I have a few pictures of my galaxy nexus broken down if anyone would like to ask me questions on how and where things go they can. I actually find this phone to be very easy to get apart and if careful can be reassembled in 15 minutes. I was actually replacing my speaker with some old parts I bought off a guy. No more crackling! Anyways in the process grabbed some pics
U can see the first three are the screen bottom speaker, main board, vibe, etc. The last pic she's all back together

Somehow I imagined a picture of me tearing down a smartphone where I was photoshopped out and replaced with a picture of a dog in a labcoat saying: "I have no idea what I'm doing"
Yep this phone is one of the easiest ive worked with. had to open mine to replace the earpiece. the only thing to take care of is the volume ribbon and vibrator wires, they can snap off really easily.

Yes sir....I just stuck a razor blade between them and the housing and they come right off connected to a gel like glue. This was good because sticking them back in place they actually stayed. U also have to remove the vibrator motor and the long black wire running down alongside the battery compartment (it has connectors on each end) then of course your two ribbon connectors for main board then one ribbon connector for bottom speaker. Didn't touch cams no need to.....very very easy job in fact it was to easy.
I have to replace my USB board (my USB port was damaged) and I am a newbie doing this kind of service myself. I bought it on ebay:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/OEM-Charger...ltDomain_0&hash=item35bc2f9280#ht_3392wt_1052
Do you think it is possible for someone with no experience to make it? I think I will try it myself, not in the mood to send it to some repair shop and wait 30 days..

Yes for sure...but if u do not feel safe doing it then take it in. I know to get to the usb the whole speaker and housing comes off of the top of that. Which is one screw then a ribbon fairly easy....then u just work something thin in between that and housing like a guitar pic or Mac card. I would go with guitar pic tho so u don't mess the corners of your card up. I know that once the speaker portion is off u see in my first pic the USB I think has its on board. I truthfully did not take that portion of it out thought it was kind of pointless. If u need help I will assist u if u decide to do it yourself

Thats pretty neat man, do you know where the GPS chip is?
I replaced my back cover and apparently I damaged the GPS chip cause I have NO gps lock, software side its ruled out (I flashed many diff ROMS, kernels and Radios and it used to work well before I opened up my Gnex)
Thank you.
where is the VZ LTE radio? maybe i can swap mine out for one that doesnt cause signal drops.

The battery cover? Hmmmm. I am pretty sure the GPS chip is on the opposite side of motherboard. Looking at ifixit photos it says right by rear camera on the opposite side of motherboard.
Edit...also if u look at first pic in my pictures look on right side of battery compartment . See the black wire with the connectors on each end? I wonder if the connector closest to bottom came loose or has something to do with it

Not sure I have GSM model. And dude good luck with that unless u know how to solder chips on to motherboards that is nearly impossible and I think swapping a lte chip for another lte chip won't solve your problem

Thanks, appreciate your time.
I checked out ifixit, thinking that in the process of removing the cover I could of hit the GPS chip or something, but since you pointed out that its on the opposite side of the motherboard that's not a possibility. Since I have not removed the mother board.
I have not opened it again, afraid of ruining something else.
But I guess I will have to in order to check the wire you speak about.

I sent my phone in for repair to Samsung via Expansys for a bad external speaker. Back when it went bad, phone was too new to have all parts available as spares on the net plus the phone was still under warranty so I send it back to Samsung via Expansys-usa. But what I think happened is that Expansys didn't send it to Samsung and repaired it inhouse. I can say that because all screws inside the phone had chewed up heads and the repair didn't look good however the external speaker was working. First thing I found out that external volume rocker was not working anymore. So I send it back again to Expansys and I just received it back today with a note saying that the volume rocker ribbon pins have come away from the main board and taken the pin with them.
Bottom line is that they didn't repair the phone. Any ideas on how I can get this fixed? Do I have to change the ribbon? if I want to do it myself or this sort of damage requires a new board?
Any ideas comments are appreciated.
Edit: Link to photo showing the pins that are separated from the board

Hi Sarni,
I accidentally snapped the ribbon (refer to attached pic, circled in red), and now my speaker is not working anymore. I guess that ribbon was for connecting the speaker and headphone jack? . What do you think i should do now, replace the whole piece?
I also intend to replace my damaged charge port, but not sure how to proceed for that.
Thanks,
Dennis
I noticed today that my headphones / car stereo etc is only playing out of the left speaker unless I jiggle it. At first I assumed it was a wire going so I tried 5 different aux cables and 2 different headphones, it's all the same deal.. have to look for that sweet spot to make it play in both speakers.
I bought this launch day and I am pretty shocked the 3.5mm is going already, I've already tried cleaning it with dust off (air can) and it's still the same. What does sprint generally do to fix this? I have insurance, but I really hate getting a refurbished phone back... had bad luck with them in the past! Let me know if you guys know anything else I can try to repair it myself or if its a lost cause and just let sprint replace it.
thanks!

Honestly...I would just let sprint fix it. I don't think they would send you a totally new phone, but instead ask you to take it to a repair center. I have had that problem before but with a few cheap aux cables I had. I always tried a fresh new one and it worked fine...maybe all of your cables are going bad haha you never know!

yup its just from plugging it in and out too much over the past month, they replaced the jack free of charge in 20 minutes, works great again thanks
When I got my GS3, the same thing happened to me. I was about to unroot and call Sprint for a new phone... The I saw a thread with someone else with the same problem.
Turned out that what was wrong was that I just hadn't pushed the jack in far enough. Sounds to ridiculous to be true... But try it. Push your headphone plug in nice and firm until you hear a resounding "click".
I felt dumb, but saved me the grief of returning.

yeah I thought that at first, it wasnt that. a pin inside the jack somehow became loose enough to not make contact with the plug. the guy showed me after he fixed it.

Hey guys, I'm back while I don't have my iPhone. Now I'm trying to get this damn phone to work again. R800x if you didn't remember. Now, every time I get a new digitizer, It doesn't work. I take the old one off and put the new one in, making sure all contacts in the ribbon are connected to the flex cable connecting to the logic board. Any suggestions to get this damn screen to work again?
Or if anyone has a working, but broken digitizer they replaced, I'll take it

It may be the flex cable, the little cable which connects to the digitizer is part of the flex cable i believe.

Except the front camera works (green and fuzzy with no quality what so ever, but works). That's why I don't think it's the flex.

I bought this phone used and didn't find out until later that the headphone jack plays distorted music.
Here's an example. Everything else with the phone is fine. In this video I taped the headphones to the mics on my laptop.
[edit] crap, i'm a noob and can't post my youtube vid. This is the title of it if you want to hear an example:
Samsung Galaxy Note 2. Distorted audio via headphone jack.
Here's what I've done so far to try and solve it.
1. tried 5 different sets of headphones.
2. made sure they were properly seated in the jack.
3. cleaned out the jack for possible debris.
4. disassembled phone and replaced jack with a new part.
5. disassembled phone and cleaned the motherboard and all connections with Electronic cleaner and a toothbrush.
6. Reset phone
7. tried several different music players.
8. turned off WiFi, BT, put phone in Airplane mode.
9. altered all the sound settings I could find, surround, balance, boost, etc.
The water mark on the battery shows it got wet.
The water mark on the frame and speaker is missing.
The water mark on the motherboard is dry.
Also, I've used the iPhone for the last 5 years, so Android is new to me. BTW, except for this, I love the phone. I have thought this was a hardware problem, but before I give up I'd like to make sure this is not a software issue.
I finally resorted to the Reset, and I'm dealing with that right now. I also ordered a BT adapter so I can re-route everything through that. So I can play music in my truck.
Any advice or idea of where to go now would be welcome.
Thanks,
Kevin
I think the water indicator is your best clue that it's a hardware issue. I dunno how to test to isolate the component so you can try to fix it yourself though.
Out of curiosity, did the seller dispose that it was water damaged?

No, he did not disclose that it was water damaged. He also said that the headphones worked perfectly the last time he used it.
I find it funny that one of the screws was missing and the watermark was missing. Obviously someone had been in there and tried to fix it?
It doesn't matter, because I bought the phone and he's not going to take it back. Caveat Emptor. I didn't buy it at Best Buy, I bought it from some dude on Craigslist. I just got a $23 iKross device that will do both music and phone via a bluetooth adapter. I'm going to give up fighting it.
I thought I was going to be in the clear swapping out the headphone jack for $9. It was kind of fun taking apart the phone and checking out all the parts of it. This was kind of a forbidden activity with my iPhones, so it was interesting.
Thanks for your help, and Happy 4th of July!
-Kevin
Wow, that is quite impressive work....You deserve to have it work after you did all that.
It does sound like a hardware issue, but just out of curiosity, have you tried a different ROM?
Also if you have att, you could possibly do an insurance claim if it comes down to it.
I have the same prob. I took it to the Samsung repair center the guy quickly opened it , cleaned the audio jack... dint work, replaced the audio jack.. didnt work...
He mentioned sometimes connecting the jack to some other output devices like some amplifier or some sound system may have damaged the component/IC/Diode/resister/or whatever is responsible as the place where im am.. they have poor electrical earthing as the electricity standards are very poor and may have short circuited / excess electric current reached the phone and spoilt it
The solution >> Get a new motherboard !!! according to the Samsung engineer..if anyone has found a solution please share ! apart from changing a costly motherboard !

tighten all the screws!!
I had the same problem, i tried everything. Wiping, different rom, viper audio drivers...
Then i read in a comment on youtube to tighten the screws (especially the one between the camera en the led). Everything works now!
here another solution I found. I know this is a year old thread but it might help other people
I tried testing the earphone jack while the back housing is removed and while trying to figure out what causing it I found out that the ribbon is losing the connection to motherboard so I added another layer to the top of the ribbon connector to keep it in place and the sound distortion never happened again.

I have same problem and i reset my phone and problem is finish thanks to tell:good:
Yeah me too. Thats what I do. So annoying
I am facing headphone jack issues of late with my Note 2. I have tried many headphones and earphones in my Note 2 and only the left audio works. If I wriggle around the audio jack and if I put the wire in a certain position, then the right audio comes and again stops even if the wire moves slightly. Its very annoying that I have to adjust the cable all the time. It is most likely a hardware problem with the jack. Should I give it in the service center or is there anything that I can do ? I am rooted and using a custom ROM. Will they repair it under warranty, if I flash back to stock ROM and reset the counter ?
Thanks
I had this problem with my mp3 player. It's very frustrating.
This picture is from a mp3 player, but it's the same in our phones. I think something is broken inside the yellow cirkle.
I have the exact same problem. Its a shame bcuz Note 2 has been the best phone Ive ever hsd.
Try cleaning out the port with a Q Tip and compressed air. No liquids if it continues then I would have services. Before sending it in have the stock firmware with kernel and recovery. And test it after that before sending it in.

Mine is doing this too, but only with certain cables plugged in. Those with a wider flat plug have the issue, where those with a smaller rounded plug do not. I am attempting to just get a cable for my headphones that have a smaller rounded plug, instead of getting the phone fixed, since it works with some. I think it is more an issue with not being able to push the plug entirely flush as the phone is curved, than with a defect in the contacts (though nothing would suprise me).
I've just sent my note 2 to Samsung (via Vodafone) to have the headphone socket fixed.
They refused because it was rooted It was still on stock Vodafone firmware and I forgot to unroot it lol

Note 2 Headphone jack fix for me
I too had this same issue. I have figured it out. I could not get the headphone jack to work, cleaned it and everything. I thought my phone was done. Then I was changing out my sd card I noticed a screw loose. The one right between the camera and the flash. I tightened it up and sure enough the headphone jack works now!! Not sure if this will fix all of your issues but just thought I would throw that out there.
Mine eventually went out completely, so i ordered a new one on eBay for $6 US. It literally took 5 minutes to fix.

Sorry for the thread hijack and thanks for the reply
I am in the UK and Vodafone were adamant that they (or Samsung?) wouldn't fix it because it was rooted. He then agreed with me that rooting my phone would in 'no way break the headphone socket' lol, still wouldn't repair it though
Do you have a link or anything that says EU phones must be fixed if they are rooted? I'm going to send Samsung a snotty email and it would be useful.

One of many authoritative sources: http://matija.suklje.name/rooting-and-flashing-your-device-does-not-void-the-warranty-in-eu
It boils down to that the repair centre has to maintain warranty as long as they cannot prove that rooting is the direct cause to whatever problem you have.

Exactly this. I was going to have to unroot , until I saw this. There is also another little screw to the right of the jack when looking at the back of the phone with the cover off. Check this one too. They were both loose on mine.
LOL I had a flat bladed jeweller's screwdriver I had pocketed at home for no reason. Saw this at the office, and VOILA. Fixed. Fate.
/edit
This also seems to have cured the hissing audio problem when using the audio while charging with a USB, which according to Samsung "is normal".
headphone jack issues.
II bought my note 2 used. The headphone jack was broken when I bought it. I've had the jack replaced twice in the past month. It keeps going out. The sound turns to static but if I move the plug, it will work a little while. Is this a note 2 defect or did I just buy a bad phone?

I got this issue just few weeks ago. I purchased a replacement audio jack, and installed it today. Not working. Then I tightened the screws a bit, and it worked! For a good ten seconds... and the issue remains.
Does anyone know the inner workings on this device? It seems to be a connecting issue. I tried adding some pressure around the audio jack area on top of the plastic cover, but it didn't help... The phone works just fine otherwise, and I happened to notice that the original headset volume rocker and microphone works but I can't hear anything!
i have this problem. nothing works
Having an interesting/annoying time with my n7105.
Dropped it one too many times, and the headhphones audio turned into a static hissing mess!
I found that by just smaching the phone against my knee or something solid, the audio would return for about an hour.
It got worse and worse and eventually I decided to fix it. I purchased a replacement audio receiver jack and installed it, but the problem still remains, so I'm unsure where the actual issue is occurring.
I found that by tightening a screw just below the audio jack, that it fixed the problem. I have to tension it just right... Too tight and the issue returns.
I think the issue must be with the connector on the motherboard, where the ribbon cable connects. I say this because the screw I'm tensioning to fix the issue sits pretty close to this, and would be pressuring this down and around.
So I'm not sure how I'd fix this without replacing the entire motherboard.
I'll crack it open again soon and have another dig at it.

I've been doing a bit more research and found that someone may have already done the work for me.
I'll attempt this and report back with the result.

After my earlier rant I opened my phone and have managed to fixed my knee smacking problem. The problem was a bad ground between the screen and motherboard. I have added a picture of the two metal surfaces I cleaned (circled in yellow) to get the good connection back. These are not pics of my phone because it was apart obviously but it is the same phone. My sound is 100% crystal clear I believe the problem comes with dropping the phone and the connection going bad due to lack of enough screws in the area of the connection. I also ran the screw directly into the motherboard instead of through the plastic backing in the same area I circled. Stop smacking you're phones!!

Well I attempted half of this. I opened the phone up again and cleaned up the connections with some 100% Isopropyl rubbing alcohol (they had a bit of gunk on them).
Started putting the phone back together and cracked my screen. Hurray!
finished putting it back together and there's no improvement.
I'll pull it apart and place the above screw directly into the motherboard as instructed and see if that helps.
Will update upon completion.
