Everytime I reboot my S3 it has a notification in the status bar 'preparing network'. It hasn't affected internet or texts or anything but it will not go away unless I long press the app in my notification drawer and force stop it. Anyway to make it stop period? I know it has to do that periodically but its never been frozen on the screen before! Any help is greatly appreciated. BTW, I'm on stock mb1 rooted with stock kernel.

I'd backup, then wipe everything. Don't restore any data just setup your phone again and see how it goes from there.
Might be some funky data.

Well I've already backed up so I guess I'll try factory restoring.

I also am getting this but not after phone reset (that i know of...not really resetting to much)
Mine is happening after phone is in standby/sleep mode for a few mins then i press power to take out of sleep.
I can see that message "preparing network) and during this time my "groove ip" app is not connected but it looks like my wifi is still.
Im not connected to cell service as i dont have any....it does show the cell signal bars but im connected over wifi.
I also have power saving mode disabled.
I do notice my whole noticicafion bar goes blank which is actually all black and when preparing network notification shows i can then see all my regular notifications up there....
Ok I fixed it, turns out when I changed my build.prop to 'Galaxy Nexus' and 'Google' instead of 'Samsung' it borked it. I changed the build.prop back and all is fine again. Weird to say the least :/

It happens to me sometimes and I'm full stock brand new. MB1
Happen at:
Boot (startup)
Checking for software update.
Speed Test Dot Net app.
When it changes from LTE to 3G coverage.
BTW it shows only for a split second. Never hangs or something like that.

It's always done it, just never had a notification before. It's the profile updating during network connection. It *should* do it anytime the network is enabled or switches between bands. In older builds you could see it if you went into /settings/about phone/status and toggled airplane mode on and off, under mobile network status it would say connected, then disconnected, then preparing, then connected. It's nothing to worry about it's just like any electronic device connecting to the Internet it takes a few seconds and there's typically a loading dialog while it connects.

OK, I have been dealing with this since I bought my GSII and cannot find any information about it.
Firstly I want to say that I am completely stock and unrooted.
My phone does not like to keep a stable data connection. About 50% of the time, when I try to do anything that requires a data connection (facebook, browser, gmail, etc.) the 2 arrows under the 2g/3g/4g icon will stick being grey and my phone just sits there "loading". I tried a factory reset, didn't install any apps, and also got a new sim card and the issue remains. It happens everywhere so it is not just a bad network connection.
I decided to post the question here because yesterday I was playing with my brother's GSII, and his did the same thing.. So it made me think that maybe it wasn't just me. Has anyone else experienced this? Or does anyone know what might be the cause?
Edit: I set my phone to use 2g only, and the problem vanished.. So it doesn't like to connect to 3g/4g.

Try going to your mobile network connection settings, choose access point names, hit your menu button and click "restore defaults".. It may fix it, I had data issues and it did the job. Hope it works for you!

Do what the gut above me said. Also call Tmobile and tell them, they will refresh your data connection on their end. That will clear up three problems your having.
But if it's also happening to your brothers phone, it's a network error. Call Tmobile.

I restored the apn settings and had Tmobile refresh my data connection, and it still happens. I noticed today that it's not just data, I'm also unable to call or text when it happens.. Tmobile just said everything tested normal so there is nothing they can do.. And I really don't think it's the phone so I don't want to exchange for a refurbished unless I have to.

Its happened to me before. For about a week, the data connection just dropped. It would come back for a bit and later vanish. I called t-mobile and they guided me through routine steps (i.e. taking the battery out, rebooting, resetting) but nothing seemed to work. They really couldn't figure it out and later told me to replace the SIM. I can't remember if they shipped me one or had to go to the store but either way that relieved the problem. This was on an HTC HD2.
That might not be the case with you though. At one point in time all the phones under my name lost data connectivity just as you explain. This really had no solution but to wait it out.

you mentioned your brother's is doing the same thing, its probably not the phone, but rather the cell tower your connected to is fuggin up. Try going 5 miles from where you currently are and see if its still happening.

Just in case it's not a cell tower or network problem . . . My SGS2, purchased in October, had the same symptoms as the OP. After trying everything the OP did, and more, I came to the conclusion that the firmware on the phone was corrupt. I used Odin to flash the factory stock ROM & Kernel images (2.3.5 at the time). There was a definite improvement in the faltering/hesitant/fail connectivity problem at that point, but it was still very subpar. So I then also flashed, again using Odin, the baseband ("modem") image - I did it twice for good measure. The problem was finally immediately solved at that point and I had very prompt loading of webpages, etc. Still working fine months later (and even better with a custom ROM). See the thread entitled "[Q]Is there a "true" factory restore for T-Mobile Galaxy S II?" for help about the seemingly same symptoms/problem you (and your brother) are experiencing. If your underlying problem is in fact the same as mine (and the poster of the thread I cited) then it's apparently either a bad factory flash or a post-factory corruption occurrence that is causing your problem . . . the coincidence of your brother also having the same problem aside. Good luck!

I just flashed cm9 and i lost the data on my phone. Even the wifi won't work. Both the wifi and data icons are grey. And don't seem to turn blue and connect.
So any help will be appreciated thanks.

Can you make calls or is your radio out too? IMEI still intact? I would try wiping everything and reflashing a different rom and see if the one you tried just didnt install correctly.
I am having the same issue as well (actually I was going to make the same thread) except it is only wifi that isnt working for me. Every time I connect to a wifi network the signal turns grey not letting me use the internet. But when I disconnect from it my cell strength gets full and turns blue and I can use 3G no problem.
Any ideas people? I am currently on stock 4.0.4 rooted.
Long press the WiFi toggle in settings. When you release your finger it should take you to a screen where you can see the available networks pick one and connect. Hope that helps our even makes sense

Grey bars does not mean no data. Grey bars mean no connection to Google servers.

Well for the both of you I would flash the radios again. Both sets. And if that doesn't work. I would have the phone on when it gives me gray bars make sure 4g is off and put it in airplane mode let it sit for about 20 seconds and then turn airplane off and see if you get blue.

I do remember if you did a app and system restore from TiBU, instead of just the app+data restore, it screws things up and gives you grey bars.
I am assuming you did not do that, but that has been my only experience with it.
Actually i did use tibu and when the restore is finish it asks me for a reboot and that is when it ****s up. Should i flash fresh and restore from google?

Grey bars is NOT a result of no data, and blue bars is NOT a result of having data. You can have grey bars and have data.
Just for future reference.
"Long is the way, and hard, that out of hell leads up to light."
When I try to update my data profile (because of VERY slow 3G speeds on my E4GT converted to Boost) I get "The profile update could not be completed. Error: Unknown error". Sometimes, I also get the Error 67, that my Sprint data username and password are incorrect. The E4GT is on a stock GB ROM.
The 3G symbol and arrows take several seconds to appear after I take the phone out of airplane mode, sometimes requiring a restart, and even then, once they appear, they sometimes stay greyed out even though apps are asking for data. When the arrows do go green and orange to indicate active data transfer, it's VERY slow, almost 1x like.
Also, sometimes, far far more often than my Galaxy S1, the signal bars will drop from very good signal (full or almost full) to half or to almost none, then come back up.
'
In testing my 3G connection speed with the Ookla Speedtest.net app right now, my first test got a 962ms ping, a download of 121kbps, and an upload of 152kbps. Two further tests resulted on "network communication issues) with the 3G icon's arrows being greyed out. It was on the Witchita, KS server. I could not get it on the San Francisco server that my Galaxy S1 tested on, as the listbox to choose the server would not scroll to server more than about 1,000 KM away.
For reference, in the same spot, my Sprint/Samsung Galaxy S1 (on Boost, with the same account that's now on the E4GT - Neither is on the network at the same time as the other) scores thus: 126ms ping, a download of 470kbps, and an upload of 797kbps. It was on a local (to me, as in, in my city) server, San Francisco.
Help!
Not saying I know anything about being on Boost but found a couple of XDA threads that talk about Profile/Prl updating on Boost and tweaks for speeds on 3g/4g and wifi.
I'm sure there's a better/quicker answer from the Boost folks here but this might help get you started if you haven't seen them.
Also, saw some outside threads on the same issue you had via Google.
If you've seen these, sorry, just was looking into it.
This post talks about 3g stops working but the method, the poster believes, reset the radio: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=30389012&postcount=3
Tweaks, general. May help? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1506199

Thanks. I saw the first thread you linked (In fact, that's how I got my OG Epic onto Boost) and did use it (and others) to get my S2 onto Boost. But where in there do you see talk of resetting the radio?
As far as the second thread, I haven't done those tweaks on my OG S1, and it gets MUCH faster data than this S2, so it must be something else.

I fixed the problem. Here's what I did, just in case someone else's phone experiences the same symptoms.
-from the dialer, type ##3282# ...
-click EDIT and type your MSL code
-select EVDO from the menu
-I waited about 3 seconds while the signal bars and the 3G icons disappeared ... then I waited another couple of seconds for the icons to re-appear
-then I pressed the back button until I was back in the Home screen
NOTE: I didn't change any settings during this procedure, the 3G restored itself just by entering and exiting this menu
It looks like the radio resets during this procedure and everything restores back to normal. It's interesting that updating the Profile and the PRL did not help, even though the radio resets itself after performing said updates.

I tried the radio reset procedure you quoted, but it had no effect. Here's a video (4m, 14s) showing me trying the reset procedure and a speed test afterward, as well as my profile update difficulties.

I have not set a PRL. The only thing I tweaked was to remove the Sprint proxy in ##3282, though this did not help my speeds. When I bought the phone it had a bad ESN, so I never activated it on Sprint, only on Boost.

Only thing i would think to try is flashing a one click, since I've seen others on boost that says it doesn't change keys etc, and seeing of that helps.

I tried a one click back to EL29 (Gingerbread) last night since I read that I must be on a GB ROM to install CWM and proceed from there. No change in speeds, still have the error 67 registration failure.
Further, I rolled my OG Epic 4G back to stock so that I could get at the dialer codes and get it recognized in QPST, read its settings and saved them to a file, then opened up my E4GT in a window beside it. I then duped all the M.IP and PPP Config settings. I also checked the NAM settings to make sure they agreed.
No luck, I'm still having the same issues, while my OG Epic 4G is not.
After rebooting my galaxy s3, for some weird reason it messed up my signal service. Now everytime I reboot my phone or even turn it on, the signal bars would stay grey (usually turn blue when working) and go from full to none. If i'm lucky, i would get signal for a couple seconds and then i would all of a sudden lose all of it again. Please help me.
Maybe try to flash a different modem with the modern flasher found in the android dev section?

Do you have IMEI intact?
Install the app called "Network Signal Speed Booster" to increase the signal strength on your android mobile.
I have no signal on my galaxy nexus. It just started doing this today, haven't had a problem for 3 months or so. It just started today, and once in a while there is a little R above where the signal bars would normally be. How do you fix this?
The R is for roaming and just go to settings then mobile settings then click on system select and click on home only and also click on network mode and just click on CDMA/EdVo auto and that should help it to not roam and stay on sprints signal hope that helps ..let me know if u need any other help and also make sure u updated to latest PRL
Dude mine just started doing this yesterday look at top right of screen shot no signal !!
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda app-developers app
Mine did the same thing too -- lost signal - Google GSM play store phone that was less than two weeks old.
After few reboots trying to diagnose the issue, the IMEI changed to UNKNOWN in the "about phone" -> status
/factory was intact and undamaged - a backup of /factory - showed that none of the files had changed. The radio appears to have failed..
Called Sammy and got replacement cross-shipped - and sent the broken one back..
Got a new Sim card works fine
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda app-developers app
Mines done this several times and it always took about two reboots to get a signal again. It said I needed to insert a valid sim card...
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda app-developers app
Even without a a sim I used to get bars and "Emergency calls only" - After it flacked out, I would no longer get any bars.. when I tried to search for networks it would error out immediately. I tried three different sims, none of them were recognized..
Once in a while, my phone will loose data connection. The 'data icon' in the status bar, turn from blue to grey and the only way to get data working again, is to reboot the phone.
Had it happen a couple times now. Airplane mode toggle on/off works to fix it.
Mine losses connection when I leave a WiFi network. Also here and there it looses signal so bad I have to go into airplane mode and back to land mode.

Hmm last time airplane mode didn't work for me. Will try again next time. I also think it happens when I leave wifi.
take out your battery and then restart your phone. if that does not work. check in your network settings and make sure you are on the correct network for your carrier. if that still does not work, go to your local store and see if they can warranty you out a phone or check your settings

I understand that but there has to be fix right? As soon as i reboot the phone it works but it seems like whenever it changes cell towers signals it locks up again. Crazy thing is all the signal bars on my phone are full green, but have no data until i reboot.
