Koodo SGH-T989D - slow, lags - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-T989

Picked up a Koodo SGH-T989D SII a few weeks ago. The device is running Icecream Sandwich.. I find it lags and has response issues.
Apparently jellybean is not yet out for it, I tried connecting the phone last night to Kies to check for an update because the device does not have a OTA option in Settings but KIES is such a POS software that I nearly pulled my hair out.
The software will just not detect the phone being plugged in.. not matter what I tried.
What are my options? Can I install jellybean from another carrier on this phone?

Root your phone. Check out the development thread for this phone. There are many stable if not perfect JB roms in there.

Well if you ONLY root you will preserve your items (if you do it the proper method)
But if you want to transfer game saves and such (Google sadly doesn't backup all the data..) when you want to flash Jellybean for example, you can use Titanium Backup

Well only rooting will not get me anywheres and resolve the issue I am seeing.
So basically I would have to use titaniumBackup do a proper backup, then root and flash jellybean, then restore the backup?
Also Titanium Backup in the play store is showing *root besides it.. Does that mean I need to be rooted in order to use it? Basically not even being able to backup the stuff this initial first root?

Rooting initially will not erase any memory according to this post, so you can root, then download Titanium Backup and backup, and then do a nandroid backup in the recovery if you don't like the next ROM you might use.

Root first, then install titanium backup (sorry I tried to post a link to rooting, but I'm new here so I'm prevented from posting links).
Anyways, once you root and install Titanium backup to backup your apps & data, then you can flash a custom ROM. Make sure to make a Nandroid backup first (Google it) in case you change your mind. There are a lot of choices. Jedi Jelly is good and has a similar look and feel (Touchwiz) to the ROM that came with your phone. AOKP and Cyanogenmod are very popular alternatives that look a bit different but also work quite well.

[Q] fix the evo market after root

After rooting my sprint evo 4g my market no longer works. I have tried the advice from gat (gadgets and tablets) but that did not work. What do I do???
Need more specifics. "Not working" is very general haha
Does this mean:
1) Won't load
2) Won't download apps
3) Isn't showing up at all
4) Is just force closing like it's its job
It will let me even search for an ap most of the time but will not let me download and will force close every time. This puts a damper on tethering because I cannot download the wireless tether after root ap. I'm still on clockwork mod and rooted via unrevoked
I'm actually downloading another ROM, MikFroYo 4.5, in hopes that flashing another ROM would give the market another chance to work properly. All the people I know that have rooted androids, including one with an evo, have fully working markets and can still download aps. I am not sure of another way to get the wireless tether after root or titanium backup. I have been trying to learn from forums and google but I seem to be coming to a dead end on this topic. It seems to be happening to some other people but nobody has given them a useful answer it seems. The best answer I found was from GAT but they were specifically doing the process on a tablet and after trying this process my market was still a lame duck. Also, while someone is checking on this thread (thanks so much by the way, this is the second time I tried to get some feedback on this forum and the first went by unanswered for about a half a week), what would be a good ROM that would not take away 4g capabilities, let me get an ap back like sprint t.v. but still allow most sprint aps (nascar, blockbuster, nova, etc.) to be deleted (although I think I can do this with titanium backup if I can ever get it downloaded), improve speed and battery life, and not be very glitchy/buggy?

Okay, go to the 2nd post in this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=900584
There's a .zip for the stock android market. Boot into recover (if you don't have rom manager, turn off phone, volume down + power, select recovery) and flash the zip. Should install the working stock market. I used it when I uninstalled updates using Titanium Back-up and it deleted my whole market.
thanks dude i'll check it out.

eww, I had high hopes but it still force closes when I try and download wireless tether. Any other suggestions? In the mean time I'm going to see if using another ROM might help the situation...maybe give it a fresh start or something.
Yeah same story after new ROM...not able to download anything yet anybody else had the same problem and came out on top/would love to hear your solution?
What rom were u running first? Try flashing a stock rooted rom? If that doesn't work try ruu but leave s-off so it's easy to re-root quckly.

clockwork standard untouched from unrevoked and now mikfroyo 4.5...still no luck. I'll try another ROM but I think I have to have a new market or something like that. Is ruu unrooting?
Are you wiping data and cache each time you flash a new ROM? If not, you probably need to.
Are you restoring apps with Titanium Backup after flashing the new ROM? If so, only restore user apps (i.e. don't restore system apps). I've seen some squirrelly things happened when restoring system apps.
Last thing, from your home screen, try going in to Settings...Applications...Manage Applications. Tap on the "All" tab at the top and scroll down to Market and select it. Tap on the "Clear Data" button under Cache.
think i got it under control
You need to reflash gapps if you flashed a new cm rom

Backing up stuff

Hi. What do I need in order to backup my SMS, emails, gmail, google and samsung accounts settings, general phone settings, etc, as I assume they'll get wiped if I flash firmware? Apps I'm not to bothered, I'll make a list then redownload.
Clockwork mod..
Google account sync...
Titanium backup...
My backup pro...
SMS backup from market is free for SMS.
Thanks for the suggestions. Seeing as how Titanium backup and My backup pro are all in one backup apps, they interest me the most. My Backup Pro is most appealing to me, looks dead easy to use.
But the titanium one says I need to be rooted, is that right? But I'm not rooted, so I guess it won't back up my stuff?
My Backup Pro, according to someone, you need to pay to have extra online storage as it only gives you 100mb?
It also says it needs to be rooted: "NOTE: Data/setting of applications can only be supported if you have a rooted phone, or if the application integrates with us."
Depending on the rom, you may not need to wipe.
I would recommend Titanium backup, it can do everything you want.
You cant restore everything, in titamium backup, items in red are ones you shouldnt restore unless you are willing to risk things breaking, green is for useful+safe things (eg sms's, account settings, call history) and user apps can for the most part be back'ed up and restores however you wish (data+app, just data).
You will need a rooted phone, which means odin flashing a kernel.

Thanks veyka. Ah well, I don't think I'll bother then since you confirmed i need a rooted phone, it's more hassle than it's worth. Guess I'll get the free SMS app which was suggested, redownload apps myself, transfer photos and movies manually to my hard drive, and re-do my phone settings. Not bothered about emails really since they're all duplicated on my pc anyway.
"Depending on the rom, you may not need to wipe." Well, all I want to do is upgrade from android 2.3.3 to 2.3.4 on my stock ROM to improve battery life.
Apparently I need to use ODIN which will wipe stuff, unless that's not the case or unless there's some other way to upgrade to 2.3.4 without losing stuff on the phone?

Ye, I was considering that from a warranty pov amongst other things. Is there word on an approximate relase date? Also, I don't have WI-FI for Kies Air. Will it be a file I can download to PC then use kies to transfer to my phone, just like I do now when connecting the USB cable and Kies comes up on screen then shows my phone's internal storage on my PC screen?

Few Newbie Questions

Hi guys,
OK, so I'm not really a newbie as I loaded Android onto my HD2, both SD and NAND versions (RIP HD2 ).
But, it has been a while and I have a couple of questions I've been trying to find answers to:
I got my nexus though vodafone UK, if this makes a difference.
Can I root this phone without wiping the device? I'm currently quite happy with the stock rom , but I'd like to push some custom boot animations, etc.
I've been looking into backing up apps that I've downloaded as I don't currently have wifi access - I do get unlimited data for a few months, but it'll take ages to download it all again!
Titanium Backup was my first port of call, but says it requires root...
And lastly, if I were to use Titanium to back up, say, a game, would my progress in that game be saved?
Many thanks for any info

Rooting your phone doesnt wipe your device, however in order to root your phone you will need to unlock the bootloader which is a very simple process but this process DOES wipe your device. It only needs to be performed once though but without doing it you wont be able to do anything else.
Use the Sticky Thread to find out how to install fastboot drivers which you will need to unlock the bootloader. Then you can use pauls r3 Superboot to root the phone.

Any app that will backup your apps/settings will require root. You can also flash ClockworkMod and make a NAND backup of your device, then restore the DATA partition on a new Rom to restore your apps.

Question about upgrading

Until the OTA release of JB I was running an unlocked/rooted Galaxy Nexus with custom recovery, franco kernel, and the standard 4.0.4 rom. I was pretty happy with my setup, but then I was alerted to the JB release which I wanted.
So, I reflashed stock/unrooted/OEM locked... and got the OTA release of 4.1.1
Luckily google re-downloaded all my apps, I restored images/etc, and I used SMS backup+ to get back my SMS history and call logs.. BUT, there were still problems.. I had to re-customize my desktop icons and widgets, and I lost lots of other app data. I EXPECTED THIS to happen, but it's still frustrating. Luckily my phone is only two weeks old, so it's no major.
Anyway, moving forward I would like to unlock and root my phone again.. and I'm wondering, what are the best practices for restoring your data.. I don't want a JB update in a couple weeks to cause me all this pain again.
Thanks!
Titanium Backup will restore apps and data. If you use a custom launcher, some give you an option to backup your homescreen locations. When it comes down to it, there will still be some things to setup again.
If you stay stock then another update won't wipe your device... only switching ROMs will.
Thanks

Thanks for your response. Titanium Backup looks perfect. I found I wasn't able to upgrade to the new OTA without going back to full stock (lock, unroot, OEM lock, etc)... is it possible to update from stock ROM even while being rooted, etc?

Bootloader lock/unlock state doesn't change your ability to receive and apply an OTA.
If you're rooted, you can still apply the OTA, it'll just break root. Some people have success using "OTA root keeper" apps that "hide" your root while you OTA then restore it after.

I'm going to assume that you have already installed the TWRP custom recovery. You probably already know that you have to do that before you can obtain root. Aside from being able to flash custom ROMs, none available right now, there are a number of apps that you can install that do a number of things that you cannot do without root. I'll list a few that I use and what they do but the list is not all encompassing:
--Titanium Backup (root)--a great tool for freezing unwanted apps, backing up apps/data etc
--Greenify--enables you to set user installed apps to "hibernate" a few minutes after you have finished using them. Significantly improves battery life.
--LagFix--an app, when run, that can eliminate "lag" when/if it occurs on the phone most of the time.
--SD Maid--a great file manager app that enables you to control which apps start at power on, enables the user to really clean out cache, duplicate files, orphaned files and compact databases. Saves memory resources and keeps your phone running smooth and clean.
--adaway--as the name implies, keeps those pesky little ads from showing up in apps.
--exposed--a favorite of many users. Enables you to customize a number of settings, notifications etc.
That's the apps I use that can only be run with root. I'm sure some other users will chime in here an provide some other things that root offers.
Thanks , I got root last night
First are there things I should enable or disable to protect root. Is it OK to run the My Verizon app and VZ Protect. Are there any applications that I should not run?

You can run anything you want, it's not going to hurt root. Root is really only a door, or access, to settings/system files that you wouldn't normally have. Any app that you can run without root can be run safely with root. The opposite is not true. There are a number of apps that cannot be run without root. A good way to find most of the apps that require root is to go to the Play Store and just search for "root apps". There's a bunch out there that you may want to try.

The only thing you have to be aware of to protect root is taking an OTA update. Now that you have a custom recovery and root the likely hood that you would be able to find and download an OTA is not likely, but if by chance you receive a notice that an OTA is available do not download and install it. If by chance the phone automatically downloads it and tries to install it, the OTA should fail so you'll be alright.
Be careful not to flash or ODIN a retail firmware. That is probably the biggest warning I can offer. Retail firmware, when flashed, will lock your bootloader. You can flash a modem or a kernel or a recovery, but not the entire firmware .tar md5 file.

By the way. Since you are new to root and custom recoveries, the first thing you should do, right now, is do a backup. Power off your phone, go into TWRP recovery (hold down the volume up, home and power buttom all at the same time). Continue to hold them down until you see the TWRP splash screen, then you can let them go. From the on screen menu select backup. Choose which file you want backed up. I recommend you do boot, system, data, modem, EFS and recovery as a minimum. After the backup is complete return to the main menu and select reboot. Do it right now

I'm not sure, I don't use it. But, if I remember correctly I think you go into settings>more networks>and turn on mobile hotspot. But again, I don't use it so I'm not sure. Have you done your backup yet? It is the only safety net you will have until a developer releases a ROM we can flash. Don't look for Samsung to release any firmware for the Developer Edition...it ain't going to happen. Your backup and TWRP are the ONLY safety net you have right now. I can't emphasize that enough.

It's diffidently a good idea to have a recent backup and the original backup of your stock ROM. The only problem with a lot of backups is keeping straight what backup is what and the amount of space they consume. Memory is cheap I know, but backups can eat up storage real fast, LOL.
Yes. Agree with space but every backup I do, I also have my TWRP folder sync'd to my Dropbox account. So what ever changes are made go their. I also save them on the laptop as well as a thumb drive. Been burned once on my note 3. Now, is there the stock md5 file for the developers edition like on the note 3's?

No there is not a stock md5 for the DE and there most likely will not be. In the past Samsung has never released a firmware package for their DE phones, not that I have ever seen anyway. What your phone came with is what you got. NO OTAs and no updates of any kind in the future...that's if Samsung behaves like they have in the past. That's why making a good back up of your stock (no root) when you first get recovery is so important. And, making a backup after root of course.
Do you mind me asking how you sync..............
