So, how come roms DON'T have gapps integrated in them? - Sprint Samsung Galaxy S III

I don't mean to come off as lazy. I'm just asking a question for the sake of information.
It just never occurred to me that I have to flash gapps with every ROM but how come no dev just puts the gapps in with their ROM?

You don't need to with every rom, only aosp roms. I have no idea why gapps aren't included.

AOSP ROMs aren't allowed to include Gapps because Gapps are proprietary Google apps. They're not open source, and they're not part of AOSP. It is illegal to use Google's IP (Gapps) without permission. They get around the restriction by making you download and flash the Gapps separately. Gapps are included in Touchwiz ROMs because Touchwiz ROMs are just modifications of the manufacturer's ROM, which already has the rights to use Gapps.
Putting the ILLA in KILLA since 1985

That makes sense, thanks, I never knew that.

Thanks for clearing that up

CM9 NIGHTLY (UNOFFICIAL SEMI-KANG) FOR CDMA TORO
Hey! This is my first post here on XDA, though I've been a long time user of these very forums, since the OG Droid root.
This is also my first ROM, though the credit should really go to the Cyanogenmod team. This is a pull from the ICS branch of CM's git repository,
built on Ubuntu x64. The proprietary .so files were pulled from Team-Kang's repo, because theirs was the only files I could actually get running.
I'm running this as my main install, and so far there's been no problems at all.
THIS IS NOT STABLE.
This is the equivalent of a nightly from CM, though much less polished. It can be considered a pre-alpha nightly build.
I am not liable for anything this ROM may do to your phone.
I'm doing this because I always enjoyed Cyanogen's ROMs straight without any mods or tweaks. I knew exactly what was running on my
phone. This is a straight pull from git. I haven't included any extra pulls from git or gerrit, nor anything else. It's pure Cyan.
I will do nightly releases of this ROM. CM's source is constantly changing, and I'll try and keep up with that, at least until the
build servers are doing automated nightly compiles.
Download:
thewcubed.com/update-cm-9.0.0-RC0-GN-CDMA-KANG-signed.zip
To install:
Download the ROM to your phone.
Download a GApps zip to your phone. (I use kejar31's zip)
Make sure you have the latest version of CWM's recovery.
Boot to recovery.
Backup your current system and data partitions.
Wipe data, cache, and the dalvik-vm cache. (I always do it twice to be on the safe side.)
Flash the ROM.
Flash GApps zip.
Reboot.
(tentative) Hooray!
If the download is too slow, I'll try and upload this to a couple mirrors. I don't know if my server's going to be able to handle a request flood on a 10Mb/s upload line.
Glad your making a Rom, but...
1) its in the wrong forum and
2) you dont have a link because of your "probation" status of < 10 posts
Good luck with your work though!
Also there's (unofficial) builds by a CM developer in the development section already:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1397122
@kenyu73
I know that this isn't in the Dev section, but I can't switch it yet due to the 10 post limit. It should still be valid in the General section though.
The URL is still valid, simply copying and pasting it begins a download of the zip.
@got_milk
There may be unofficial builds, but those are for GSM devices. I apologize for not clarifying in the title that this is for CDMA/LTE versions of the Galaxy Nexus.

I love seeing new developers come here everyday
One small issue though, this is posted in the wrong section. This should be posted in the GSM Galaxy Nexus Android Development or CDMA Galaxy Nexus Android Development (depending whether its GSM or CDMA)

Did you ever ask the guys from cm team before you post the kang build?I dont think this allowed.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk
Getting your post count up and then posting in Development would have been the thing to do. This will get lost in General, and I can't see it being moved to Development or everyone and his mate would be using that loophole.
@afilopou The CyanogenMod source is released under the Apache 2.0 license. This ROM isn't built for commercial gain, I'm crediting the CM team as the writers of the code, nor am I attempting to alter the code and then copyright it. The concept of "open-source" is that one can do something like this, building and redistributing.
@Kalavere I'm not trying to get this moved to the Dev. If there's enough interest in it, I'll repost the thread to Dev when I'm able. The problem I had was that there wasn't a vanilla build of CM that I could find anywhere for the CDMA/LTE toro.

Nightlies and Frequently updated Roms?

Is there just not an easier more data friendly way of updating roms? Like instead of having to download 100+mb files every other day, would it take to much time to make patch zips 20-30mb? not that its a problem or anything, just that it would help with file hosting/bandwith etc.
p.s. mainly for very popular roms
no. because if someone wanted to try the ROM, they'd have to download the ROM base and then download the changes leading to 4+ flashable zips (ROM, Kernel, Gapps, Patch, etc)

[ROM] *UNOFFICIAL* ShinyROM [AOSP 4.4.2] KOT49H (No mods, completely stock!)

ORIGINAL CREDIT TO BALDWINGUY77 OVER ON ROOTZWIKI. CHECK OUT THE ORIGINALi: http://rootzwiki.com/topic/36706-ro...a-like-stock-android-442-kot49h/#entry1031982
I'm only port to maguro.
Is a port from original rom no have base maguro only changes for use GSM networks
This ROM is Android Kitkat 4.4.2, build KOT49H. The ROM is built directly from source, that is, the Android source code published by Google available for download to all of us developers. The reason I say the ROM is "OTA-like" is because I make VERY few modifications to it, aside from the things that it takes to get the ROM working. I'll go into detail about those things below, but basically I just want the ROM to make your phone feel stable and shiny and new as if it has just received a new OTA update. That being said, it's clear that the landscape of Nexus devices is changing as new ones are released. Therefore, the other primary goal of this ROM is to keep our Galaxy Nexus as close to the modern Nexus design as possible. This means that I will also add in features that will still be stock, but will also make our phones as close to a current Nexus as possible.
As for how I handle the forum side of things, I'm always open to comments, questions, suggestions, requests, etc. I know that most of those things will often be in the form of criticism, but it's okay, I think I can handle it That being said, I do also have a life and am a college student, so I may not get to come on here ALL the time. I will check back as frequently as possible, and I'm hoping that you guys will help each other out as much as possible! Keep it friendly! So now for the details...
Features
Stock Android 4.4.2, build KOT49H
Source (AOSP) built kernel (boot.img)
(De)Odexed
Easily rootable (see information below)
G-Apps (GMail, Play Store, etc.) included in build along with Nexus apps
Stock browser replaced with Google Chrome
Shiny restart options - access them by holding down the power button and then long pressing on "Power Off"
All the crazy Google proprietary app stuff has been taken care off
Updated frequently
Everything works!
So what do I mean when I say "Everything works!"?
I'm sure by now you all know that when someone says that, it usually ends up not being true. This ROM is not an exception to that rule, but I can say that I've tested most of the things that would be expected to work in stock Android, such as...
WiFi Tethering (no subscription check)
Bluetooth streaming
Google account sign-in and auto-restore of apps and settings
Google Wallet
Location Services (pretty fast GPS lock in my area also)
Believe it or not, December is still a month!
Photosphere
Android beam
Photo editing with the new filters
Email
Exchange support
Like I said, the normal stuff (data, voice, hardware acceleration, etc.)
More things that aren't important enough to mention here - check out the changelog for a more comprehensive list
Installation Instructions (VERY IMPORTANT - Note: I use recovery-clockwork-touch-6.0.4.3-maguro)

1. Download the latest version of the ROM from the download post. (Also download any other files you will need to install, such as Chainfire's Superuser Root ZIP, the radios installation ZIP, the bootloader installation ZIP, etc.)
2. Put the file(s) you downloaded in step 1 on your phone's internal storage (sdcard).
3. Turn off your phone.
4. Boot into the bootloader of the phone by holding down both volume buttons and the power button simultaneously until you feel a vibration and see a large arrow that says "Start".
5. Use the volume keys to change the arrow until it says "Recovery," then press the power button to boot into recovery.
6. Because of differences in recovery types, I will make the following steps rather generic.
7. Wipe cache.
8. Wipe dalvik cache.
9. If you want to be 100% sure there are no problems, wipe data. If you are coming from another ROM or Android version, wipe data. If you do not wipe data and something goes wrong, repeat this process but wipe data - this step is not necessary if you are simply upgrading.
10. Flash the ROM
OPTIONALS:
11. Root: If you are rooting, flash Chainfire's SuperSU ZIP file - this step is not necessary if you were rooted on the previous build and are simply upgrading.
12. Mod's: If you like any mod you can install zip now
13. Change kernel: U can change aosp stock kernel. Tiny Kernel, Fancy Kernel, Dirty V, Franco Kernel, Mpokang kernel.
14. Reboot your phone, and enjoy!

No GApps "Add-on" Zip
Some people don't like the way ShinyROM includes its own GApps. Flash this zip directly after the ROM and it will strip out most of the included GApps so that you may use the preferred GApps of your choosing. This will leave the core GApps (Store, Services, etc.) as well any others required for basic functionality (Keyboard, Camera, Launcher, Dialer, etc.) since there are none of the AOSP counterparts included.

[Q] Where do I download gapps?

There are so many sites that provide them but how do I know which one actually supplies legit ones. I only want play store, that's it nothing else.
What do you mean 'legit ones'?
Gapps are gapps. Go for banks gapps if you want something well known
#stayparanoid
Virtually every gapps package you find on the web will be fine. These are all 'legit' and generally interchangeable (gapps for PA and for CM/Omni/AOKP/every AOSP based ROM are the same).
You can download and flash CyanogenMod GApps. Just make sure to download package that matches your PA Android version (eg CM10=jb, CM11=kk 4.4, CM12=lp).

my roms

I decided to move my stuff here
These roms are for testing purposes. Some of them will eventually become officially maintained but I felt like testing them now. Why not not share. Which is why I'm not sharing in roms and development thread. For a few reasons du is not going official which is why I don't care what happens. I'm going to maintain a modded version and venture out from stock du and have some fun with it.
I don't mind helping but it's getting out of control. Every other pm is can I have ur trees can you make this rom can you help me compile. That's all fine and dandy but I'm not going to build a rom that I personally wouldn't use. Nor am I your personal building machine I do this for fun. Google, google, google, YouTube, YouTube, google, stack flow, Gerrit, GitHub. Words of a wise man. Use those and read, watch tutorials, and learn guys. Everybody has a life as do I. I'm not gonna say I don't drive some people nuts (coughs) nepo rood lol ur the best. Jay, Brian, razor u guys to. But I had some experience and will to learn that being said I'm gonna leave some links for tutorials on how to compile while the videos aren't for our device the setup is the same so u guys will have a idea on what to do. And I'm not saying I won't help I have no issues with that. But like I said I'm not going to build for u
Guys I do this for fun I don't get paid for it. Request will be ignored until my project is stable. I am not adding any features to ROMs that aren't mine, dirty unicorns I will soon start adding things I like. but on my own time and terms Directions for all my ROMs are pretty much the same. So I'm not sure why there are issues. My ROMs are always pretested by a few guys on my team before released. I use official gapps and data tool hasn't been updated by open gapps which is cause for error on first boot. Not my fault so if u use open gapps expect it. Try razorloves. The vendor/overlay folder should be deleted so it doesn't conflict with substratum and is only necessary if you are into themes especially dark overlays. So I'll share exactly how we flash so there is no issues.
Boot to recovery make sure u are slot A.
Wipe everything except internal storage.
Flash rom and twrp reboot to recovery.
Flash gapps and vendor.
Mount vendor.
Erase overlay recommended but not necessary if u don't use substratum.
Reboot and enjoy ur ice cream
There are some great tutorials for flashing mods on these forums so search there for further help.

Reboot to recovery and flash latest magisk..... Good to go
I am using my own version of twrp but version 3.2.0
Gapps

Vendor. Always the latest

I will not spoon-feed you don't ask me to compile ur favorite rom. I'm getting to the point im done with xda. so before u go on a tangent and cry to ur mother that I'm to fault for breaking ur device I wrote all the directions in plain English. Good luck I wouldn't post anything that hasn't been tested by me or anybody I work with. Thanks
