The current physical condition of your phone? - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

Im curious.
Ive had my phone for about a year and a half now and Its flawless. I never use a case, screen protector, or holster and its flawless.
Im curious because so many of my friends break and scratch their phones (mostly iphones) and it drives me insane.
So tell me, how long have you had your phone? Any cases or protection?

No case and only a screen protector. Mine is almost a year old, the casing looks flawless except for a few high friction spots.
Beamed from my Maguro.

AW: The current physical condition of your phone?
No case or what so ever..
The quality of the screen is a bit less than it was before.. I have a small line (white) at the bottom and top of the screen (looks like the screen moved under the glass) & the battery life is a bit decreased. (It's 13 months old) but I still love it, and see no reason to upgrade to another phone (;
Nor will I RMA it don't want to miss this thing ^^

No scratches or anything with a 5$ gel case. Had the phone since sprint released it.

Mine just have 4 months, it is the white one and I use a case and a screen protector. It looks like it was when I bought it

I don't normally drop my phone, but for some reason I dropped this phone a few times. Mostly while bike riding using out as a MP3 player switching tracks and putting it back in the holster.
I use a basic holster set light minimum protection case, screen protector and holster.

Mine's pretty flawless after 9 months. I mean, a couple hairline scratches on the screen that can't be seen when turned on, but thats normal
No screen protector, no case.

I've had the phone for about 3 months now and already have a chip on the bottom of the screen and a couple dings on the side.. I usually don't drop my phone but I happened to with this one. Now I have a case and screen protector before i do any more damage lol.

few months old. no case, no sp. like new.

I've had mine for 14mo now - no case and no screen protector. The only blemish I have is around the camera bezel because the design does not allow it to sit flat when laid on its back - something the design engineers overlooked I suppose.
I always pocket the device with nothing else in my pocket and keep it clear from clumsy people and children.

I've had mine for 7 months. A couple small nicks in the bezel and one or two small scratches on the screen. Performance and battery life is still excellent. I plan on keeping this phone until my contract expires before upgrading.

Sv: The current physical condition of your phone?
Screen and glass changed once. Now the glass is cracked again and the speaker doesnt work. The mic barely works. Yay...

I've had mine since fall of last year. I hate cases and screen protectors so I've been using the phone as is that whole time.
It has held up surprising well. There are a few very small scratches on the screen but nothing that I notice normally and everything else is basically like it was when I bought it.
I've dropped the phone several times (includes once on the sidewalk hard enough for the back to pop off and the battery to go flying out.)
I also spilled a mimosa on it once...
So yes I can confidently say I am very happy with the durability of this phone.
Although sadly a friend of mine who got a galaxy nexus right before verizon discontinued them (she is not a phone person) dropped hers about a month in and now her screen is shattered

just bought N4, and my galaxy nexus still having CAPDASE Kila screen protector

No case but a screen protector and I bought it on release date. No screen scratches underneath the protector and only have a scratch on the top right corner from a spill it took at the gym lol

I always use a screen protector and case. The only wear that is barely detectable on any phone I have is around the USB port with many attempted plugins in the dark or not looking.

I've had mine since the December of 2011. I've had an Invisible Shield on, basically since I got it, but I never use a case. I have one small scratch around the camera area, not on the lense thankfully. Other than that, it's basically flawless and I wouldn't trade it for any other phone right now.

Mine has been covered in the Samsung TPU case (OEM) offered in Verizon stores, and I have only the faintest scratch on the display. The phone is in as close to mint condition as you can get for a 1+ year old phone. Never applied protection to the display, nor will I even consider doing that.

I got my phone used a few months ago. It had a couple scratches on the bottom corner but even that is barely visible. Other than that, Its nearly mint condition. I have a case but only really use it if I feel like changing things up. Most of the time, I dont use it. I have a screen protector but only use one because I hate fingerprints on the screen. I have never broken a phone. I'm careful with my stuff.

Had mine for 14mo, the screen`s got a few scratches but nothing major and the corners of the case have some scratches and dings. Been using it without a case the whole time and without a screen protector for the last few months. Volume buttons don`t work though. Seems like I`ve been one of the few unlucky ones to have this issue.

Who is streaking? (no case or screen protector)

Anyone? Does the screen scratch easily? The screen is my main worry.
TPU case and no screen protector for me. Check out this thread.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1384218
Ok now that would bother the crap out of me. Maybe I should get a screen protector.
I posted this in the other thread regarding a screen protector:
I've never found a screen protector that doesn't take away from both the look and feel of the screen. This is why I don't use screen protectors. In my opinion, I'll take a few minor scratches and marks that occur from normal use over screwing up the look and feel of the screen by putting on a screen protector. If you're not happy w/ the way the screen looks and/or feels w/ the protector, then what's the point? It kind of defeats the purpose. This is the conclusion I've come to after being disappointed using screen protectors on some of my previous phones.
Also, notice that I said minor scratches, i.e., the kind you have to really look for under a bright light to see. If you're the type of person that isn't particularly careful with your phone (i.e., my wife), by all means, get a screen protector.
Just my two cents.
I've had my Galaxy Nexus for two weeks now, no case, no screen protector, no scratches.
I wouldn't mind minor scratches either, but that one looks deep. How did he do it? He doesn't say in the first post.
naked and loving it!
Have had mine since Thanksgiving and no case or screen protector. I just watch what else is in my pockets with it.
I've been using it without anything for the past 2 weeks and loving it. Touchwood
I was gonna streak at work today but i had no where to put my phone. Touch wood.

I'm totally streaking. But I definitely keep the GN away from things like keys and spare change. I liked the neoprene sleeve that came with the Nexus One. Will probably get one for the GN soon.
Ive been lucky
In the 6 years I have owned smart phones, I have never used a screen protector. But I do use cases.
Body skin and screen protector here....
Never used a case or screen protector. Never had a scratched screen. Just keep your phone pocket empty and clean.

Streaking over 2 weeks....just enjoy your phone!
I generally don't like cases as they take away from the design of the phone. I also haven't had luck with screen protectors that are worth a damn. I avoid putting it in the same pocket with my keys though or anything metal for that matter.

It's like putting plastic on the couch! Just enjoy the damn thing and keep it away from keys and change! I just got mine so will baby it for a week or two and then it will be back to business as usual!
No case and no protector. Not willing to sacrifice beauty of display or feel. I'd rather buy a new screen if I ever get to scratch this one than deal with any protector for the next year or two.
My experience has been that it is easy too scratch. Treating it exactly like my old moto cliq I've acquired 3 very minor scratches in 2 weeks. Admittedly minor... hut I'm not waiting for it become a problem, my screen protector is in the mail.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using XDA App
this is definitely too beautiful of a device to cover up. A case is out of the question. though I noticed a hairline scratch on the top left corner of mine out of nowhere, leading me to the conclusion that, at the very least, the coating is a weak point. I decided to go with a steinheil ultra screen protector and although it doesn't cover the whole thing, it looks and feels great. certainly eases my worries a lot more. basically, it's the minimal amount of aesthetic interference (if you can call it that) for pretty decent screen protection.

Anyone running the screen naked?

I put a protector on my phone the day I bought it but it irritates me. If anyone's running it nude, how scratch resistant does it seem to be? Is a protector really needed?

I ran my MotoDroid without a screen protector but with a good case.. The phone wouldn't have lasted the two years without the case.. but the naked screen has maybe 1 or 2 minor scratches (when viewed from an angle) after two years..
So I'll by doing the same for my GNex
I put a screen protector on my SGN and it looked horrid. After a few days of putting up with it I finally removed it. The screen definitely looks better without a screen protector IMHO. Maybe I just got a cheap screen protector, don't know.
As far as scratches, one week and no scratches. Time will tell though. I may go with a screen protector again if I can find one which doesn't seriously diminish image quality.
Anyone know of a high quality screen protector which will not degrade the image quality?
I've had my Nexus for nearly two months now. From the beginning I've been using it completely nude, both screen and the body. It has two tiny little scratches on the screen that are seen only in strong, direct lightning conditions only when the screen is off or pitch black. They are not disturbing at all when I use the phone. BTW, my misses, who's got Desire S reinforced by Gorilla Glass has some tiny scratches on the screen as well, so I don't see the point to BS about this Gorilla Glass wonder .
What's more interesting, I dropped my GNex from about 1m screen down on the ground and it survived. There are a few spots (rather then scratches) in the bottom left corner of the phone, I can see them when looking directly.
Finally, I'm gonna write some more about scratches etc on the GNex in the future because I'm gonna go nude for at least 2 years (I've got Three Insurance on it so don't bother)

I had a screen protector on my OG Droid for all of a week. Since then no one in my family has used a screen protector on any Android phone we have had:
2 OG Droid
3 Eris
2 Droid X
1 Droid Incredible
1 Thunderbolt
2 Galaxy Nexus
Not one ever had scratches on the screen. Some did have the screen break but a screen protector would have not stopped that. When I see threads where people have big scratchs on there screens I can't imagine how it happens as I keep my phone in my jeans pocket. Who knows how my 15 year old daughter keeps hers, my wife just throws hers (my old thunderbolt) in her purse (drives me nuts).
I just don't like the feel of a screen protector.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using XDA App
i stopped using screen protectors long ago. hate the damn things.. especially when i got that crap 'invisi-shield' on my Thunderbolt(hated the feel) and ended up having to get it replaced twice.
these days i just use a basic silicone case & no protectors at all. i just make sure that whatever pocket i put my phone in not to put anything else in with it(especially keys).
Had the Galaxy Nexus about two weeks now, and I use all my devices without any case and without any screen protector.
Not a single scratch as of yet. Now it is worth noting the reason I am willing to carry my devices without any protection is because I am a fanatic.
My phone never rests face down unless on a soft cloth, my phone remains in my pocket and it is NEVER in the pocket with anything else, even headphones. I also rarely drop my phones but I just find them so much more comfortable and easy to use without the extra bulk.
I really hate the feel of screen protectors on high end phones.
UPDATE: Edit, I do not however, let my wife carry hers without a screen protector because she just chucks it in her purse and I nearly die inside everytime I see it.
been without a SP for a while but finally getting one soon. ordered this one: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1414052
ordered that specifically because many people here and on reviews said that it's almost identical to the stock screen and doesn't hurt the quality at all.
i hated the screen protectors. never had any screen protectors on any of my nexus's (N1, NS, GN)
but you will need to handle it with care.
i use a pouch with it, so, when in pocket, its sort of protected. but when you do not handle with care eg while playing with it then dropped it, then i am not sure what will happen.
Screen protectors look awful. I will never put one on any of my phones.
I've had the phone since the 23rd. i largely hate screen protectors, tried one on my moto xoom and i find they tend to get dull and crappy looking very quickly.
I'm a huge fan of keeping my phones in a slip case (something like the nexus ones neoprene case) While i search for a good slip case for the nexus i've been using a sun glasses bag when it's in my pocket. So far zero scratches and tons of use.
Nevaer had screen protectors in any of my phones...

Always... that is what I use insurance for. The cost of a case and accessories is almost over half my deductible if I really messed up the phone.
No screen protector. I'd have to replace it weekly, I hate the dull, dirty and scratched look. I've yet to find a company who's screen protectors don't do that.
I've had mine since the 8th, and it goes in my pocket with the headphones. Inside jacket pocket or jeans pocket depending on what I'm doing. No scratches or other markings on the screen so far.
My SGS prior had 1 scratch from a year and a half of use and that was due to my wife putting her hand (with rings on) into my coat pocket to grab my phone. I heard the diamond scratch the glass. Serious shudder moment.

Past performance doesn't necessarily predict future outcomes.
If a minor scratch doesn't bother you, don't use a screen protector. But if you plan to sell the phone later and want the most money, obviously you should use one - you'll get used to it after a few days and not care.

True but it does help set a precedent, that the OP can use to determine if they feel comfortable enough to follow through with a naked phone or not.

While a screen protector will prevent scratches, I would edit your line above and say. "Putting a screen protector on doesn't necessarily predict future selling price." But it can't hurt.
Now to the meat of this. NO! Not everyone gets used to having a screen protector on their phone. I've tried 6-7 different screen protectors over the last two years trying to find one that replicates the feel of the glass. So far...no go. I find screen protectors to be grippy, and I hate that feel. Even ones that say they are smooth still feel grippy, and then there is the issue of having to install them. You practically need a clean room. Then the dirt and dust collects around the edges of the screen protectors and makes them stand out. I could go on, but ya not everyone gets used to them.
OCD...maybe a little. But for me, so far at least; screen protectors are a no go.
Now don't get me started on cases.
O.
I carry my GNEX in my jeans but never put keys, money etc in the same pocket. No scratches so far
No screen protector here, and no scratches yet. Never had any scratches on my Hero for 2 1/2 years so won't be using one this time either.
Used to swear by screen protectors. Couldn't use a phone without one.
Not used a screen protector since my Touch Pro 2 and never had a scratch on any of my phones since. I just stopped filling my 'phone pocket' with diamonds and the other sharp stuff I used to carry around.
Regards.

Dropped the phone today, no case, no screen protector!

Walking down the hall today carrying my laptop and phone, wasn't even thinking and phone slipped out and dropped on the ceramic tile floor.
It has no case and no screen protector.
It fell from slightly above waist high.
When I picked up the phone, the back plate had 2 notches that were partially unseated at the top of the phone. I re-seated them and inspected the phone closely. NO DAMAGE!!
Not a single scratch on the screen and no scratches on the body, whew!

Or just a case since most cases have front parts to prevent screen damage.
First phone I actually use a screen protector and case on.
I came from a LG G2x and a Blackberry (personal and work). Maybe I'm freaked out about not having a fall back anymore. But the phone is thin enough that a case doesn't add too much more.

Agreed, simply because cases provide a better grip to the phone especially for such a big phone.
I had a similar situation and dropped it in the bathroom floor from my pocket. 1 or 2 notches came off the back cover. Everything else is fine.
I dropped my Nexus S on the street and result 2 quite noticeable notches on the corners , I guess the surface was pretty hard and rough. At least I was lucky enough for the screen which is without a protector results fine.
Dropped every single phone I've ever had once or twice, my Desire is destroyed, I keep it as a spare, my Hero survived with minor wear marks, my SGS2 had one tiny scratch on the screen and a few marks around the edges of the phone, my month old Galaxy Nexus so far is spotless, touch wood.
I have a very very faint half inch long scratch near my earpiece. Thinking about getting a case. Probably not, I don't like them. I still need to get the spare battery.

I'm not rocking a case either and haven't really has a serious drop or anything yet (knock on wood) but one thing I have noticed is the gray material around edge and back (not the back rubber cover) is completely terrible. The slightest of dings takes chunks out of it. Why would they use such a cheap material that has no durability at all?
Also I've see several people taking keys to their display on YouTube. Are they aware that this screen isn't Gorilla Glass? I have some very faint hairline scratches on my screen that can't be seen unless looked at certain angles but it definitely isn't scratch resistant especially considering I haven't don't anything really that would cause the scratches. Still don't even know how they got there. Don't put phone in pocket with keys or usually anything and never lay face down.

True it does not have gorilla glass but it has sammys version of it. You wont get glass scratches from keys, you get that from dirt or sand making its way into your pocket and rubbing against the screen. As far as the plastic goes, that doesnt do so well when marked with keys
My heart would have stopped if that happened. I don't get cases because I feel I'm that much more secure with them, but most cases tend to give me a better grip- which I'd want anyways. I've not gotten a screen protector yet, as I haven't found one that I like. I want one that provides scratch resistant qualities, but isn't gummy like invisible shield.
Whilst staggering home on new year's eve I dropped mine onto the road, I have two little chips on one corner but other than that, no damage. (No case, no screen protector)
I was so disappointed with myself the next day but then I realised how incredibly lucky I was that it didn't suffer any more damage, especially the screen!
This may sound dumb but if you don't have a screen protector, avoid putting the phone face down. I believe that - along with picking up the phone carelessly whilst face down contributed to my extremely small scratch.

I'll try to be as helpful as possible: Hot.
Their is no way I could feel safe sporting this phone without a screen protector, but I have noticed that after dropping it twice on concrete, there are no visible marks. Hopefully I haven't just jinxed myself.
No you don't need a screen protector, they do nothing other than getting scratch, smudge and decrease the clarity of your screen. Another problem is the touch feeling of touching the glass.
For any discussion about scratches >> IT DOES NOT HAPPENS !!!
The Gorilla glass 2 on the galaxy s3 is probably the best glass in the market, doesn't scratch or easily breaks. Though the problem is the frame which scratch on drop.
I used my galaxy s3 for 3 weeks, got my screen protector on for the first 4 days and just took it off, it's just degrading my phone. I current own an iphone 4, new ipad, iphone 4s and i know they all scratches at some point, but not this galaxy s3.

This. I was scared of not using protection with this expensive phone (even though I had a Droid X for over two years without a single scratch).
I bought a Zagg HD and thought it was great....for the first couple of days. Then I realized I hate the feeling, scratched easier than normal glass! and turned a weird yellow color after a month. So I recently ditched it.
WOW, almost forgot how much more beautiful this screen is naked!
You guys have been sold by advertising.

There have been a lot of videos with people using razor blades and forks to try and scratch the screen and it looks really awesome. I have had Gorilla Glass screens in the past that had the same things done to them and somehow they got scratched when I used them. I don't know how it happens (maybe diamond wielding gremlins sneak into my pockets and do their evil deed when I am not looking), but it happens.
I am a 'better safe than sorry' kind of guy. I know that if I got a scratch on my screen it would bug me until I bought a new phone so I am putting on a screen protector. I have tried the Zagg on other phones (and on my iPad) and I hate the feel of it. To be honest, I have found that the cheap screen protectors work very well and are quite clear. If/when they scratch.... Put on another one and it looks new again. At around a buck each it's no big deal.
Actually... My HTC Sensation and my Samsung - whatever the first Galaxy was on Tmobile - still have the original cheap screen protectors on them so one dollar protected them for as long as I used them.
Put me down for "use a screen protector" (but not an expensive one).
I had my phone for about a week without a screen protector and it looked gorgeous. Not a single scratch. I had a Motorola Photon before for 8 months and it also has gorilla glass. I can tell you, the glass does stand well, but it showed some small scratches after that long (and I'm not rough).
After my first week owning the phone, I had it in my pocket while sitting down and it slipped out onto the tile below. Screen shattered. I don't have insurance so I had to spend $200 for my own screen to replace it. It sucked.
A screen protector seems like a useless product, and the good ones (invisible ones) are expensive, but trust me, its a lot cheaper than a new screen. Also invest in a good case. My bezel has a scuff from the fall.
Ive never used a screen protector, and luckily I haven't scratched my screen either. Have been using N7000 since first week it was released in Sweden. Have only dropped it twice, once from pocket height on concrete floor, once from nightstand table.. both times face down of course, haha. Except from that I'm careful with my Note, only put it in a pocket where there is nothing else, and face up when I leave it on for example a table. I've never seen a screen protector I would like to use myself, so I'm careful with my phone instead and if I scratch the screen I guess I'll have to replace it or buy a Note 2. But rather that than having screen protector on in my opinion

Hi, guy doesn't it feel better without a rubber on? Same thing you take a risk but it feels better. :highfive:
I'd have to say use a screen protector. It's the first thing I purchase when getting a new handset
Sony Ericsson P800, numerous XDA variants, a HD2 and now my S3 all have them, and as yet all my screens are immaculate
If you've got a $35 handset then treat it like one, if you've got a $500 handset then at least respect it a little
I even have accidental protection with no deductible through best buy and still have a case and protector lol

Id say if you have insurance on the phone, then I wouldnt use one. I had the similar scenario as you; had a screen protector for ~1 month and removed it and realized how beautiful the screen was, haha.

How is you GNex holding up? Can I please BAG the ZAGG?

He everyone I am new to the GNex forum. I just upgraded from a Nexus S that I have had since it came out.
I never had any sort if screen protection on my NS and after years of use it only got one scratch (my dog thought I was paying too much attention to my phone and not enough to her so she tried to knock it out of my hand. LESSON LEARNED).
How are your screens holding up? Is it made out of the same material as the NS? I have looked it up and everybody has a different opinion of what the LCD is made of so to be safe I bought a Zagg. It went on perfect as far as Zagg standards but I don't much care for the look or the texture. I would prefer the phone as intended, beautiful and minimal but if the screen can get scratched I'll leave the Zagg on.
I was also wondering about the sides top and bottom. After using the phone for a while how is that finish holding up? Again, I have a case but don't like the look. Please share your experience with hardware longevity. Thanks forum.

Kept mine out of the TPU skin 3 days. Would up with one nick that can't be seen but can be felt with a nail. Case went back on.
The gnex screen is definitely prone to scratching. This is no gorilla glass by any stretch of the imagination... I have a couple nice scratches and don't even know when they happened.

Owned mine 33 days. Case caught the edge of my pocket. Tried to catch it spiked it to the floor. Huge crack from headphone jack to the top of the volume key. Then from there to the power key. Now its 5 months old (been without a case since then) and just a couple scratches. Note to self 1. Don't try to catch a falling phone, it'll never end well. 2. Don't use a case haha
But as for the housing. If you drop it, it'll chip. I would use a case to be safe.

I got a couple of scratches pocketing the phone. Got a neoprene pouch which allows me to pocket the phone and use it bare. No screen protector.
I really depends on how good you are at not dropping or scratching your phone.
I've had my GNex for about 8 months. I got an Otter Box right way, but i've never used the screen protector provided. I'm definitely not particularly kind to my phone and I think the screen has held up pretty well. There are a few small, very shallow scratches, but you can't really feel them and they aren't visible when the screen is illuminated.
So, last week I was at the mall there was a Zagg kiosk so I stopped by I showed my GNex to the Zagg rep he told me that I put it on wrong and replaced it. Now it looks pretty great I am getting used to the texture. I guess its a small price to pay after hearing some of the scratched screen stories on the forum.
TIP: HAVE YOUR ZAGG PROFESSIONALY INSTALLED. Even if you have done it yourself take it to the mall and have them redo it (for free) you will be glad you did and if they hand it to you and you think it could look better hand it back and have them redo it again took 3 times for me. They might roll their eyes or shake their head but its your phone and should look right, and really how often are you gonna see the Zagg guy so for one time in your life be that picky hard to please customer. Your Nexus desrervs it.
