Hi all,
I have an ATT Note2 flashed with CleanRom 5.0 and now wanted to go to Jelly Bean 4.3.
I researched a bit and found that SkyNote Vanilla seems to be a good to go ROM.
I looked at the instruction, it seems like I need to flash 4.3param_tz.zip first, is that correct? Do I have to flash it with odin?
Can I flash to SkyNote Vanilla from CWM (just the same as I flash cleanrom before) after the above step? I am currently on CWM 6.0.1.4.
Thanks~

Yep. Everything is in the instructions. The answers to both questions are yes.
HOW TO INSTALL
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
To Install: Att
-Are you coming from a 4.1.2 rom and haven't done the 4.3 one click? See A
-If your on 4.3 (one click or odin method or received the 4.3 Ota) just Flash as normal--or See B
To Install : All Other Carriers and Models (see all other carriers below b)
A
This method ensures working wifi (ATT ONLY)
Allows backup and restore of roms
and going back and forth btw 4.1 and 4.3
(Your version of CWM will work
Try Different recoveries . Also some versions of TWRP have been known to have restore issues
Remember to remove all spaces from the backup name

-Then unzip so you have just a tar
-open up odin .. place your phone in download mode (vol down+home+power)
and stick tar file in the pda slot and flash
Hold off on this until you get ROM booted. If WiFi does not work then try devils kernel
-Or Try Devils Latest Kernel
(prevents you from having to use odin for wifi)
-but may cause lag issues or weirdness all around for ATT
ALL Devil Kernels

Concerning flashing the two files, param & tz.zip... yes you need Odin to flash those. And that is so you'll have Wi-Fi working with stock kernel!!
If you just want to flash it without doing anything! Then you'll need the devil kernel for Wi-Fi to function correctly!!
And yes you can use CWM recovery to flash Rom! After you perform the Odin flash of those 2 files above^^. I've heard people having slight problems with TWRP!
Being it would say no OS installed!
Then all you'll have to do is re-flash the Rom right on top of the first flash, no wiping of anything!!!
That's what I had to do fyi...
Working excellent with zero issues!!
I personally prefer TWRP recovery!

So just wanan make sure I understand the steps correctly:
1) Currently with cleanrom, flash 4.3param_tz.tar using ODIN
2) Make sure wifi is still working with current rom which 4.1.2
3) Flash with skynote
Am I right?

It works great although I hit couple of problems.
1) long wait at the Upgrading media database, I gave up on waiting and took out battery to restart the phone
2) I also found that if I did not wipe data out first, the phone will run super slow, after wiping and restarting phone is great.
Thanks for your help!

I've been reading these forums in my spare time for the last week or so but I'm still a bit confused or just overlooking something. According to the CM 10.1 thread install instructions are
Install instructions:
1. Install ClockworkMod Recovery for "I927". Sorry, CM cannot provide support for other recoveries, although they may work fine.
3. Reboot into recovery and install

and a few people in some of the guide threads have basically stated the same. Is it really this simple now or do I still need to follow the guide from a year ago or the one in this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1962633 ?
So far all I have done is install CWMR Touch 6.0.1.2 Recovery and run backup in both blob and tar formats. Actually does this even work properly without rooting first?
You don't need root, but you can't quite go straight either. The current SOP is:
Flash TW-ICS, meaning UCLG9 or UCLH2 or UCLJ3, using the respective OneClick
Flash CWMR using Odin (the previous step overwrites recovery so you will have to do this again even if you flashed CWM previously)
Boot into CWM
Flash your AOSP-JB ROM of choice
Flash the correct gapps for your ROM
Format /data (aka factory reset)
Reboot into ROM and enjoy
Step 1 may or may not be necessary -- nobody's tried going from TW-GB straight to AOSP-JB yet. If you're feeling adventurous, try it and let us know how it goes.
Once you've flashed a TW-ICS once, you won't need to do it again -- at that point flashing a new TW-ICS or AOSP-JB ROM is as simple as flash-format-boot.
Thanks for the updated info, I didn't think it would be that simple.
Not sure what TW stands for since I haven't seen that abbreviation yet.
But basically for step one I can grab the UCLG9 from this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1841502
and flash it with CWM and then follow on from step 2? Or would I be better off grabbing the newer UCLJ3 from SamMobile and using Odin?

Nope no zips or Odin just use one click the first time. So for step 1 above follow this http://www.theandroidsoul.com/android-4-0-4-ice-cream-sandwich-update-for-att-captivate-glide-i927uclg9/. Can't get easier then this.

I would get the full EXE, just to be sure. The CWM zips generally don't include bootloader or baseband and that's the important stuff.

I used the CWM flash and can confirm the no updated baseband since it still had the stock Rogers one on AT&T-ICS and in CM-10.1. Not sure about ICS but in CM-10.1 I could get voice but no data and haven't tested txt.
Going to flash back to stock with the backup I made for now while I research solutions to a few personal gripes I have with CM-10.1.
And would the UCLJ3 from SamMobile with odin or kies be as effective as the EXE version since I already have it downloaded?
Thanks for helping a total noob and to be honest this is my first Android phone.

I just took a peek... ooh. Looks like pretty much everything is in there. You should be good.
Warning: This will update your bootloader, so proceed at your own risk!
Flashing the update will wipe all data, as in factory reset wipe, as in everything is gone. Poof!
You must update to 4.1.2 before updating to 4.3.
You can not downgrade to 4.1.2 after installing the 4.3 update. Any attempts to do so will brick your device.
Go Here For Rooting Instructions
Instructions
1) Backup your files to your PC.
2) Odin back to stock 4.1.1 (DLK3).
3) Download update zips for BOTH 4.1.2 and 4.3, and check MD5 for both.
4) Create two folders on your external sd card named 412 and 43, and put the 4.1.2 and 4.3 updatexxx.zip in the respective folders.
5) Plug phone in to AC charger (4.3 update takes a while).
6) Reboot recovery, install the 4.1.2 update from sd card, flash (update installs and phone reboots).
7) Reboot recovery, install the 4.3 update from sd card, flash (update installs and phone reboots).
8) Enjoy 4.3!
Edit:
The 4.1.2 OTA can apparently be flashed with Mobile Odin.

Correct. Root is holding fine after CF Auto-Root. And I installed both TWRP and CWM, both of which are working fine.
Just curious my friend when you say rename zip do you mean rename this 2400258.zip to update.zip and then flash it then use odin to to install CF Auto-Root?

update: but worth it, runs much smoother, and some games like Jewels Deluxe, which is easily the best Jewels out there now work again
Strange, but I was on stock 4.1.1 with root and clockwork. Did the OTA, when installing the phone reboots into CW recovery. Asks if I want to install untrusted zip. Choose yes ands CW installed the update. Then warns that I could lose root....fix? Chose yes and CW kept my root. Did this work do anyone else?

Should have a flashable zip of this by tomorrow evening. I've been tackling this thing all night, (5 a.m. here) and I have successfully dumped everything I need and am working on setting it up in the kitchen. I've pulled the modem but I'm too afraid to test at the moment. It's 60 MB, yet all of the other modems are ~40 MB. Getting pretty exhausted so I'll have to take a break soon.

Installation:
You can install the new Bootloader IF YOU WANT. IT'S OPTIONAL. - Thank you -Mr. X-
If you decide to install it, please be aware that you will NOT be able to downgrade to 4.1.x bootloader. If you need to know if a file is safe to flash please refer to post #3 by @loserskater
Backup your data
Factory reset (Highly recommended)
Flash zip of your choice via recovery
Install new modem MK5 (if you haven't all ready)
Install this Kernel (only if you are having Wifi and Data issues. Will be sorted out, this kernel is a temporary fix) Thanks @scotteb
Clear cache
Reboot (First boot takes 4-5mins)
Enjoy
Concerning bloat, i think it's a personal decision. XDA member Kaito95 made a nice script which is editable here if you wish to remove bloat yourself.
Thanks to Kaito95 for KNOX removal and debloater script, dsixda for his Android Kitchen and -Mr. X- for Bootloader.

I feel like there's a lot of confusion about the new bootloaders. So let me try to clear some of it up.
You CAN flash 4.1.2 roms but NOT 4.1.x bootloaders.
If you're unsure that a rom contains bootloaders or a modem here's how to check, download the rom and look in the zip file. What you should look for are any of the following files:
Code:
aboot.mbn
sbl1.mbn
sbl2.mbn
sbl3.mbn
rpm.mbn
tz.mbn
NON-HLOS.bin
modem.bin
If the zip contains any of those files DO NOT flash it.
If it contains just these:
Code:
boot.img
system
META-INF
(There may be other folders if the rom uses aroma)
it is OK to flash.

I tried the same file as above and wifi wouldn't turn on during the intro startup.
Also. On 1st boot it said my external sd card was corrupted. I rebooted and when I went to mount the SD card it said it was blank.
I rebooted into recovery and my external sd card was fine and all my files were present.
So I refreshed my 4.4 quantum rest 2 build and will run again if another version is posted.
Lastly, I did bot upgrade my bootloader. I'm still on the 4.1.2 bootloader.
Thanks

I used the Telus version and had no wifi until I flashed the kernel
kriEv, I had gallery force closes on the Bell version, switched to Telus just to see if the problem still exists. The result was, no force closes on the gallery and wifi was working fine, but i never had wifi problems on either build. The only thing I had to do was to set SElinux enforcing, to permissive. No other problems thus far.
Wi-Fi also not working, data not working either (Bell version)

May be some sort of issue with the upload Bell version, or the modem file itself may be corrupted.

I'll try the kernel a few posts ahead as well. Both my data and my wifi would not work after installing the Bell version rooted with KNOX and updating the modem supplied.
May be some sort of issue with the upload Bell version, or the modem file itself may be corrupted.
Many thanks for putting these up though!:good:

download the telus version and flash that, I am guessing your with bell as you stated you were using the bell version. I am currently using the one I said as there is no customization by the carrier. I did have to add the APN to get data (just so you know) You can also use the kernel that is included if you have no other problems, you may also have to switch SElinux to permissive depending on your root requirements. Or, flash the other kernel in my previous post and save the trouble.
I flashed the MK3 modem, then MOAR v9.0.1 and lost my 3G data.
There are other threads here discussing similar problems.
Some said that the person lost their APN and suggested typing *#06#. I did that and got my MEID (it was not all zeroes).
Every time I type ##72786# now, i get the "SCRTN" screen and it reboots all by itself.
It rebooted, and when it came up again, it started going through the activation process. During Hands-free activation, I get the "4G" icon. Ditto for when it updates the PRL, but the icon disappears when it says it needs to reboot (and it never comes back...)
When I type ##786#, I can view RTN information.
When it comes back up, still no data. What am I missing?
I called Sprint to have them do a "data refresh" or "re-provision". Still no data. I'm stuck. Please help.
Have you tried flashing the mk5 modem? Or updating the prl?

Updating the PRL fails.
The only thread I see with an MK5 modem is for Virgin Mobile/Boost here. I can't use that if I'm on Sprint, right?
Isn't there something about zeroing out your MSL/MEID and rebooting?

Ok. I missed that in the thread. I have to wait until I get home to try it. Thanks.
Ok, when I restored my Nandroid backup, it apparently killed my TWRP. If i installed that *after* my last backup, that would explain it?
I need to start from scratch. Do I need to be at my home computer to do that?
What do you mean by start from scratch?

Just to be safe I would Odin back to stock, choose which recovery you want, I personally prefer philz latest because it let's you root your phone via the recovery. Then reflash the ROM of choice.

Thanks.I"m looking for the link for the stock ROM now.
Is this the right thread?

Edit: I also have the "SAMSUNG GALAXY S3 UNIFIED TOOLKIT V8.0". Do I want to use that instead? Or before Odin?
Can you point me to a simple walkthrough to do this? Hopefully with links to downloads, etc.?

I have the Sprint drivers installed and Odin already from the last time I messed with this phone. I just can't find the stock ROM, then I think I might be good to go...?
Edit: I found a stock rooted de-odexed 4.3 MK3 here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2541900
But I don't know... do I use Odin to flash it? Do I need to re-flash a custom recovery?

ok i got it now! lol use this file through odin to take your phone back to stockhttp://www.mediafire.com/download/tch0i9oiuv84q61 once that is done flash this recovery through odinhttps://www.dropbox.com/s/gh6gcxw9fyvgjuf/philz_touch_6.25.0-d2lte.tar.md5 once all of that is done boot into recovery and go into philz settings and root the phone. once that is done go into the play store and download supersu. once downloaded go into it and update the binaries. it will also ask you to disable knox, do so using the "normal" method. i hope this was a good enough walk through.

I *still* don't have 3G data, though. Check your PM, please.
Well here is instructions to unroot and then root......keep philz recovery...folllow these...then follow directions after....
how to return to stock
http://qbking77.com/how-to-unroot/unroot-unbrick-the-samsung-galaxy-s-iii/
how to root
http://qbking77.com/samsung-galaxy-s-iii-2/root-samsung-galaxy-s3-android-4-3-jelly-bean/
You have made it back and hopefully rooted once again....go into recovery and flash the philz recovery....do not restart after flashing.....you can go to advanced menu and should be option to reboot to recovery.....once back in philz recovery now.....go to wipe data/factory reset...in this menu choose clean to install a new rom.....then flash any rom.......and gapps if required...some roms need gapps others have it included....read flashing instructions on any rom you are on....
Hope this helps
stock you can do the ##72786# it helped me then i had same issues you had....philz recovery saved the day.....
there are lots you can do with your phone...so....make sure to read and research...and follow all developers instructions.....happy rooting
I got back to MOAR 9.0.1 and sometimes have 1x data, but mostly I don't have any data when not on WiFi. I'm really stuck. Any ideas?

Use the old Xposed Installer v2.6.1 with TW 4.4.4, and you can directly install the xposed framework within the app.
Just a heads-up for anyone having trouble flashing any of these. I tried several times and re-downloaded the modem and the full firmware. They failed multiple times in multiple versions of odin(for me). I gave up on the modem but kept working on the full and it finally took but I was stuck at t-mo boot screen more than once and it wouldn't fully boot. Finally I flashed the newest twrp before taking any other measures and it finally booted.

In case it gets stuck at T-Mobile boot screen after successful firmware flash, just hold the power button till your device turns off,
Then go into stock recovery by using power+home+volume up button and do a factory reset.
It should boot fine.

Thanks for the reply. I forgot to list that I did that also. For me at least this S4 was very stubborn to take on this flash. I was mostly posting so if anyone else ran into this so they wouldn't panic. All is well now though. It came around eventually.:good:
I searched this out because I'm looking for a Stagefright fix for the S4 (my wife's phone). It looks like the other ROMs were last updated prior to Stagefright, so I expect they are not fixed. However, I'm OK with stock as long as it is rooted.
Are there any issues with rooting? I read in this article that T-Mobile put a SetUID restriction on the kernel and the normal process for TWRP and SuperSU doesn't work.
The author was writing about the UVUAMDL firmware, and offers a link to download a patched MDL kernel with the restriction removed.
Since this thread is about the UVUFOK3 (a later version), it seems likely that the SetUID restriction still exists. However the article also says "MAKE SURE YOU ARE ON UVUAMDL build OTHERWISE THIS KERNEL WILL BREAK THINGS IN YOUR PHONE!" So does that mean "UVUAMDL only - nothing newer or later" or "UVUAMDL or later"? No way to know since the article has not been updated since UVUAMDL.
Has any one successfully rooted the S4 after installing this firmware? (M919UVUFOK3_M919TMBFOK3_TMB)
Is the kernel provided in M919UVUFOK3_Stock_Kernel.zip already "fixed" to remove the root restriction?

Nothing is modified as it is a stock package, stock kernel is only required if you flash some custom kernel and wanted to go back to stock by just installing the kernel instead of full ODIN.
This is what I always use to root:
1) Install latest TWRP via ODIN
2) Boot into recovery
3) Flash latest SuperSU zip using TWRP.

a103, when you say "flashed a custom ROM", do you mean a different ROM than the one in the OP of this thread? (since this one isn't really custom) If a different ROM, which did you flash? I didn't find many options that contained the OK3 firmware.

The phone currently is running Wicked V8 custom ROM, so I think I need to flash everything. What are the steps for updating all three; firmware, kernel, and modem? Is there a particular order to flash them in Odin?
I read in another place that the firmware contains the Modem so I wouldn't need to flash the modem in addition to the full firmware (M919UVUFOK3_M919TMBFOK3_TMB.zip). Is that true in this case? Does it include both modem and kernel?
Edit - After searching out how to open tar.md5 files I can now see that the full firmware does include the kernel and modem files. So installing that one should sufficient to update everything.

a103, did you have any of the problems reported by technut above? Was it a smooth process of flashing?
Here's what I think has been said:
0) Before starting - copy UPDATE-SuperSU-v2.46.zip, Titanium Backup APK, and Titanium Backup data onto ExtSD card.
1) start phone into download mode, Use ODIN to flash M919UVUFOK3_M919TMBFOK3_M919UVUFOK3_HOME.tar.md5
2) restart into stock, let it stabilize.
If any problems or stuck on Tmo screen, restart into stock recovery and do factory reset
3) once booted into stock FW, power off.
4) restart into download mode, use Odin to flash openrecovery-twrp-2.6.0.0-jfltetmo.tar
5) boot into TWRP
6) install UPDATE-SuperSU-v2.46.zip
7) reboot into Android - phone is now rooted again and ready to go.
8) restore user apps (not system apps or data) from TiBu, restore TiBu XML data for SMS and call logs, etc.
