should be able to recover it as should Odin -- if it DOESN'T work turn OFF the computer (all the way off) and restart it then try again.
Samsung's USB drivers have a habit of getting confused and causing flash failures both in KIES and Odin.
Be aware that if you're trying to use KIES and the "latest" firmware is a non-wipe firmware (as the updates from T-Mobile are) it will happily load onto the phone something that will bootloop into the stock recovery and refuse to start! If you get hosed like this you probably need to Odin back to the ORIGINAL firmware so you get a "full" flash, then use KIES (or ODIN) again to perform the update.

Were you able to exchange your device? And if you did, what did the T-Mobile reps ask you? and what did you tell them? I ran into the very same problem. I tried everything but I'm still stuck on that screen. I don't want T-Mobile to think I purposely did something to make the phone that way.
Hope I'm not too late to help: I had same problem and used odin to fix.
Here's what I did:
Download stock kernel in tar form from the Android devel forum. Start odin, click check box in PDA, click PDA button then select the kernel you just downloaded.
Insert usb into your phone (I left my cord connected to my computer). Start phone in download mode (up+down keys). Once it's started ib DL mode, unplug the usb cord, then after just a few moments plug it in again. If necessary, let it set a few moments until Odin recognizes the device (yellow stripe in id:com to the upper left), now click start in odin.
That fixed my problem. After that I read and reread everything I could get my hands on, but I think I tried flashing a i1900 kernel.....big duh to me, but maybe I'm not that dumb after all!! But, soon after I was able to root, and have flashed several custom ROMs since my little bump in the road.

Took mine to a store, they didn't have any white kits in stock so they told me to call and tell them that it doesn't turn on, got a replacement ordered without having to troubleshoot over the phone.
Had that happen the first day I got the device trying to root up. Accdently pulled usb while updating. All i did was Hold VOL UP + DOWN And Plug usb in and download mode came right back up and started the process all over again.
It was a success as.

Worked!

we don't have ICS... so I'm not sure if you're in the correct section. is your phone's variant the t-mobile t989 hercules s2?
don't do anything with kies, go to download/odin mode and flash a fresh download of whatever you messed up on... or I would just flash a complete stock ROM.. the ones ending with ".tar.md5".. that should save your phone.

EDIT: Sorry, this post wen't to completely wrong place. Hope some mod can move this to right section.
I know. There's number of similar threats. I have read them all. Or at least feels like it.
I managed to soft brick my sgs2. I was playing with this new lol boot (dual boot app) from market. I think I pushed something wrong in this app. After that my intention was to make a CWM backup before I start to play seriously with lol boot. At the second I pressed backup from the menu, my phone shut down. Now I'm in a sitsuation whre I can't enter recovery mode. There's just this Samsung Galaxy logo. At the time I had CheckRom v4 installed.
My intention was to flash stock rom via odin. I can enter to download mode just fine BUT odin or kies isn't able to connect to phone. Kies is recognizing the usb connection, but fails to connect it properly. Here's a list what I've tried so far:
- Restart PC (100x)
- Restart Odin (101x)
- Restart Kies
- Reinstall USB Drivers (with Kies and without)
- Trying different computer which has never seen Kies or any Samsung USB drivers
- Reinstalling Windows (W7 x64)
- 3 different USB cables (2 stock Samsung)
- Different USB ports
- Also Nexus S USB drivers as mentioned on another thead in XDA
- Starting odin after USB connection, and before
- Googling with any keywords I have come up
Is there anything else I can do for now?
you mean when you try to connect to odin there is no yellow square ?
maybe try to remove battery for + 90 sec and try to enter in odin ?
ps in this situation you must forget kies since its barely work when everything is fine with the phone ...
Thanks for your reply. Odin doesn't 'do' anything when i connect my device. I'm using version 4.43. When I connect s2, windows install two drivers, Samsung Mobile USB CDC Composite Device and Samsung Mobile USB Modem. I also tried taking battery off. Actually the battery wasn't attached for 6 hours, still no success.
I didn't see this in your list, but have you tried entering download mode and connecting?

can you enter recovery? which recovery you have? Clockwork? 2e, 3e?

Guys. I think there is some Android God that came to help me. After ~36 hours of googling, crying and throwing the phone to the wall, I've managed to solve my problem! As I was googling cheap shotgun for me, I had a vision. Why not, let's try older odin. The solution was v1.83. And right when I plugged in my phone with this odin, it got recognized! At the same second! Nuff said, I'm satisfied. And do you know what is the best part? I flashed with original stock rom and every app, every launcher and so on was STILL WORKING and running!
Thanks to everyone. I'll be more careful next time!
EDIT: How the heck the custom binary counter went to zero? I was thinking its only possible with usb jig?
not older odin! but the one u need for sgs2 (and 1) only use odin 3 v. 1.83 or v. 1.3.
The one you said IS NOT FOR YOUR PHONE. Sorry I missed that text.
So if I understood you correctly, u are saying that I flashed my phone with wrong version of odin (1.83) ? Sorry, I'cant understand english too good, so can you say your point more literally and s_l_o_w_l_y? Thanks
I only use odin3 v1.3 or odin 3 v.1.83.
As far as I know, you cannot use anything else, since it is not made for your device!
I might be wrong, if so, somebody correct me.
Sent from my GT-I9100
So if you're correct on this, the reason why I couldn't get my phone recognized was the wrong version of odin?

gratz!
to reset your binary, there is only one way to do it. u are right, usb jig.
however, beware, i read somewhere saying that GB ver 2.3.4 onward has a new version of bootloader which prevent usb jig from resetting the counter, which mean samsung is trying to lock the bootloader now. however, flashing the old bootloader still helps (claim by others).

Is there any way to unbrick or is my phone just an expensive decoration now.
Thanks in Advance.

If not even adb detects it, i'm pretty sure you're buggered, mate.
did you try and leave the battery out for some 10 min or more?
If adb does not detect the phone after that, then it seems to be a brick for real.
Is your phone stop at the "samsung" when you turn on your phone?
If is this,it's very easy to unbrick
One easy procedure which you might want to try with no guarantee it'll work:
-Remove the battery, microSD and SIM from the phone.
-Prepare the Odin software and your ROM on a known working system
-Connect the phone to the computer with the USB cable.
-With one hand, simultaneously hold Volume down, home and power.
-With your other hand, put the battery in the phone.
I was able to get Odin to detect an otherwise bricked phone this way. I was however unable to get further than the "setup connection" step. Maybe your outcome will be better.

Darkshado

Yes this way usually works. I've tested this way.
that worked for me to on a brick when it didnt even went on, no recovery, download mode etc, after waiting 2 weeks and trying to repair it myself I nearly throw it away, and then suddenly it went into download mode for about 1 or 2 seconds, wich told me the battery whasn't working.. so I started to charge the battery, and hoped it would boot, but it didn't.. using that method given above, I could get into download mode again, and flashes a new stock ROM. now I still have my phone, working.

Dear all. I have a note II that has gone wild. The phone was working fine but then I received a note 4 and put the note 2 aside. Then I was trying to install root and was able to do so by installing TWRP V2.8.3 and everything went smooth and the phone was rooted. I then used the phone for a while but switched to the note 4 after. Now, 5 months after, I wanted to check something on my olde note II. I charged the phone and switched it on but it was stuck on the Galaxy note II screen I rebooted then rebooted but still the same. I went in the TWRP recovery to try to do something but I was not able to because it says that it cant mount storage, cant mount efs, cant mount data, cant mount cache and cant mount system.
Then I have decided to install the firmware image from zipped file but that did not work as it sees that the internal and external storags are 0 and cant mount them.
Then I opted to try and install the firmware PDA through Odin but that also did not work as Odin was not able to detect the phone. Now I'm clueless and not sure what to do the only thing I'm able to do is boot in TWRP recovery and that is all. Can any one help.
My phone had the latest official rom from samsung the 4.4.2
Please help
classic, just search. there is a thread with tutorial how to get your n2 back to life. you could also have sds, but try different odin and flash with pit
Ok now I'm in a worse situation. I have managed to get to the download mode and connected it to ODIN and tried to flash with the stock rom but at the end of the writing process it failed and started to get a message on the phone to connect my device to kies and try again. I tried that but did not do anything. Then I tried Odin again but this time I unticked the auto reboot. then clicked start. The same thing happened as before and writing failed now though my phone is blank it does not show anything and it does not want to turn on and no LED that is turning on nor the charging icon. I searched the net and someone suggested that the battery is damaged. I replaced the battery but still no go. Please I really need to get that phone back alive. I think I bricked it. any ideas or directions to help me with this annoying case. I cant even boot to recovery nor download please help

As I said when I remove the battery and insert it back the phone remains blank no response to any button pressed.
What I did is that my phone was stuck on opening screen samsung screen. Then someone suggested to flash it with the stock rom. So I went to Sammobile site and downloaded the latest firmware. I tried to install it to my phone using ODIN and just before the end. ODIN failed. I tried it the second time and the same happened. then the third time I read that I have to untick auto reboot. I did and tried ODIN for the 3rd time and on the third trial I got the same fail message and then I wanted to boot into download mode for the forth time but this time the phone went dead and not responding to any button press. I hope that this explains the situation

Close Odin - re-start odin - put all the stock firmware files in their respective slots in odin - plug into your phone - and start odin - it should work - it will help you get back to stock.
Once you are rebooted in stock, go thru normal setup - double check to maker sure the Bootloader unlock is still greyed out - and then start over and do it again.
yuo may have had a bad file so I would suggest getting new files for root flash - install magisk ap - go thru the process of patching a new AP file - download the new TWRP posted by Dr Ketan (It is in the TWRP Folders from the TWRP thread) and then try again.
Good Luck.
thanks for the reply, i have tried many times just as you have suggested but every time the flash doesnt move on from '.system image'

Pardon my butting in as I haven't rooted a phone in years, but you might try combinations of different computer / USB port / USB cables. I often seemed to have cables that were usually fine but would mess up firmware flashing. Sometimes a particular USB port on my computer was iffy. And a computer that had been freshly set up and doesn't have much in the way of background processes running can help. Good luck.
ok thanks for the help. i tried another usb cable that wasnt usb-c to usb-c that came with the note 10+. i actually used the old style usb to usb-c cable that came with the note 8 and it worked first time and flashed in a few minutes. thanks again guys
Same thing worked for me. I could not flash with ODIN or restore via Smart Switch. Nothing would work but as soon as I switched to an old USB to USB-C cable, ODIN was able to flash the firmware. Man I thought my phone was bricked for sure.
Just an FYI, Samsung has a backup bootloader screen ( this is the 2nd or emergency bootloader, see this and you are really on your last chance to fix)- the screen you were stuck on. If you have this you MUST flash back the stock rom, (generally the last major update rom if it is a version change like 8 to 9 as the bootloader won't recognise older version). It MUST be matching in CSC or you may very well brick your device completely and as you found out, use the cable that came with the phone. Not all usb-c cables are the same...
Any other flash is generally destined for failure and will result in a Hard brick... Good reason to know what your CSC is...
