[Q] Hox no longer visible on USB - HTC One X

Hi,
I'm running Cyanogenmod 10.1 (20130312-Nightly-endeavoru) for some time now.
I'ts time for a new version, but to do that I need to copy de vendor blob to my HOX.
However, for some unknown reason I cannot get a USB connection from my PC to the phone anymore.
Windows doesn't recognize the plugging in of the cord anymore. Both ADB devices and FASTBOOT devices show NO device attached.
USB debuggingmode is on.. so that can't be the problem. I reinstalled the htc-sync software to make sure drivers are installed properly..
I'm out of options of what to check further.
Any bright minds out there who can assist ?
Thanks,
Paul

Try disabling usb debugging, that should solve usb mass storage.

makes no difference. HOX tells me USB storage is in use, with an orange/yellowish android-robot in the screen.
Still no sign from explorer and/or adb and/or fastboot
there is something rotten in the kingdom of denmark

Go to recovery > mounts and storage > mount usb storage.
Alternatively you can use adb when booted to recovery.

Hey, Thanks !! That seems to work. :good:
Question: Any idea why I can't have a connection outside of Recovery ?

Don't know what's the cause but it's likely fixed by doing a full wipe before installing the nightly and flashing the boot.img.

I'm afraid that's not going to happen. To flash boot.img I would need fastboot, and fastboot isn't finding the device..
A nice chicken-egg paradox
I'll try an update from the CM menu...

And it used to work before ?
Are you sure the device is in fastboot mode? (FASTBOOT USB displayed in red)
How about drivers on your PC?

1) Yes, it used to work.
2) I wasn't trying to make the connection from recovery. Just the normal phone-mode, plug in the usb cable, pick USB connection from the menu, and activate USB storage.
3) Nothing really changed on my PC, and reinstalling HTC Sync software didn't do the trick. Drivers must still be good.
I've updated from the CM menu and now run CM 10.1 20130403-NIGHTLY-endeavoru (build date: Tue Apr 23:13:27 PDT 2013)
This hasn't changed my USB problem.

I meant the fastboot, it only works in fastboot mode.
Boot to bootloader by holding vol- and power. Select fastboot from the lil menu.
Now do fastboot devices and it should work.

Ah - of course.
Yes, in fastbootmode, fastboot devices gives the device name.
ADB still refuses to answer
uninstalled the HTC drivers, and reinstalled from scratch. Still no USB connection in explorer
Gonna try a different computer tomorrow.
Thanks, so far

Huh, you don't need ADB in order to flash boot image. Once you do that, usb issues should be gone
Put the correct boot.img to your fastboot folder and
fastboot flash boot boot.img
Sent from my IceCold One X

The usb issue is definitely a PC related issue
I connected the hox with a laptop, and it worked as normal.
Now to find out why the pc won't recognise the hox anymore.
thanks for thinking along
btw, do I need to flash the boot.img when I update CM from the About >> CM updates menu ?
the kernel is now: 3.1.10-cyanogenmod+
[email protected] #1

Keep an eye on the changelog, if it says "kernel" or "ramdisk", you need to flash the boot image.

I don't know my friend has this on his hox, running venom and it has this issue across multiple pcs, operating systems and usb cables.
Mounts fine in recovery/fastboot but in sense its nope.
He has just got it back from repair so maybe that was the cause.

I'm running Cyanogenmod, which is non-sense
My laptop at work has the same issue - no connection possible.
So, I have a pc and a laptop that won't work, and one laptop that is working ok...
weird, and hard to pinpoint the underlying problem

Hi, I have the same problem as you. I treid root my one x and now, it has clockworkmod on it, but no back up, no stock rom and no rom on the phones hd. I can confirm that in command prompt the device is found, but the phone is not visible on my computer/usb wise for me to put a rom/files onto the phone so I could get a rom on it and make it work again. Right now my phone is just an expensive brick. I tried doing the recovery option but says failed due to low power, the dman thing was plugged in all day and would not even turn on at first. Can anyone help me? Thanks and sorry for adding to your original thread/problem post.
Cheers
Ate you charging using USB connected to your computer or outlet? Try outlet.
Sent from my One X using xda app-developers app
If you have clockworkmod older than 5.8.4.0, you should update it. Then you can charge from recovery and mount the drive as USB to copy ROMs on.
Just know that cheap USB cables, although looking solid may not be good enough to transfer data. THe phone detects this and defaults to a non-data enabled mode. Get a different USB cable and try again.

Fastboot Not Working and CWM Not Installing

Hello, I'm having some problems with my HTC One X.
When trying to send commands to the phone while it is in fastboot, cmd says "waiting for device" and doesn't change.
My bootloader is unlocked and CWM Recovery is installed although when I try and install one of the 4 ROM's I have on my phones internal storage the installer looks like it's working until it gets to around 20% and then says it is complete. When the device restarts it gets stuck on the "HTC quietly brilliant" screen. I am however still able to mount the phone and put files onto it through CWM. I have tried to use RUU and this just gives an error about USB not connected.
If you think you can help, thank you and if you need to know anything else I will try and give you as much information as I can.
Thanks,
Andy
Here's a checklist for you:
Phone in fastboot mode
Correct drivers installed
ADB/fasboot up to date
What does 'fastboot devices' return?
Yeah, it was all working earlier today but it just seemed to stop. fastboot devices returns

What OS is your computer running? Does it say FASTBOOT USB on phone display?
I have a macbook pro as my main computer but all things to do with rooting I do on a windows desktop.
This display says fastboot usb but all fastboot commands do nothing and it still doesn't show up in fastboot devices.

Reboot pc and phone if you haven't already.
You could try it with your mac, there's plenty of guides out there on how to setup.
Make sure to use sudo!!
Tried it on mac like you suggested, still no devices listed. And installations still only get to around 20%.
Do you think it's bricked?

No way of installing ROM

I need help getting out of this never ending misery. I'm stuck with my unlocked Desire HD, no ROM, and no idea how to get one working. I can't even get back to stock.
I've been looking for solutions for a week now, but it seems the combination of S-ON, no USB debugging and an unlocked bootloader makes most of them undoable.
I am able to get into boot loader, and the currently installed 4eXT recovery.
See attached file for bootloader screen.
Can anyone help me get my phone to work again? Either by a custom ROM or HTC stock; whatever.
Thanks.
What is the problem? What happens when you install a ROM? If you get stuck on the splash screen read my signature.

It gets stuck on the HTC loading screen or on the black screen directly after depending on what I install. Don't I need USB debugging to use fastboot? I'm only getting < waiting for device > when flashing via fastboot.
My device is not listed when using adb devices.

Yes, I did read your thread. But it doesn't work since it's not getting a connection to the device.
See attached image.
So you're booting into hboot, navigating to fastboot with your volume keys, and selecting it with the power key? If so, and fastboot still isn't getting a connection, I have no idea. Maybe check your cable or your USB port connectivity.

Yes. It does say FASTBOOT USB and I can see the device in the Device Manager. I also have the Android SDK Tools as well as the Google USB Driver installed.
I always thought you needed USB debugging on on the phone to get access to the phone's system folders.

No, USB debugging (aka ADB) is separate from fastboot. ADB kicks in when you boot the ROM. Fastboot is from the bootloader. Fastboot doesn't access the system's individual folders. It's used to flash entire images.
Not to worry, for I have solved the problem. I was apparently missing a driver that didn't get installed since I was missing USB debugging mode when installing adb and fastboot on my PC.
Going into Device Manager and manually looking up the HTC driver solved it.
Thanks for your time.

hello! I had the same issue recently, so I solved it by next actions: I typed in the Windows command line(cmd.exe) 'pnputils -e', so I could see all drivers I have installed and their 'oem*.inf' files. I had 4 HTC drivers, it was like they were in a conflict. Then I deleted each driver with next command: 'pnputils -f -d <oem file name>.inf'. So after that, I plugged in the cable and the HOX was recognized by the computer!
Report back if that helped you!

i was having a similar (not exactly same) problem that on CM 10.2, my phone storage was not being mounted on my pc but it mounted in recovery and fastboot... this is what i did..
Connect your phone to pc, go to device manager from control panel and see if the device shown with a yellow triangle.
right click it, chose to update driver software, select manually from a list, chose android adb interface from list, then either chose google or htc (depending on your rom, for CM, prefer google).. Your phone will be recognised by pc

USB Problem

I have formatted my desktop computer few days back and since then I cant connect my One X to my PC
I have searched all the thread but cant find a solution to my problem therefor I am creating this new thread..
Here are the points
1) Installed latest HTC drivers
2) My other phone gets connected without any problem that means only my one x is having the problem
3) I am using kitkat aosp rom maybe thats why my computer cant detect the phone
4) When I connect my phone to computer, it starts to install the drivers. All drivers get installed successfully except "Android Phone" and device manager shows Android Phone with a yellow exclamation mark.
5) adb commands dont show any device connected.
6) I tried to enable and disable usb debugging
7) I tried to boot into bootloader and then fastboot commands work (I tried erase cache and devices commands)
8) So is there any way I can use adb commands from my computer while my phone is booted ?
try this
1)disable debug mode then connect your phone and mount sd card
2)if above step doesnt work, enable debug mode, connect your phone, mount sd card then disable debug mode.
or
3)mount sd card from recovery
or
4)use sense rom
since I flashed kitkat rom, i have to disable usb debugging before clicking 'turn on usb storage'. Only then my pc will detect my phone
