Hi all, my name is Mike and this my first post. I have recently rooted my S3 with Odin and CFA. I would like to choose a ROM and try out different themes, but don't really know where to start. Do you have to install a ROM to choose different themes? Sorry for the noob questions. Thanks in advance.

Welcome to XDA my friend!! Alright first off themes and ROMs are two completely different things. Themes are just skins you can swap in and out on your phone without changing any software. ROMs replace phone software with newer versions. If you would like to get a theme I suggest downloading this app called Themer by MyColorScreen. For ROMs you will need a custom recovery like ClockworkMod or TWRP. I am currently using CWM (ClockworkMod). Using the CWM recovery you can "flash" roms (basically installing them). I am currently running 4.4 QuantumROM by PwnCakes. It is beautiful!! If you would like to theme go with the Themer app but if you wanna go further than just reply here!!

If you want to start out with themes go to the Play Store and ckeck out Colbalt themes by dustinb. They come in many colors for cm 9 & 10. I also liked killer blue, has nice graphics. If you are going to flash roms use the CWM recovery. Not as pretty as TWP but TWP is not compatable with 4.4. Also i am currenty favor the PAC man rom. Nice, fast and stable. It is a 4.3 rom. I have tried a few 4.4 roms but a little unstable for a daily driver. Also.if you start with the PAC rom it is a hybrid and has several varieties built in and has tons of options to play with.
Thank you both for the help. I will probably just start out with different themes until I understand ROMs a little more. :good:
Rooted Need to get CWM
Hi everyone,
Complete Noob here. Just rooted my I747-M AFTER getting 4.3 OTA using Mr. Robinson's root method! Don't know what to do after this step.
How do I get CWM? Can I flash it through Odin?
Also is it possible for me to get CM 11? I really don't like the Samsung OS.
Thank you so much in advance,
A Canadian User stuck with 4.3 OTA

Hey there, first off you are on 4.3 OTA. So if anything goes wrong you may not be able to revert back to stock, it comes down to your bootloaders. Also go on over and check out QuantumRom by PwnCakes. It is 4.4 and is just beautiful. To get CWM go to the play store and download the cwm recovery app.
Thanks for the Response

Hey,
Thanks for replying. So I can't get the Recovery App because it does not support my phone (AT&T). So I ended up using terminal and the .img file to get CWM onto my phone. So is it possible to get CM 10.2 then?
Will a release come out later allowing me to revert to stock? In the meantime can you walk me through CM?
Thanks so much from this hopeless noob.
First off, welcome to XDA. Like everyone else has said, Quantum is the way to go. For good themes, Mianogen and Gem Flat are my favorite. There's a free version of Mianogen and a paid, and for Gem Flat, it's $1.88, but well worth it. If you wanna give it a shot, custom icon packs are also really nice. Mianogen comes with its own icons, but hands down, Nox by Kovdev is the best with 1000s of really nice icons.

The app for CWM is called ROM Manager, for now, I don't know about the 4.3 update since I've been on Quantum for a few months. What would you like to know about CM? Its the easiest ROM to learn to use and is close to vanilla, while still being useful.

This post makes absolutely no sense. First you mention themes for a custom rom, which the op and question at hand obviously have no experience with. Secondly blindly stating that TWRP doesn't work with 4.4 is beyond ridiculous seeing as I just flashed Beanstalk 4.4 today just fine with TWRP 2.6.1.1. It is wonderful that you are trying to help someone with a problem or question, but i makes me sick when people casually throw out advice without any regard to the issue at hand or the ramifications of their words.

I Somewhat agree, IIRC, TWRP became compatible with 4.4 about a week or so after 4.4's release, right? As choosing one or the other, I've never even tried TWRP, but I've never had any issues with CWM, so I'm happy. And as for the ROM, I think the simpler it is, the easier it is to get used to. Sometimes having hundreds of customizations can be a bit overwhelming.

Personally i was using CWM recovery when it was the only option besides stock, and it always did a fine job at what it was intended to do. In the last year or so i started using TWRP solely for the purpose of its free touch based UI. Yes you can find CWM touch on the net for free, but they are asking for payment for it so i opted out. Both work great at what they do, and although one or the other may lag a bit from time to time keeping up with changes in the android world, as fast as things move these hiccups are to be expected.

I am thinking of giving my SGII to my dad who is an absolute novice when it comes to smartphones.
Last phone he used was a no-frills phone (Nokia Symbian no touch screen)!!
I am currently running PAC man v24 for myself but I was wondering which ROM should I flash for him which would be super STABLE and easy to use for somebody's first touch screen phone?
All suggestions welcome!
Thanks in advance!!

I'm about to give me girlfriend my S2. What's a good stock ROM with no addons but with root.

It's probably just as easy to root yourself as it is to flash a custom Rom. Then I recommend debloating how you see fit. Good luck.
Sent from XDA app
I wouldn't put a custom rom on someone else's phone. Root for him if you want to, but if he won't install a custom rom on his own you will be locked into endless tech support.
That said, what rom might be appropriate depends on the desired features. What does he want from the phone that the stock rom won't provide?
Just to clarify, rooting and flashing rom are two different things, each doable independently. If all you want is root (to remove bloatware, for example) just root and leave the stock firmware in place.
Go for stock

Kernel
I tried flashing CM10.0 on my T-Mobile SGS2, but couldn't get past the CM splash screen. Do I need to use ODIN to flash an updated kernel? If so, where can I find the right .tar file?
Jedimind tick 5 is fine
Stay Stock
As someone who has tried broadening people's horizons..DON'T do it. Keep it stock...maybe consider rooting it. You'll end up in tech support hell and hearing them complain constantly and attributing ever quirk to the fact you "broke" their phone.
+1 to sticking to stock. Of all the endless flashing I've been doing stock is the least laggy, not the general UI, the non stock ROMs all seem to have a laggy camera and Gallery.
does anyone talking about GT-S6810 Galaxy Fame.? how to rooting, custom rom, etc.

Hi,
after years with different versions of Cyanogen I'm so used to it that I'm really a little worried that noone ported it for the Galaxy Fame.
Rooting is easy with motochopper so apps lite Titanium are working but I'm really missing some of the CM goodies.
Or any other ROM that has more customizations available.
Would be great if a coder could go for it

Rooting with the motochopper and installing the clockworkmod recovery goes very smoothly and easily if you follow the instructions. At that stage you at least have the benefits of being rooted such as Titianium Backup and being able to create a clockworkmod recovery.
It is a bit frustrating not being able to find any customer overclock/undervolt kernels and a nice juicy Cyanogen custom rom for it, but hopefully it will come in time.
Hey guys. Just wanted to know if there's any progress going on with custom roms??
Thanks for any info.
Aparently no activity for this terminal, guess many of us have to buy another model.
hi i have been reading all these galaxy fame threads and searching further a-field for any detail too on a new rom, really interested in tweaking one myself but being a newbie im not sure how to get the standard one in zip format to start working with and altering, can anyone help me with that part so then i can start tweaking it a bit to test please?
cheers in advance

I rooted my fame with motochopper and it was super easy (rooting it with this automatically installs supersu aswell which is handy), then root checker to test that rooting worked, (i deleted root checker afterwards).
i put on titanium backup which is a very good app, and helps alot, and helps to get rid of unwanted apps and widgets.
i also used pimp my rom which is quite a nifty app, but can cause allsorts of problems if you tweak too much, i did get it running better than normal after changing settings several times.
i couldnt get the clockwork mod stuff working to be honest.

You can flash cwm from my thread (check latest posts) and make a backup. After that you can give it a try.
I suppose that it works because those terminations are most of region codes or something eg, B for Brasil, L for Latin and P for the nfc version. But the boards are the same...
Cheers!:good:
I'm going to try this... Soon. Thanks!
:fingers-crossed:
corsicanu, ok now i can confirm, you rom is compatible with L series, so i done your tutorial, installed CWM, from the right post, and them the costom rom....alas it still a "stock rom", is very stable and very lightweith compared with the provider rom. so, kudos to you, now, is time to test and to help in the case i find a bug......thank you so mutch for this, galaxy fame deeded it so mutch i'll keep in touch when somethin happends.
Good CPU tuner
Thanks for the Modded rom but can anyone tell me of a good CPU tuning app?
I did this ROM if they want to try.

Hi Everyone,
As the title says I am a noob to rooting and have been researching the various roots, kernels, roms and add on packs, and some answers on what would be the best package for my phone to accomplish the results of what I would like to do,
My Phone Specs:
Samsung Galaxy SII
SGH-T989 (T-Mobile)
4.1.2 (Android Version)
3.0.31-1003885 (Kernel Version)
What I would like to accomplish is remove a bunch of bloatware that came with phone (mainly all of the T-Mobile bloat)...and I would like to connect my Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 Tablet to the phone and be able to use the phones data connection as a wifi connection via usb tethering.
There it is, let the feast begin...

This link will help you how to root. Before you click on it and follow the steps, when you get to step 13, skip to step 18, and then go back to step 14, but skip 18 this time around. This makes a nandroid backup of your ROM (Recovery Menu > Backup).
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2195283
After you've rooted, download "Root Browser" or something similar to that from the Play Store.
After starting Root Browser up, browse to system/app. Then there will be a load of apps there. Simply click on it and select uninstall.
Be sure to know what you're uninstalling. If you mess up, just restore from the backup you made earlier in recovery.
As for your second option, I'm not sure how to help you with that, sorry!
Good luck!
EDIT: I found a person you had a problem while he was rooting. This thread will take you there and show you he solution as well

CyanogenMOD is probably still the biggest, and if you're new to custom ROMS and rooting, it helps to be able to Google for answers. I see Jedi around a bunch here too, so you'd probably be okay getting help here, but I don't know much about it (I stick with CM). The latest out is CM 10.1 (which is Android 4.2.2).
Another step (once you get confident with using the various ROM/rooting tools) to fine-tuning your phone is updating your radio, and there's an excellent thread with the radios listed for the T989 here.

Yup he's right CM is the biggest in custom ROMs but you can start off with the ROMs based on stock like Jedi, Infamous, & Northern Touch, etc.
Then after you become comfortable with flashing you can move onto AOSP ROMs.

It's not any more complicated. Don't worry about odex and stuff. Just stay in the development threads here and flash what you like. Not trying to be mean here but these types of threads are not necessary. Just make a nandroid and flash away and see what best fits your needs. Each rom is subject to opinion. I use slimfast and have had no issues with it.

I keep asking questions, and you give me other replies rather than answers... If might be straightforward and easy for you. and maybe screwing around with a $350 phone is no issue for you.. but me.. not so much.
"In theory you should be fine if you do dirty flash from another 4.3 rom such as DN3 v1.0 or SN10
We recommend TWRP 2.6.3.1 to flash this rom.
You need 4.3 boot loader.
Have both TWRP and latest CWM on your external SD Card along with Ditto Note 3.1.1
Flash TWRP 2.6.3.1, go into Wipe and slide to do the Factory Reset."
This is not straight forward to me.. since I have no idea if I have a 4.3 bootloader - says I HAVE TO HAVE ONE.
TWRP is at 2.7 now .. is there a reason he says to use 2.6.3.1??? on a rom that was updated 3 days ago??
These are the things that bother me.. I am not interested in bricking my phone.
If you dont want to help.. fine, But explanations for the terms used above are not coming up in searches, unless I want to read a ton of threads.. so I thought someone might answer for me.

If that's what the developer says to use then use it. I would say he knows why to use 2.6.3.1 but that's not really important. Samsung phones are very hard to brick if you follow the directions. I'm no expert dude, all I do is follow the directions in the OP. If you do that you will be fine. What were you running prior to slim fast? If you're not sure you have the bootloader you can just flash it again.

Good evening everyone. I recently got this phone from the Black Friday deal at Best Buy for 80$ and rooted and did all of that without much problem. I installed the Wicked ROM without any issues, and tested it out but I prefer AOSP. But when I flash Cyanogen or Bliss, I lose all of the mobile data , the baseband, here I include a screenshot. I have flashed a stock ROM once again, activated it again without any problem, but when I try to flash an AOSP ROM again I lose everything. Is there anything I can do about that? I have searched the forums and Google and found no solutions. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Did you check to make sure that the md5 matched? Anytime I've had that happen either the md5 didn't match, or I needed to use a different kernel. My Goto kernel for AOSP ROMs has been BMS.

Thanks for the tip, tried flashing Cyanogenmod with that kernel and the same thing happens, I lose all of the settings related to the Baseband, Modem and IMEI. I checked the md5 and it matches completely. I have no idea what is happening. For now I settled into the Conquest Singulalirty ROM which provides an ASJOP look but on offical firmware. But still I would like to know how to solve this problem so if anyone has any tips that would be greatly appreciated.
Is your phone the L710T model by any chance? I had the same problem with every rom I tried EXCEPT for Gummy 3.0. For some reason Gummy 3.0 recognizes my baseband/modem but if I try Gummy 4.0 or any other AOSP rom, no baseband.

Flash the file here: http://androidforums.com/threads/mo...apn-fix-wip-cm-aosp-4-4-x.840298/#post6516416
It will modify necessary files in the system to allow you to connect. Also, dial ##72786# to reactivate after flashing. That all worked for me on my Virgin S3 running Carbon. Good luck!
The SPH-L710T is what was on sale at BestBuy for $80 (as I found out after running into a similar problem), and it's a pain in the ass. It seems that TW ROMs are the only ones that don't break the radio... and the M10 snapshot of CM11 apparently (except rotation is backwards). I'm looking for a fix as well.
It seems that all of this can be fixed by a custom kernel, but there's no AOSP/CM kernel (that I know of) that fixes both.
I wish I knew something about kernel development...

That is exactly the one that I have, the 80$ Best Buy from Black Friday. Yeah, I tried what metalhead131 said and it did not work. Hmmm, M10 snapshot worked for you? I will try it out them to see how it goes. In what way did it break the rotation? It does not rotate or is it inaccurate? It is a pain in the ass that we have so many ROMS available but we can't use them. I have been using the Conquest Singularity by Moon Knight. The one that is here in XDA is kinda of outdated but if you Google it you will find his blog with the latest update. He created an AOSP looking ROM but it is TW underneath. That combined with Gravity Box has satisfied me for now, but I hate no being able to flash AOSP ROMS. I know nothing about kernel development, but if someone wants to help with this I can provide anything they need in order to fix this problem with this T version of the phone.
I will try to take the kernel of the M10 and flash it with another ROM to see if the rotation works. I will update as soon as I do that.

Yeah, the radio worked with the M10 snapshot. I was able to get the latest version of ParanoidAndroid to work with the M10 snapshot kernel as well.
When I say rotation is broken I mean when you hold it sideways, it rotates the wrong way, so it's upside down.

Excellent. Thanks for the good news! That doesn't bother me that much, so I will do that with the Bliss ROM that I wanted to install. I will keep investigating and trying things to see if we can fix the rotation issue. I will keep the thread updated.
Semi-Fix for the rotation issue on the M10 kernel.
After checking some apps out, I found one that worked well for the rotation problem using AOSP ROMS on the troublesome SPH-L710T. The app is called Adaptive Rotation Lock and is available for free on the Play Store. What it does is that a little button pops up everytime you rotate your phone, and if you don't click that button the screen will not rotate. So once you put your phone horizontallly, click on the button that pops up to allow the phone to rotate upside-down, then rotate the phone so it is not upside-down anymore, but do not click the button, so it stays in the correct rotation. It is a little cumbersome, but it beats always being upside down while using the phone horizontally! I think this is a good option while we find out how to fix this issue in the kernel.

Greeting kdude63. Thanks to your tips I was able to test many roms and as you settled on Paranoid Android. The only problem I have right now is that intermittently point I lose cell coverage for like 2 minutes, but then I get it back. Does that happen on your phone?
I have also tried many kernels to see if I find another one that works but no go. I am still using the M10 boot.img. Have you found another one that works?
And thanks for helping out with the ODIN tar for this phone! It makes me feel a lot more safe when I am experimenting.

I don't currently use PA or CM as my daily driver, so I don't know. (I don't like dealing with the rotation issues)
I was testing some other kernels earlier, none of them worked before I got careless and accidentally flashed an i9300 kernel, so I can't use my phone for the time being.
Cnexus and several others have posted debrick images and stock ROMS for various versions of the s3. Good luck debricking

The debrick image for the T model was just barely posted last week in Android Forms....and there is a thread in the questions section here on XDA that has it linked

Yep, I flashed it normally. Using Philz I got the Wicked 8 zip file and a couple of the addons that are available without any problems but since I don't like the Touchwiz UI too much I am currently running Conquest. Maybe try the full Wicked 8 zip? I did not try the barebones, but I can confirm that Wicked 8 works on the T model. It has the rotation issue but a couple of post ago I described how to get around that. Let me know if it works!

i was finally able to flash bare-bones i had to flash the updated kernel i used for Conquest beta 10
I'm glad! At least we can use Touchwiz based ROMs while we can find a way to create a kernel that is completely compatible with the T model. Is your rotation working correctly?

Yes rotation is working and with the next few updates on CM side they will be fully working on the T model cause CM already updated a fix for the T model
I got spooked when the baseband disappeared and rotation was not working. Went back to stock. Of course you also seem to need the special 2.7 twrp in order to mount system. But the price was right.
