[Q] Stay awake option (dev menu) disabled - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

Hi,
On my Nexus (i9250, stock ROM rooted), I used to select the "stay awake" option from the dev menu and it was working perfectly, but suddenly (as far as I know, not related with any update), the option has been disabled.
Could someone explain me why and how to reactivate it ?
Sorry, I can't post an image yet (too new on the forum)
Thanks
Diego

i don't know about that option, but to keep my screen on if i have pandora or anything and i don't want it to go to sleep after the set amount of time, i downloaded screen timeout toggle. works great, but it's just another app running in the background instead of letting us decide if we don't want our display to turn off after a certain amount of time.

Some questions from a recent iPhone switcher

Hello!
I just bought a HTC Desire (was using an iPhone 3G until a few days ago).
I haven't rooted (yet?), so I'm running stock 2.1. Didn't install any task manager.
I have a few questions I couldn't find answers to...hope you'll help me!
Maybe they are just differences between Android and IOS, everything is so different from the iPhone...
1. Why doesn't wifi turn off when I turn off the screen? The only option I found is to turn it off after 15 min (I don't see the point).
2. I turned off every autosync in every possible setting/app. (turned it off in all apps such as Newsrob, etc). When I'm out I continue to see the HSDPA icon with blinking arrows, as if something was transferring data. I only have the Astrid todo widget and battery snap. no weather, no mail, nothing else.
3. Do I have to switch off wifi and gps using the power widget? If so, why? On the iPhone if you don't use them they won't drain the battery...if I don't open Maps, why would I want to turn off GPS? Isn't it off by default?
4. Sometimes when I receive a text message and I read it, the 'Messages' icon displays a little '1' for a while, then disappears (don't know exactly when).
5. Since I turned off autosync, I have to open mail, press menu, hit refresh to check if I have new mail. I checked the 'Refresh on open' in the default mail app (not gmail). This works, but once the app is in the background and I switch to it, it won't count as a new 'open', so it won't check for new mail and I have to go through 2 additional keypresses. Frustrating, since mail is my most used app. This happens in both mail apps.
6. Is there a way to enable the clockwise landscape rotation?
7. Is there a way to enable a gesture to perform the 'back' action on the browser via the touchscreen? Maybe I need to get used to it, but for now I really don't like to hit the physical 'back' button.
8. The compass works randomly. Sometimes, using Maps, it's perfectly smooth and accurate. Then I close maps, open it again (i.e. switch to it, since it's in background) and it's a mess, doesn't work with the phone on a flat surface but moves if I hold it up vertically. Weird. Also, do I need gps activated to use it?
9. The auto-brightness is way too bright indoors, way too dim outdoors. I tried to trust it for a few days, but always end up going to the power widget and activate the lowest setting while indoor and the highest while outdoors. Any fixes for it?
Quite a long post, I'm sorry...
Thank you, this forum already helped me figure out a lot of stuff
I haven't had my desire long but here's my n00b point of view...
1. So your listening to streaming music the screen goes off your wifi goes off too personally i just leave wifi on unless i'm on holiday.
2. I have never turned off any auto sync options, If you want to be sure of not incurring extra charges, untick data roaming in mobile network settings.
3. My gps is set to off, If i use maps it switches on unless my desire is magical
4. I have had the 1 stick around before too, I have seen an answer to this before but i have forgotten where.
5. you could use the sync widget, or get a task killer to force close the mail app.
6.
7. Dolphin browser has gestures
8. Its been a while since i used the compass because i know where i am i believe a message popped up about enabling gps otherwise it would use the network to determine position or some such thing.
9.
6. enable rotation in settings/display
9. the auto brightness works off the light sensor so no, i have no problem with it tho works fine for me
1. In Advance Settings of my WiFi I found a sleep policy with 3 options:
a) After 15min. b) Never when plugged in. c) Never. I think that 15th minutes is fine, It wont drain so much power.
2. You could use a program like APNDroid to disable mobile internet, there is a widget for faster ON/OFF switch.
3. In Android programs can't change GPS status and you have to turn off/on manually. But for my personal option if the GPS is turned on it won't drain power if you not using it.
4. It bugs me too, It was the same on Windows Mobile.
5. I don't use mail programs on Desire and I'm sorry that I can't help you.
6. Not found my me - asking same question ?
7. Dolphin browser .
8. For me is working fine, but I don't lose myself often
9. I'm using manually brightness settings, but in sunny days AMOLED screen makes me crazy.
6. For this one you need a custom rom as the default rom only allows anti-clockwise rotation I believe
9. The Auto Brightness is rubbish, The power widget is your best and fastest option, Give Extended Controls a look if you dont want a full 1x4 widget bar

Max screen time out = 10 minutes

This is my only major niggle with this phone. I use it to track my cycling (speed & pace on screen) and it turns off halfway to work. This morning I used it in the car with Maps open and the traffic layer on (no need for Navigation, just wanted traffic info) and that again turned off after 10 minutes.
I know apps can set it so the screen stays on, but even Googles own Maps app doesn't do it.
Anyone else find this annoying?
Go to Settings, scroll to section 'SYSTEM'. Select 'Developer Options'. Tick 'Stay Awake' - screen should never turn off when charging. Probably won't help when you are cycling, but screen will stay on when on charge.

You could try some of the apps in the Android market such as Screen Timeout Widget or AnyScreenTimeout.
Not sure if these are compatible with Ice Cream Sandwich, but they'd be worth a shot. There's others there as well you could try out.
Here's a fix... Use the "always on" toggle in the app Extended Controls. I have just tried this and it works for me

Touch Key Light Duration (ICS)

I posted in another thread about a problem with ICS concerning "Touch Key Light Duration", but feel it needs it's own thread.
My problem is "Touch Key Light Duration". Seems to be a problem with the little bit I googled. I can set it the duration to "Always On, but it has a mind of it's own. Somethings will turn off the light; I have to go back into the settings to reset the light.
I've played with all of the power setting, power saving, display settings I can find, but cannot find a way to keep the lights on the way I want. I've done Factory Reset, I've changed the duration, changed power settings, etc to no avail.
Anybody else having this problem?
Anybody have a solution, or an app to fix this?
Same problem here.....I had to choose 6 seconds option in order to get it to work.
I have exact same thing as droid_ra.
I hope somebody will come up with a fix, it's really annoying.
Are you guys running Stock? If so ICS or GB?

Didn't have the problem with GB.
Now I'm running stock ICS. I even tried to do a wipe and reinstall with no success. May try it again.
Haven't tried rooting yet, although I've read in another thread that it may fix it.
I'm running stock ICS rooted, but the problem started right after I upgraded from GB to ICS.
So this problem is not ROOT dependent, but rather ICS's fault.
Like a someone else said, if you adjust it to 6 seconds delay, it will work properly.
However, I like to keep it at "Always On".

I too have the same problem. I'm running stock ICS that has been rooted. I did not have the problem when I was running stock GB that was rooted. Hmmm....
I was looking for confirmation and a fix when I created this thread.
Looks like a bug and Samsung/T-Mobile needs to fix this one.
Perhaps a dev can look into this?
yeah this is quite annoying. "always on" just simply doesn't work. 6-seconds is what I use now but I really wish I could go back to "always on" and have it work. Again, all since ICS update. Overall pretty please with the update but this and the mobile-life sync thing are annoying...
Same problem here, not rooted but happened going from GB to ICS, will have an Siii this week so hoping it's not an issue there.
Work Around
Hey guys I found a work around.
I used tasker and screen filter together to make the backlights light up whenever I turn the screen on.
I made a new tasker profile with the event Display On then put one screen filter task set to 96% and softkey lights off and another screen filter task right after it at 100% and softkey lights on. It takes a split second after turning the display on but 90% of the time it works every time.

My apologies in advance for my ignorance, but how does one go about creating a "tasker profile?"

You go into your tasker app then hit new. Then after you name it, it will pop up with "first context" and choose event--->display--->display on.
jgbenito7,
Thank you VERY much! I had no idea that there was such an app. It's been a while since I've used anything like tasker so I'm going to go slowly: read, read some more, then experiment. Thank you again,
Rich

No problem!
Did you get it to work? The only problem is that tasker is a paid app but its great for little workarounds like these.
I'm still reading how to use the tasker app. I think I understand the event section figured out but having some trouble figuring out the actions (e.g., "filter task set to 96% and softkey lights off....").
LifeHacker has two great articles: here http://lifehacker.com/5599116 and here http://lifehacker.com/5601133. I also downloaded the 14 day trial here: http://tasker.dinglisch.net/download.html . That way I can decide if I want to spend the money. Right now, it looks like I will.

I guess I could have been a little bit more specific...
There are two apps to download "Tasker" and "Screen Filter."
You open up Tasker then hit "new". After naming your profile hit okay then "First Context" window will appear. Hit "event". Then "Select Event Category" will appear. Hit "Display" then "Display On". The priority box will pop up but just hit "done". That is your event that triggers the actions. You should then be in "Task Edit". Click the "+" sign then "Plugin" then "Screen Filter". You should see "edit" across from "configuration". Click on edit then adjust the brightness to 96.1% (not 100% on the first one because it wont work right) then uncheck the "enable soft-key backlight" box. Hit save. Now add the second action by hitting the "+" sign again and do the same steps except this time have the brightness at 100% and the box checked for "enable soft-key backlight". The second action toggles the backlight therefore enabling it and also gets rid of the notification in the status bar. After you are finished hit "done" and then make sure to hit "apply". Test it out!
Got it! Thanks again. I was missing the "Screen Filter" app. I have the Task (event and action) up and running. It didn't work first try because the "Settings / Display / Touch key light duration" was set at "6 seconds." When I changed it to "always on" it started working. I'm looking forward to really getting into "Tasker!"
Had the same problem on every single rom!!
Posted in general, q&a and the rom threads abt this
A clean stock gb/ics doesnt have the problem i tested it for days
Seems like no dev cares abt the problem so i got used to the 6seconds option, i suggest that u do the same

Same problem here with rogers Official ICS on the Skyrocket, tried Google & saw lots of posts about the problem, but no real solutions. I don't think that it's carrier related... It's either Samsung or Google's problem. It's a pita!

Galaxy S3 i747m HOMESCREEN BUG..

I realized that the homescreen has some bugs especially if you disable the lock screen from settings..
It happened a few time in the past few days..
When I click the home button, the device is on, and I do not need to unlock it since the lockscreen is disabled.
Sometimes, after turning the phone screen on, all my homescreen widgets and the bottom shortcut bar(phone, contact, message, menu) would start to flashing like crazy...
The phone is still responsive, e.g. opening menus, change settings, top menu bar still slides down and up fine, everything is fine operationally except for the flashing widgets and bottom shortcuts..
I turned the screen off and back on, same flashing is present..
I have to power off the phone or restart the phone and it will return back to normal..
I believe this is definitely a software bug... Anyone familiar with this bug?
Are you running stock or are you rooted with a custom recovery?

UPDATE:
Also I found out exactly what is triggering this issue..
It has to do with the Developers Options under the Do Not Keep Activities and Background Process Limit..
I am experiencing this issue only when I tick Do Not Keep Activities, and set the Background Process Limit to No Background Process...
Also, today another issue showed up with the same 2 settings ticked Do Not Keep Activities, and set the Background Process Limit to No Background Process.
Basically what it happened is that when I turn on my phone, and open windows such as messages and settings, the phone would automatically attempt to close it down after 2-3 seconds... Also due this time, I received a message, my message tone changed back to the bird chirp default message tone rather than the Pure Bell message tone I setup previously.. When I manage to open the sound settings, I took a quick look and it was still set to Pure Bell, and after a second or so, the phone closed the entire settings window down...
I just press hole the power and click on Restart...
Now the phone reboots, and the phone is back to normal...
When I went back to sound settings, all my own settings are still there
BUT
When I went to the Developer Options, the setting for Do Not Keep Activities, and Background Process Limit where back to the default values.. (Do Not Keep Activities is not UNTICKED, and Background Process Limit is set to Standard Limit automatically by my phone after the reboot.)
I thought it was weird how the phone changed my settings after reboot, and the OS acts weird before I rebooted...
After using it through out today with the default settings for Do Not Keep Activities, and the Background Process Limit, my phone is acting fine.....
Pretty sure this is a SW bug, it is not a HW problem..
I think it did exactly what it should do with those developer options enabled. That was a very aggressive setting use used and does not represent normal operation of the software.

So this is a known issue?
Yes, pretty much Developer Options are pretty unstable...
The only setting I kept for are Mock Location (for those apps that use GPS without my permission) and the Animation options to 0.5x so the animation is faster.
Turning the Mock Location and Changing Animation Settings do not seem to affect the stability of the Stock ROM
Why on earth would anyone with a phone this powerful want to use those two options anyways!? I would say yes u have those problems with those options on... you have plenty of resources so don't do that to your phone and yes those are "developer options" and typically only temporary testing scenarios for "developers" just leave at default and be happy with much better working phone!

[Q] Stay on indefinitely

I bought a tabpro 12.2 to use in my office. It will be used for patients to register for events through our office website. The main problem I am running into is that the max amount of time before the tab shuts off is 30 minutes.
Problem 1: I need it to stay on indefinitely without going to black screen
Problem 2: Would like to know if you are able to use a customized screen saver. Such as a screen with a picture saying "Register Here" and then when they swipe it opens up to the page I want.
I tried searching the forum and online but can't find anything that is helpful. Sorry, I am a newbie at this so if I left out any information or if you need clarification please let me know.
I very much appreciate any help you can give!
For problem 1. Are you rooted? You could try Tasker and secure settings. That might do what you want.

There is an app called Wakey in the app store that will let you keep the screen on indefinitely. Install, Open, touch the light bulb. The screen stays on after you leave the app as long as you want. A notification in your status bar will remind you is in so you can go back and turn it off
You can tell the tablet not to sleep while charging by going to the developer options in settings. This menu is usually hidden by default so to enable it go to settings - about tablet and tapping on the build number 7 times. It should then have a message that developer options are enabled, you should see the developer options just above the about tablet in the list. There is an option in there to keep the tablet awake when charging
