Hello everybody.
This retarded phone..deleted all of my files that were in storage. That includes, photos, music. ebooks etc..i have no idea why it would do that ! it is not the first time this happens. the phone was connected to my computer, then i transferred some files to it, and after i disconnected i saw that my storage was empty sans the files i just transferred.
does anyone have an ideas why did it happen or how to prevent a situation like this in the future ?!
The PC term is "phones with disabilities".
Reboot your phone and I bet it is working properly again. Something about mounting computer storage search blah rabble.

Thanks for replying, but i don't think you understood me. the phone is working normally, and the storage is mounted properly and recognised by the computer. the problem is that all of my data that was on the device got deleted by itself, by the phone ! as absurd as this sounds..

I got that you were implying that, but I didn't think you seriously thought that was the case. Plus I've experienced the same thing when unmounting from the comp, a reboot fixes it. I mean if your storage isn't holding data you must have a hardware issue right? Or you keep your phone next to a powerful magnet or something. Your options are limited in that case. Warranty it or buy a new device. The only other thing I can think of is you recently updated to JB and are confused by the /0/ partition.

Well, a reboot didn't work for me..the data is still deleted. you mentioned unmounting from the computer..in MTP mode there is no actual unmounting right ?! its just plug and play..
couldn't the problem be software wise ? this has happened both in android 4.1 and 4.2..

I hope not! There shouldn't be any software that wipes your sdcard w/o you wanting it to. I mean, I guess for you I would hope that's the case since you wont be out the hardware, but personally I am unaware of any software that functions like that. Can you replicate it? If you download a song or a picture or something right now and plug your phone up to the comp, will everything be wiped again?

No..it is totally random.
the only thing that i could possibly think about is that i sent an app to be installed from the Play Store while the phone was connected to the PC..maybe that caused some kind of interference ?!
I wish it was that easy sending the phone for repairs. it is still under warranty but i bought it abroad, which means i would be left without a phone for a month or two and will have to deal with customs.
Unfortunately, nobody but you seem to be able to help me. i appreciate you trying to help, thank you.

Guys.. I have a problem >.<
I was copying my music files across in MTP mode and suddenly it stop functioning. I cant copy anything on to my GN anymore. I try switching to PTP mode but same problem.
I can view the file on GN fine but I cant copy anything now. Any help please >.<
Note: I just finished copied 2 albums and that is it so my storage is not full.
had the same problem!
try not to copy & paste multiple files at once, rather copy whole folders!
at least it worked for me. I read about this problem somewhere else.
It just plain does not work. You would think that due to the lack of USB mass storage, Google, Samsung - whoever would have refined the MTP, but it's totally hit or miss. Do yourself a favor and get Airdroid from the market. It's free, and it works. Pretty damned dissapointing for a $700 phone.

I don't think so, lot's of people with issues. I think you will find Airdroid much faster than USB anyway.
That is really freakin annoying. This afternoon I transfered Gigs of Music, now it won't even let me copy pictures. I un- and reinstalled drivers, rebooted both PC and phone, still nothing. Can't even use Airdroid as I don't have a WiFi network here.
Yeah, I agree, MTP has been nothing but buggy for me as well. Sometimes it shows some folders, sometimes it shows them all. Same with files.
I just did a little learning about MTP http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Media_Transfer_Protocol interesting read. I wonder who is to blame for the bugginess, the host (initiator) or the device (responder)?
For me Unfortunately, MTP application has stopped problem is solved !!!
Read my post #6, problem is solved !!! very minor point but we tend to overlook it...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2547187
Do vote me Thanks if your problem is solved...:good:
I havent yet found any solutions to this problem and decided to ask here.
This happens at only Sense based roms!
When I connect my phone as usb disk drive to pc and than back %90 of the time my media files randomly disappear. Many of my music files gone missing and my selected rimgtone / alarm etc mp3 also returns to defaults. Videos photos randonly hidden from system as well.
The files are there but android os cant access them. Only way is using an app like SDRescan this solves the problem until I connect the phone again to transfer files...
Please I have tried everything from formatting the sdcard with fat32 again to searching for .nomedia hidden files etc etc. No solution worked yet.
Again only Sense roms do this. I used MIUI and CM7 too they didnt have this behaviour I never loose any files like this.
Extra info: My phone went to service and mainboard changed and the same thing is happeneing so I have no reason to belive it is about the phone.
Only Suspect: SDCard. (The default one that comes with the phone) But it is not really a strong suspect. Cause it works in other roms.
Anyone has any solution? This is driving me crazy and I want to use my phone with Andoroid revolution HD rom.
Any help is appreciated.
123 hits and noone has any idea?
Could be something related to mediaserver...Nothing comes in mind as I'm playing paintball right now. Does this happen on all sense ROM's, (2.x - 3.x) or ARHD in particular?
Sent from my DZ.
Oh god an answer finally!
Ok this is my history with Desire Z:
bought phone:
Stock Froyo -problem
upgrade:
Stock Gingerbread - problem
rooted:
CM7 : no problem
MIUI (bulletproof) : no problem
lets try sense again after a long time!:
Revolution HD Rom: Problem again!!!
BTW I am not a noob. I have prepared an s-off/root and custom rom guide for the most popular forum in my country and helped a lot of people to root their desire z's.
Running ARevoHD rom with swap and supercharge with out any other problems at the moment.
But this stupid bug is driving me crazy. I gotto run SDrescan app after every time I use my sdcard as a disk.
Eh, sorry for not replying earlier, just came back.
Now, the behaviour you explain is odd. Have you tried logcat and see if there's any relevant output? I'd look for "Mediaserver" first. By the way, have you tried plugging the phone to another computer? I'd try that too.
The behaviour I told you isnt very uncommon. Many people have this problem. HTC answer it by saying "format your sdcard" some people says it fixed theirs. But my problem still goes on. Also I dont know where to and how to look with logcat. This happens when I choose DISK mode when connected with usb. And than when you go back to normal mode mp3's are gone until you rescan.
I cant believe I am the only one having these issues here.
Shameless bump
What brand card do you have? And remember, XDA is not your Tech Support site.

People come in, they read it, but have no idea how to fix your problem, so they don't reply.
There could be a problem with the rom, where it doesn't mount the card properly. Also what OS are you running, and how do you unplug the phone? Many people ignore the saftey removal warning for flash drives an other devices, but sometimes it could be the culprit. Next time make sure you go through the process to safely remove hardware and xee if it happens again (On Windows, right click the little icon in the bottom right to safely remove, and on mac, drag the 'drive' to the trash bin (which changes to an eject button)
Nothing is changed how I remove my phone from USB. I tried everything and it seems unrelated how I unplug.
Because this happens when I change my phone from disk mode to charge mode even.
ALWAYS the same MP3's are lost I am sure because I change my ringtone to same mp3 everytime and when this happens that ringtone disappears from music player and I cant choose it from ringtone setup screen. So until I rescan my sdcard with an app I cant seem to see those mp3's. There is nothing wrong with MP3's too.
I am not sure if the problem is my SDcard or the general Sense based roms. I am truely lost in this case.
It never happens if I dont connect it to usb and change to disk mode.
My theory :
Somehow the mediaserver who archives the media files forgets half of my files when lost connecttion to sdcard. I dont know why or how.
i used to have the same problem, but it disappeared by it self i don't know how, try formatting it
Oh as I said in my original message I formatted my SD card with fat 32 system and this didnt work at all. I will try again but it is frustrating to backup gigabytes of data froma slow card meh
It is good that I am not the only one I hope to find some reasonable solution to this.
Like an idiot I did not remember that with the stupid internal SD card, the unlocking would delete pictures/videos/etc. is there a way to get it back? I am unlocked but not rooted. This is a friends phone and I'd appreciate any help getting his pictures back.
Why can't this freaking thing have an external SD card?
You can't, once it's wiped its wiped
If he had google+ his pictures may be backed up to his account

I hope that decision isn't based on this one experience with the pics being deleted.. Because you know it would have been extremely easy to just transfer them to your computer via USB before unlocking and then transfer them back after.
It is possible I have recovered wiped files off of an sd card before although not the nexus's internal storage. the software recuva is free and should work. The key is that you do not want to write any files over the data that is gone, the more data overwritten the less chance of recovering. You might be able to recover some files off the storage with this program. Although I am not entirely sure how the nexus erases files through the unlocking process
everywhere warns you to backup because it will do a full wipe.
your fault, not the nexus.
Just had a thought...if you have a USB OTG adapter, you can try hooking up a USB drive and then use dd to dump all of /data to the drive. There are many file recovery tools that are able to analyze such dumps.

not just this experience but in general I hate the fact that this phone does not have an SD card. I understand that we are going to cloud computing and the iPhone lovers have had it this way for a while and blah blah blah... I just feel more secure knowing that if I accidently drop my phone in the toilet (done that) or go in the pool while my phone is in the pocket of my swimsuit (done that too, why the hell do they make swimsuit with pockets is beyond me), I could get the SD card out and be able to recover some of my data. I guess we all have our quirks. I just love the little micro SD card.

Great suggestions, hopefully I won't need it in the future. The owner of the phone convinced me that it wasn't worth it. It was just an embarrasing thing. I should have known better.

That won't work. You cannot use dd to dump /data because you need somewhere to write the dump. /sdcard is located on /data, and a USB OTG mounts in /sdcard, so it becomes circular.

I too was turned off at first by lack of ext storage, but now I dont even miss it. The phone seems to run smoother without having the ext card imo, dont have to worry about read/write speeds and compatibility. As far as recovering data from ext.. All my pics/vids are instantly uploaded to Photobucket as soon as I snap them, contacts/calendars/email are saved to Google. You can usually always just re-download ROMs/mods, not that you would instantly need them anyways if your phone is gone - plus anything like that you felt was too important to loose should be backed up to Box/Dropbox anyways. Did I miss anything that might be on the card you think you need? Because I almost guarantee I can find/already have a solution to that too.

You're right. It's probably that you can't teach an old dog new tricks
Another downfall of an sd card you forgot is the corruption issue. I've had a few go bad on me over the years, which probably can happen to the internal one also but hopefully the quality is better with an oem.
I don't like the mtp either. I've setup gmtp for my Linux box but this thing can't be easily used on just anything as a mass storage device on the road. Hate it although that may have benefits too.
I do have a Nook Color that can be brought back to life from all kinds of trouble with a bootable sd card.

Very true. There are great advantages and there are disadvantages to removable storage. For the most part it always good to have the option. I, for one, am a data hoarder and would have loved to have the option. But I am very happy with the Nexus and glad I decided to take the chance on it. That was all I meant in my first post, just that I hope your not turned off by a device you like just because of the lack of removable storage. And your right about trying to teach a old dog new tricks. I still love and prefer all my oldschool apps even though there are new ones that may look/function better lol.
Man your friend must be pissed at you..
I suggest that you take a look at this android photo recovery solution which seems very helpful.
hope this helps.
Every time I mount my card to the puter it wants to fix it. I haven't let it. Should I do this next time? Take it out and copy it first or what? Help!!
Yeah, should see there is no problem, atleast thats what Ive seen. Happened to me twice over a 2 year period, never touched any of the files either time.

Just back it up. Plug it up, let it "fix" it. If it doesn't format it, then you're good. If it does, load everything back on to it, and you're good.

Well if the files are messed up - they'll be messed up on your HDD also. My phone gets the exact same message when I connect it in MS mode. Not a big deal as long as everything is working fine then just skip the message. Odds are it'll happen again anyway.
Oh well I copied files and then let the puter fix it. Thanks everyone for your input! At least I know that I am not the only one. I haven't checked to see if it will do it again.
It can happen with any removable flash media or drives if you disconnect without using the remove safely in the tray of the task bar. In the past (say Windows 98) when you copied a file to removable media it actually wasn't completely written. You could go hours and unless you safely removed or shut down the machine it would never flush what was left to the flash device.
The reason for that as the default was to improved perceived performance... I believe. The behavior is changeable in windows but I believe the default behavior on say 7 is to write immediately. Less chance of anything being wrong still a good chance it wants to run scan disk. Its just an annoying you didn't do it right and windows wants to make sure your unhappy with yourself kind of message. Though it has, had a purpose, still does.
I think W7 does that also. The delayed write, yes? I've removed things before and received the lovely "Windows delayed write could not write files because the devices was removed" or something to that extent.
Maybe it was the computer at work (XP)...

W7 has the option to use delayed write or not. I believe it can be changed through the properties on the flash device itself, but I will have to verify that when I am at a PC.

My wife's external sd card is going, possibly already bad. She has an HTC vivid and use the picture folder for her lockscreen. Its been showing an error but sometimes, less and less, works. I put it in the computer and it says it needs formatted. Not good. I have kids pics I would really like to save. Is there any tools for something like this. She is kinda distraught so any advice would greatly appriciated.
MiniTool Power Data Recovery is free, and works well.
Also, see if your SD card can be replaced on warranty. It won't get your data back, but at least you'll get a new card.

Thanks. I'll give it a try and let you know if it works. I have never had one go bad before so this is new learning. Thankfully I have semi recent backup so it may not be a total loss if I cant access it. Really, in fairness to phone brands, if I had been using HTC Syc or Kies for me, I wouldnt have to worry about it. Damn pain in the ass, useful software!

For the future, you can also look into cloud services which will automatically upload pictures you take on your phone, to the cloud. Pogoplug and Ubuntuone do it, and I think Dropbox does as well (I don't use Dropbox).
