Epic 4G Touch - Constantly Rebooting! - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

Hey guys,
I purchased this phone today, went home and immediately rooted the phone.
Everything went fine, until I tried flashing a custom recovery than the problem occurred,
I'm on a FL24 basebad with 4.0.4, and every time my phone boots 10 seconds later it restarts.
What's going on?
I rooted the phone with Odin, once rooted I installed mobile Odin and flashed a customer "Kernel / Recovery" now the phone constantly reboots.

Install the stock kernel.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda premium

Well the kernel I flashed was 0.4.0, I heard that one has reboot issues so I flashed 0.3.0 and it's working great.
The only thing I can't figure out now is how to flash CWM, keeps taking me to the download screen when booting into "recovery".

To boot to recovery
Vol up plus power and hold
Once the splash screen shows, release power and continue to hold Vol up.
You will get to recovery.

I must not have been holding it long enough, appreciate the reply.
How come E4GT ROMS are so large in size, back when I had an EVO and Optimus roms were about 100MB, E4GT are about 500mb?

Well sounds like the recovery was either flashed wrong or is defective for whatever reason..
Here is how to root that version by qb77king. He is very good http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gqmKN2ewatk&feature=youtube_gdata_player.....
here is a video for the recovery http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kb63ldWtnoM&feature=youtube_gdata_player
So I'd like to help but need to know more info to go by. Did you enable USB debugging when you flashed the recovery? Anyways go ahead and go to stockroms.net. there you can find a stock ROM to flash your phone with unless its virgin or boost.
I recommend just getting stock jellybean or wild for the night cyanogen.. I know you just bought it but I can tell you its worth it ICS is horrible,Too many problems. You can actually find a jellybean ROM that is already rooted when u flash it.. Anyways download the android root toolkit from the market... This will save your phone's root

Hey Trytohoaxme. So as of right now there is no cmw for ICS. There is Agat recovery which is based off of cwm that is for either a ICS ROM or jelly bean ROM. I have cmw that is a jingerbread kernal that interfaces with CyanogenMod 10.1 which has 4.2.2 jellybean. If you flash clockworkmod it won't work with a stock rom your phone won't be able to boost up..

Who's conceited?
I'm pretty sure he's just trying to help and avoid misinformation, no need to get offended, bud... And the op stated the issue was already resolved.
He never asked about cwm specifically, just a custom recovery. On TW ICS I've used Agat's, Ruj's, and Slesh's kernels/recoveries without issue. There's really no need for EL26/CWM tar unless you want to play it safe (which i do) going from TW to AOSP or vise versa.
And yes stock TW ROMs are huge. AOSP ROMs end up around 240 megs (give or take) including Gapps.

Well when people like you give incorrect information like you are currently doing, or makes everything more complicated than it should be, again, something you are doing, I will be rude. ICS has had source for a very very long time and has had a CWM for a long time. JB does not. I have been here for a long time and there is a reason I have recognized contributor. I may be rude, but when someone else risks someone's expensive phone, sometimes it takes being rude. If you can't handle it, oh well.
The reason for my response was because the issue was solved and the stockroms.net is not a site that I trust. We have a repository for all of our stock ROMs.

I already upgraded from ICS FL24 to JB GB27.
The problem I have as of now is, I don't know which roms are compatible with my device?
I'm on JB 4.1.2 GB27, does that mean I can only flash GB27 roms?

You can flash any ROM for the E4GT... You are in the right forums for that.

Oh okay, I was asking because the thread title of most ROMs say "[ROM] FL24 Kuban Kernal" ETC..
Since I'm on GB24, I can still use EL26 ROMs and all?

[Q] CWM on ICS?

I've read through most of these threads an I'm pretty sure there is no CWM for ICS for the Epic 4G Touch. Is this correct?
I have the s2 for tmobile and it is practically unbrickable compared to this phone. My friend has the Epic and I installed ICS AOKP. It is way more difficult on his phone. I don't understand why it is so different. Given, we have different hardware, but neither one of us have the source for ICS or kernel. But I do have the same CWM no matter what rom I'm on.
1. Is it possible to have CWM on the Epic 4G Touch?
2. His ext_sdcard is not showing up. How to I make it work? I tried DirectoryBind to no avail. Maybe I'm doing something wrong.
3. Can i flash zips in ICS recovery? Ive never seen the recovery it put me in before.
4. Am I missing something?
I was under time costraints when helping him out and honestly I'm just happy i got AOKP running on his phone without any issues.
I appreciate all the work everyone has done so please don't take anything I said the wrong way.
Thanks in advance an i look firward to hearing from anyone...

We need ICS kernel source before we can have a proper CWM kernel for ICS.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using XDA
We had CWM on ICS for a little bit, but it was causinga ton of bricks because the partitions are handled differently in ICS. I wouldn't attempt to flash anything in ICS recovery because you risk bricking the device. We likely won't have CWM for it until kernel source drops.
If you need to flash something, the best way to do it is to Odin back to EL26, install CWM, and flash everything (ROM, kernel, modem etc.) in one recovery session. Most of the threads for AOSP ICS roms have specific flashing instructions in the first post.

Thanks for the info. I guess I'm spoiled on my T989! We dont have source either. We didnt even have a proper leak til yesterday, but ICS runs great because our devs are ridiculous.
I have him running FD26 so I will flash back el26 for the mods. I left his baseband alone and it seems to be running fine.
Thanks again. I appreciate the help
Edit: One more thing. I need to reset the flash counter and remove the yellow triangle every time i go back to cwm right?

[Q] Clockwork Mod Recovery

Hi.. just moved from the Samsung Vibrant S to the Epic 4G touch. I am confused on how to get Clockwork Mod recovery on my phone. Flashing it via the ROM Manager Premium app doesn't seem to work. I reboot into recovery, and no Clockwork Mod.
What is the appropriate and correct way to get Clockwork Mod on the phone? It seems for now, the only way I can play with ROMS is to find an ODIN version of the ROM. I am willing to use that if necessary, but a lot of ROMS are not released in ODIN format. Can someone help? Thanks!
Recovery is packed with kernal. So you have to flash a kernal with the recovery of choice. I think the consensus is to use Odin or MobilOdin for now.
Agat63 has some nice kernals and CM9 folks are making some safe ones.
Make sure you read the stickies on how not to brick your phone. There's some dangerous stuff that can brick you permanently, especially if youre used to flashing stuff on other phones. Theyre not just for noobies. Definitely read the stickies here. And did i mention to read the stickies?

Also, do not use Rom Manager, ever.
We can help you with this, but tell us what you flashed so far so we know how to proceed. Tnx
Edit: Its ok to be on ics, but please don't do any rom or kernel flashing yet until we're sure its done the safe way.

thanks guys. Right now, I haven't flashed a new ROM as of yet. Is there one that you would recommend. I'd rather wait till CM is in beta stage, and I have checked out Phantom's rom.
I did try installing a kernel FE22 i believe, and thought it would have recovery in it, but getting into recovery mode, I don't see Clockwork mod. Am i doing it incorrectly? Which kernel would u recommend. Thanks!
Heed tdunham's advice about ROM manager or you'll paperweight your shiny new phone. Here are the kernels http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1662295 Read through some of the threads. I would recommend using the EL26 CWM or one of the latest ICS versions (FF11 FF18) from Agat63; they have not failed me or others. Being new to this device I'd recommend using one of sfhub's one-clicks then odin a kernel with recovery (again Agat would be my choice). Be careful to choose a recovery and install method that is expressly laid out by the developer. Using the wrong format, kernel, wipe, install method can also paperweight your phone.
Good luck.

I'm not sure what you've done so far but this is the method to install stock rooted and also CWM:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=24158551&postcount=9980
From there, you can flash anything you want. I would REALLY recommend sticking with a Gingerbread rom for a while. Flashing over to the leaked ICS builds can be pretty hazardous if you're not absolutely certain of how it's done.
I prefer Calkulin's 3.0 GB rom found here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1332837
It may look stock but believe me it is not. There are a few themed GB roms around to try also.

I have what may appear to be a pretty dumb question. I am running EL29 stock but rooted with Rogue Recovery which states it is CWM 5.0.2.7 I believe. I've been told that Rogue is not currently a safe recovery. I would like to know if there is a way to get my phone to where when I boot into recovery it is CWM and not Rogue ?? Hope this makes sense. I've searched for delete Rogue recovery to no avail. Any help would be appreciated.
thanks in advance.

That's the problem, his questions don't pertain directly to CWM. He just says that there is not one on his phone. Basically, he is asking about how to get root back on a device that sounds like it actually wasnt rooted, and that is a completely different subject. And even if he was directly asking about CWM, the answer is in the post right above his. So he my have searched, but he isn't reading.

The issues with this phone regarding bricked devices and various unsafe recoveries and kernels WAS overwhelming, but after a couple days of lurking the stickies and all the other related threads I believe I've got at least a working awareness of the situation. For anyone else who comes after me, agats tREC CWM based recovery combined with the fl24 kernel as compiled by garwynn is a good place to begin, and qbking77's video tutorials will go a long way to getting you up to speed. Well, while that is the newer repack, i wouldn't day it's the EASIEST method, because the vast majority (dare i say all?) of AOSP based ROMs specifically instruct you to "not use with a JellyBean modem." Following your method, they'd have to Odin flash to gain root, mobile Odin their CWM recovery, then follow ir up with flashing back to an ICS modern, re updating their carrier data & PRL (as well as nv items n all that) then get on to the ROM flashing business. If they start with FL24, they're able to side-step the whole modem compatibility consideration and jump right into flashing their custom OS of choice. Unless, of course, they decide to go with something that's TouchWiz based. But having been new to this device not that long ago, i can say with confidence that the AOSP based ROMs that reside in the "Android original development" thread are much more appealing to someone who's just gained root and is settling down to tweak their device to the fullest extent that modern development safely allows. So, yes, that is the most updated method, but easiest? Gotta say that was covered in my post...

I was a bit cheeky. Apologies. That's what i get for drunk posting... His post was written with the best of intentions. That was no way of me to show my gratitude. However, graydiggy, I'm guessing you weren't hugged enough as a child.... As for what you said about his post, you're half right, the GB27 method would be a fine choice for some purposes. And to clear up the mess i was in when i first posed my question to this thread, that'd have given me root and gotten me back to a happy place. But i didn't expound on my end purpose... I wanted to be able to flash Cyanogenmod, AOKP, etc, etc... And perhaps without the bundled recovery that'd still be a fine route to go, except for the JB modem issue i mentioned, but that's just an extra step. But, on a side note, Garwynn just uncovered some real troubles with the GB27 kernel and custom recovery repack he put out, in case anyone wants to look over it you can find the thread here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=40218765. But, for flashing aosp ROMs, sidestepping the jb modem issue does save a step, so for that purpose, I'd still go with the fl24 one click. In my opinion and for my purposes. So again, sorry for my cheeky-ass post.

[Q] CM9 Alpha5 Stuck at boot screen

I have model SPH-D710.
I followed the guide here.
I had no problems whatsoever until the final reboot. Now my phone's stuck at the 2nd loading animation... the one with the android on the skateboard in the middle of the screen with the blue things coming at you.
I can boot into Odin mode. I cannot, however, boot into recovery mode.
Is there anything I can do? Did I totally screw up my phone to where I'm going to just have to buy a new one and cry about it because my dad would have killed me for voiding my warranty on "such an expensive phone?"

Go to recovery
Wipe everything
THen install cm9

Don't think it was mentioned but Alpha 5 does not have recovery, this was done to prevent people from doing stupid things like factory resetting or installing roms.
The nightly builds have a safe recovery as well as themselves safe to flash on ICS recoveries if you need to head that direction next. But a replacement for Alpha 5 will be out in eventuality with all that as well.
I got it to work after I flashed back to GB and then back to alpha 5.
No idea what went wrong before, but it works now!

You can use the EL26 kernel on EL29 some people flash just the EL26 kernel for recovery, other people odin to EL29 and use the auto rooter to flash the EL26 CWM or EL29 Rogue kernel. Last i checked the CM9 brick from flashing with Rogue is a simple soft brick easily fixed with odin.

Do yourself a favor and stroll through development and read up on the new stuff that has come about over the last couple weeks or so.
Enjoy guys and OP glad you got your phone back up and running. Next time don't panic!

{SOLVED] Newbie issue flashing different kernel

Just switched phones from the evo 4g to e4gt, learning the ropes and trying to figure things out
One thing that im wondering is this:
I running calks v3 EL29 GB with rogue recovery, and every time i attempt to flash a different kernel (like agat newest built from source, it gets flashed no problem (in odin, mobile odin, and recovery) but its unable to boot as it just sits there after displaying the galaxy s II boot logo.
Thanks in advance for your help
Dumb question. Are you running TW ICS? And also there is an issue with that happening. Read the thread. I've held off flashing his new kernel for now.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using XDA
Nope TW GB (Calks v3 EL29 GB Rom)
I could be wrong as I have been on aosp 4.0.4 for a while now, but I think agats newest kernel is ics based. The gb kernels that were being used were usually done by team rogue....what do u need from the kernel ur trying to flash?
Just fyi to all, if you flash a kernel in a good recovery program and it won't load ur phone, ur probly mismatching ur kernel with its intended rom.

i assumed i was mismatching but i wasnt sure, i tried a few where i didnt see whether it was ICS or GB or not.
Thanks

Cant believe i merged from SGS to SGS3 :D

okay guys. i hope there isnt a topic like this anywhere, yet ive searched for a similar topic before making this thread. So, anyway, today i JUST got my SGH-I747m (Canadian Bell) and i must say, its BRILLIANT! It is indeed a smart superphone that is good for lazy people .
OH NOTICE: Im not a noob... ive been with the SGS1 for couple months now and ive been flashing ROMs and kernels like crazy, gone into bootloops, gone into yellow triangles, gone into cpu OC/UV freezes, gone into an accidental sdcard formatting and other mishaps and stuuff. NOW im here in a completely new place seeing completely new people... I think TkGlitch moved to SGS3 but im not sure if he moved to the international version... anyway, the phone came with ICS preloaded and i had no problems with it at all. I was hyped to update it to jellybean which was a huge problem cause i have been setting up kies for a looooooooooooooooooong time now, such an unstable soft . I decided to do an OTA update and it went well. I reinstalled my apps and restored its data through titanuim backup and its all very good but one thing i have noticed is that jellybean is kind of slower but smoother than ICS. I notice fps drops when on xda, or facebook or sometimes browser. Its not that bad but its kind of disappointing... PLUS jellybean eats alot of RAM . I mean i usually had 900mb+ free but now i have like 300mb+ free... Another thing is TouchWiz. God im starting to miss Nexus like UI. I never liked the touchwiz OR the launcher! I am very used to Nexus like UI and Apex Launcher. ANYWAY! I rooted my phone with this thread i found outside of xda where all i needed is to flash cmw recovery and then flash SU and its done! I just froze SuperSU because its an annoying app and downloaded Superuser app and updated the binary. So now guys can you tell me if there is great kernels like Semaphore or Devil for SGS or GREAT roms like CM family or Hellybean or SlimICS or something with a nexus UI? I went to CM site and found a "stable" version of CM10 but im kind of scared of flashing it because recently i found out SGS3 has a flash counter and i dont wanna mess with that thing too much... EVERY OPINION IS A VALUABLE OPINION!

The danger of bricking one's device is implicit in every flashing activity, if done safely there is nothing to worry about!

Well you know Rom Manager instead of formatting dalvik cache, it formatted my system partition... so i kind of dont trust 3rd party flashing softwares lol but thanks for the heads up

How safe is triangle away? If you do everything correctly, should everything be fine? Or is there still that chance of bricking? I have 1 flash counts :/ but was too scared to do anything about it.
You only need to reset the flash counter once. Once you have CWM or TWRP for flashing custom ROMs, they don't increase the flash counter at all.
triangle away

i've used triangle away multiple times now. it works flawlessly and says to verify your flash count before using it. i've found that it has been correct and now just use it to keep my count at 0. there is nothing to be worried about if you read how to use it first. do not use Rom Manager.. not good for flashing roms. and yes.. it can mess up your device.

I have cwm 6.1.x and it does increase flash counter...

Once you're IN CWM and use it to do whatever (NANDroid backups, restores, wipes, flashing zips) it definitely does not increase your flash counter.
EDIT: Rooting the device and installing CWM does increase it, but using CWM does not. Hopefully that makes a bit more sense.

If you root using the no trip method then it never increases the flash counter. I've had mine for about 5 months and have never increased the flash counter.

No, CWM does not increase the flash counter. Installing CWM via Odin might increase it, but CWM does not. As I stated in the post above, mine still says zero and has never been reset.

Hey guys we all know the stock samsung Jellybean ROM came out awhile ago and i was wondering, do you guys prefer the AOSP version of jellybean or Stock Touchwiz version of jellybean? I tried flashing the Liquid ROM and it got boringgg and tiering. Sammys ROM got more funcionality and a gorgeous UI.
The official jb update supposedly has a new flash counter, somehow counting either booting into custom recovery or flashing in custom recovery.
