You are fast my friend.
So it looks like there are two ways to update. Kies is one method, and Samsung released a standalone installer which can be found here.

I have to disagree. Samsung Kies has the ability to backup all user data including text messages, contacts, all internal SD data, and more. Then you can restore your data after performing the official update.
Why Samsung has released two separate update methods is a mystery to me, I guess Kies downloads the official tar during the update process and that other method includes the tar in a simple exe installer similar to our one-clicks.

I installed the Kies program and it never connects to my phone. I just get a message "connecting" that never goes away. I did their troubleshooting diagnostics and the software reloaded the drivers but I still get the same issue.
I downloaded the Samsung version but have not tried it yet. Maybe I will just wait for Garwynn to make his repacks on Monday.
I wonder if the problem with Kies is that my phone is rooted??
Never had a problem before with any one-click or Odin loads.

Just keep checking sammobile.com for the leak. Click the "firmware" tab and do a search for "d710". The ics ROM will start with FB. Its not there yet but I am betting it will be soon. When you find it post it here on XDA. Don't install it until the devs fix it. If you just go and install it you will probably lose root and I am not sure if they know how to root it yet.

I have a way of knowing when things are coming down the tube. That is all I am saying. But, I think we will be seeing something pop up in the next week based off previous times. I am not sure though. It just seems like that is what has happened everytime now. The best part is we know it is getting done as we speak.
One more thing. I wrote last night it was Android version 4.0.4. Well the first RDF was. Here is the link to it.
http://device.sprintpcs.com/Samsung/SPH-D710/FB09.rdf
The second one(FB10) appears to be 4.0.3. Personally the only number I can about is the first one.

There are several great One-Click methods to root your phone it all depends on what your current phone firmware is and whether you want to go to the latest release. Just came across this: Samsung has released the Jelly Bean update for the SPH-D710 phone. It is installed using the Simple Upgrade Tool available thru their site.
Samsung has released a new Android™ OS version for the Samsung Galaxy S® II (Sprint) (SPH-D710). Jelly Bean 4.1.2 software version GB27. Please follow the instructions below to download and install Simple Upgrade Tool using your Windows PC.
Unfortunately, the Android 4.1 Jelly Bean update for the Samsung Epic 4G Touch is not available over the air, and those of you who want to download and install the software upgrade will have to do it through Samsung's site/software. It seems that the downloadable content is just too big to be pushed OTA, at least according to Sprint. If you ask me, I think that the carrier doesn’t want to bother with rolling out the Android 4.1 Jelly Bean update over the air for the Epic 4G Touch because the phone was launched two years ago and it doesn’t seem to be a priority.
The Android 4.1 Jelly Bean update van be downloaded and installed right away. In case you want for details about the matter, you can check out the Sprint support site HERE.
Title: Sprint_D710_GB27_JellyBean_SimpleUpgradeTool.exe
Applicable Model: All SPH-D710 Models ending in SPRSEP-D710AAASPR, SEP-D710ZKASPR, SEP-D710ZWASPR,

yhea buddy!!
Thanks for sharing
Tried installing followed directions and it got stuck in start up boot loop. Computer Odin into recovery, wiped all data flashed the previous rom was using as DD and now it shows Baseband Version heading GB27 and the rest of the builds from the rom. Not a total success so I can't say it worked or didn't just informing of my results.
Even though it says GB27 I just saw QBKing77 has uploaded Official Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean GB27 Update on Samsung Epic 4G Touch Review (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u1Bt55Ngass&feature=em-uploademail) to which my phone does not have these changes. I think some are very cool but love running 4.2.2 and they way my phone is now.

Just noticed the OP says something about the reason this update is not OTA through Sprint because this device is "2 years old and is not a priority". This is not true. The reason the update is being pushed this way is because the entire internal SD is wiped to accommodate the differences in the partitions. A regular OTA simply can not achieve this. Hence the reason for a over the wire update.

Or do I need to downgrade to use any ROMs?

You need to post questions in q&a(kennyglass, I can sense your presence!). But the answer to your question is yes, there are many ROMs that have 4.1.2 and in order to use a Jellybean ROM, you HAVE to have a jb modem. Look in android development for this phone lots of choices for 4.1.2. Read the OP correctly and flash away. Good luck!

GPS
Did this update cause GPS issues for anyone else? I installed this on my wife's phone and now she can't lock on generally. If she can lock on, then she loses navigation after a minute or two.
I saw another thread about GPS issues here. Is my only choice to fix it rooting? I root my own devices (my original Epic 4G and current GS3), but in general my wife likes her devices stock. The non final ROMS I ran and issues I had on occasion have led her to be resistant to the idea.

Try updating prl and profile then reboot and use the gps test app to get initial lock for a few minites and it will lock fast after that. Also you can be stock rooted dont need a rom. I keep going back to stock rooted, mostly get rid of sprint bloatware and run adblocker.

I think there must be something physically wrong with her phone. I did the prl and profile updates, to no avail. I used qbking77 videos and rooted then installed a new ROM, flashing an ICS modem like they recommended, and it sees 0 satellites.
My intention now is to revert her back to the stock ICS and run it to a Sprint store and see if they can't be of any assistance. Does the S2 work like the S3 and count when/if you've flashed any custom roms?

Have any VM US users installed the official update from Kies for their "Samsung Galaxy II" (Epic 4G Touch) yet? Have you had any problems? Has anything improved? The two problems that I read about so far are:
- Google Now closing quickly. Seems there is a fix by clearing cache or reset.
- BT not stable for some audio devices.
How is your battery life, has it improved, I read one report on the Sprint device that it did.
Please let me know of your experience with the official VM Jelly Bean, id GB28 US update from Kies, good or bad, thanks.

Now, you could install what you are asking about and be the first to officially report back on your fondings. That's what I meant with my first post. I hope there are no hard feelings.

Similarly, i only meant to say that even if you are dissatisfied with the update, there are easy methods readily available to go back to the ROM you are on now.
You asking if anyone else has tried the ROM is fine. The other user complaining that it's too difficult flies in the face of everything that xda is about.

Could someone post a link to that rom. I would like to look at it.
Also does anyone know if Virgin Mobile has Visual voice mail build in, or are they still on the dial in / old indicator style of voice mail.
Thanks.:fingers-crossed:

Hi wizard, this thread is about the official Samsung update via Kies. I am not sure about VM-specific ROMs as I am not rooted.
Currently on stock ICS, Virgin has visual voice mail but it only seems to work sometimes for me. I am not sure how it will work on JB or if it will even exist on the official JB. I am pretty sure some vendor-specific features like Sprint ID and Virgin Mobile ID are lost in the official JB release.

I guess I miss understood the thread. The title implied there was a E4gT with a Virgin Mobile GB28 based rom in existence.
I am looking for a phone.apk, that used the non-visual voice mail system, which is comparable with the E4GT. I was hopping I might be able to get it from this rom.

Um, using odin takes a minute or 2 at most plus the wait time for the install which is less than 10 minutes. What's really a pain is lazy people sitting around with their hand out like that dude on the interstate on ramp.

It maybe takes five minutes to read and find out exactly how to do it.

Are you unfamiliar with the One Clicks?
The name is accurate...One click.
If it takes you more than 5 minutes to read how to click a button once, you may want to stay on the stock rom.
My epic 4g touch freezes right after I turned on 4G data connection. It just happened today and it happens every time I turn 4G on. It never froze before when I used it. Anyone know how to fix this?
The only thing that changed from before to now is me updating my avast, google search, and adobe air. Could one of these be the problem?

4g freezing is uncommon on Epic unless you borked it.

Stock Rooted GB27. I did use the adblocker in rom toolbox but that was a while ago and 4G was working fine back than. This only started yesterday. What I mention above is what I did the day before it freezes when 4G connection is on.
You could try a re-flash, that may clear it up.
Romtoolbox sometimes doesn't play nice with jb.
Also you can try adhostblocking zip, using cwm.

I tried what you said and also removed rom toolbox. It is still freezing right after 4g makes a connection.
What rom/build did you run before GB27?
Where you on a cm build?

I was on stock rooted FL24. 4G data was working for weeks when I was on GB27. Then out of no where, it just started freezing when I turn 4G connection on.
Try rest- installing your modem, go to Rwilcos's repository, find Jb roms get a GB08 one click modem and GB27 one click modem download both, extract the GB08 and install. Test your 4g, if it solves the issue test for a while then flash gb27 and see how that goes.

This is frustrating. One night it was working, then the next morning it started freezing.
Sounds like a hardware problem. Have you ever taken the device apart?

No. I have never taken the device apart aside from removing the battery cover to remove the battery.

This is what I am afraid of, hardware problem. I don't have insurance. I had this phone for over a year and a half.

No. I have never drop the phone. I tried again today and once 4g connected, the phone was responsive; but once I saw the arrows light up for data going in or out, it freezes right away at that point.
I think I figured out what caused the freeze. I think it was avast security. After I uninstalled it, 4G was working again. Then when I reinstalled, 4G freezed again. So I uninstalled and it's working again.
Now why would you install something like that on your phone?

For protection. lol. Mainly for the anti-theft feature. I finally have 4G working again. Avast was the problem all this time and I even mentioned it in my first post that 4G stopped working after I updated avast.
