Are they really that necessary? I had my hero for a while without one and never had a problem. I'm just saying, because I got the invisible shield one and now it sucks. For a couple months its cool, but after a while they just make my screen look ****ty. Peeling off one corner. And it looks like when I first attempted to put it on particles in the air, dust, etcetera stuck to it. There's no avoiding that. At a certain angle you can see the little particles. Its really lame I think I'm about to Peel this crap off.
Does anyone use on?

The evo screen is much more durable than the hero screen was.
I used a zagg on my evo for several months but after seeing how much it was taking away from my "viewing pleasure" I took it off and haven't looked back. I actually dropped and cracked the corner of my evo a while back and before I sent it back I TRIED to scratch the screen with keys, knives, razor blades, rocks.. I literally couldn't scratch it. I'm sure a diamond ring would do the job but at this point, imo, no screen protector is worth the money or detracting from screen clarity.
I had an invisible shield for months and was able to live with it until it just got too nasty to look at... Had it off for a couple weeks now and can honestly say I should've saved my money and left it on the rack... just my .02
I've had an invisible shield since september, and had best buy install it. It looks great, but it feels weird to the touch. I was really paranoid about the seen getting ugly, but from what I've read, there's really nothing to worry about. My friend got rid of her shield after she ruined it, and she's pretty happy with it bare.

So to add to the OP I would also like to ask those of you that go bare, do you keep your phone in your pants pocket? Does it get scratched by keys, change, etc. when taking it out or putting it back in your pocket? The reason I ask is because I use InvisibleShield and when it starts to look like crap I pay the $2.99 shipping and they send me a new one as long as I send the old one back within 60 days there are no other charges. I am on my 3rd InvisibleShield on my EVO now, but I would seriously consider going bare if it is truly that hard to scratch the screen. Thanks.
It is truly hard to scratch the screen. I've had a bare screen on my Evo forever and I can't imagine it otherwise. Dropping it and cracking the screen is another story
Bare since day one and zero scratches. I carry my keys in a different pocket tho.

I would recommend the Realook screen protectors. You can hardly tell it's even there. You have to be really careful when you install them. Smallest piece of dirt under them will really mess it up. I got my EVO at launch and just recently added the screen protector. I had a few scratches but nothing major.
I just bought a couple sets of these
http://www.overstock.com/Electronics/Screen-Protector-for-HTC-EVO-4G-Pack-of-2/5497913/product.html
I've had a screen protector on my EVO since I got it on launch day. I had the Zagg on there for a little while but I hated the way it felt and it started to turn yellow after only about a month. I had several other protectors I bought from Sprint and such but when I got my Commuter case I put the Otterbox protector on there and I've had it on since. My Otterbox protector was starting to get a bit scratched up so I was looking for something to replace it. I got an email from Overstock telling me that I had $10 credit so I went to look and see what they had. The protectors I got had a very good rating and I have to agree, these are the best I've had on my phone so far. They are very smooth and clear, good stiffness and thickness on the plastic so I think they'll hold up well. Best of all, only $5 for 2 of them, you really can't beat that price. I don't know if you really need a protector but I'm ultra paranoid and I just like the security of knowing it's on there.
I use one for sure but it does take away from viewing. Pretty scratched up now so I will probably replace. Not looking forward to installing and trying to get dust free, I am very picky so it takes me much time to get it right.
I did buy the Zagg Invisishield, however I never installed it. I just couldn't get it right and ended up making the screen protector look like crap.
Needless to say, after 9 months of having no "shield" I did finally get a small scratch. This is after bouncing my phone off of pavement, blacktop, hardwood floors, and carpet. The scratch is unnoticeable unless you're at the right viewing angle, and you can't feel it unless you actually search for it with your finger nail. My phone does have 2 cracks (Power button & volume down rocker) and the corners are pretty chipped.
Gotta love that Gorilla Glass.

I'm pretty picky as well. I had a couple chunks of dust under mine after installing it last night and I just used a piece of tape to lift a corner and another to get the dust out, worked great. Installation with the protectors I linked above took about 15min.

wow that pretty good i might get one if you can get as many as you want only have to pay the shipping thanks. I have one on now but it is peeling at the corners and there are so many air bubbles i hate it i am going to go bare or buy one of these
ya it does i think. pretty sure because it is very durable
I use the anti glare ones, they sort of distort a little, but my fingers glide across the screen so much easier

I got some on Amazon for 50 cents a piece. (6 pack for $3) They are the crystal clear ones, so you can't really even tell it's there. At that price, I will definitely use them. I wouldn't pay the insane prices that Zagg or some of the others charge though.

Anyone? Does the screen scratch easily? The screen is my main worry.
TPU case and no screen protector for me. Check out this thread.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1384218
Ok now that would bother the crap out of me. Maybe I should get a screen protector.
I posted this in the other thread regarding a screen protector:
I've never found a screen protector that doesn't take away from both the look and feel of the screen. This is why I don't use screen protectors. In my opinion, I'll take a few minor scratches and marks that occur from normal use over screwing up the look and feel of the screen by putting on a screen protector. If you're not happy w/ the way the screen looks and/or feels w/ the protector, then what's the point? It kind of defeats the purpose. This is the conclusion I've come to after being disappointed using screen protectors on some of my previous phones.
Also, notice that I said minor scratches, i.e., the kind you have to really look for under a bright light to see. If you're the type of person that isn't particularly careful with your phone (i.e., my wife), by all means, get a screen protector.
Just my two cents.
I've had my Galaxy Nexus for two weeks now, no case, no screen protector, no scratches.
I wouldn't mind minor scratches either, but that one looks deep. How did he do it? He doesn't say in the first post.
naked and loving it!
Have had mine since Thanksgiving and no case or screen protector. I just watch what else is in my pockets with it.
I've been using it without anything for the past 2 weeks and loving it. Touchwood
I was gonna streak at work today but i had no where to put my phone. Touch wood.

I'm totally streaking. But I definitely keep the GN away from things like keys and spare change. I liked the neoprene sleeve that came with the Nexus One. Will probably get one for the GN soon.
Ive been lucky
In the 6 years I have owned smart phones, I have never used a screen protector. But I do use cases.
Body skin and screen protector here....
Never used a case or screen protector. Never had a scratched screen. Just keep your phone pocket empty and clean.

Streaking over 2 weeks....just enjoy your phone!
I generally don't like cases as they take away from the design of the phone. I also haven't had luck with screen protectors that are worth a damn. I avoid putting it in the same pocket with my keys though or anything metal for that matter.

It's like putting plastic on the couch! Just enjoy the damn thing and keep it away from keys and change! I just got mine so will baby it for a week or two and then it will be back to business as usual!
No case and no protector. Not willing to sacrifice beauty of display or feel. I'd rather buy a new screen if I ever get to scratch this one than deal with any protector for the next year or two.
My experience has been that it is easy too scratch. Treating it exactly like my old moto cliq I've acquired 3 very minor scratches in 2 weeks. Admittedly minor... hut I'm not waiting for it become a problem, my screen protector is in the mail.

this is definitely too beautiful of a device to cover up. A case is out of the question. though I noticed a hairline scratch on the top left corner of mine out of nowhere, leading me to the conclusion that, at the very least, the coating is a weak point. I decided to go with a steinheil ultra screen protector and although it doesn't cover the whole thing, it looks and feels great. certainly eases my worries a lot more. basically, it's the minimal amount of aesthetic interference (if you can call it that) for pretty decent screen protection.

I put a protector on my phone the day I bought it but it irritates me. If anyone's running it nude, how scratch resistant does it seem to be? Is a protector really needed?

I ran my MotoDroid without a screen protector but with a good case.. The phone wouldn't have lasted the two years without the case.. but the naked screen has maybe 1 or 2 minor scratches (when viewed from an angle) after two years..
So I'll by doing the same for my GNex
I put a screen protector on my SGN and it looked horrid. After a few days of putting up with it I finally removed it. The screen definitely looks better without a screen protector IMHO. Maybe I just got a cheap screen protector, don't know.
As far as scratches, one week and no scratches. Time will tell though. I may go with a screen protector again if I can find one which doesn't seriously diminish image quality.
Anyone know of a high quality screen protector which will not degrade the image quality?
I've had my Nexus for nearly two months now. From the beginning I've been using it completely nude, both screen and the body. It has two tiny little scratches on the screen that are seen only in strong, direct lightning conditions only when the screen is off or pitch black. They are not disturbing at all when I use the phone. BTW, my misses, who's got Desire S reinforced by Gorilla Glass has some tiny scratches on the screen as well, so I don't see the point to BS about this Gorilla Glass wonder .
What's more interesting, I dropped my GNex from about 1m screen down on the ground and it survived. There are a few spots (rather then scratches) in the bottom left corner of the phone, I can see them when looking directly.
Finally, I'm gonna write some more about scratches etc on the GNex in the future because I'm gonna go nude for at least 2 years (I've got Three Insurance on it so don't bother)

I had a screen protector on my OG Droid for all of a week. Since then no one in my family has used a screen protector on any Android phone we have had:
2 OG Droid
3 Eris
2 Droid X
1 Droid Incredible
1 Thunderbolt
2 Galaxy Nexus
Not one ever had scratches on the screen. Some did have the screen break but a screen protector would have not stopped that. When I see threads where people have big scratchs on there screens I can't imagine how it happens as I keep my phone in my jeans pocket. Who knows how my 15 year old daughter keeps hers, my wife just throws hers (my old thunderbolt) in her purse (drives me nuts).
I just don't like the feel of a screen protector.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using XDA App
i stopped using screen protectors long ago. hate the damn things.. especially when i got that crap 'invisi-shield' on my Thunderbolt(hated the feel) and ended up having to get it replaced twice.
these days i just use a basic silicone case & no protectors at all. i just make sure that whatever pocket i put my phone in not to put anything else in with it(especially keys).
Had the Galaxy Nexus about two weeks now, and I use all my devices without any case and without any screen protector.
Not a single scratch as of yet. Now it is worth noting the reason I am willing to carry my devices without any protection is because I am a fanatic.
My phone never rests face down unless on a soft cloth, my phone remains in my pocket and it is NEVER in the pocket with anything else, even headphones. I also rarely drop my phones but I just find them so much more comfortable and easy to use without the extra bulk.
I really hate the feel of screen protectors on high end phones.
UPDATE: Edit, I do not however, let my wife carry hers without a screen protector because she just chucks it in her purse and I nearly die inside everytime I see it.
been without a SP for a while but finally getting one soon. ordered this one: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1414052
ordered that specifically because many people here and on reviews said that it's almost identical to the stock screen and doesn't hurt the quality at all.
i hated the screen protectors. never had any screen protectors on any of my nexus's (N1, NS, GN)
but you will need to handle it with care.
i use a pouch with it, so, when in pocket, its sort of protected. but when you do not handle with care eg while playing with it then dropped it, then i am not sure what will happen.
Screen protectors look awful. I will never put one on any of my phones.
I've had the phone since the 23rd. i largely hate screen protectors, tried one on my moto xoom and i find they tend to get dull and crappy looking very quickly.
I'm a huge fan of keeping my phones in a slip case (something like the nexus ones neoprene case) While i search for a good slip case for the nexus i've been using a sun glasses bag when it's in my pocket. So far zero scratches and tons of use.
Nevaer had screen protectors in any of my phones...

Always... that is what I use insurance for. The cost of a case and accessories is almost over half my deductible if I really messed up the phone.
No screen protector. I'd have to replace it weekly, I hate the dull, dirty and scratched look. I've yet to find a company who's screen protectors don't do that.
I've had mine since the 8th, and it goes in my pocket with the headphones. Inside jacket pocket or jeans pocket depending on what I'm doing. No scratches or other markings on the screen so far.
My SGS prior had 1 scratch from a year and a half of use and that was due to my wife putting her hand (with rings on) into my coat pocket to grab my phone. I heard the diamond scratch the glass. Serious shudder moment.

thanks for the feedback guys.

Past performance doesn't necessarily predict future outcomes.
If a minor scratch doesn't bother you, don't use a screen protector. But if you plan to sell the phone later and want the most money, obviously you should use one - you'll get used to it after a few days and not care.

True but it does help set a precedent, that the OP can use to determine if they feel comfortable enough to follow through with a naked phone or not.

While a screen protector will prevent scratches, I would edit your line above and say. "Putting a screen protector on doesn't necessarily predict future selling price." But it can't hurt.
Now to the meat of this. NO! Not everyone gets used to having a screen protector on their phone. I've tried 6-7 different screen protectors over the last two years trying to find one that replicates the feel of the glass. So far...no go. I find screen protectors to be grippy, and I hate that feel. Even ones that say they are smooth still feel grippy, and then there is the issue of having to install them. You practically need a clean room. Then the dirt and dust collects around the edges of the screen protectors and makes them stand out. I could go on, but ya not everyone gets used to them.
OCD...maybe a little. But for me, so far at least; screen protectors are a no go.
Now don't get me started on cases.
O.
I carry my GNEX in my jeans but never put keys, money etc in the same pocket. No scratches so far
No screen protector here, and no scratches yet. Never had any scratches on my Hero for 2 1/2 years so won't be using one this time either.
Used to swear by screen protectors. Couldn't use a phone without one.
Not used a screen protector since my Touch Pro 2 and never had a scratch on any of my phones since. I just stopped filling my 'phone pocket' with diamonds and the other sharp stuff I used to carry around.
Regards.
Walking down the hall today carrying my laptop and phone, wasn't even thinking and phone slipped out and dropped on the ceramic tile floor.
It has no case and no screen protector.
It fell from slightly above waist high.
When I picked up the phone, the back plate had 2 notches that were partially unseated at the top of the phone. I re-seated them and inspected the phone closely. NO DAMAGE!!
Not a single scratch on the screen and no scratches on the body, whew!
Way to go Samsung!

Or just a case since most cases have front parts to prevent screen damage.
First phone I actually use a screen protector and case on.
I came from a LG G2x and a Blackberry (personal and work). Maybe I'm freaked out about not having a fall back anymore. But the phone is thin enough that a case doesn't add too much more.

Agreed, simply because cases provide a better grip to the phone especially for such a big phone.
I had a similar situation and dropped it in the bathroom floor from my pocket. 1 or 2 notches came off the back cover. Everything else is fine.
I dropped my Nexus S on the street and result 2 quite noticeable notches on the corners , I guess the surface was pretty hard and rough. At least I was lucky enough for the screen which is without a protector results fine.
Dropped every single phone I've ever had once or twice, my Desire is destroyed, I keep it as a spare, my Hero survived with minor wear marks, my SGS2 had one tiny scratch on the screen and a few marks around the edges of the phone, my month old Galaxy Nexus so far is spotless, touch wood.
I have a very very faint half inch long scratch near my earpiece. Thinking about getting a case. Probably not, I don't like them. I still need to get the spare battery.

I'm not rocking a case either and haven't really has a serious drop or anything yet (knock on wood) but one thing I have noticed is the gray material around edge and back (not the back rubber cover) is completely terrible. The slightest of dings takes chunks out of it. Why would they use such a cheap material that has no durability at all?
Also I've see several people taking keys to their display on YouTube. Are they aware that this screen isn't Gorilla Glass? I have some very faint hairline scratches on my screen that can't be seen unless looked at certain angles but it definitely isn't scratch resistant especially considering I haven't don't anything really that would cause the scratches. Still don't even know how they got there. Don't put phone in pocket with keys or usually anything and never lay face down.

True it does not have gorilla glass but it has sammys version of it. You wont get glass scratches from keys, you get that from dirt or sand making its way into your pocket and rubbing against the screen. As far as the plastic goes, that doesnt do so well when marked with keys
My heart would have stopped if that happened. I don't get cases because I feel I'm that much more secure with them, but most cases tend to give me a better grip- which I'd want anyways. I've not gotten a screen protector yet, as I haven't found one that I like. I want one that provides scratch resistant qualities, but isn't gummy like invisible shield.
Whilst staggering home on new year's eve I dropped mine onto the road, I have two little chips on one corner but other than that, no damage. (No case, no screen protector)
I was so disappointed with myself the next day but then I realised how incredibly lucky I was that it didn't suffer any more damage, especially the screen!
This may sound dumb but if you don't have a screen protector, avoid putting the phone face down. I believe that - along with picking up the phone carelessly whilst face down contributed to my extremely small scratch.

I'll try to be as helpful as possible: Hot.
Their is no way I could feel safe sporting this phone without a screen protector, but I have noticed that after dropping it twice on concrete, there are no visible marks. Im curious.
Ive had my phone for about a year and a half now and Its flawless. I never use a case, screen protector, or holster and its flawless.
Im curious because so many of my friends break and scratch their phones (mostly iphones) and it drives me insane.
So tell me, how long have you had your phone? Any cases or protection?
No case and only a screen protector. Mine is almost a year old, the casing looks flawless except for a few high friction spots.
Beamed from my Maguro.

No case or what so ever..
The quality of the screen is a bit less than it was before.. I have a small line (white) at the bottom and top of the screen (looks like the screen moved under the glass) & the battery life is a bit decreased. (It's 13 months old) but I still love it, and see no reason to upgrade to another phone (;

I've had mine for 14mo now - no case and no screen protector. The only blemish I have is around the camera bezel because the design does not allow it to sit flat when laid on its back - something the design engineers overlooked I suppose.
I always pocket the device with nothing else in my pocket and keep it clear from clumsy people and children.

It has held up surprising well. There are a few very small scratches on the screen but nothing that I notice normally and everything else is basically like it was when I bought it.
I've dropped the phone several times (includes once on the sidewalk hard enough for the back to pop off and the battery to go flying out.)
I also spilled a mimosa on it once...
So yes I can confidently say I am very happy with the durability of this phone.
Although sadly a friend of mine who got a galaxy nexus right before verizon discontinued them (she is not a phone person) dropped hers about a month in and now her screen is shattered

I've had mine since the December of 2011. I've had an Invisible Shield on, basically since I got it, but I never use a case. I have one small scratch around the camera area, not on the lense thankfully. Other than that, it's basically flawless and I wouldn't trade it for any other phone right now.
Mine has been covered in the Samsung TPU case (OEM) offered in Verizon stores, and I have only the faintest scratch on the display. The phone is in as close to mint condition as you can get for a 1+ year old phone. Never applied protection to the display, nor will I even consider doing that.
I got my phone used a few months ago. It had a couple scratches on the bottom corner but even that is barely visible. Other than that, Its nearly mint condition. I have a case but only really use it if I feel like changing things up. Most of the time, I dont use it. I have a screen protector but only use one because I hate fingerprints on the screen. I have never broken a phone. I'm careful with my stuff.
Had mine for 14mo, the screen`s got a few scratches but nothing major and the corners of the case have some scratches and dings. Been using it without a case the whole time and without a screen protector for the last few months. Volume buttons don`t work though.
