Hello I know there is a lot of guides but with the different rising number of users lurking among the community I thought it'd be nice to release a guide with how to update to the official Virgin Mobile GB28 (4.1.2), as well root it manually.. because hell I love doing things manually.
Legal: I'm not held responsible if you manage to somehow lose connection between your device and computer within the process or if for some freak reason your device choose to blow up because it was a sleeper cell! =))
How to update manually:
Step 1:
Have a stable USB cord and a reliable power supply!
Step 2:
Download and install the Virgin Mobile USB drivers for the samsung galaxy S2 if you have no samsung drivers installed currently. Also, Reboot your PC after installing the drivers.
Click this text to download drivers!
Step 3:
Download a reliable Odin version such as 3.04! I personally use this version linked blow. Don't forget to extract the folder as it is zipped.
Click this text to download odin 3.04!
(Thanks to Rwilco12 for download link!)
Step 4:
Download the Virgin Mobile tar file for GB28 from the download link below:
GB28 Tar download here!
Step 5:
Open up odin, click the "PDA" option and select the tar you downloaded name "SPH-D710VMUB.GB28.tar"
Step 6:
Put your phone into download mode.
Step 7:
Confirm phone is connected to odin (It'll shown a com:6 or so in yellow), and press start!
Step 8:
Once it is done flashing you'll be done.
How to root GB28
Step 1:
Download a kernel with a recovery such as GB27 repacked found in the link below:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2193849
Step 2:
Download SuperSU v1.25 via link below and move it into your internal memory or micro sd card.
http://download.chainfire.eu/315/SuperSU/UPDATE-SuperSU-v1.25.zip
Step 3:
Open up odin and select the "PDA" slot, then select the GB27 kernel tar. Once selected press "Start".
Step 4:
Once phone reboots turn off phone and reboot into recovery (Vol up+Power button).
Step 5:
Click install zip and select choose from internal or sd card option, then choose the SuperSU file named "UPDATE-SuperSU-v1.25.zip".
Step 6:
Once file is flashed, reboot phone and enjoy! =)
Step 7:
Flash back to Stock GB28 Kernel if you wish to using the flashable zip below:
http://d-h.st/y1n
Thank you for using my guide, please give it a thanks if you'd like!

Yes, you will retain root. You'll just be replacing the custom recovery with Stock. If you want the options to do such things as make a nandroid backup, flash zips, etc, you'll need to flash a custom recovery to do so. I do know Garwynn is working on a source Kernel with Agat's recovery and will be posted once he get's it completed.

To have a recovery again just flash the GB27 repacked kernel or the GB28 repacked. I'm not sure if they're released yet repacked for boost and virgin mobile repacked

Being that the GB28 link is the low ship tar, no, you shouldn't have to roll backwards to flash that in Odin. You are advised to backup everything prior, as with any flashing. I haven't seen comments on the internal memory being wiped with this so, until someone confirms that the tar doesn't, assume that it will and save everything just in case.
If you plan on using Kies to update, you will need to be on a stock official build.
Hi. I have succeeded with all the steps listed above except for step 7. How exactly would you flash back to kernel GB28? Sorry, I am kinda a newbie in this field.
Hello,
I have a SPH-D710VMUB with 4.1.2 GB28.
I downloaded Odin304
I downloaded GB27 tar
I downloaded superuser zip
When I open Odin, sellect PDA, and sellect GB27 tar, and press start nothing happens at all.
In the window it says OSM all threads complete suceed 0/fail 0
What could I be doing wrong?
Thanks
Chris

If you want to go back to GB28 then download the zip and put the GB28 zip on the internal storage of your phone or the sdcard if you have one and flash it through recovery.

When you open Odin and plug the phone in via usb does the box on the top left of Odin say "com" then a number? If it doesn't say "com' and a number then Odin is not recognizing your phone and you should reinstall drivers.

Been seeing a lot of post about how to install OTA with a rooted stock ROM. This is by far the easiest way for people to update and not lose any data. All are done using Odin 3.07 on Windows 7 and not going to link it or how to use it lots of tutorials out that show you.
To put in Download Mode -> Vol Down + Home + Power
To Boot into Recovery -> Vol Up + Home + Power
Things needed:
ROM
CWM-Recovery
Root zip file
ROMS
NOTE: These are the FULL firmware of LH1 and NOT small OTA. This is good to have as a backup should something go wrong.
Bell
Telus
Rogers
Sasktel
CWM-Recovery
See Attached, this is an Official CWM from CWM team. If you don't want to use this use whatever recovery you want or had before.
Root: MOVE THIS TO PHONE STORAGE
Chainfire SuperSU
1.) Boot into recovery and create backup, always better to backup
2.) Unzip firmware file and you will see 2 files a dll and md5. The one we need is the md5
Im with bell so mines is -> KIES_HOME_I747MVLALH1_I747MOYCALH1_20120814.100513_REV04_user_low_ship.tar.md5
3.) Put phone into download mode
4.) Load Odin select PDA and select the firmware file you unzipped in step 2. The MD5 file.
5.) Let the phone do its thing and do not touch it until you are at the lockscreen.
7.) Boot into download mode again and select PDA and this time select the recovery tar file
8.) Uncheck F. Reset and flash
9.) Once back on the lockscreen go into Recovery and install the CWM-SuperSU-v0.96.zip to root from phone storage.
10.) Get Triangle Away from here and reset counter.

Instructions are in his OP. I have pasted below:
7.) In Odin: Boot into download mode again and select PDA and this time select the recovery tar file (he has attached odin flashable cwm tar in the op)
8.) Uncheck F. Reset and flash
After that you will have CWM. Go to step 9 if you want to root and install SuperSU.
I already updated via Kies and of course now lost my root. If I follow this method (now, after the update) will I get root back or is there another method you guys would recommend? Thanks

You have essentially completed steps 1-5 above using Kies. Go to step 7 (6 is missing) and follow instructions to flash the CWM tar file attached in OP via ODIN and the supersu zip via CWM and you are done.
I was about to follow the video guide found in this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1728824 which shows you how to root and install CWM without tripping the flash counter. Can I follow his installation instructions, but instead use the rooted stock Telus rom linked to in this thread? I assume that if i follow the guide in his thread and use the files he links to, I will end up re-flashing the stock 4.0.1 rom instead of the new 4.0.4, which I want to keep.
Plus I want to have CWM and not trip my flash counter so I dont need to bother with Triangle Away.
This is my first time rooting or flashing anything to my phone, so my apologies for my extreme n00bness. Thanks

If you use the rooted ROM in the other thread you will have that version and not the August LH1 update, remember the ones i linked are full stock firmware. Maybe someone will create a stock rooted flashable odin tar, but you really dont need it. Just flash using the above steps and use Triangle Away. Triangle Away although dangerous does no harm at all, its a simple apk file that installs like any other app, once you confirm it is displaying the correct model (our is I747M) then just hit the reset counter and let it do its thing and then you can uninstall it simple as that.
No point in waiting for someone to create a no trip counter file because that is much hard to do. Plus the only reason I think the first ones where like that was because Triangle Away did not fully support the I747M.

The thread for the no trip method referred to in that video is here. The OP in that thread is still working on root injected versions for the new Canadian firmwares, the ones currently in the OP are the old versions. He can create them quickly, I think he is just waiting for volunteers to mirror the files. Keep checking and when you see a Telus version up ending in LH1, you are good to go.
Thanks OP, that works just fine to reroot my phone and reset the trip counter!
I have a rogers Galaxy SIII if that could help anyone!

A little easier guide to get root?
Hi, I made this easier a little bit. Follow the posted guide from the op
Download your FW and Odin 3.07 (and ofc sammy drivers and what not)
1.) Boot into recovery and create backup, always better to backup
2.) Unzip firmware file and you will see 2 files a dll and md5. The one we need is the md5
Im with bell so mines is -> KIES_HOME_I747MVLALH1_I747MOYCALH1_20120814.100513 _REV04_user_low_ship.tar.md5

4.) Load Odin select PDA and select the firmware file you unzipped in step 2. The MD5 file.
5.) Let the phone do its thing and do not touch it until you are at the lockscreen.
7.) Boot into download mode again and select PDA and this time select the recovery tar file
Click to collapse
Then
8.) click start, wait for you to go back to lockscreen.
9.) Flash the zip attached below (through your CWM) (vol up+ power button+ home button to get to recovery)
[BOOM you have root!]
10.) get triangle away, reset flash counter.
I did not make the zip i just got it from searching around.

2. Let's say install a CWM or similar application, every time I reboot into recovery and install a Mod from .zip file; will it raise my flash counter ?

You can use Mobile odin to flash zip, without flashing CWM
Find CWM recovery from android original dev section like
Chenglu's
Phillz etc
get in tar version and flash with PC odin
Flashing CWM will raise flash counter, if you are counter conscious and want to just flash some zip files for mod, i recommend Mobile odin.

Hi all,
I've just bought a Note II and am trying to get root. I've followed this tutorial carefully
HTML:

and everything completes without error, but whenever I try and boot into recovery it just get a garbled Samsung boot logo and it never gets to recovery.
Now I can't go back to stock updates since my device has been modified, so I'm commited to getting root and custom recovery now.
Can anyone help me with what is going wrong?
Thanks

I can no longer download updates from Samsung since I have tried to root it already.
I can't use Odin since I don't have Windows.
I have tried the method in the link above using Heimdall (Odin equiv. for Linux) and everything went fine (no errors, terminal output was as expected) but cannot get into any recovery (stock or custom)
Before you proceed with tutorial, make sure:
You have installed your Galaxy Note 2 N7100 USB drivers on your PC.
You need to enable USB debugging mode which is deactivated by default.
You smartphone should have 70-80% charge remaining.
Your Galaxy Note 2 N7100 should be factory unlocked.
Backup your important data like Call logs, SMS and other data in stored in phone memory so in case if anything goes wrong, your data is not hurt.
The update is only meant for Galaxy Note 2 N7100, so don’t try it on other variants.
Step 1) Download Android 4.1.2 XXDLK7 for Galaxy Note 2 N7100. " I can't post outside links so type in google galaxy note 2 xxdlk7 "
Step 2) Download ODIN v3.07. It's an old version but you can download a newer version of odin from google but it works np
Step 3) Turn OFF your mobile and go to Download Mode by pressing and holding the Volume Down + Home Buttons together for few seconds followed by Power button until you see Android logo with triangle on screen.
Step 4) Now open ODIN on your PC and connect your Galaxy Note 2 N7100 to your computer.
Step 5) Once your phone is successfully connected to your PC, the ID:COM box on ODIN will turn yellow and will show the COM port number.
Step 6) Select the downloaded file to install by following below steps:
Click on PDA and select file with HOME or CODE in its name.
Now click on Phone and select file with MODEM in its name.
Next click on CSC and select file with CSC in its name.
At last click on PIT and select file with .pit.
Step 7) Again to to ODIN window and check Auto Reboot and F. Reset Time options.
Step 8) Click on Start button in ODIN window to start the installation process. The process will take few minutes to complete.
Step 9) When the installation is completed, your phone will restart. I hope that i helped you GoodLuck

I've only just bought this phone and can't afford to buy another if I brick it, so I'm hesitant to just try without some expert knowledge.

Great! I'll get that to install TWRP or CWM then, since Heimdall seems to be corrupting the recovery when flashing it.
I've got root now (thanks to mario above!) so mobile odin is a good option
Thanks!
It's nice to see that you get rooted, nw download mobile odin and flash twrp.img
Hi all,
I have an ATT Note2 flashed with CleanRom 5.0 and now wanted to go to Jelly Bean 4.3.
I researched a bit and found that SkyNote Vanilla seems to be a good to go ROM.
I looked at the instruction, it seems like I need to flash 4.3param_tz.zip first, is that correct? Do I have to flash it with odin?
Can I flash to SkyNote Vanilla from CWM (just the same as I flash cleanrom before) after the above step? I am currently on CWM 6.0.1.4.
Thanks~

Yep. Everything is in the instructions. The answers to both questions are yes.
HOW TO INSTALL
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
To Install: Att
-Are you coming from a 4.1.2 rom and haven't done the 4.3 one click? See A
-If your on 4.3 (one click or odin method or received the 4.3 Ota) just Flash as normal--or See B
To Install : All Other Carriers and Models (see all other carriers below b)
A
This method ensures working wifi (ATT ONLY)
Allows backup and restore of roms
and going back and forth btw 4.1 and 4.3
(Your version of CWM will work
Try Different recoveries . Also some versions of TWRP have been known to have restore issues
Remember to remove all spaces from the backup name

-Then unzip so you have just a tar
-open up odin .. place your phone in download mode (vol down+home+power)
and stick tar file in the pda slot and flash
Hold off on this until you get ROM booted. If WiFi does not work then try devils kernel
-Or Try Devils Latest Kernel
(prevents you from having to use odin for wifi)
-but may cause lag issues or weirdness all around for ATT
ALL Devil Kernels

Concerning flashing the two files, param & tz.zip... yes you need Odin to flash those. And that is so you'll have Wi-Fi working with stock kernel!!
If you just want to flash it without doing anything! Then you'll need the devil kernel for Wi-Fi to function correctly!!
And yes you can use CWM recovery to flash Rom! After you perform the Odin flash of those 2 files above^^. I've heard people having slight problems with TWRP!
Being it would say no OS installed!
Then all you'll have to do is re-flash the Rom right on top of the first flash, no wiping of anything!!!
That's what I had to do fyi...
Working excellent with zero issues!!
I personally prefer TWRP recovery!

So just wanan make sure I understand the steps correctly:
1) Currently with cleanrom, flash 4.3param_tz.tar using ODIN
2) Make sure wifi is still working with current rom which 4.1.2
3) Flash with skynote
Am I right?

It works great although I hit couple of problems.
1) long wait at the Upgrading media database, I gave up on waiting and took out battery to restart the phone
2) I also found that if I did not wipe data out first, the phone will run super slow, after wiping and restarting phone is great.
Thanks for your help!

Hmm....it looks like Xposed no longer works with this update. This is the error when you try to install it:

Update: The Xposed_v2.6.1_by_SolarWarez_20151129.apk variant works with this release! Search for it on Google if the stock versions wouldn't run on your phone!

Use the old Xposed Installer v2.6.1 with TW 4.4.4, and you can directly install the xposed framework within the app.
Just a heads-up for anyone having trouble flashing any of these. I tried several times and re-downloaded the modem and the full firmware. They failed multiple times in multiple versions of odin(for me). I gave up on the modem but kept working on the full and it finally took but I was stuck at t-mo boot screen more than once and it wouldn't fully boot. Finally I flashed the newest twrp before taking any other measures and it finally booted.

In case it gets stuck at T-Mobile boot screen after successful firmware flash, just hold the power button till your device turns off,
Then go into stock recovery by using power+home+volume up button and do a factory reset.
It should boot fine.

Thanks for the reply. I forgot to list that I did that also. For me at least this S4 was very stubborn to take on this flash. I was mostly posting so if anyone else ran into this so they wouldn't panic. All is well now though. It came around eventually.:good:
I searched this out because I'm looking for a Stagefright fix for the S4 (my wife's phone). It looks like the other ROMs were last updated prior to Stagefright, so I expect they are not fixed. However, I'm OK with stock as long as it is rooted.
Are there any issues with rooting? I read in this article that T-Mobile put a SetUID restriction on the kernel and the normal process for TWRP and SuperSU doesn't work.
The author was writing about the UVUAMDL firmware, and offers a link to download a patched MDL kernel with the restriction removed.
Since this thread is about the UVUFOK3 (a later version), it seems likely that the SetUID restriction still exists. However the article also says "MAKE SURE YOU ARE ON UVUAMDL build OTHERWISE THIS KERNEL WILL BREAK THINGS IN YOUR PHONE!" So does that mean "UVUAMDL only - nothing newer or later" or "UVUAMDL or later"? No way to know since the article has not been updated since UVUAMDL.
Has any one successfully rooted the S4 after installing this firmware? (M919UVUFOK3_M919TMBFOK3_TMB)
Is the kernel provided in M919UVUFOK3_Stock_Kernel.zip already "fixed" to remove the root restriction?

Nothing is modified as it is a stock package, stock kernel is only required if you flash some custom kernel and wanted to go back to stock by just installing the kernel instead of full ODIN.
This is what I always use to root:
1) Install latest TWRP via ODIN
2) Boot into recovery
3) Flash latest SuperSU zip using TWRP.

So it should be a fairly straightforward process? The issues technut experienced are unusual? Has anyone else installed and rooted using this ROM? Please report on how it went.

a103, when you say "flashed a custom ROM", do you mean a different ROM than the one in the OP of this thread? (since this one isn't really custom) If a different ROM, which did you flash? I didn't find many options that contained the OK3 firmware.

The phone currently is running Wicked V8 custom ROM, so I think I need to flash everything. What are the steps for updating all three; firmware, kernel, and modem? Is there a particular order to flash them in Odin?
I read in another place that the firmware contains the Modem so I wouldn't need to flash the modem in addition to the full firmware (M919UVUFOK3_M919TMBFOK3_TMB.zip). Is that true in this case? Does it include both modem and kernel?
Edit - After searching out how to open tar.md5 files I can now see that the full firmware does include the kernel and modem files. So installing that one should sufficient to update everything.

a103, did you have any of the problems reported by technut above? Was it a smooth process of flashing?
Here's what I think has been said:
0) Before starting - copy UPDATE-SuperSU-v2.46.zip, Titanium Backup APK, and Titanium Backup data onto ExtSD card.
1) start phone into download mode, Use ODIN to flash M919UVUFOK3_M919TMBFOK3_M919UVUFOK3_HOME.tar.md5
2) restart into stock, let it stabilize.
If any problems or stuck on Tmo screen, restart into stock recovery and do factory reset
3) once booted into stock FW, power off.
4) restart into download mode, use Odin to flash openrecovery-twrp-2.6.0.0-jfltetmo.tar
5) boot into TWRP
6) install UPDATE-SuperSU-v2.46.zip
7) reboot into Android - phone is now rooted again and ready to go.
8) restore user apps (not system apps or data) from TiBu, restore TiBu XML data for SMS and call logs, etc.
