So I am going to be leaving the HTC Sensation 4G, and considering the GS4 is going to be pretty much like the GS3 (and GS3 are getting GS4 updates) I went ahead and ordered mine just now! Should be shipping sometime this week!
So.. I was running CM10.1 AOSP 4.2.2 Jellybean Kang on my Sensation, I am currently browsing all the Roms available now, what do you all suggest which Rom would be awesome and why? I am all about Battery and Multitasking.
It really depends mate. Thing is if I had wanted vanilla android or aokp I would've bought the nexus device but I chose S3 because of all the extra TouchWiz features as well. I'm running latest version of MIUI and it works perfectly but I know sooner or later I'll go back to using stock based rom. I would suggest sticking with Sammy based roms from the likes of Omega roms and Android Revolution HD, especially if you want some of the features from the S4.
Also reason I suggest the 2 roms above is because they are constantly updated and have active support from the community.

Alright cool cool, would be nice if I had someone to help me root it also once I receive the phone.
edit looked up rooting methods they are MAD EASY WOW!
TW is overrated and looks like a ridiculous cartoon IMO, and all the S-whatever features are just gimmicks right now, though some people love it.
If you loved CM 10.1, its on our phones only official right now the nightlies are a little unstable since the upgrade to the 3.4 Linux kernel but they are working the bugs out. 10.1 M2 will be most stable. No learning curve that way
Battery life is unbelievable with Ktoonsez kernel. 3/14 version works with M2. Take a look at the thread, its got some good info on the governor, I/O scheduler, undervolt, and other settings.
And with our phones, the 2GB ram and fast CPU, its no problem for multitasking. I even ran my phone at 1.02Ghz and it still responded just fine with all sorts of stuff open.
I agree I dislike Touch Wiz I loved CyanogenMod since his G1 days lol, so I think I may take a look at that. Although This Smooth Liquid looks pretty interesting.
I like the PAC-Man ROM and using the Ktoonsez kernel he released today.
Look into sons of android ROM too. Insane battery life.

Once I get my device it's between PAC-Man or Liquid Smooth, if those two aren't good then CM or a stable MIUI (if there is one available for this phone)

Seems a bit too plain for my taste.
So I always thought our devices had wireless charging capabilities but I see that you need a certain special back cover, etc. guess I am going to do that mod I found online lol

Otterbox always good. Look in accessory thread they review and suggest everything in one thread. I use twrp... And flash through Odin.. Easiest for me and convenient
Oh and I found it much easier to root at 4.0,4. Also you can Odin flash using root 66 which come prerooted

I started with CWM, but after switching to TWRP I wouldn't go back.
I used the Root66 method to root the phone - and have used it show a friend how to root their phone and used it to return to stock rooted and get the latest update. Never had an issue, I think it's pretty easy.
I used Wicked for a bit and might go back - I am just a noob and have to work out some issues I had in transferring things over first.
Not sure about screen protectors - mine had one on it when I bought it on eBay and it was so good I've just left it. I just have a $3 TPU and silicone bumper on it and a skin - protects from scratches at least. I've dropped it once or twice with no issue, too.
Is the Root66 method for T-Mobile? I only see three rooting methods and those are by MrRobinson, Chainfire, and mskip here http://www.xda-developers.com/android/how-to-root-the-samsung-galaxy-s-iii-xda-developer-tv/

Congrats on your phone. I well suggest any of the 4.1.1 root66 because it's jb... I prefer ja baseband because it works better in my area.
And like what the quote said if you want twrp download goo if cwr rim manager. Lol honestly simply going to the recivery website will tell you how to download. So far your research is on point. You can try both recovery and see which you prefer. Twrp may not be pretty but it's sick and far more friendly and with more option

Hey all, long time lurk, first actual post here though. I used to jump rom to rom back when I had the original Droid on VZW, but that was so long ago, at least in terms of Android Development anyhow. So ffwd to today, I've had my E4GT now for perhaps 2 months, and I've already rooted it, flashed a Team Rouge Recovery to it (cause it was the latest I think), and am on a stock GB EL29 Rom, and I think an EL26 Kernel.
Now, I know that things have complicated so much more since the last time I was savy doing all this, so I'm vague and still learning about all the different things that can be switched in and out, here and there. But I've been too caught up with all of the recent ICS issues that were presented with the leaks and the actual release. I've since found a rom that I'm comfortable with, AOKP 7-13 , but I'm not trying to mess anything up despite having done nothing but read for the past month and a half about what to do and not to do. One thing I am absolutely sure about is that I came into this scene at a horrible time lol, things have been changing as I read them!!
Now! With this rom, is it completely nessasary to use this specific recovery, CWM5? And, is this the recovery in question? If not, please point me in the correct direction.
And "the normal route" that is mentioned in the first information post in that AOKP thread, would that be the flashing of an ICS rom from a GB rom to prevent the emmc problem that was happening, even though such this rom has that feature removed (at least if I read it correctly)
I'm not stupid nor am I completely horrible at following directions, but after feeling like getting the run around just by attempting to piece together information from different sources, it would really just put my mind at ease, and stop the headaches lol, if someone whom this wasn't so...new to could provide me an outline to follow, or at least do this, don't do that pointers.
I know this is long, and thanks for reading. I'm just hoping to get back into the scene, I hate being anxious and not know, <-- ie. my current state

Okay, first of all, AOKP already comes with a recovery (TWRP). However, if you would rather use clockworkmod then you can use this: http://tinyurl.com/7ysnylg Also, in any case where you want to flash a different ICS ROM, I suggest you use el26 CWM.
I'm aware of the TWRP that is included with the AOKP rom (listen to me, slinging around slang like a pro, lol) I only felt I needed to use CWM5 because it specified it in the instal instructions for the rom.
I would assume that I would need the CWM just for switching ICS's in the future, if that does turn out to be what I'll be doing, seeing as how ICS looks like it'll be nothing but improvements from here on oot.

Ooooh I get you! yes its best and suggested to flash any new ics rom from el29 stockrooted
Odin el29 stock rooted
Then flash el26 cwm kernel
Reboot to recovery then flash the ics rom
If your already on an ics rom MY method is to always Odin el29 stockrooted

Righteo, that helps some. Now I just gotta back everything up. I made my original backup once I first rooted, I shouldn't need to make additional, right? You can find rooted, stock GB roms to go back to...right? Lol its late...I need another doobie :cyclops:
EDIT:
Actually, I'm already halfway through that. I am at el29, stock rooted. And I have the el26 kernel. I just need the CWM recovery, then the actual piece de resistance, the rom. Right Krazy?

I was actually in a similar situation as you. I came from flashing on the HTC Hero(which is running AOKP at the moment, and I'm soon going to flash the new Jellybean rom that was just released for it), and that phone is completely different from the E4GT. Although i didn't start flashing from GB, I started on ICS.
I actually went from FF18 Stock Rooted to AOKP milestone 6 Friday the 13th using Agat's recovery from source, and it's a safe recovery, without problems. I am now loving AOKP

The yellow triangle is Samsung way of telling the techs an unofficial kernel was flashed to the phone. People use a jig or if your on ICS you can use triangle away to reset the binary counter.

Thanks. I am looking to flash for the first time on this phone also, just got it a week ago. I came from the Vibrant which was so much more simple. Another question if you don't mind. I am on the now running stock OTA ICS. Do I just need to Odin a safe kernel then flash which ever ROM I choose or are the ICS kernels that are built from source now safe to flash from?
The kernels built from the source are safe. Agats kernel with recovery. You can flash that kernel being on stock FF18 and flash from there.
Edit: the agats kernel I have is for TW roms. So just do some research on what kernels you can use. (Cm9 and AOKP use different kernels.)

I have done a ton reading, just stuck in the old ways of my old phone and simplicity of flashing on it. It was all a little confusing because even some of the updated ROM threads still say flash back to EL26 first, which is also a TW kernel isn't it? But then I read in another place it is safe to use Agats kernel built from source and so on. I was a little shocked at considerably less custom ROM options on this phone compared to the Vibrant. Granted the Vibrant has been around longer, but there were so many more options at the start which kind of leads me to think it is just that much more work to do that on this phone. By no means is this a negative remark toward any developer, just sort of expected a lot more because it is a nice phone. I was looking to flash the Platinum version of this rom http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1712362 since I love the color red. But, thanks for help. I really appreciate it when someone actually gives an answer to a question instead of bash people new to a phone.

Your correct only desktop triggers the yellow triangle.
Also just my steps to flashing roms 4 the e4gt
1. odin stock el29 rooted
2. flash the el26 cwm kernel (I provided on a few post back)
3. boot into recovery!
Flash what ever you want!
If you want to flash something else repeat those step! As you venture on you will get the hang of things! I hope!

Paranoid is a great ROM but some things are just a little to small for my tastes. But if I had a Galaxy Note then Paranoid would be the one for sure. But still my question wasn't answered, not getting smart, just looking for an answer...Do I need to flash back to EL26 or 29 before flashing an ICS ROM, or can I use the new safe kernels built from source? I think I need to be held by the hand on my first one.

You should be good from one of the safe kernels from source. I used Agat's recovery from source to flash AOKP from stock FF18 with no problems, did the normal factory reset instead of one of those format all zips. Not a problem with it. It should be safe to do as many factory resets/data wipes as you want from what I understand.

The Hercules 4.1.2 leak has not been leaked. So far all kernels and ROMs that claim to be 4.1.2 official are based off Skyrocket. Until we get our leak Skyrocket is our only hope.

I am looking for a stable ROM with tethering capabilities. I would also not mind something with a flashy UI. Do you guys have any recommendations for this?
If you try cyanogenmod, make sure you're updated to the latest firmware before flashing. You need the newest bootloader.
It sounds like you make be interested in AOKP roms since they have many unique features as opposed to pure vanilla android.

Currently I am running JB 4.1.1 I believe 4.1.2 is out but AT&T hasn't released the update yet so I have not been able to do it yet. I mean I think I could flash it, but I would rather just flash something different rather than flashing an update like that....

I was on 4.1.1 when I flashed to cyanogenmod and it's still working fine. You should be good to go as long as you're on Jelly bean.

I am thinking of giving my SGII to my dad who is an absolute novice when it comes to smartphones.
Last phone he used was a no-frills phone (Nokia Symbian no touch screen)!!
I am currently running PAC man v24 for myself but I was wondering which ROM should I flash for him which would be super STABLE and easy to use for somebody's first touch screen phone?
All suggestions welcome!
Thanks in advance!!

Use CM10.0 Stable.
If he's a novice I'd just stick to stock

I'm about to give me girlfriend my S2. What's a good stock ROM with no addons but with root.
Sent from my SGH-T999 using Tapatalk 4 Beta
It's probably just as easy to root yourself as it is to flash a custom Rom. Then I recommend debloating how you see fit. Good luck.
Sent from XDA app
I wouldn't put a custom rom on someone else's phone. Root for him if you want to, but if he won't install a custom rom on his own you will be locked into endless tech support.
That said, what rom might be appropriate depends on the desired features. What does he want from the phone that the stock rom won't provide?
Just to clarify, rooting and flashing rom are two different things, each doable independently. If all you want is root (to remove bloatware, for example) just root and leave the stock firmware in place.
Go for stock

Kernel
I tried flashing CM10.0 on my T-Mobile SGS2, but couldn't get past the CM splash screen. Do I need to use ODIN to flash an updated kernel? If so, where can I find the right .tar file?
Jedimind tick 5 is fine
Stay Stock
As someone who has tried broadening people's horizons..DON'T do it. Keep it stock...maybe consider rooting it. You'll end up in tech support hell and hearing them complain constantly and attributing ever quirk to the fact you "broke" their phone.
+1 to sticking to stock. Of all the endless flashing I've been doing stock is the least laggy, not the general UI, the non stock ROMs all seem to have a laggy camera and Gallery.
Hi all, my name is Mike and this my first post. I have recently rooted my S3 with Odin and CFA. I would like to choose a ROM and try out different themes, but don't really know where to start. Do you have to install a ROM to choose different themes? Sorry for the noob questions. Thanks in advance.

Welcome to XDA my friend!! Alright first off themes and ROMs are two completely different things. Themes are just skins you can swap in and out on your phone without changing any software. ROMs replace phone software with newer versions. If you would like to get a theme I suggest downloading this app called Themer by MyColorScreen. For ROMs you will need a custom recovery like ClockworkMod or TWRP. I am currently using CWM (ClockworkMod). Using the CWM recovery you can "flash" roms (basically installing them). I am currently running 4.4 QuantumROM by PwnCakes. It is beautiful!! If you would like to theme go with the Themer app but if you wanna go further than just reply here!!

If you want to start out with themes go to the Play Store and ckeck out Colbalt themes by dustinb. They come in many colors for cm 9 & 10. I also liked killer blue, has nice graphics. If you are going to flash roms use the CWM recovery. Not as pretty as TWP but TWP is not compatable with 4.4. Also i am currenty favor the PAC man rom. Nice, fast and stable. It is a 4.3 rom. I have tried a few 4.4 roms but a little unstable for a daily driver. Also.if you start with the PAC rom it is a hybrid and has several varieties built in and has tons of options to play with.
Thank you both for the help. I will probably just start out with different themes until I understand ROMs a little more. :good:
Rooted Need to get CWM
Hi everyone,
Complete Noob here. Just rooted my I747-M AFTER getting 4.3 OTA using Mr. Robinson's root method! Don't know what to do after this step.
How do I get CWM? Can I flash it through Odin?
Also is it possible for me to get CM 11? I really don't like the Samsung OS.
Thank you so much in advance,
A Canadian User stuck with 4.3 OTA

Hey there, first off you are on 4.3 OTA. So if anything goes wrong you may not be able to revert back to stock, it comes down to your bootloaders. Also go on over and check out QuantumRom by PwnCakes. It is 4.4 and is just beautiful. To get CWM go to the play store and download the cwm recovery app.
Thanks for the Response

Hey,
Thanks for replying. So I can't get the Recovery App because it does not support my phone (AT&T). So I ended up using terminal and the .img file to get CWM onto my phone. So is it possible to get CM 10.2 then?
Will a release come out later allowing me to revert to stock? In the meantime can you walk me through CM?
Thanks so much from this hopeless noob.
First off, welcome to XDA. Like everyone else has said, Quantum is the way to go. For good themes, Mianogen and Gem Flat are my favorite. There's a free version of Mianogen and a paid, and for Gem Flat, it's $1.88, but well worth it. If you wanna give it a shot, custom icon packs are also really nice. Mianogen comes with its own icons, but hands down, Nox by Kovdev is the best with 1000s of really nice icons.

The app for CWM is called ROM Manager, for now, I don't know about the 4.3 update since I've been on Quantum for a few months. What would you like to know about CM? Its the easiest ROM to learn to use and is close to vanilla, while still being useful.

This post makes absolutely no sense. First you mention themes for a custom rom, which the op and question at hand obviously have no experience with. Secondly blindly stating that TWRP doesn't work with 4.4 is beyond ridiculous seeing as I just flashed Beanstalk 4.4 today just fine with TWRP 2.6.1.1. It is wonderful that you are trying to help someone with a problem or question, but i makes me sick when people casually throw out advice without any regard to the issue at hand or the ramifications of their words.

I Somewhat agree, IIRC, TWRP became compatible with 4.4 about a week or so after 4.4's release, right? As choosing one or the other, I've never even tried TWRP, but I've never had any issues with CWM, so I'm happy. And as for the ROM, I think the simpler it is, the easier it is to get used to. Sometimes having hundreds of customizations can be a bit overwhelming.

Personally i was using CWM recovery when it was the only option besides stock, and it always did a fine job at what it was intended to do. In the last year or so i started using TWRP solely for the purpose of its free touch based UI. Yes you can find CWM touch on the net for free, but they are asking for payment for it so i opted out. Both work great at what they do, and although one or the other may lag a bit from time to time keeping up with changes in the android world, as fast as things move these hiccups are to be expected.
