[Q] LTE Access on T-Mobile with AT&T S III - AT&T, Rogers, Bell, Telus Samsung Galaxy S III

I've been searching both the T-Mobile and AT&T S III forums but haven't found my specific question.
I have an unlocked AT&T S III that I'd like to move over to T-Mobile. While I was in their store today I was told that I couldn't access their new LTE network in my area until Samsung sent out an OTA update. I know all LTE networks aren't created equally but I'm accessing AT&T's just fine, averaging about 32Mbps down and 10Mbps up.
I can't find any information about a Samsung update that would let me access T-Mobile's LTE network. I did a few speed tests with their SIM card in the store and the best result was 3Mbps down and 1Mbps up.
Any thoughts on this supposed OTA update or what I'd need to do to access their LTE using my unlocked AT&T S III?
For what it's worth, I'm currently running CM 10.1 M2.

Well according to this http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_LTE_networks
Both At&t and Tmobile use 1700/2100 AWS. So once Tmobile releases the new Galaxy S3 someone can extract the radio from it's firmware. You could then flash the radio on your device. Alternatively you could simply enter the APN settings from Tmobile's Galaxy Note II which already (due to recent firmware update) supports Tmobile's lte network.
You can use this site to check on the progress of Tmobile's lte deployment.http://sensorly.com/map/4G/US/USA/T-Mobile/lte_310260

The APN change is a solution I haven't heard about. I'll probably head back to the store tomorrow to test this theory. I'll give feedback regardless of how it goes.

Please do I had the exact same question and I would appreciate it. Thank you.

I wasn't able to test this theory today because I couldn't find reliable T-Mobile LTE settings. I also read that changing or adding new APN settings can have adverse effects like Google Now not working. This makes me a little hesitant to try it even if I can find the right config.

Ah ok, you should be able to delete apn settings you add after testing. I don't have the phone in my possession or else I would test it myself. The settings I believe are changing the apn to fast.t-mobile.com while keeping everything else the same.

ROM difference between i927 & i927R and 4G symbol

Hi,
Being in Australia the Captivate Glide is not available locally so ordered it online via a parallel importer.
I was supposed to receive the AT&T version but due to no stock I received the Rogers i927R version.
I cannot root the device as my work place prevents it since I need to use it for work related messaging.
1. Is there a list of differences between the AT&T and Rogers ROM's ?
2. I'm on Optus which uses 900/2100MHz, so the phone will connect on 2100.
Using an App called Network Signal Info I can see data connection switching when I'm moving around as normal, but the data symbol in the notification bar doesn't match when on 3G as follows:
NetInfo | Speed | Notif-Bar-Symbol
GPRS | 55kbit | G
UMTS (3G) | 384kbit | 4G <-- doesnt say 3G
HSDPA | 7.2Mbit | 4G
This a bug or ROM incompatibility ?
Thanks.
The only differences I know of is that the Rogers ROM is carrier-iq free and the tethering option is unlocked.
In my AT&T version, I can't find any way to manually toggle between 2G and 3G networks. However the network info apps/widget show it's automatically switching between EDGE, HSDPA and HSPA.

It would be handy to sometimes by able to force 2G to save battery.
Anyway, can the Rogers ROM be flashed onto the AT&T Glide and still work ?

Good point.
Sounds like I should stick with the Rogers one they sent me rather than swap it for an AT&T version since the Rogers one will be most compatible without having to 'root'.
Carriers in Australia seem to allow tethering by default as long as you have a working App for it.
Thanks.
Which parallel importer did you use, do they have an online storefront?
Hope the Rogers version pricing comes down as fast the AT&T one. That's I went for At&T, down the line I'll end up flashing it with an open ROM. Mostly because of OpenVPN support.

Indeed that's why I asked, since I don't use any data packages.
I checked my mom's S II, appears to be an AT&T carrier limitation. It won't even scan for other networks. I set her S II to 2G.
Earlier I wasn't concerned with the AT&T ROM, but this one is annoying, I could save some serious battery time by switching to 2G.

They've been very helpful and responsive, trying to get stock as quickly as possible.
When they couldnt get the AT&T Captivate Glide they sent me the Rogers Galaxy S Glide.
Seems that was the better way to go.
AT&T locks down their network and band select while Rogers does not. AT&T uses an "H+" on the HSDPA network to show status while Rogers uses a "4G".
Learned by flashing Rogers ROM onto an ATT cglide. Changed the model to 927R as well. Went back to ATT when I noticed the loss of the ATT wifi options.

So even after rooting the phone, there's no way to manually change bands while on the AT&T ROM?

I'm using the Rogers version in Australia.
I have all the normal WiFi options and have used it at home and on public ones with no issues.
I think, just guessing, that Tynar is talking about the customized WiFi options on the AT&T ROM I have read about which gives you access to their own WiFi network.

Yep, I since had a look at the User Guides, of which there is a different one for each version Rogers and AT&T. The ROM's have been customized to show different symbols for mobile connectivity.

Ya... Thats at&t limitation, I guess... But atleast in my sister's AT&T Thrill phone (running Froyo + rooted with SuperOneClick) the "NETWORK" app (LINK) from AM/PlayStore works and helps in selecting 2G only or 3G only whenever needed...
But even that app is NOT working on my rooted CapGlide... May be because this phone has only rooted-ROM and not rooted-Kernal (as told by rooting guide in cap.glide development section)... Experienced members please help... I badly need 2G only for battery backup and 3G only for good speed as 3G coverage in my place is not great...
Thanks...

With AT&T Rom, you don't have that option.
You can flash Rogers Room (Untouched or Custom Rom) where you have the option of manually choosing network and choosing 2G/3G
Switching to 2G would really save on battery life.
So the notable differences are...
1. The AT&T ROM doesn't allow band switching or manual carrier search and selection. While the Rogers ROM does not have this restriction?
2. AT&T allows WiFi tethering, while Rogers doesn't?
3. Both versions come with Mail for Exchange apps?
4. Skype, G+ Hangouts, Google Talk, Voice and video works on both?
Please add/correct any other big differences. I'll make a table and put it up on Wikipedia once we have the notable differences, that could cause issues with international use.

SIM Unlock LG G Pad 8.3 VK810 Verizon to AT&T

I have been searching and cant seem to find anything... :/
I am trying to SIM Unlock my LG G Pad 8.3 Model VK810 that is Verizon and should come factory unlock I believe. I need this to be used on AT&T LTE which I have a sim card for and a tablet plan on the shared data plan.
It is on 4.2.2 baseband is m9615a-cefwtazm
I tried adding some ATT APN settings I found, but that did not help me. I think I need to Change it to GSM From CDMA somehow? I am not really sure. I can update and root if needed or whatever I need to do. I also have a samsung z3x box, but dont think it will work on the LG.
Any help would really help me out! Thank you in advance.

As it seems you are comfortable messing with your APN settings that should be all you will need to do. The device is locked to specific wireless frequencies but luckily for you at &t uses the same LTE frequencies. You will need to have root access in order to write your APN settings though, check the forums for information on that. Finally make sure that the sim you have is compatible with your tablet data plan, and your APN settings should be as follows for mobile data only.
APN: BROADBAND
MCC: 310
MNC: 410

I do not, I am sure you will find something if you look around. The V500 and V510 methods are not compatible. There is a method for yours though along with a custom recovery in the works. You may even have a custom rom in the near future.
P.S. this topic belongs in Q/A and not development.

Why would it belong in Q/A? If I am having to root and unlock it or do custom recovery? Isn't that with development?
Sorry if I have posted in the wrong place.
Here is the link I found for Rooting: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2703825
From researching it looks like it will work with the VK810.
This was also newly released: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2726707
But there are no custom roms that I have found yet.
So, I should Root this and then change the APN settings to what you told me and my ATT SIM would work?
Thank you!

I haven't read much about i0root but it looks like it will work. Now the next part is not certain weather or not it will work, but I have seen tablets able to run on other networks that are unlocked. As long as Verizon did not implement any extra protection you should be able to use an at&t sim that is enabled for tablet data.
Once you are rooted go pick up es file explorer and navigate to /system/etc/apns-conf.xml . Make sure that before you change anything that you make a copy and name it something else so you can find it again if you have to go back. Open the file using the text editor. You can get rid of the other apns and just put your new one in there and give it a reboot. It should kick right on after you reboot. Good luck!

I have an LG G PAD 8.3 VK810 Verizon that I am trying to root in order to SIM unlock from Verizon to ATT.
I have installed the Drivers packages here and it finds the drivers in USB Modes: Charge tablet and media sync fine, but when I go to Internet Connection mode and choose ethernet it can not find the following drivers: CDC ECM, CDC SERIAL, AND 3 THAT SAY LGE ANDROID PHONE.
Any ideas on how to get these drivers installed to try the next step? I tried to go ahead and run the iroot program but it can not find the device.
Thank you for the help.
I have installed a T-Mobile SIM card in my LG GPad 8.3 LTE so I could get the free gig of data they offer existing customers. It worked without rooting. All I did was add a new APN with the proper T-Mobile settings and I was able to surf. Did it right there at the T-Mobile store with the rep to verify it would work before I added the data line to my account.

Thx for the tip. The tablet is set to LTE mode and since T-Mobile LTE has the same band with Verizon LTE. It definitely works on T-Mobile.
For AT&T, no luck even if rooted. I used Radio Switcher app to go to the Tablet Info in Testing Mode. But it displays error message "This application does not work on this device".

Easy...
Vk810 supports lte bands 4(aws) and 13 (700mhz block c), bands that Verizon uses
T-Mobile uses band 4 for lte mainly, will use band 2 (1900) and 12 (700 MHz block a) in the future as well. Vk810 will work on T-Mobile wherever tmobile has LTE right now (with band 4)
Att uses band 4, 2 (1900), 17(700mhz block b) and 30(2300mhz). Vk810 will only work on att if at uses band 4. If att only used band 2 in your area, your att phone (which supports band 2) will show LTE, but vk810 won't work
I don't know if there is a map showing which bands att uses in your area. There is a spectrum map showing who owns which band in which region, but no guarantee that att has active cell sites

believe that circle = battery indicator, not network indicator.... full circle = 100% battery, otherwise not 100% battery

LTE Connection problems

For those of you have LTE connection issues when in the past LTE worked fine I want to share what I did and it worked. I am not in a Spark area and after getting the update from Sprint I lost LTE connection at work. I previously had LTE a 100% of the time at work. I noticed that a lot of folks on the Sprint forums were having the very same issue. After researching with Sprint to solve my problem (They were no help at all), and the combination of things I read here on xda (I can't find the forum So I take not credit for this) I want to share the solution that worked for me.
1. Call Sprint and obtain your MSL code
2. In the phone dialer enter ##3282#
3. press LTE and enter edit, Enter MSL code
4. Click on LTE, then bands 26 and 41 and disable both of them
5. Phone should reboot and LTE should work as it did before
If someone would be so kind if I can't find the threads on here I would like to link them and give credit were it is due.
I just wanted to share what worked for me.

Just a note if you get a profile or prl update that you did not initiate you will have to turn off bands 26 and 41 again following the steps above.
Disabling bands 26 (800mhz) and 41 (2500mhz) seems counterproductive to the gains that Sprint Spark is supposed to bring. I'm guessing it's probably region specific to those having LTE issues where disabling these bands "fixes" whatever issues you're having (maybe Spark is not fully deployed, etc). I'm not having these LTE issues by the way, and LTE coverage here in NYC has improved to the point that i even get LTE in some underground subway stations.

That's the exact problem, the roll out is far from nation wide. So if you are in a non spark area, the phone constantly seems to search for it. My battery life significantly decreased on ZVC. Once I shut off those bands, my LTE was much more stable and battery life improved greatly.

no LTE on at&t - unlocked m919

I've seen several discussions about this but didn't seem to find a working solution. I'm currently using GNF1 V3 NB4, I tried using the apn settings for at&t and also called them to make sure they have the correct imei number. Also, for some reason under the "Network mode" I don't have an LTE option, I only have WCDMA/GSM, GSM ONLY AND WCDMA ONLY. I am able to get 4G but no LTE. Is there any solution or any other way to solve this problem?

Change ro.product.name= in the build.prop to say jfltetmo
will it also change the speed or just add an "LTE" symbol?
Give you the LTE option in network modes and change the icon. Speeds? Probably since youll have LTE back

ok, i have the LTE option in "network modes" now, however the speed is more or less the same and I don't have LTE bar, not sure whether it's because of my current location or what.. is there anything else I could edit to try to make it work?
If I change the ro.product.model , name and device to at&t values would I get the LTE speeds just like an at&t s4?

When I bought this phone from T-Mobile I was still on an AT&T plan. Before I jumped ship over to Net10 Wireless I used AT&T's LTE all over Pensacola. That was on a sim-unlocked, unrooted, otherwise 100% stock M919. Did you double-check your APN's? Perhaps you're just not in an area where you can pick up LTE?
Yes I use the correct apns the ones that at&t gave me, but im gonna try to go back to stock then change the apns to at&t and maybe that will work.. but even if it will, I don't know if I could keep using GNF1 or would I have to use a different rom, anybody else have or had issues with getting LTE on at&t while using custom roms and knows roms that work? (Preferably tw)
See your network type in settings > about phone > status. Try to get LTE with your AT&T SIM on another phone then install it back to your M919.

at&t 4G LTE Support

Hi,
I have an unlocked version of Fire Phone and have flashed the almost latest version of the Cyanogenmod ROM. I am using at&t wireless service but it seems that I just cannot use LTE. Based on other information I think the phone supports all the bands at&t is using. The network the phone is using is HSPA. I tried changing settings in the phone but it did not help. I searched carefully using related keywords but have not found anybody talking about this, and I wonder whether this is something too simple to ask or nobody else has ever encountered this problem. I want to know if there is something I can do to use LTE.
Thanks.

I have seen some issues about CM based ROM's and ATT LTE. Did you have a full LTE signal and good data speeds on the stock ROM before you flashed the CyanogenMod ROM?

Thank you for your reply. Unfortunately, I had already flashed CM before I switched to att so I do not have information about that. And currently I am not quite willing to flash the phone back to the native fireOS just for this because HSPA still gives good data speed...

Have you checked your APN settings and verified that it is setup correctly to use ATT LTE? Also, was this phone ever used on ATT before with the sim card you put in it? If not, then what will have to happen is this, I think: I found this excerpt which I believe is what will have to happen.
You WILL NOT get AT&T LTE on you phone unless your account is first provisioned with an AT&T LTE Phone. There is NO WAY around this. You must buy/borrow an AT&T phone that has LTE capability, put your SIM in that phone, and let the system provision your account for LTE automatically. This is NOT something that customer service, or a store clerk, can do for you. Once your account is provisioned for LTE (you will know because the LTE indicator will show up on the phone), you can then put the SIM card into your Fire Phone. At that point, the device will automatically select the "phone" APN, and you will get LTE (identified by the "4G" indicator).
Hope this helps
