[Q] Safe way to remove unwanted apps from stock ROM? - Sony Xperia S, Acro S, Ion

Is there safe way to remove apps like Facebook, Google+, and other apps that I never use from the stock ROM without flashing any new ROMs?

You can use Root Explorer or Solid Explorer and delete it manually.

Thanks. What I did was use ROM Toolbox's app manager. It seemed to have done the job perfectly, also let me analyze the apps before hand.
Just a reference for other people: rooting was required.

A safer way (for me anyway) is to freeze the app instead of deleting it.
If you want to just freeze the app, (one day you may want it or deleting it messes with your phone) use root explorer or something like it, go to system/app, find the app you want, long press it & menu appears, choose rename (you will need to mount it to r/w at top of page), change the .apk part to .bak or .txt, that's it off your system but easy to retrieve, just change the name back to .apk if you need it again.
I think this method is good practice, especially for us noobs, you can always delete at a later date.

Thanks, will probably do that in the future as it did have a freeze feature also.
Has anyone actually experienced anything negative from deleting Facebook, Google+, Twitter and their respective extensions from the stock ROM?

You can use SYSTEMAPP REMOVER.
You can backup the app and if you want it back restore.... It even shows what is safe to remove. Sent me PM for the app

[Q] How do I uninstall uninstallable apps?

For instance, I install a ROM that includes an app which I TOTALLY don't want, but will not let me uninstall through app manager, or even an app on the rooted stock version if I didn't want to use a custom ROM.... is there some sort of combination of Superuser Permissions and another app? I thought I remember reading something about a file explorer w/SU that lets you do that, but I can't find the post. =[
Use Titanium Backup, can uninstall pretty much anything

If you rooted system app remover from the market.

Faaaaaaantastic! TiB worked like a charm =] Cheers mate!
Also, the explorer you were referring to is called root explorer. That works great. I used it to go into /system/apps and rename all the Sprint crap to .bak at the end of the file type, and they no longer run or show in app drawer. But they're not deleted, in case you ever need them back.
Download Titanium Backup, go to setting and enable "Chuck Norris" mode, and you are good to go. Definitely check out the safe to delete thread and don't uninstall anything that has to do with Google Talk. It will screw up your market downloads.

The latest version of Titanium Backup will colour the system apps red, so you know what you're getting into.
Avoid apps that you can't see on the apps drawer and it should be fine.
You can delete these programs from system/app in the rom zip file before you flash it.

Before removing anything form Leedroid look at the wiki to see which apps can be removed safely. You can delete apps that are not on the list but if you run i to issues you know why.
do i do this on the phone or on my pc? any special software needed?
thanks in advance
Yes.
To delete the apps from the zip you need special software like winzip or winrar, high tech stuff.
Just go to he /system/app/ directory and remove what you don't want and know it's safe.
And for example, if you want to make your life harder use ADB via recovery.
There are other methods too, if you are not satisfied with the zip editing.

Ok cool. I had never opened rom's zip file before, didn't realise I could 'play ' with it like that
Will experiment later, after a back up!

I'm not sure if it's the best practice, but I always trim my zip files without actually unzipping them (right click unzip).
You actually have an alternative if you're already installed and suddenly feel to lazy to wipe your phone. Get titanium, then go to the list of apps, long press, then choose "force remove app".
Although I'm not sure if it will cause any conflicts with your ROM.
Safety first!
I've been using this tutorial for removing stock apps.. works perfectly..

How to remove unused Sony applications?

I have seen some people have managed to removed built in applications (after rooting phone). I would like to do it too on my xperia Arc s so does anyone how to do it? Thanx in advance...
You can use titanium backup or root explorer.
Titanium is better as it will remove the icons etc.
Recommend you backup 1st before remove incase you need them.
This should be in q&a

Y U NO USE AppMan?
It is free and tells you which apps can be safely removed... plus if you want them back you can directly download and install them using the same app.
Original thread here.
I see what you did there! Thanx!

My Bad. But Root Explorer is best.
There is a new file manager out there called solid explorer, in Landscape mode you can 2 directory lists, and can just about do anything root explorer can do too.
Its worth a try anyhow as I couldn't get into root explorer.. me too noob

I've removed some programs through root uninstaller. Such as gmail. I didn't make backups.

Probably have to wipe data and reinstall roms or try flashing a Gapps package.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using Tapatalk
some apps, such as gmail, can be downloaded from the market. For others have you tried pulling the apks from your rom.zip and placing them in /system/app?
While it is normally fine to remove certain system apps (I routinely strip down every rom I install of certain apps), getting them back can be a pain sometimes if you're not sure how to do it. Another way to achieve the same goal is to 'freeze' all the apps you don't want to use. They won't show in the app list and they won't run in the background but they will still be there if you ever need them.

I would wipe data if it doesn't work reflash the rom.
Some of the stuff you may have removed may be best resolved by reflashing the build that you're using. For example, I use Gmail and another mail app, no need for Exchange or the stock email. I used to not back these up so when I actually needed to test something it was off to ODIN my phone again . Now I use TB and back it up before I remove it.
This is very simple to fix. It should never be a pain to accomplish either.
1: Find the apps you want to restore in the rom you flashed (if you don't have the original .zip, download it or a similar rom). Use 7zip or WinRAR to open the rom file.
2. Copy the apps you want to your sdcard.
3. Use Root Explorer or similar app to move or copy the apps to /system/app (you will need to make sure your file explorer can mount the /system in rw)
4. Reboot and enjoy
Basically you just want to pull the apps from a copy or the rom you flashed or a similar one (ICS>ICS GB>GB). Then move those apps to /system/app and reboot. The phone will reinstall them when it boots back up.

You are rooted, right?
Use any file explorer out there and delete the desired .apk files from /system/app/. The apps'll be permanently gone!
