Which should i go for?
Dont care for the motoblur but dont care for the 3d,
Heard evo 3d is rooted, but has many issues with phone its self
HELPP
3D has my vote. Personally, I won't even consider a phone with motoblur.

i agree but i would end up using a overlay from a launcher.
ooo tough question! I, personally, would probably go with the Photon. I don't mind motoblur (considering I would just use Launcher Pro Plus). and then root it ASAP
Motoblur is not my first choice of OS but consider you can disable 3d on the EVO 3d if you're not looking to use it.

Deal breaker - Photon has a kickstand.... screw the 3D crap and I checked it out yesterday it also has a 10 hr battery life. It will be rooted and it will be made better. I say Photon or OG Evo... I am an OG Evo owner and I will be skipping over the 3D to get a PHoton

I agree with this. 3d is the dumbest thing, especially on a phone, but you can toggle it off. Motoblur is god awful and sense is just beautiful. I'd go with the 3d
oy this is hard to decifer
Right. The home screen and OS seemed normal at Sprint store. Just the camera was 3d.

im going to call my local store, and ask if i can play around with the two models and see which fits me better
Had 3d, returned, went with Photon
So I had an EVO 4g for several months before the 3d came out. I LOVE Sense. Got the 3d, hated it. Sense was sluggish to say the least, battery life was about half a day, connection problems... 3d was cool but gave me a headache after a while.
So I returned it, got a nexus s right before the price drop, had it for 3 weeks, HATED IT.
So I returned it and got the Photon on Sunday and I'm not looking back. I'm what I would consider a heavy user (though we don't have 4g where I'm at so that's NEVER turned on). I have WIFI, Bluetooth, and GPS on 24/7. I can make it from the time I wake up (mind you it's only been 2 full days that I've had it, today is my 3rd day), until I go to bed before I need to plug it in and charge it. With the 3d, I'd have to charge it around 1pm everyday! (I had the 3d for a week mind you).
Beyond that, it's fast, motoblur is kept to a minimum, I can remove most all of the bloatware (thou I haven't yet), and to me, the coolest feature is the webtop. I bought the HD dock, plug it into my TV via HDMI, my wireless keyboard and mouse are plugged into the back of the dock, and now my phone is the computer running on my tv. And it IS AWESOME!
After having both, the 3d is a disappointment. HTC messed up. A 1.2 dual-core feels like a 1.0 single-core. I liked my EVO 4g better!

I would have to disagree with the kickstand being my reason for the photon, but I would still go with the photon. I hate motoblur but the extra battery stock means even more extra battery life when rooted. Also I know this next question is off topic, but is the kickstand really that important to a lot of people here ? I hate the damn kickstand. I wish it was never on the EVO. Mine is so damn loose already and I have never even used it. I know not many people have that problem, but I do and it's annoying. It just swings out everytime I pick up my phone and it's extremely irritating. I'm considering getting some bolt cutters and cutting that thing as far down as I can.

I hope I didn't miss something but couldn't find a clear place with these comparisons. Some things could be back tracked through the 3D forum as there are plenty of 3D comps here but it is way too tedious.
Looking for opinions from folks that are coming straight from the EVO 4G. Also, if you could, please post what rom you were running on the EVO as well. Be as specific as possible. (data, call recpt, etc)
Thanks a bunch!
Coming from Evo 4G running Cyanogenmod 7:
Screen waaaay prettier and a little bigger
Better battery
Much lighter and thinner
Much faster and more responsive
Call quality same to me
Sound same to me
Cell reception same (though it shows fewer bars)
Wifi reception better
Overall worth every penny. You won't regret it.

It blows the original evo out of the water. The extra ram just makes it faster, the extra storage allows more apps, the dual core is noticeably faster, the screen is a lot smoother (fps wise, you no longer see the very tiny lag when you scroll through apps), the screen is just amazing compared to the evo. oh yea and battery is just amazing. There's no competition when it comes to battery life.
I can't compare the data because I lost my 4g a while ago on my evo so can't comment on the speeds since it's been a long time.
Also the fact that its thinner more stylish just gets chicks all wet :x
I've had the Evo 4G since launch. It's going to be my backup in case anything happens to my Epic 4G Touch. I flashed new roms weekly until I settled with CM7 and MIUI 1.85.
3G Reception (I live in SoCal) - Speed and signal strength very similar
4G Reception - E4GT synched a little faster. Speeds varied, but E4GT averaged better speeds.
Wifi Signal - Seems like I can go a few feet further with the Evo, but not a specific test
Call Quality - E4GT is clearer and louder
Speakerphone - E4GT is clearer and louder
Battery Life - Stock E4GT lasts about 2 hours longer than a super battery tweaked Evo - Low/Moderate usage on E4GT lasted 24 hrs
Size/Weight - At first the E4GT felt fragile because it was so light and thin, but it's built well. The back cover actually snaps flush unlike Evo.
These are the major differences. Screen and speed are on a whole new level. The only thing I miss is the kickstand!
What everyone said plus I can get 4G reception at my desk now. The Evo pulled in zero signal. It also connected to 4G in less than half the time.
Let's see, EVO 4G running >
CM7
CM7Nightlies
Miui (Several Builds/Kernels)
SnS Gingerbread (Great ROM)
Kingdom Revolution
Kingdom
OMFGB
OMGB
Rooted Stock
Myn's Warm 2.2
Synergy
Sprint Lovers
SteelROM
MikG (One of the most important Dev's on EVO IMO)
There really is no comparison. The ET feels so many generations of hardware beyond the OGEVO that it's unbelievable at times.
This phone is the titty bounce, woot woot. FTW, etc and so forth.
For me its an overall upgrade in every aspect.
I don't mind keeping this phone for quite some time.
Literally night and day for me. I no longer need to charge my phone after 6 hours.... and 48GB of memory total
Thanks for the info guys. My biggest concern/hope is that I don't want to go backwards in terms of reception. I don't talk a lot on my phone but I do need to be available. The EVO's for me has been adequate for me as a phone (including battery) but I loved everything else about it.
I may give the user reviews another day or so but I am jonesing hard here.
And +1 to MikG!
Reception is definetely inferior on the E4GT (people that claim it isn't are delusional or mentally retarded). There are numerous threads and posts about how the original EVO has better 3G/4G/WiFi reception. I have tested 2 EVOs vs. 3 E4GTs side-by-side and they all show similar results.
However, it isn't by much. The pros outweigh the cons in this case. Get the E4GT and you won't look back.
I'm just hoping Sammy releases an update soon.

Appreciate your testing but are you relying on the signal bars to determine signal strength? If so, that isn't a proper measurement and can't be relied on.
Like others have mentioned Wi-Fi signal shows 'lower bars' when the phone is the same distance as their Evo but the speeds are greatly improved.
I also picked up the EVO4g on launch and LOVED IT. I was pretty sure that I wasn't going to upgrade for quite some time. Mainly used CM7 but also played around with a few other ASOP roms.
I picked up my ET4g on a whim (and after reading the comparison on engadget) and I have to say that the ET4g is much faster, the signal seems slightly better in my office (that is a bomb shelter and only gets signal if I put my phone in a specific place) and the same everywhere else that I normally got signal.
I am really happy with the ET4g. The only drawback between the two for me so far is that the EVO felt solid in my hand, like I wasn't going to snap it in two or break it somehow. The ET4g seems dainty and fragile. This may be a good thing, and I'm sure once my case comes I'll feel a whole lot better about it. I also am a little annoyed with the button layout swap of the options / home key. I keep finding myself pushing the wrong fracking button.
So even being critical the negatives don't outweigh the positives for me. Now that my ET4g is rooted I love it.
Hope that's helpful!
PS - I'm a female with pretty dainty hands myself so the fragile-ness isn't because I have hulk smash hands.

Ran CM7 with my kernel:
1: The GS2 fascinates me every time I pull it out of my pocket
2: It fascinates me even more every time i unlock it
3: EVO 4g only did for a short time then the battery died lol (battery life was good after gingerbread)
4: Speaker is a lot louder and clearer, the ear piece, people I call can say they hear me much better now.
5: The phone is much faster stock than evo 4g w/ CM7/SavagedZen (which was awfully fast)
6: Camera takes very nice shots compared to the evo 4g
7: WiFI was stronger on the OG evo, no noticable difference with 3g/4g
8: Every time I take the epic out of my pocket im amazed
I too owned an EVO4g since launch and was sceptical about buying this phone.
What I love:
This phone handles .mkv video out of the box! On my evo, I'd try to play a 1.5gig video and it would pixelate and stutter (couldn't watch). The E4gT handles this PERFECTLY!!! NO LAG NO PIXELATION.
This was huge to me as I like to download videos and then hdmi from my laptop to my TV... now, I can just dl directly onto the E4Gt no problem!
Screen- It's vivid... The blacks are rich and the colors are amazing!
Camera- WTF, 1080p!!! Nice!! It's amazing. The color/quality is hands down the best I've seen.
It's much more responsive and faster.
Just a heads up... I sold my evo on craigslist for $200... and with my upgrade I got this phone for free... actually... I got sprint to give me a $50 credit to match wirefly/walmart... so I made $50 (well... only 12 if you could the 38 in taxe).
Go for it.

I did speedtest on both side by side and the E4GT with one bar is way faster than the EVO with 4bars its not even close Ill do it again when my wife gets home from work with her EVO if you want me to post screen shots
And you're assuming I am using signal bars for my testing why?! I never mentioned that. I am measuring using dB levels.

I came from an Evo4G as well and did a signal comparison test using dbs. I cannot comment on 4G but the 3G reception of my Evo is definitely superior but not by a huge amount. Wifi is clearly superior on the Evo. Also after some testing it appears the E4GT is not capable of roaming on the PCS band (bandclass 1) only roams on cellular (bandclass 0) This may not affect many but if your in an area like florida or texas iirc which is straight PCS, no roaming for you!
^^ That! ^^
For me, it's EVO 4G for the win.
I so wanted to like this phone (Epic Touch). The screen is AMAZING. The design is AMAZING (people have commented like "what's THAT?")....in a good signal area, phone noticeably does download pages faster....but not by much. a second or two, which in real world experience means nothing...but it is noticeable.
The battery life.....AMAZING...first smart phone I ever owned that made it through the entire day AND night. Unfreaking believable.
But Data problems....I cannot stand.
The Samsung "glitches" like having to press buttons more than once OCCASIONALY or programs closing out of no where....I could almost live with...
But I NEED data, I use it more that the phone, lol
After flashing Zedomax's v3 kernel and setting setcpu to 1.5GHz, I have to say this phone has gone from amazing to unreal.
Linpack multi threads = 110+
Quadrant = Low to mid 4000s
Nenamark 2 = Mid 40s
CF-Bench = 13511, 4005, 7807
Antutu Bench = 6539
Overall smoothness and snappyness is a sight to be seen.
After having phones such as the HTC EVO 4G, HTC Sensation and the Motorola Photon, I can say without any doubt that this is the best phone I have ever had.
Oh and how could I forget... The display... There are no words to describe it. Hands down the best looking display for any mobile device.
If you are still debating whether to get this phone or not, I suggest you get one ASAP. Trust me, you will fall in love with it.

Agree with the OP on all fronts. This is actually my first Smartphone. I'm coming from an Env2. The phone is simply phenomenal in every way.
Question for the OP and anyone with an overclocked kernel:
Is the battery life better than stock, or just good for overclocked in general?
If you set the min cpu to something higher than stock (I think stock is 200 min, correct me if I'm wrong) like say, 400 or 500, with the V3 rom do you get worse battery life? Is it much snappier?
The phone is insanely smooth, but what I notice on stock is that on first swipe of screens, it seems to have a microsecond of jittery'ness, but quick swipes after that are buttery smooth. Does the min cpu clear some of that up?
That's what's up. Your name seems familiar, have you DEV'd?
Either way, welcome HondaCop!

Have to agree with the OP on this one. When I unboxed this phone it was like a godess came out of the box. After playing with it for a while it is just amazing.
only thing that matters is battery life and this phone is damn fast
does that kernel deliver better life?
THERE IS A GOD!!!!...he or she depending on your beliefs..bless us with the of the year...HELL TO THE SAMSUNG GALAXY S2 EPIC 4G!!!!!!!
1. Battery life sucks. I had to bring a charger to work. Battery life sucks so bad that I switched back to my Thunderbolt, a phone not known for its great battery life either, but at least I'm no longer a slave monitoring my battery use. I can stream music and browse or game at the same time without needing a charger close at hand.
2. The gnex screen is a disappointment, especially at low back light levels. And I thought that SAMOLED pentile matrix screens were supposed to be energy efficient compared to normal LCD displays, but I've never seen such a battery life sucker in a phone. Inverted apps and black backgrounds don't help.
3. CDMA/LTE Radio. Not horrible, and getting better. Pretty much all if my LTE problems were network related. CDMA has been flakier for me but the 4.04 update seemed much better for the short time I used it. All CDMA/LTE combo phones suck battery life.
4. Apps/Market/ICS. So many of the games I've purchased are incompatible with the gnex its laughable. I must have $50 of games that I can't play on my gnex.
5. No good car and home docks.
This criticism post isn't meant to rile up gnex fanboys. My intention is to give valid criticism for people doing research before buying a new phone.
The VZW Nexus is a high maintenance phone, which needs users to constantly monitor battery use, make compromises on how they use their phone, and need chargers close at hand, but there are no good charging docks. Many games are incompatible with the gnex too.
So due to the hassles of using a VZW Nexus, I've gone back to my Thunderbolt as my every day phone, and my gnex has been relegated to being a mini wifi tablet that has a charger nearby.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus via WIFI
You lost me when you said you went back to a Thunderbolt and were previously *****ing about battery life, LTE radios, and the like.
Logical.....not.
Battery life is increased with the 4.0.4 patch.
Games not working isn't the fault of the GNex, its up to the game dev to update their game to make it work in Ice Cream Sandwich.
Poor radio...that's subjective. I get great reception in my town. Its not necessarily the phones fault you get poor signal. Also, signal strength is improved in the 4.0.4 patch.
This phone may not have the most features forever, but that's the point. Nexus phones spur innovation in the other OEM's.
Sorry you're disappointed.
Funny, I came from a Thunderbolt and I thought it had decent battery. Will disagree on the fact that this Nexus is worse than that; it's been better (much better) compared to a Tbolt.
Whatever floats your boat though. One less battery thread then I guess.

1. You're doing something wrong with your battery. I'm consistently getting 1 day on the battery and still having some juice left over, and each GNex owner I know personally is getting the same results.
2. Backlight? You do know how AMOLED works right? On power efficiency, remember how you've got an HD display on the GNex? it has more pixels to push than the TBolt. It has already been proven that "pure black" is more efficient, but no one does that. Look at the power draw of the Rezound screen, it's ugly.

What don't you understand? I'd be happy to explain it to you.
On my thunderbolt, I was able to stream the entire Super Bowl (commercials and halftime show too) over LTE with lots of battery life to spare. With my gnex, I would have had to put it on a charger or changed the battery some time in the 3rd quarter.
With my gnex I'm constantly making compromises on my phone use. Do I want to stream music or do want to browse or game? With my thunderbolt, I don't need to worry about making those compromises, I just stream music constantly, and browse and game without constantly monitoring battery usage.
With the vzw gnex, no kernel or rom yet has really helped the battery suck, but my Bolt on stock Sense sips on the battery by comparison. And as I mentioned in my OP, the Thunderbolt isn't known for good battery life, only in a head to head comparison with the gnex does the Bolt seem to have efficient battery use.
Do you still have a Thunderbolt? Go back to using that for a week. You'll be amazed at how much more use you'll get out of it compared to the gnex.

Is name calling allowed in this forum? It certainly isn't on topic, which is my valid criticism of using a VZW Nexus for over a month and a half in comparison to my Bolt.

I'm more interested to hear what the phone has to say about about you as an owner. And blame the game devs...

People researching their next phone purchase may care. And that's my intended audience.
With all the "I get great battery life" posts in this forum, a contrary opinion is needed, especially when you see the screen shots with hardly any display use.
I get great battery use too, in airplane mode and on standby, but if I want to use the display and 4g, the battery sucks much much faster than the same use on my Bolt. That's a fact, Jack!

I'm using the 4.04 leak now. CDMA Radio seems more stable. I get great LTE signal where I use my phone the most, so constantly switching radios hasn't been a problem, nor a major battery drain for me.
My problem was with CDMA flakiness when driving, but 4.04 seems to have stabilized that, which I did mention in my OP.

Funny, I came from a Thunderbolt and I thought it had decent battery. Will disagree on the fact that this Nexus is worse than that; it's been better (much better) compared to a Tbolt.
Whatever floats your boat though. One less battery thread then I guess.

How is the VZW Nexus better than your Bolt? Please give an example on how the gnex battery usage is " much better," because I can stream music constantly while browsing or gaming for hours more on my Bolt than I can on my gnex.

Im coming from Sprint to verizon. IM debating between the Nexus and the Rezound. I see that the Rezound has a faster processor by like .3 ghz. Does that little bit make a difference? What about s-off, full root, unlocked bootloader etc etc. Does it have all of that too? Any reason to choose the nexus over the rezound?
Just came from Spurnt (uhh, Sprint) and a MoPho phone myself.
(I will never in my life own another Motorola phone no matter what)
You will have zero problems with rooting or unlocking the bootloader (s-off).
It took me all of 10 minutes after I got the phone home and those 2 along with wireless tether were up and running and have had zero issues with the phone.
It flat out rocks.
BTW about 40Mb down and 18Mb up speeds on LTE in my area
I have had so many HTC phones and I was sick of sense so I got the nexus both solid phones mater of preference

If you care about unlocked bootloader the nexus is the only way to go. Plus the nexus will always have more development support than a one off device like the rezound.
Also I think the omap processor at 1.2 is faster than the scorpion at 1.5

If you read up on the galaxy nexus omap chip, you'll find or that the natural clock speed is 1.5GHz. It's actually underclocked on our phones. Most custom rooms allow you over clock if you want.
Honestly, with pure Android, speed is not an issue, especially with all the great devs. Remember, a great development community can really make our break a phone. That's why the og evo was so good, because of the great developers.

I switched from Sprint to Verizon about three weeks ago, and I haven't looked back! I've been wanting a Nexus phone for a while now, Sprint sucks in my hometown (Longview,TX), and I bet on Verizon bringing 4G here soon - and I was right! We just got 4G (unofficially) a week ago, and were among the cities they officially expanded to on the 16th!
My point is, switch to Verizon and get a Galaxy Nexus! They're awesome. I immediately put CyanogenMod 9 on mine, and I've loved nearly every minute I've used my phone. I wouldn't call it "always buttery smooth," but the hiccups are hardly noticeable.
Oh, and I highly recommend Apex Launcher! It's currently rated 4.8/5 in the Play Store from over 2200 ratings, and over 1900 are 5-star ratings! It's highly customizable.
The worst part of my switch was going from a $90/mo unlimited plan with Sprint (after taxes) to a $110/mo 4GB plan with Verizon, but it's worth it.
Dude, by something already! I figured by now you would have been way on your way with the GN and Verizon...lol
Anyway. I got the GN, my wife has the Rezound. Both are good phones, the GN is definitely the better phone for me. The Rezound was the better phone for the wife.
The GN feels faster then the Rezound even though the Rezound has a 1.5ghz dula core vs a 1.2ghz in the GN. The GN just feels like a flagship device where the Rezound is just another HTC phone and it is almost like if you owned 1 HTC phone it is like you owned them all.
The screen is way better on the GN as well. Super Amoled over SLCD any day. The one thing the Rezound does have is a better radio. The Rezound will pick up 4G in low signal area's and keep a good signal with it where the GN will drop me to 3G.
There is pretty good development for the Rezound as well and they just got a release candidate leak of ICS yesterday...There is still nothing like running pure ICS that we get on the GN though.
So either way you will have a good phone but I would choose the GN 7 days of the week. Now can you please go buy something?
true, I should have bought something by now. I just dont want to get something and then wish I had gotten the other one.

Like I told the guy in the other thread, buy the GN first. If you do not have any reception problems then you will already have the better phone. If you encounter any problems then exchange for the Rezound.
okay but what designates a better signal? What dbm should I be after?
Thanks guys.. Im hesitant with the Nexus because IVe heard about samsung not rolling out updates etc etc as fast as they should.
Believe me when I say that the Nexus will run faster than the Rezound, even on just stock. Sense is a system hog if I ever saw one. Plus, like others mentioned, it's easy to OC the Nexus, however it runs so smoothly that I've never had to. Keep in mind that ICS is optimized to take advantage of multiple processors, unlike GB which doesn't.
Additionally, if you can afford it, I suggest Verizon over Sprint, although as a disclaimer I've never had Sprint so my opinion comes from what my friends have told me about them and my experiences with Big Red.

When I talk about signal, I am really talking about the devices that seem to have bad hardware. My first GN would literally drop 4G in a good area every couple of minutes. It would lose signal and then it would come back.
My replacement is 100% fine and I have had it for 2 weeks now. Trust me, you will know if your device is bad. Also, this was only noticed on 4G. 3G had no issues.
Having said that, my wifes Rezound pulls in better dbm's in our house which is in a area with bad signal for any carrier. On Sprint I needed an Airave or I couldn't use my phone in my house...
Now I can use my GN to make calls and while the signal is pretty weak it still holds and calls sound fine. I am usually around -100 through -120 in my house. 4G sometimes will come on but it has a hard time sticking. My wife's signal in my house is usually around -93 and holds 4G signal throughout my house.
I am not really concerned as I have wifi in my house and have no problems with my phone or texts on my GN at home and in better area's 4G never drops.
I still would never give up my GN for a Rezound. If my 2nd GN had the same issues as my first I do not know what I would have done. I might have looked at the Razr Maxx but the GN and Verizon were the main reasons I made the switch from Sprint.
After owning HTC phone exclusively since the ppc-6600 all the way through the EVO 4G and 3D, these devices just feel stale to me. If I didn't own these HTC devices before, maybe the Rezound would be more exciting but it is not.
Everyday I fall more in love with my GN. The latest thing is being able to run the GN in tablet mode. This just put the device over the top for me and made it even more user friendly. Having the bottom bar handle the on screen navigations as well as all the notifications, it has become truly amazing.
Thanks man... Imay get the GN and my fiance may get the rezound..
So to get this straight, I would know if I have a bad nexus by the 4g signal dropping out? Would it be anywhere? Or just where the 4g signal isnt great?

You'd have to compare it to another Verizon LTE phone next to it and see which is better. The GN will probably have a lower signal. Just how it is.
Okay well I still havent gotten a straight answer. Is it a lower signal, or does it just show the ACTUAL signal like all AOSP roms do?
i would easily say the nexus, i made the same switch your doin, and i LOVE IT!!!! My bill is cheaper than it was with sprint, the service is waaaaaay better, the nexus will get early updates, and the dev support for it is massive! You won't regret it
Seriously why hasn't anyone mentioned that although the rezound has 1.5 gigs its a couple of a8 cores and not a9.
a9 cores @ 1.2 gig clock speed easily out performs an a8 with 1.5 gig.
Just add a poll on the thread.
I vote for the Nexus..

It shows an accurate signal. So do other phones if you go into the proper settings menu. It is also likely to have a lower signal if compared to RAZR or Rezound. Just how it is.
