Hey guys. I'm having some issues installing kernels. I'm aware of how to do the process but aside from the CWM kernels and the stock kernel that's installed when you odin back to stock every other kernel I flash results in a boot loop.
Things like ROMS and zips install fine in CWM but as long as the file has a custom kernel I get boot loops.
Anyone have any idea how I can go about fixing this so I can install ROMs on my phone?

Probably because your well on your way to bricking your epic.. kernels are rom specific just cause theres many out there doesnt mean you can flash anyone over any rom..
I wouldnt really play with cwm just yet phones to new... alot people are bricking this device fasst ..I was one of them.
If u wanna play safe use stock rom with zedomaxepicv3 1.6 oc kernel flash that tar in odin after u go back to stock eg30.tar
give development some time ..let others go through trial and error.
Spare your device she will brick trust me.

Nothing that I'm doing should result in a hard brick with this phone. The issue isn't that I'm flashing different kernels with any random ROM. It's that ROMS don't install properly because of the issue my phone is having with kernels.
I've tried to install Zedomax's latest kernel immediately after going back to the stock eg30 tar before and I wasn't able to do that either. It resulted in me getting a boot loop as well (that had to then again be fixed by flashing the eg30 tar).
It's a weird issue that I don't see others having on the forum and honestly I think it's possible that it might be a small fix such as flashing a particular tar or possibly formatting some area of the phone, but I'm just not sure how to address the issue.
Heres what u do worked for me ok
Step by step
Go to stock with eg30.tar its a 435-450mb file
Use the odin version 1.85 reccomended
Enable usb debug on epic
Get into download mode
Only select pda and choose the zedomaxepic v3 1.6oc kernel it is a tar file should be in android dev section or google it.
Only selct auto reboot should already be checked in odin , do nothing else and do not use any pit file.
Then you should get a successful flash then phone boots up as galaxy s 2, gt 19100 with a yellow triangle that means it flashed

Yes samsung is known for that once ur on a kernel made for the device bit its really from a diff phone cause zedomax is a gti9100 kernel i a way u cant flash rom zips over a custom kernel
You can only use rom zips over stock kernel
The only way to flash zips is be on stock rom stock kernel first.
The best method is odin not cwm

If I do this process in the order you have it here then when I try to install Zedomax's Kernel it hangs at zimage in ODIN and I have to disconnect the USB. The kernel never flashes and it stays on the official Samsung kernel.
This stuff is frustrating
Weird weird... It shouldnt hang anywhere as long as u see yellow com port in odin and you have correct tar put into pda only dont unzip anuthing just put download into winrar choose pda and select the downloaded tar.. When done itl say pass in green

Make sure its the complete prerooted zedomaxepic v3 1.6 kernel no other version and it must be a .tar file not zip . In pda only let it sit sometimes it will fail keep trying but make sure ur on stock rom first..
That kernel willl give u over clocking ..root and cwm recovery all in one

try another usb port, and/or another cable...
and you can just flash the stock repack with CWM to avoid flashing zedo first

I know what to expect in ODIN during a correct flash, I've used it multiple times, but for whatever reason, that particular tar file always end in a hang at zimage.

I have the right file. And I already know how to obtain root and CWM with the few kernels my phone can flash (Which now that I think about it are mostly stock kernels with slight modifications). Overclocking isn't that important to me but overall my main problem is that when I'm in CWM I can't fully install ROMS. They install but do not flash over correctly/completely and cause boot loops. Other zips flash fine.

I've tried multiple USB cables, all result in the same thing. I've tried to flash the stock pack with CWM that you're talking about before and that works fine. i was able to root afterwards and everything but once I tried to install a ROM when I'm on that kernel. I get the same thing, boot loops.
are you sure its bootloops and not just taking a long time? because rebuilding the dalvik-cache can take a while and loop the bootanimation..

I can't imagine rebuliding the dalvik-cache should take in excess of 10 minutes or more (if it can, correct me). It just hangs at the Samsung Boot Animation that has the yellow triangle with the exclamation mark.
(I've left the phone on for about 15-20 mins before at this screen) I can only then access download mode,nothing else. No recovery and no booting.
Maybe just stay stock for now till development furthers..

I'm not experiencing the boot issues but, I found there is a lot of information out there regarding kernels and rom's. This is good stuff here. By doing this method, will it root the phone? After doing this, I would like to get rid of the yellow triangle. Mostly just annoys me. Is there an easy way to do that?

The kernel is pre-rooted so, yes it will root the phone.

Have you tried going completely back to stock? It will remove root and cwr. Then try odin chris41g repacked stock pulled kernel with cwr (can't remember if it provides root or not) but you xan always flash the root zip.

I've had to go back to stock multiple times. Every time I've tried to flash a ROM it's run into a boot loop and the only way that I can access the phone again is to ODIN back to stock, install one of the few kernels I can that has CWM and restore a backup. The kernel you mentioned in your post is one of the few my phone will take but others like the Lost Kernel and Zedomax's OC ones will send the phone into a boot loop.
I have read that some people prefer to use Mobile Odin Pro to flash roms, kernels and such in place of CWM. I know how to use it when the files are in the tar format but I am wondering if there is a way to flash roms that are in the zip format and made for CWM? Am I missing something or did I misunderstand what I read?

Not really sure about this but if you use root explorer and press and hold on a file it will give you an option to convert to tar file or something like that. Idk if that would work or not but just happened to notice it last night.

although rootexplorer does format it into tar it won't flash via odin or mobile odin. the only way I know of is to have a linux partition on your computer. other than having linux it won't work. it may be in tar format but it needs to know where to put those file in which place. and just converting it to tar doesn't work. I have even tried putting a pit file in with the files in a tar and it didn't work.

lol thats not true.. yes .zips are made for cwm, but if you notice in mobile odin pro it can actually open certain types of files and extract the different parts of it to flash such as kernel, modem, etc. etc. this is how i flashed a zip through mobile odin pro, however for whatever reason gave me issues with the modem.. on ICS, I had to flash rogue fb17 kernel to get cwm back, then flashed the fb21 modem through cwm. either way, there is a way to extract the files from the .zip to be flashed in mobile odin.. there is a setting in the app that says open and extract the files.. have a look see! besides all that, I love mobile odin and prefer to use it when possible over using cwm anyday..
well I do not doubt that you used it. however I have many roms in. zip format. when I try to use the extract feature the only ones I can extract from are the. tar and tar.md5 files. maybe I'm messing up or something.
I have tried to open zip files using the method you suggested and it's like it doesn't see the zip file in the directory I put it in.

when I do it I look in the directory and it only sees the tar files I have of the stock tars I have in the same directory. I have looked into it on chainfires thread and it makes no mention from what I have seen of flashing rom zips.

ya it is a full rom. but its in tar format. I was under the impression from the other poster in here zip were flashable too. I realize that what cwm is for. I have used mobile odin many times. and I'm almost positive it does not flash zips. just figured if he did it he might want to share.

I could flash my kernel using 'zImage' file using Mobile ODIN.
TLR Version. Don't. If it was meant for CWM use it in CWM.
I don't think you guys are going to have any luck with that. When (Mobile) odin flashes a tar file it is flashing a factoryfs.img. When CWM flashes a zip it copies the files over.
You could, in theory*, convert the flash-able zip into a flash-able tar by moving the files in the zip into a proper factoryfs.img or a system.img... but its not really an easy task and you're VERY likely to end up with a (almost**) permanent brick and or paperweight.
So just don't. You can flash Kernels and full system restores tars with it, but other than that, I wouldn't play with it.
* I say in theory because I'm not gonna test it. I don't see why I wouldn't, but there is no reason to risk anything.
**You could probably unbrick it with a JTAG, but that is a whole different mess.
Clearing cache before flashing
I'm a beginner. My last cell phone was very old and could only make calls, and I jumped into the s3 because I heard it's a good phone.
I've figured out how to root it and unlock it, and I have installed mobile odin pro. I copy the zipped rom directly to my phone and start mobile odin pro, which asks me if I want to unzip the rom and install it. Well, yes, I do. So it goes about doing its thing, reboots, and fails. I have tried installing three different roms with the same result each time.
My question is this: will mobile odin pro automatically clear the cache, the darvik cache and so on? Or should I do this manually from within the mobile odin pro app before flashing the rom?
Any help will be much appreciated

I hope hoping to get some discussion going regarding Mobile Odin and how it's working for people on our device.
So far, I've exclusively used it to flash kernels, but has anyone successfully flashed a full TAR with it yet? More specifically, has that full TAR also flashed your modem? I tried flashing a modem.bin file last night using MO, and while it went through the whole process in a way that appeared to be normal, upon reboot baseband was unchanged. I've read about others experiencing the same thing.

I also read about some kernel panic mode reports when trying to use MO to flash the latest FC05 TAR.
So if you've used Mobile Odin, please share your successes and or failures. It's obviously a great tool but I'd like to identify where it's working and where it may not, for our device specifically.
I have used it going from ics back to GB ....but have only been flashing eg30 stock tar and then el26 cwm kernel .....then I boot into recovery and flash cm 7 if going to aokp or whatever ....I have tried fc05 & fb27 modem and they don't work it goes to like it is flashing it but finishes real quick like 10 seconds .... And normal Odin takes like a minute or more to flash modem...

I have been using to flash kernels and modems up until FC05. For some reason it will no longer flash modems, like said, it goes through the motions.
Ah, just remembered, used it to flash 27 tar, whole ROM. Flashed modem/kernel/system no issues. Even used it to open that .tar and just flash the modem or kernel once or twice.
The only thing that scares me about MOdin is getting a force close during a flash and hosing my phone.

I don't think that's possible. It seems to get the files ready then actually does the flashing on the reboot, as some kind of preboot flash function. When I flash a modem for example, upon reboot a Mobile Odin screen comes up and does stuff then the phone's OS boots.

All the Tars after ek02 are pre rooted .... Install mobile Odin and flash a kernel with cwm ....

As long as its ics and only ics ....GB kernels won't work and vice versa

Hmmm. So it sounds like you can flash a modem as a piece out of a TAR image, but not from a modem.bin file. I've tried the modem.bins for EL29, FC21 and FC27 all with the same result, which is no change.
You can pick parts out of a .tar.
I've had no luck with .bin files either.

Could you link to the pre-rooted EG30 Tar you have? I downloaded this one: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=20089082#post20089082
and not sure if its pre-rooted. So when I flashed it via Mobile Odin I played it safe and just manually re-rooted via my Mac. I should have just checked to see if it was, but it didn't hit me at the time that a simple terminal command would confirm.
It would be nice to learn how to package things up to flash with mo and avoid recovery all together. Not even sure where to begin on that one.

Indeed, but you need to be EXTREMELY careful, like even more so than you do when modifying a .zip file.
.md5, .tar, etc. -- those are risky business to tamper with, unless you can repackage it and sign it correctly after adjusting, removing, and what have you.

I don't have a pre rooted one ...mobile Odin pro has persistent root .....when you flash it stays rooted and mobile Odin stays installed and ready to flash kernel

Yes, that's what I meant. Have opened to flash kernel. You just Deselect the modem or system or whatever you don't want.

Got it. I knew Pro offers that functionality but thought maybe there was another Tar file that I didn't see. I planned on purchasing Pro to support the developer and will be doing it sooner, rather than later now

Ok, so I flashed a ICS ROM and as usual I want to flash something else(I admit its a bad addiction! ). Unfortunately, my OEM cable isnt working and so odin can't recognize the phone!
SO I have mobile odin installed but I need the correct files. Never had to use it until now, I thought I had a correct kernel/recovery to flash but it says "partition not recognized"
So please mind that I will have to download the files DIRECTLY from my phone. I will seriously LOVE anyone who can help me out
Go to the wiki, found in the sticky section, you're looking for el26 kernel with cwm tar file. In mobile Odin, click kernel and find the file. Check md5 and go. During reboot, Press and hold volume up and power till you get to cwm. Do your wipes and flashing there. Good luck!

Assuming you are using something from the OneClick thread, you need to unpack the file first, either double-click the .exe in windows to unpack or use zarchiver on android. The resulting file can be use with Mobile ODIN using Open File.

There are several apps like Wifi File Browser that you can install on your phone that will allow you to transfer files back and forth from your pc/phone if necessary. Really nice to use too.
Accidentally flashed GT-I9100_OLD_BOOTLOADER.tar kernal on SPH-D710 using Odin. Was trying to get rid of Yellow triangle, which worked. Now phone will not connect to Odin.
Cables are fine. Drivers are fine. Phone connects to PC and can explore the internal and external storage.
Phone is rooted and is not bricked. Phone only has stock recovery, so not sure if rom or kernals can be flashed that way.
Help!!
Can Stock Recovery "apply update from sdcard" be used to flash correct kernal, unroot to stock using HOME_SPH-D710_CL852097_user.tar.md5, or re-root using SPH-D710.EL29_CL852097_ROOTED-OneClick.exe can be flashed?
If not, how else can this be fixed?
You're at risk for a brick.....you can try to use mobile Odin to install one of sfhubs one click installs to your phone.

Accidentally flashed GT-I9100_OLD_BOOTLOADER.tar kernal on SPH-D710 using Odin. Was trying to get rid of Yellow triangle, which worked. Now phone will not connect to Odin.
Cables are fine. Drivers are fine. Phone connects to PC and can explore the internal and external storage.
Phone is rooted and is not bricked. Phone only has stock recovery, so not sure if rom or kernals can be flashed that way.
Help!!
Can Stock Recovery "apply update from sdcard" be used to flash correct kernal, unroot to stock using HOME_SPH-D710_CL852097_user.tar.md5, or re-root using SPH-D710.EL29_CL852097_ROOTED-OneClick.exe can be flashed?
If not, how else can this be fixed?

Are you putting your phone in download mode prior to using Odin?
And Dante is right. use sfhubs ff18 one click.

Mobile Odin makes sense in this situation. I searched the market and find ChainFire's [root] Mobile ODIN Pro. Is this the only one/the one you recommend?

Yes, I am putting the phone into download mode prior to connecting to PC. I don't have any problem with this my other phone, so I know it's not my method or cables.
I have SFHUB's oneclick downloaded, hopefully I can flash it with Mobile ODIN.

The instructions in the first link mention using ZArchiver to unpack the .tar file. Should this be done, or can Mobile Odin do it?
It looks like Mobile Odin can do it under the "Open fie" option.
Your phone won't connect tdin cuz you flashed a bootloader for the wrong device(international gs2). I don't even know if flashing a bootloader thru mobile Odin is even possible. You may need to send it to have it jtag'd to fix this oopsie and hopefully you learned a valuable lesson, which is read, read again get ready to proceed read once more and then read it again, then read it while you're doing whatever it is you're doing. With so many variants of the gs2 floating around reading is your best defense against fubars like these
ETA: no mobile Odin won't flash a bootloader, so Jtag will be your only option and it runs ~$50. Check out mobiletechvideos for jtag service

Thanks for your reply. I agree and understand about reading and being careful. I try to do this, but unfortunately find it very hard to locate the correct information.
Can you give me a little clearer explanation of what "send it to have it jtag'd" means, and how to do it?

I take it, that a One Click from sfhub won't include a bootloader.?
Sorry, missed the second half about the jtag.
Even if you find one with a bootloader mobile Odin doesn't support the file types for them unfortunately. Mobiletechvideos.com I believe is the address, they have a jtag service, you will have to ship them your phone and pay somewhere in the neighborhood of $50, they will hook the phone up to a riffbox and rewrite the emmc chip to force the proper bootloader and partitions back on. Its really the only option except sending it to asurion, but that's $100 and you get a refurbished device, jtag is only around $50 aand you get your own device back.

Last question. I understand the Bootloader is wrong meaning I can't flash .tar's in Odin, but would Mobile Odin allow me to get the correct Root with Clockwork Recovery, which would allow me to flash rom, radio and kernal zips through recovery?

Yeah you can flash a rooted oneclick tar in mobile Odin, or flash just a kernel like the el26+cwm.tar and then flash a rom and modem thru the cwm recovery in the el26 kernel. What version of android are you on? GB(el29, ek02, eg30) or ICS(ff18)

The phone is on Stock EL29. I was trying to ultimately get ICS FF18 and want to stay rooted to have hot spot. I mentioned a sfhub stock, rooted, w/ clockwork recovery above. Have not found a similar "one click" for FF18. Suggestions/links?

You cannot be serious....
as long as your alrready rooted you can flash a .tar or cwm kernel in mobile odin and use the custom recovery to flash the rom and other fikes that you want. just try not to soft brick or else you wont be able to pc odin if something goes wrong.. i always make sure the rom im flashing has a cwm safe ics recovery or i flash one seperate after i flash rom in case of a bootloop i can still get into a safe recovery to flash with

Sfhub has a rooted ff18 some where, but you can use mobile Odin to flash el26+cwm kernel tar and then flash a custom rom with root based on ff18 they will have the hotspot hack for free tether using the sprint hotspot. I hear blu kuban is really popular for touchwiz roms, I personally use my own version of aokp so I'm not real familiar with the touchwiz ics and which roms are the best other than what I've read, my choices for tw would be either blu kuban mijjahz goodness or one of venums roms

If its just the i9100 kernel you can grab an e4gt kernel and with mobile terminal do su then dd if=/path/to/kernel of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p5 to write the kernel.

I don't have pc odin now. I'd like to get it back, but it appears to be a little costly and inconvenient to correct the boot loader issue. I've been trying not to brick the phone, and hope that I can find the correct .tar and/or recovery kernel.
