What are some alternatives to the AllShare Cast Dongle? It's not even available yet. How else can I hook up my phone via wireless to a tv set?

is there a way to connect to a tv not wirelessly? like using usb?
Nexus Q and HTC Media link should work. I am not sure if they are exact mirrors like the dongle but it should be.
Nexus Q can't do screen mirroring. The HTC Medialink isn't compatible with the Galaxy S3 due to proprietary software.
You're stuck with the $99 allshare cast dongle. I'd wait though since a lot of screen mirroring solutions are going to be made available and most likely cheap by the end of 2012. The WiFi Alliance is working on something called Miracast which is essentially android screen mirroring.

Apparently someone said the HTC media link works with the GS3. There was a thread on it.
You could buy a Samsung DVD or bluray player that has the allshare capability.

..different things, all share DLNA ( share movies from PC, phone to TV ) is different to All share cast ( where the phone is replicated on TV )
Need this!
So Im a school teacher and bought a GSIII for this accessory. Why isnt it available and does anyone know when it will be available? Im trying to do research now to see if I can get the HTC one to work with my GSIII, also I have a Nexus7 I would like to figure out how to make that work as well.
due to the overpricing of this thing (it'll be about 110 USD in sweden) I decided to pre-order an Ouya instead as it basically gives me the features I wanted an allshare dongle for but at the same price. But for those $100 I get a standalone tegra 3 device instead, basically a htc one x without a screen. It wont be out until march but the money value here is worth the wait.
Hello, anyone know if it´s possible to emulate the allshare cast dongle with a PC ??
i mean, that piece of hardware must use some software that can be inatalles as a program in a notebook and then the notebook connected to the TV.
Could this be done?
PD: chrome cast doesn´t mirror the games for example and samsung dongle yes
chromecast alternatives and other ways to mirror your phone... [via and xbox]
With all the new apps and wireless technologies out there now, is there a way to get the same cast functionality going through an XBOX connected TV with your phone?
I have a Samsung Note 3 and XBOX 360 and want to mirror my phones screen and control some apps like you can with the Chromecast, mainly a web browser on the XBOX.
Thank you for any help!!

I installed Mirror OP sender and Mirror Op receiver on my notebook and cell phone and then connected the notebook with HDMI to my TV. I have mirror now, but it has too much lag.
If someone make some retroengineering on an all share cast dongle i think we can emulate it, the notebook or pc connected to the tv has to have enough power to copy the software functions of that dongle!! . Soemone must know more about this.

I would be surprised if not nearly any laptop out there got more power than the small dongle device?
In addition I think the lag (most recognizable in games) might come from the wireless transmission maybe?

I asked the Samsung chat support for this youtube video : watch?v=FX3y7O_TOew
they told me that feature was only available for rooted concept devices, so... we can see that they do the same as Chrome Cast dongle but without buying any dongle. ...
this so called "WEB PAGE SHARE" function doesnt appear on new note 2, s4, s3 or note 3, maybe someone can make a rom or something to make this work ??? its also showed in this video:

hmmmm
What is difference between the "AllShare Cast Dongle" and EZCast?
Anyone tried them both?
via hdmi
has anyone tried this
i nkow the GS3 worked with the Netgear PTV3000
but it seems to be a case by case thing, because the NOte 10.1 didn't
I bought the all share cast hub, but it sucks, because only the Note 2 can connect to it, and no other Miracast certified device (laptop) can
although the allshare cast is based on Miracast
So I am looking to get the PTV3000 which I know my laptop will connect to, and any miracast phone should (Nexus 4, GS3 already confirmed to work)
I hope someone who has tried the GNote 2 can weigh in
Thanks

If you look here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1847290 you can see that the Samsung Galaxy S3 is supposed to work with Netgear ptv3000. But there is also issues as seen here http://goo.gl/TkAUT
I currently own a Galaxy Note 2 (sgh-i317m LTE model) and the new Push2TV (ptv3000) and no matter what I do I cannot get it to work
My phone runs on stock 4.1.1 JB and my PTV3000 is up to date.
If I put the Push2Tv in Miracast "mode" I see it from my GN2 AllShare Cast menu and it tries to connect ... but after many seconds it fails.
If someone else got it to work I would like to know also

Full Miracast support isn't approved until Android 4.2 (according to Wiki)
Just received an email from Netgear support:
Thank you for choosing NETGEAR. My name is ... and I will be your support expert. I appreciate the opportunity to assist you.
Regarding the concern, sometime early next year Netgear will release the firmware for this device that will enable the Miracast to work with your smart phone. So at present you will not be able to use this feature from your Smart Phone.

I know 4.2 will officially support Miracast but we are talking about "AllShare Cast". The partnership has been announced between Samsung and Netgear but I see an update will be required.

Ah..I see. AllSHare cast TO a PVT3000. Wow. That's a great idea!! The second it works I will buy a Netgear PVT 3000!
Edit: Found this.
I'm running Sprint GSIII w/ 4.1 and follow these steps:
1) Hook up the PTV3000 like normal (power, HDMI)
2) When it's booted up and displays ready to connect, I push the little button on the side and get the PTV3000 into Miracast mode
3) Launch "Allshare Cast" from the GSIII, click on and let it scan. It should display some "random" Netgear PTV3000 number
4) Click "Connect"; a pop-up window should open saying "Connecting", and once done you should be connected.
.....and that's it. Whatever you do on the phone will display on your TV exactly as does in the palm of your hand. Sometimes I have to toggle the button on the side of the PTV3000 and restart the Allshare Cast app to get it to connect, but nothing else is necessary.

All that process is exactly what I do, but at step 4 it says "Connecting", for a while, then it fails
I have a Canadian Rogers Galaxy Note II with stock 4.1.1 rom (simply rooted). It looks like it should work but it doesn't. I've even tried to connect right after switching between the WiDi to Miracast mode (saw this trick elsewhere) but it's a no go.
I'll wait for Netgear update
GS3 vs. GNII - shouldn't they both work??
It's strange that GS3 works while GNII doesnt - no? Really looking for a simple solution to push out to tv. have GTV 1Gen version (revue) and can't get anything to work properly to push to tv. was oping this box could do it!

Yes strange, I thought GS3 and GN2 were very similar. I've tried may scenario like resetting my PTV3000 with the reset button, restarted my GN2, tried to connect right after switching mode, waited for a complete AllShare Cast scan... and no solutions seems to work at the moment.
If someone know how to make it work without any PTV3000 update I'm ready to try
So is there any chance of extending the display to 1080p and outputting this to the miracast adapter? Ideally running two displays: An input device application (e.g. virtual KB/ mouse) on the phone and the main Android display on the monitor/TV?
Does a similar solution exist currently?

I can confirm that the 2.2.4 firmware works with my Note 2.
PTV3000 2.2.4
Fully stock Note 2 AT&T - with the new 4.1.2 JB (multi window) update from samsung.
I had tried 2.1.4, 2.1.5, 2.2.2 and none worked.
After applying the 2.2.4 firmware the 1st couple of times connection failed. It turned off my wifi on the phone for some reason. When I turned it back on, opened Chrome browser then pulled the drop down message/task window and hit the "AllShare Cast" button, voila! It connected and is working pretty darn well considering this is beta. Lag is about 1 second, but all I want to do is watch pod casts/videos. Youtube as well as videos from channel9.msdn.com are playing perfectly (which I believe uses a silverlight/html 5 player).
I received a text in the middle of a video, so I flipped out to read it (mirrored on TV perfectly) but when I went back to chrome, the TV was stuck on the view of my message. I turned off the allcast, back on and it's running fine again."

That's a done deal for me. Buying one. You can set up PS3 Media Server to run from a PC, and use UPNPlayer to access PS3 Media Server on the Note 2, then play a video through MX Player or DicePlayer and wirelessly, sending it to the Netgear PVT3000. And that's my goal.
I will put up a video once I have this working.
It is stuff like this that still casts a shadow on android. Apple tends to work really well with apple products but android based on open source which supposedly supports more standards out of the box just asks for a bad rap when OEM's halfass hardware support. And why doesn't android still not have a GOTO product that supports mirroring and dual screen support? Android is just begging for a universal dock, much like laptops have had for awhile, but the OEM's are too greedy and limit accessories on the fact that you'll buy the next accessory that is only supported by x phone or x brand.

Apple requires an Apple TV to "Airplay" and this means obviously, totally closed source. Android is developing the open sourced Miracast into it's operating system base. That means ANY Miracast enabled device will allow for functioning wireless display. Samsung's All Share cast can already connect with a Samsung dongle OR a Samsung TV that has AllShare Cast enabled. BUT, Allshare ALSO works with a Miracast enabled receiver, like the PVT3000 which is in firmware dev right now.
PVT3000 firmware 2.2.4 works with Stock Allshare cast Samsung ROMS currently (with some noise issues).
While Android, being that it is open source doesn't have a dedicated wireless app, besides Miracast, is going to run behind Apple, once it is finished solving the bugs it will surpass Apple just like everything else in Android that has been refined does.
Take a look at the Nexus 4 Miracasting. And you don't need "Android/Google TV" to use it.
3:30 mark to see the delay from Nexus 4 to the screen (perfect for video...not for gaming)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DwvYrv2s9Kk
Now...see what NVIDIA has done using the Tegra 3 to enhance Miracast.
:35 mark for delay example.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b52zqNIeQso
What's my point? It will get there, and when it does, it will be excellent.
EDIT: LG tv's are coming with Miracast built in. Check out this video. practically zero lag.
56 second mark for example.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xPzRWw5LNL4
Edit 2:
Also..AirPlay has HUGE delays. About 3-4 seconds. While Miracast is getting down to around 60MS.
http://forum.algoriddim.com/viewtopic.php?id=1307
Manufacturers getting on board with Miracast:
http://certifications.wi-fi.org/sea...=&date_from=&date_to=&selected_certifications[]=69&x=62&y=15
and
http://certifications.wi-fi.org/sea...=&date_from=&date_to=&selected_certifications[]=67&x=37&y=8
I would say with this kind of collaboration it won't be long before Miracast comes to Apple products, unless Apple doesn't want that...then they had better expand the allowed receivers and improve their latency dramatically.
PVT3000 works on Galaxy Note 2 stock 4.1 ROM.
Ok. Received my Netgear PVT300 and here is what I have found so far. ONly testing with the 2.2.4 currently using a Galaxy Note 2 with stock ROM with power saving mode off.
1. NO noise line (garbled or digitized delays in the feed)
2. Sound and video sync fine.
3. If I am streaming Youtube, it seems that it works great, then may pause or stutter a bit. If I pick the phone up and click the power button or rotate the phone in my hand the stuttering goes away almost instantly. Like the phone has gone to sleep and moving it or pressing power brings the CPU back up to full speed. This may be important if Samsung needs to know that AllShare Cast sleeps too easily.
4. Netflix will NOT play through my wifi network when I have the AllShare cast on. Instead it grabs the cell tower for some weird reason. Also, equally as strange, Netflix plays the 16:9 (widescreen) videos in 4:3 (standard) making them look compressed...squished. Bizarre. As soon as I drop AllShare Cast the image goes widescreen and uses the wifi again.
5. Sometimes the AllShare complains that the stream is unstable and if I reconnect I might get a better signal. I am going to try placing the PVT in a better line of site place as it sits behind my HDTV right now.
6. And you aren't going to believe this one. I can connect to the PVT, then open up UPNPlayer, THEN...open a video that is being served from my PS3 Media Server off my PC, and play a 720P movie through the phone and out to the PVT. Unreal.
7. The only real hiccup is some actual frame dropping during playing. It's not bad...really barely noticeable But I can see it. If I have to guess I would say that there is a sync problem of some sort as the hiccup happens in a very evenly timed interval. Like every 23 out of 25 frames, that frame drops.
8. The delay is really minimal. I mean, you can see the delay from phone screen movement to TV, but even if you wanted to play a game...you could do it without much trouble if the game didn't require pinpoint reactivity (think Angry Birds Star Wars..lol)
Future testing plans:
I have not tried long term video playing, but I plan to and I plan to do it with the screen forced to stay on as well....just to see if the phone is deep sleeping and making the stream stutter because of it. I also plan to do all these same tests with 2.2.6 or the next beta that comes out (whichever happens first). I also want to try a customer ROM with a better kernel. I had a ROM on before and used the Perseus kernel and man....the phone was stupid fast. But I think it was killing the battery. Actually...that is another thing I wasnt to check. Making sure the battery can still charge while doing all of this. Sometimes running too many things and the GPS at the same time won't let the battery charge fast enough to beat the drain. Depends on your wall adapter really. Samsung's adapter is a 2 amp output and the phone needs it sometimes.
I could video my findings, but I doubt anyone cares that much.
HDCP
With a rooted note 2 running CleanROM ACE, I consistently get HDCP errors when attempting to connect. My girlfriend's stock note 2 works fine.
I'm not an expert, however from what I've read most roms do not include the files for HDCP authentication. I searched my device for libstagefright_hdcp.so for example, and came up with nothing.
The question arises:
Can you simply toss those files in the file system where they need to be? Will this yield the desired result?
I've also seen discussion of Cyanogen including these files with a setting to disable HDCP if a device is buggy. Can anyone confirm that?
Thanks for your time.
Hi,
I am using rooted stock rom from here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2332999
With this rom, I am unable to connect to my allshare Cast Dongle.
Then I found it might be about being rooted.
So, I applied the fix with TriangleAway to reset flash counter.
However, even after reset with Tirangleaway, the download screen shows flash counter 1.
I guess that's because of the behaviour of new bootloader.
But this way I still can't connect to my Allshare Cast Dongle.
It connects than says it's disconnected.
Is there anyone who successfully connects to allshare Cast Dongle from Note 8 ?
Is there anyone who successfully connects to allshare Cast Dongle from Note 8 with a rooted rom ?
Btw, I also installed stock recovery to have flash counter 0 but it didn't help.
Please help me.

EDIT:
apparently it doesn't work.
Flash counter need to be zero for allshare cast to work = stock kernel and recovery.

At least we know it works in some configuration .
Technically it wouldn't be a bad idea from a legal and membership perspective for Samsung to cause an HDCP or other fall on rooted devices.

I am thinking of getting the AllShareCast dongle and I have the N5100 which is rooted. It's just disappointing to hear that it doesn't work on a rooted device. Can anyone out there confirm that there is a way for it to work on a root? Are there alternate wireless HDMI dongles that work with the Note 8?
I need one for a big presentation next month.
rooted stock Galaxy Note 8 GT-N5100
I believe the Netgear PTV3000 or whatever it is and possibly the older model, should work as should Miracast capable dongles in general. YMMV however, especially over HDCP. I know the S3 and Nexus 4 Miracast take different details on it.
From a serious use perspective as someone that owns both Samsung's MHL and Miracast adapters, it's not a big loss unless you actually need the wireless. You can get 1080p30 out of the wired adapter and solid performance, despite the loss of the MicroUSB port, this is pretty good stuff. You can even use MultiWindow while using the MHL but not while using Miracast. Using the AllShare Cast dongle you can get 720p (I forget the frame rate) and a latency that slingshots wildly (even the best systems are still 60ms or worse I believe). On top of that because of the Wi-Fi direct connection, latency is going to be worse if your dongle isn't dual band and things that auto scale video quality to network bandwidth are liable to degrade.
Using the Samsung dongle, artifacts and codec issues are quite common, and the latency makes it only suitable for video playback and "Producitivty" apps. Gaming with it is a failure waiting to happen, in so much as something like Shadowgun or Dead Trigger goes. Where as it is very pleasent with the MHL adapter.

I'm surprised to see that there are others with same problem on Note 8 and Allshare Cast dongle.
Is there any Note 8 user with rooted rom and capable of using the dongle ?
Also, I didn't understand about the miracast discussion. as far as I know, our Note 8 does not have miracast software included. (at least with official samsung rom)
how do you use miracast ?
is Netgear PTV3000 a miracast client/dongle ?
What if you turn off root and make sure root app is in data and not in system /APP.
It is the same with readershub, if the superuser or supersu app is in system it wont work.
that is why in my custom rom I put it in data.

My custom kernel and in triangle away I use the option, reset at boot, this way on every reboot it stays at 0.
@civato
I noticed that. But then I wrote the last situation with your kernel and v2.90
But withthat config (v2.90 on your kernel) I am unable to reset the counter.
First of all, the app does not boot the device as in v3.0. It says the counter is reset but it does not reset. When I reopen the app or check on status I see flash counter 2.
btw, I've explained my problem in detail on your kernel thread at:

how do you use miracast ?
is Netgear PTV3000 a miracast client/dongle ?

I'd appreciate any answers.
AllShare Cast is Samsung's name for Miracast or WiDi, much the same that AllShare Play (now Samsung Link) was their name for their DLNA software. The modern firmware supports Miracast, to my understanding the Netgear miracast dongles devices work and have better performing codecs. HDCP issues between the various dongles, TouchWiz, CyanogenMod, and Nexus ROMs cause some compatability issues. A couple CyanogenMod developers have posted at length about this on Google Plus: the HDCP differences between dongles/ROMs, what works with what, and the performance of the dongles and various phones hardware/firmware.
Basically if you're using "AllShare Cast", you are using Miracast.
I have not invested in the Netgear dongles for my own testing because the wired connection is best for my purposes (playing games and Netflix streaming). My Galaxy S3 and Note 8.0 are the only devices that I have that support Miracast, so I can't test the dongle with other stuff.
BTW the models of some Galaxy devices are certified Miracast (the GT-I9300 GS3 was, I assume the international S4's are).

Thanks for the information.
So, the Netgear dongle is in fact usable with Allshare Cast ?
Does it perform better ?
Does it have the issue with rooted firmwares ?
I am using rooted N5100 rom on a N5105 and Allshare Cast Dongle does not stay connected because the system is modified.
If Netgear doesn't have this problem I will order one.
As you can see my status with my custom rom and kernel.
I press the reset counter and it just resets it to 0.
No reboot needed.
If I reboot or even flash a new custom rom it stays at 0 because of the Option "Auto reset at boot".
I understand that it works on your N5100 but in fact my device is N5105.
it might be because that my device is in fact a N5105 and I use stock N5100 rom (there is no stock N5105 rom that I could find)
My bootloader says N5105 so the system sets flash counter when booting.
A possible solution would be changing bootloader making the deive completely N5100, but I don't know if that's possible. Is it ? How ?

I am thinking of getting the AllShareCast dongle and I have the N5100 which is rooted. It's just disappointing to hear that it doesn't work on a rooted device. Can anyone out there confirm that there is a way for it to work on a root? Are there alternate wireless HDMI dongles that work with the Note 8?
I need one for a big presentation next month.

I'm surprised to see that there are others with same problem on Note 8 and Allshare Cast dongle.

My note 8.0 is rooted with everything stock.

I'm not familiar with this device, but doesn't the Google Chromecast have more potential?
I have a samsung galaxy s4 and am planning to buy the allshare wifi dongle/cast, but i have a doubt after reading reviews in the Amazon on this product. Can you/any one please confirm this: I have a home WiFi network, and I am planning to Browse internet, watch youtube on my phone after connecting to all share dongle. will it possible to do it? I heard that you have to enable wifi direct on your phone to connect to the dongle, doing so will disconnect my phone from Wi-Fi Home network ... is it Rit?

Difficult to say at this stage, whilst they are similar in concept, the execution is very different. Chromecast doesn't screen mirror, but does stream separately from your device. I have both, and have different uses for both.

I use AllShare Cast on my Galaxy Note 2 and 8 - yes, it does connect via WiFi Direct, but this doesn't mean you are disconnected from your home network. i.e. you can still browse the web, watch Netflix etc whilst screen mirroring via AllShare.

Dave

thanks dave. Another thing here... buying allshare will limit the usage to only Samsung devices... any other device which can accept any android 4.0+ devices and mirror the screen on HD TV ???

It does appear as a Miracast device to my Nexus 4, which detects, connects, and mirrors.
My HTC One detects it and I've had it connect and mirror for a few seconds, but haven't been able to connect again.

Dave

Not anymore, it doesn't.
Google just pushed an OTA that breaks any kind of local streaming capability except the PC Chrome > Cast one.
It's obvious that the Chrome cast was subsidized by big media companies, and they didn't like it when devs like Koush were able to stream straight from phone to TV. This would make piracy easier.
This is absolutely ret... dumb. The biggest reason I bought Chromcast was to stream my photos and videos. My CC has been sitting behind my TV collecting dust since the day I got. I tried out Allcast, it was great. Then this came along... I'm considering returning my CC.
Hello everyone.
Am I able to connect my lg g3 to samsungs allshare cast dongle for mirroring and etc.?
I have SGS3 T999
I commented... on my phone without more I don't remember I had the screen mirroring q was perfect but when I upgrade to 4.3 screen mirroring is disabled the minute a little more... unto you pass equal.
Comment also q put smasung patch and still the same...
Any solution? or some screen mirroring for the galaxy?
I am not sure I completely follow that question or questions. If you are looking for Screen Mirroring options, then there are several apps that offer such a functionality. Primarily Miracast comes to mind. As always the phone does support DLNA if your TV supports.

disconnects right away... I only thing I want to do is mirror of my phone to the TV screen...
I just wanted to mention that this should be in the Q&A, Help and Troubleshooting section. I rooted my phone with custom ROM and Recovery and only had to download the AllshareCast Dongle S/W update to get my phone to work with the smartdock and MHL adapter. But doing a quick search of "allshare" on the play store brings up multiple alternatives for the allshare cast app which might work.

I was just doing some reading on random posts and found this which may help. I had done this before updating and didn't realize that it had anything to do with fixing the problem.
Yes that is correct. Particularly if you are using Samsung's own Screen Mirroring.
I still make it work ahhh if I find another solution as dire... thanks for everything
