Hi All.
Right so as the title say's this topic is about s-voice.
I used s-voice on my stock SIII and I have to say it wasn't great.
It worked but only so so.
Now I found that the version of S-Voice that was included on the leaked version of 4.2.1 was fantastic. It really worked very well.
I have since then gone back to stock and now run Sotmax and as far as I can tell the version is the same as stock.
So basically back to not great.
You can understand that I was exited to see the s-voice for the S4 and rapidly installed only to to quickly find that it's horrific.
Really isn't very good at all.:crying:
So what I've done is I've pulled the S-Voice out of the leaked 4.2.1 and installed on my SIII. Have to say I love it this is the best version of S-Voice out there in my opinion. It's also a lot bigger than the S4 version (~32MB compared with ~25MB)
Give it a try and see what you think.....
Now if I could only make it look like the S4 version......
S-Voice_From_Leaked_4.2.1.zip
Now what I can't understand is why would they release a version of S-Voice that is just no where near as good as one they have on their test bed for 4.2.1 on the S3. Unless this is some personally tweaked version from that developer....?
Any how, Included languages are:
German
English (UK)
English (US)
Spanish (Spain)
Spanish (Latin America)
French
Italian
Thai (I don't know as it looks like gibberish to me....)
I use the UK one my self so I can't say how well the others work but I would love to know.
I downloaded and installed the s4 version the day it was dumped, us version, it is a vast improvement, and works great even on 4.1.1

I'm just downloading and will provide feedback shortly. On 4.1.2 and using s-voice from the s4. I'm liking the new driving mode feature and it seems to work better than the stock s3 s-voice but too many errors for my liking and that's even speaking slow and clearly with US English
Update - this is definitely better than the stock s-voice but not seeing any noticeable difference compared to the s4 leak. Will test over the next couple of days and report back

It does support driving mode but it's not the same as the S4 version.
When in driving mode it just gives you audio event messages. That's all I think.... Wasn't a fan of driving mode on the S4 any way.

isn't it from the sIII 4.2.1 leak and not from the SVI dump or did I get that wrong?.. and I think Samsung might have already sold a few if them.. with 4.1 but still ;D
imo s-voice is completely useless anyway. seriously in which situations can you talk to your phone without looking like a retard? imagine sitting in the train and the guy next to you says every few minutes: 'turn wifi off', 'send message to Michael', 'how did xy play on the weekend'..
OK maybe the car mode might be interesting, I personally have a motorbike.. so - no s-voice.
and I also have never ever seen anyone else talking to their phones, not even those apple geeks.. maybe because I'm german and we're always at least some month behind the newest trend..
don't get me wrong, nice gimmick of samsung and thanks for spreading it here, but most of the time only to play around with

You basically answered your own question.
S-Voice is awesome while driving. You can call, text, navigate hands free. But yeah if you use it in the train you look like a lunatic.
What kind of bike do you have? I have a Thundercat.

I tried most of the possible actions.. and none of them worked really good, especially when I imagine that I would have to concentrate on my imaginal car while talking to my phone.
maybe that's because l've set it to German, might work better in English like Google now does but i don't speak English good enough to use my s-voice in english. (what would, again, look pretty stupid if everyone around speaks german
and the bike thing: also yamaha driver! officially I have to ride my xt 125 because I'm not 18 yet and 125ccm is the maximum allowed for u18s here in germany. :crying: but my dad's old xt 600 from the 80's is waiting for me to turn 18 + get the official driver license and it's f**kin awesome. 1 cylinder, nice deep 4stroke sound and enough power, especially for a 'beginner' (once again we have regulations here in germany, limited hp for 'newbies', another licence.. damn). and I'm to big (length and wide-wise) for a racing bike, so motocross it is nice to see other people around on xda with similar hobbies :good: you don't play/like rugby by chance as a British man? ;D
now back to topic, don't wanna spam this thread

Not sure on that one, I do know the S-voice I downloaded was from the s4 dump, and not the 4.2.1. Their may have been two different dumps though. I don't use it at all, but did test it just to check it out and say I've got it. I believe mind is the 10.0 release... I would check out the German on this one, but I don't speak German with any fluency what-so-ever.

I'm a fan of the driving mode for reading and sending text messages, adding reminders/calendar appointments and searching for locations using Google navigation as I travel a lot for work. I've found that all versions of s voice so far have let me down and only 70% of the time gets it right.
I used to own an iPhone 4s and have to admit that Siri is a big step above s voice but I'm glad Samsung are working to make it better and can't wait to see the improvements

just sold my EVo 3d and got an epic touch! any recommendations on roms? thanks in advance!
I'm running Starburst. ViperRom is great too. Both are actively updated at least a once a week (fixes or full updates). The former has Touchwiz, the latter has GO Launcher.
I tried every rom I could get my hands on, and Midnight ROM is definitely the best hands down (in my opinion of course). Right now I'm just running stock kernel with cwm and a stock rooted rom, also flashed the No CIQ update that's out. A few custom tweaks like running cpu profiles and the phone runs like a dream! My only complaint is the LoS issues but that doesn't seem to be affected by the kernels/roms; and I don't get it very frequently so an occasional reboot is no big deal...maybe a good thing if anything! Good luck flashing, buddy.
Starburst rom is great this is my second Samsung phone. First sprint try them all

Actually, considering how short a time it took Dexetra to build Iris, it is a very impressive app. I have the first version (different from what you can get from the market) and it is hilarious. More for fun and developed in one night!
The version on the market, released only a week later is already 100% more capable which is a pretty tremendous growth cycle. Give it a month and I bet it is on par with Siri which has been around a very long time. There are also a half dozen other options available (Voice Actions, Voice Search, Vlingo, Assistant, etc.) They are all pretty decent.

No, no accent; I was going to keep it just for the updates, but I figure its gonna take awhile until it works really well. Until then, its voice dial/vlingo/voice app
Guys "Jeannie " destroys Iris. Voice Command Plus is the paid version and has quicker responses. Its a plain interface but I haven't stumped it yet. You will probably like it better than Vlingo or Speaktoit or any of them

That will never happen. The only way JB is hitting our phone is if we do it.
I'm really thinking of going back to a Google phone. Less of the features I really want, but at least the new toys hit it first and fast.
Oh and yea Galaxy S is getting it!! But Sammy will never push it to our phones, and you all know I'm right.
i think for the most part the new notification is by far what im after camera upgrade to
Offline voice actions will be a huge help to the utility and speed of voice commands. Other than that, meh. Of course I'm excited though, and will flash anything
I'm definitely waiting for the next Nexus for my next phone purchase. It's hard to not get caught up in the GS3 hype, but its such a minor upgrade to our phones' specs......the GS3 will be many, many months before it sees 4.1.
Hope Samsung port it to the S3 fast. So we can use it. I like it really much!

I'm guessing because most people wouldn't be toting a tablet around to take pictures of other things besides themselves. With my original galaxy tab, I was surprised how well the back camera did for video but it was too easy to cover the mic with your hand when in landscape mode. Also, the official portfolio case for it covered the rear camera and led.

A little OT but all the laptops that google is using during the google IO are Macs.... LOL
So I didn't have an android phone during the froyo to gingerbread update, which from my understanding is more like this than 2.3 to 4.0. I know we have had lots of trouble with kernel source and all sorts of other issues. Was this due to the fact that it was such a big difference, and so maybe this time it would be easier for our great devs to get this going for us once code drops? Obviously we can't know for sure until then and I'm not trying to offend anyone or seem greedy, I am just curious if this is how android works, or if not.
Thanks.
That is because google banned windows a long time ago from their offices.
So, can anybody think of any good reasons why we couldn't get the new voice search and Google Now on our phones now? I personally don't understand why we would need a new operating system for that. But, I really know nothing about what goes on behind the scenes with programming and development, so I could be totally wrong. What are your thoughts?
HI folks,
I just want to know your experiences with this phone. I am planning to buy this one from Amazon.com especially for its qwerty keypad.
Please share your experiences the good, bad and ugly of this phone. Is the hardware good? radio quality? after about, 1-1.5 years is the phone durable? Particular issues, quirks.
Thank you all.

it's been a really fast phone after the nokia 5800, and I love the qwerty keyboard, but I wouldnt buy it again. Now I know that the supported up to date OS is a very important point of view, and we have problems with that, so I'd buy a nexus probably. or an s3/s4
x3 ... short answer, no don't by it.
It's sad but the bluetooth and skype issues have killed this phone.
Take a look at the Droid 4 or the Galaxy Relay 4g
I think it's nice...
I just got this phone not too long ago, and I have to say, it's pretty good.
Sure, if you are a power user, I would get soemthing more powerful, with maybe a tegra 3.
This thing is dual-core, so it runs pretty flawlessly, but I have issues with a supported kernel and overclocking it, as the battery already suns at about 105 degrees F ALL THE TIME.
It's got decent specs, and an excellent screen, but honestly, if you want something with that extra "Oomph" I would get a Note II or Galaxy SIII

I would never overclock it. I would want something fast, with a keyboard, that has reliable bluetooth. It doesn't have to be top of the line, in fact I would use this to hold me over till I can get a Galaxy S4 and then get the bluetooth keyboard for that.
No, Bluetooth and store work without issue if you are on a stock bases ROM. It is the cm based ones that have this issue.
I would be interested what other people asst finding that has better hardware for the same price.

Thanks for the response. I am aware if I get this I will be stuck with stock Ice Cream Sandwich, but I can live with that. Again its just to hold me over till I can get (i.e. afford  ) the S4, and then I would get the Minisuit bluetooth keyboard. But if I get this, no I would never put a custom ROM on it nor overclock it nor anything crazy. I would simply root it and unlock it then leave it alone.
Well you may find lite ROM to you liking. It is based on stock so Bluetooth and Skype work. It cleans up the bloat and adds a few nice features such a voodoo sound. The only issue so far with this phone is poor GPS lock time and it will not be updated any more past 4.0.4

Doh so close. How bad are we talking? A few minutes, who cares, but 15 to 30 minutes, that's bad.
Also, lite ROM based off of ICS or Jelly Bean? Thanks in advance.
Depends. Once the lock happens it is rather constant. I find it is hard to get a lock while moving. Not moving it is about 5 minutes.
In short, it would fail as a dedicated GPS but would work in a pinch.
Lite ROM is based on 4.0.4. I get the names mixed up though so not sure if that is jb or ics.

There is a fc when the other person hangs up first but it's a minor irritation that only lasts a couple seconds. Battery lasts longer and volume is much louder with out installing a custom kernel.
I used to kinda despise miui but this new v5 is making me take a second look. Per app permissions is a pretty cool thing if you got a kid. And because it looks like iOS, it takes a little getting used to for hardcore aosp types but the clean, light look is somewhat appealing. Heck, I'm even researching Xiaomi phones cus it looks like you could get one pretty cheap. Bleeding edge? Not quite but pretty good bang for the buck
That's what I think.
Yes i would love to see an updated version of TW based MIUI i tried asking one of the devs who ports it for the GT-N7000 but couldn't help. Unfortunately i own a small business and don't have time to learn how to do it myself.
I did make the changes to EmotionMIUI_V2.6_AromaEN_3.7.5 And got it to boot but with errors and of course no lte
As for the MI phones I just checked on GSM Arena they all have quad band gsm and HSDPA 850 / 1900 / 2100, no LTE
If you wish to look for your self go here http://www.gsmarena.com/xiaomi-phones-80.php
Thanks for the link.... maybe with enough interest in this thread a dev will maybe come and help....
its interesting how a dev will swoop in, make a nice miui port, work with it for awhile, then disappear...its happened several times with various phones over the years, and it appears the same thing is happenning with this phone....
I know that we shouldnt expect anything to go on forever, but its sad for us MIUI fans to get pumped when a new release comes out, then after an update or two, the dev disappears and the rom just dies...
and, I agree with Johnny, that the current 10.1 version is MUCH better than the TW version; however, it appears that after the first release, the dev working on it cant get the update to boot....
So I went with the d801 g2!! It's awesome. I just wanted to say bye to all the t989 FAM, everyone was pretty cool and helpful. See you on the other side!

It seemed like a pretty solid phone, I only played around with it for a half hour to make sure it worked.

Lol.. I mean if you really want to call it that. I'd rather have the bigger display with the same exact specs as the n5. Knock on and WiFi calling (an option I cannot live without)

Alternate method to enter recovery?
Does anyone know of a way to enter recovery other than with using the power button? Is there a way to do it through ODIN?
I installed ICS Stock ROM, but I need to be able to enter recovery to do a factory reset.
My power button is broken. I can get into download mode (pressing volume up, volume down, and then inserting usb cable).
If the phone is off, I can also get the phone to power on (by inserting power cord, feeling vibrate, and then quickly removing power cord).
But I can't get into recovery. If anyone has any creative methods, that'd be awesome!
I'm saying goodbye, as well.
After installing ROM after ROM, I never found any that "just worked". Anything 4.4-based had all kinds of busted stuff (1080p video, Netflix, etc). 4.3 had camera/gallery issues. Even with 4.1 and 4.2 (including 4.1 stock), they still seem to suffer from "vbus_present" issues forcing me to reboot any time I unplug the device.
The device froze up on me and corrupted too many photos. I tried asking the community what the "best" ROM was, and mods closed the thread.
I wanted the T989 as a tool. Not something I had to babysit.
Maybe I'll get a Moto G or whatever Motorola's new phone is.

The way I see it....ROMs made of 4.2.2 and higher may have their odd glitches... But that just life bringing android versions to phones who's official support ended. Its either accept the odd problem, or stick with last official update. In this case touch wiz 4.1.2. Which is pretty much perfect.
Flashing custom ROMs comes with the odd glitch, no matter the phone. That's just how it is.
Stock is for those that can't accept the odd issue.
Good luck with your next phone!! The moto g is nice, for its price for sure!!!

A point I should have made.....the devs work hard and for free and for fun....and share with us lucky members.
They do their best with what they have to work with....especially on android versions not even created for our device.
They deserve our respect and thanks. If what's available disappoints anyone....they should keep it to themselves or choose their words wisely.
Without the devs.... We'd have nothing at all. Especially when Google stops giving us official updates.
Be grateful.
Still loving my Herc. Carbon rom with SaberMod Uber kernel and I have no complaints...

Current T989 kitkat bugs piss me off, lol. They seem to be putting finishing touches on it, then all of a sudden they make a bigger change that opens a whole new can of worms.
My power button got stuck several months ago, so I actually opened the phone up and removed the entire thing. To turn my phone on, I plug it in with a usb chord and hold volume up/down until I enter download mode, then I cancel it.
I use an app called Quick Boot to reboot, enter recovery and so on.
Also, I kind of agree with you guys. Sure, the latest 4.4 ROMs are a little buggy, but I've found 4.3 roms to be perfect, in terms of stability.
Got my T989 last november from a friend, second android device I had but the first to get serious with. Also tried to check for newer devices like that LG G2 but the chance for me to get a new one is far less than you can do.

I lucked out. I complained enough to tmobile about the screen blobs and lines from the amoled displays that they kept sending me as refurbs, wrote the CEO an email, then they called and agreed to send me a GS3 LTE, and let me keep my s2, so I immediately sold both phones and got the g2 new.
