First off, I take no credit for this, Credit goes to TEAM AOKP, Kbizzle , T.C.P., Sbrissen, Marcusant, and anyone else involved in the AOKP port to Epic 4G Touch. Vandam500 for quick easy guide for CM9. Bubby323 for CM7. (Anyone I missed, I am sorry, let me know I will put you up asap) Also thanks to SFHub for helping get the USCC variant rooted.
I, NOR ANYONE INVOLVED WITH THIS ROM ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR YOUR PHONE! FLASH AT YOUR OWN RISK, YOU MAY BRICK AND IT IS NOT MY FAULT. THROW IT IN THE TOLIET AND INSURANCE THAT THING. Read it all, be sure you know what you are doing before you get an expensive paper weight.
I did nothing to this rom but a few edits for USCC. Made changes for APN’s, build.prop. and eri.xml to show USCC.
Download USCC AOKP rom http://dl.dropbox.com/u/44439007/AO...m.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1514665.
Download CM7 from http://forums.acsyndicate.net/showthread.php?3372-ROM-UNOFFICIAL-Cyanogenmod-7-2-Alpha-6-(1-15-2012.
Put all this on your internal sd card. For simplicity sake I make a folder called roms and then /cm7 and /aokp inside and put the appropriate files there to avoid confusion.
Recommended install
From stock flash(odin) rooted FB14 kernel from here http://dl.dropbox.com/u/44439007/FB14_CWM_Sickin.tar
wipe data/factory reset, wipe cache, and wipe dalvik
install cm7 (no need to install gapps) REBOOT
after boot reboot into cwm
flash AOKP_build28_uscc.zip and then gapps for ics
wipe data/factory reset
reboot
enjoy
*NOTE* You will not have CWM after flashing AOKP. To get back I ODIN EB30 kernel, boot into CWM, and restored back up made earlier.
Also there are still options for 4G, I do not know much about editing them and will worry about them later, for now just ignore them.
Be sure to thank and show your appreciation to everyone involved.
Sickin,
If you can, make sure to post how to put CWM on the phone, I have all the files downloaded, just waiting on getting CWM.
Flash the EB30 clockwork kernel from here http://goo-inside.me/stock/epic4gtouch/kernel/acs-eb30-clockwork-epic-touch-4g-sep-20-4-00-pm.tar
that will give you cwm and you can go from there. Didn't realize the kernel flashed on SFHub's updated version didn't have cwm. Use odin to flash the kernel and go from there, that should take care of it.
EDIT: Sorry should have specified that you need to go back to either the EB30 or the EK02 kernel from SFHub's method, do not flash the stock kernel back or you lose CWM.
nice job but u don't really need cm7 or gapps just flash acs el29 kernel and use calks format all then install from and gapps, avoid all the extra steps.

There is nothing for the USCC edition other then the stock kernel so far, but we have found a few kernels that work with out problem so far. The FC05 kernel in AOKP seems to work fine.

No, nothing is changed except a few things for the us cellular version of the phone, everything about the rom is basically the same.
so, why would you put this in a Sprint e4gt forum?

Hey everyone, I have what I honestly feel is a really odd scenario. I have spend hours and hours troubleshooting forums and trying to get this all figured out.
My problem is this: I can't get CWM to flash cm9 to save my life. I even tried getting it to flash Hydra but that also didn't work. I keep getting the error: status 7
I realize quite a few people have gotten this. But using all of the fixes I can find hasn't helped.
I have CWM v. 5.0.2.7 on my phone.
My phone is a Samsung Galaxy S2 Epic 4G Touch. D710. EL29.
I've seen from the cm9 dev that cm9 should work on EL29, however he also says from what I understand that you have to run a EL26 version of CWM through Odin but from other things I've seen, you stick to the EL you have and don't vary or risk bricking your device.
So, do I need to flash another kernel? (I have specifically: 2.6.35.7-SPH-D710.EL29-CL852097)
I just need a kernel + ROM combo that will work. My phone is rooted and I cleared out everything with CWM before trying to flash. I'm stumped. and most of the help I can find is for i9000 international versions of the phone.
So if someone could help me find a version of cm9, CWM, kernel, etc downloads that will work, I'd appreciate it. Because from what I understand, I have the right ones but obviously something is off. Thanks.
What else is it saying besides status 7 error?

If its the assert build.prop error or something along those lines, in recovery , flash a stock rom like calks 3.0 rom (no need to boot into rom, just reboot back into recovery under advanced menu) then flash calks format all and then you will be able to flash cm9+gapps. At least I think so lol. Let me know if it works.
Edit: double post

You have to flash threw the el26 recovery.... I'll post the Odin I use and file to flash. As soon as I get home
It has a small paragraph of things. build.prop error is part of it. I've read that the status 7 error means it's not compatible with the device you're trying to run. But I also tried flashing HyDrA and that gave the same error.
I've tried to get the EL26 recovery on my device but Odin won't allow it. I think it's because I have EL29. I'm not sure.
I'm going to try flashing calks 3.0 ROM. Seems like it could work if I don't get an error when trying to flash it.

The error Odin gives me when trying to get CWM5 on the device is:
<OSM> Enter CS for MD5..
<OSM> Check MD5.. Do not unplug the cable..
<OSM> Please wait..
<OSM> MD5 hash value is invalid
<OSM> E4GT-EL29-directbootCWM.tar.md5 is invalid.
<OSM> End...
Go to the kernel repository stick in dev section. Find and download the el26 cwm kernel, its the first kernel listed. Odin that using PDA slot with only auto reboot checked in settings. From there boot into recovery and wipe data, cache and dalvik only. Then flash just rom of choice. If you still get errors, then I'm kind of lost.

slick_rick, you are the man!! I actually had tried to use odin to flash el26 cwm before. For whatever reason, Odin would not allow me to use a single one even though they all have pretty much the same el26_stockCWM.tar.md5. I went to the kernel repository and got that one and while I have no idea why that one worked and the others didn't, it did. Haha. I really appreciate all of your help!! You're a life saver! cm9 is up and running just fine.

I have the same exact problem, have EL29, flashed EL29+CWM+Rogue. Have not been able to flash CM10 or the AOSP 4.1.1 Alpha 5 rom.
Use the el26 kernel. If you are already rooted you can use mobile Odin to flash the .tar format of that kernel. You shouldn't use the rogue recovery. El26 with cwm5 is the kernel you want. I believe its in the original development section of this forum. Look for the post by chris41g. That is by far the best and safest kernel to flash anything from. Happy flashing

Try going back to gingerbread and flashing the EL26 kernal. Then flash the ICS rom you want through that recovery.
AOKP and CM9 have problems with data. every time you or system turn off screen say goodbye to data until 1.enable disable airplane mode or 2.reboot that's the main reason I stay away from these awesome roms until source arrives.
These roms are the best. IMO
1.odin back to stock el29 full reset oc
2.boot update profile and prl
3.copy the rom files to sd
4.turnitoff it off
4.enter download mode and flash el26+cmw for AOKP or el29+cwm direct boot for CM9
5.clear cache, factory data reset, clear dalvik on advance menu
6.go back and select install zip from sd card and choose the rom and flash it
7.flash gapps if apply
8.go back and select reboot system
9.enjoy these awesome roms.

I think I FINALLY got it to work. I started stock with rooted EL29 Odin-OC, flashed the "StockCWM-EL26.tar.m5d" in Odin, flashed the AOKP build 37 rom, flashed gapps, then flashed the FE16 kernel AND modem. When I rebooted the data was working.
Not that I am advocating this, and I am far from an expert, but I odin flash a stock rooted rom (SPH-D710.FC22_CL287574_ROOTED-oc-sfx) without going back to el29 just to have a nice clean stock rom to flash over with something else (like FIFO2). I just try to make sure I do everything in the same session so I don't get stuck in a stock recovery.
My order when flashing (non-Odin):
calkulin's format all
Modem (sometimes...if newer is available)
Rom
Kernel (with a custom recovery; sometimes the roms come with a stock recovery so if you reboot before installing a custom one, you'll have to either use odin to flash a custom recovery or mobile Odin)
any additional items that the rom didn't include (like gapps, etc.)
reboot
---------- Post added at 02:09 AM ---------- Previous post was at 01:58 AM ----------
Another thing to keep in mind is that AOKP was ported to the E4GT. That could cause issues depending on what you're coming from. Make sure to read all the instructions from the dev before flashing. If the worst happens, buy insurance on your phone and smash it...That's what I did with my evo when I bricked it.
So I've been playing around with CM9 Rom and I had no issues with it except with the poor call quality on the recipient side of the call was poor (sounded like low bit rate) or (underwater as some say)
At first I had used the following which gave me the poor call quality:
cm-9-20120620-NIGHTLY-hercules
gapps-ics-20120429-signed
TELUS_SGH-T989D_LE4_ICS_Radio_MOD
to resolve the issue i was having I did the following updates....
cm-9-20120620-NIGHTLY-hercules
gapps-ics-20120429-signed
Blaze_4G_LB7_ICS_Radio_MOD
so basically just got the newest nightly build and changed the radio to Blaze and so far its been working great on both sides of calling...
hope this works for others as it did for me
No. The rom itself fixed the audio issue, not radio

Basically mikeman77 disabled BLN to reduce its battery drain and he fixed audio issues in the June 20th build. BLN is the backlight notification you can get on the buttons.
I'm using the uvle1 radio, and my call quality is perfect! However, I did have the underwater issues when I first flashed the team chopsticks alpha rom. So, all I really did afterwards was flash the nighty build dated on 6/17 directly over the cm9 rom, wiped cache/dalvik, NO data, and now everything works! Still running the same build.

It's sort of a known issue for most if you use CWR to wipe cache, you can get stuck on boot screen. It borks the cache partition. Here is the link to TDJ's cache wipe script. Make sure you only use the cache wipe script after flashing the ROM. The super wipe script is used before you flash the ROM. The cache wipe script download is right below the super wipe. Just place on your sd card and flash. that should fix your issue if the MD5 matches.....Good luck and let us know.

Hi guys, sorry if this is stupid. I've flashed ROMs to 3 or 4 phones before this one and didn't have any issues with them, but this time around it doesn't seem so easy. My phone is a virgin mobile galaxy s2 (d710)
My phone has been rooted for a while and my stock ROM started randomly freezing up on me 4-5 times/day, so I finally decided to flash a ROM. The stickied post says to use odin mobile to flash to GB - EL26 Stock w/ CWM then to flash the ROM I want. Any ROM I tried flashing gave a status 7 error and aborted, EXCEPT for one ROM, and on that one I didn't even have working 3G? I believe this thread implied doing it any other way would be a hard brick.
I finally ended up using samsung's official upgrade tool in download mode to flash back to stock ROM, but it would be nice to get a custom on now that I've put time into it.
Can anyone point me in the direction I need to go?
Thanks
EDIT: I'm currently on the 4.1.2 stock ROM
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=50070702
I'm guessing you're trying to flash a KitKat ROM? Using Mobile Odin and EL26CWM will work when flashing 4.2.2 (and under) ROMs, but not KitKat. You'll need the last Blasphemy 6.6 kernel (just for the updated ClockworkMod), located in Original Development, for that.
In your case, you'll probably want to flash FJ12 or FL26 (if you can find it) modem zips, as you're on Virgin Mobile, and those are ICS Virgin Mobile modems, which you'll need to have working data/internet on Any AOSP ROM (JB modems won't work).
And this guide is assuming you're completely stock JB firmware, not rooted.

It looks like I'm on GB28 stock. I think agats caused a soft brick. I'm reflashing back to stock again now....I don't know what's going on with this phone.
Edit: Retried, got it to work this time. Thanks.
Is there a reason why you have to flash one recovery just to move onto another one? Would any recovery work installing any ROM? I'm a bit confused by all these different recoveries, since my last phone only needed one.

On this device, recovery comes bundled with the kernel. When you flash a ROM or kernel, the recovery that was on gets overwritten by the recovery that comes with the ROM/kernel you're flashing.
The reason everybody started using EL26CWM (gingerbread kernel) was due to a bug in the stock ICS firmware that was causing some people's devices to be permanently bricked when doing a factory reset.
Status 7 error when flashing is usually due to using a recovery that's too old.
So to answer your question... No, there is no "be-all, end-all" recovery for this device. Sorry [emoji20]
Glad you got it working though

Thanks for the help. Now that I'm running CM11, I don't have visual voicemail and it looks like I can't receive MMS.
Serious props to the people that use custom ROMs that aren't driven insane by bugs, I'm irritated by it already.
Know of any fix?
I don't know about visual voicemail... I'm flashed to Cricket and just use the built-in voicemail statusbar notification. Have you tried pushing the apk manually? I'm pretty sure I've seen Virgin Mobile fixes here in the d710 forum.
As far as MMS goes, have you tried messing with the APN's? I don't think MMS will work as-flashed, out-of-the-box for you without modifying them for Virgin.
If you're getting annoyed by bugs, have you given stock, rooted deodexed GB28 a try? When i get the TouchWiz itch, I run deodexed GB28, along with Agat's 1.3 kernel, TD's AIO mod, and Missing Link mod (both found in Themes and Apps of this forum).
I'm currently running Slimbean build 7 (4.2.2) as it's super lightweight, stable, and has good battery-life.

Do you know where I could find the voicemail apk?
Also, where can I mess with the APNs/what would work there?
The only reason I want a custom ROM at all is to be on KitKat. It honestly disgusts me a bit that google hasn't standardized versions....I don't get why every phone needs it's own ROM and never gets updated....
Thanks man.
Edit: I did find a MMS fix and visual voicemail all in one zip, but flashing it screwed the phone and I had to restore in recovery.
As far as editing APN's, I use Nova Prime launcher to create a shortcut on my homescreen to access them. Create shortcut to Activities/Settings/APNs and make your edits there.
Have you tried extracting the contents of the zip and manually applying those changes? Sorry but I wouldn't know anything else about configuring for Virgin. Maybe you could ask in that respective ROM thread, as I'm sure there are Virgin Mobile users there that have everything working.

Thanks for the ideas, I'm a bit slow sometimes when it comes to android/linux. I pulled the apk out of the zip, installed it, that's working fine. I just need to find a fix for my MMS. I can send but not receive.
Edit: I found a way to open the APN settings using voice dialer, but it's blank and choosing to add one, it does not save.

Just for clarification, if I want to flash a new ROM when I'm already on a custom, do I need to use odin mobile to flash back to that GB rom with CWM before I flash the recovery and new ROM? Or can I just wipe and flash new recovery from the one I have now?

If the new recovery you are talking about is safe to flash from...and the one you are currently using is safe to flash from...then you can just reboot recovery and wipe cache and dalvik, then flash new recovery and then reboot recovery. Now you will be on the new, safe, recovery. So do your wipes ( data, cache, dalvik cache and format system ) and flash the rom.
If you want to go the mobile odin way..in case the recovery you currently have cant flash the new recovery you need, in order to flash the rom of choice..which im assuming is kitkat. As it needs the most up to date recovery to flash properly.
Then i have a simple guide you can follow to flash a safe kernel/recovery, in which you can then flash the newer recovery for flashing the rom you have choosen.
Link to guide. Post 5 is what you need to read.
If this sounds complicated or confusing..please post a link to current rom you wish to install and i will read the op and point you down the correct path.
Thanks, I was looking to use either of these. I've had issues with ROMs so far because I'm on Virgin Mobile and lots of stuff is buggy. Not sure which of these will work best:

http://forum.xda-developers.com/epic-4g-touch/orig-development/rom-liquidsmooth-v3-1-t2803683
I'm not normally confused by rooting/flashing, but I don't understand the whole "safe recovery" thing.
I'm currently on this ROM: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2540250

I see. Im not too familiar with what works with virgin mobile.
But if you can flash a virgin modem and set your apns after a flash.. That will get your data working. I'm at work.. But let me refewsh my memory later about virgin mobile on this device and I'll hit ya back.
Fyi.. I think jdsingle made a virgin mobile rom a while back.

Thanks, I looked for jdsingle and only found posts for 3D Evo I believe; no activity since 2011?

It was made for JB but it's a start

Yeah, I tried that one, it continually crashed my launcher every 3 seconds, had to reflash the ROM. It did give me the voicemail apk I needed though! Really if I could just get flash instructions for going from one rom to another, I'd be set probably.
Have you tried applying the changes and setting permissions in the zip manually, like with Root Explorer?

No, I'm honestly not sure how to do that. Linux's file structure is confusing to me. Granted I'm also having wifi problems on this rom too, it disconnects all the time.

It honestly isn't too difficult at all. All I see in the zip is a new apns-conf.xml (permissions are rw-r-r), 2 build.prop edits, and the deleting of telephony.db located in /data/data/com.android.providers.telephony/databases
