So the screen of my g2 is all black, and Tmobile has allowed me to do a warranty exchange of the phone, it is s off and clock work recovery with a OTA non rooted file system (did a factory reset in clock work so my personal info wouldnt still be there, but did a back up before so i can still restore. i dont believe i had usb debugging enabled). Can someone help me to get it back to s-on with normal recovery... I have been trying to think how to do it, but cant figure it out. I have another g2 that i do all the same steps with. Any help is appreciated.
Dont worry about it. If your screen is broken they cant see it either! They will wipe the phone replace the screen and give it to someone with a loose hinge. If you still want help did you try to use adb? Does it connect?

That's stupid. They can tell by diagnosing the phone when they plug it in. They are going to see whether or not you have the factory rom

It is not looking like it is going to connect, but if you are pretty sure that they arent gonna look, i wont even sweat it.
I think this thread might work:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=835971
But it might be tricky getting past the first step without a screen... but fastboot and adb usually solve most problems...
What hboot do you have installed? Did you install the hboot-eng.img when you rooted?
My theory is that you can use fastboot to flash the parts of the rom, in the right order. Again, this is just my theory and I've never tried this.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=838484
The stock ROM has all the parts on it, but it flashes hboot first, which does version checking and will fail when it tries to install the later parts. If you extract the system, recovery, boot images out of the stock rom, you can use fastboot flash {partition} to restore these, then use fastboot flash hboot {hboot} to restore the bootloader. I don't think there will be any way to verify that this works without a screen*.
*While you are at it, you might be able to use the new G2 to backup a rom with debugging enabled and then flash the system.img (and maybe userdata.img) to the broken one, so that you can verify that everything worked.
Hopefully, someone who knows more about flashing that I do can verify if this has a shot at working or not.
Disclaimer: I have no idea if this will work or not. Flash at your own peril.
i have the s-off eng hboot. clock work recovery and i have stock rom installed, i was kind of thinking i could use something to restore the recovery to stock, and somehow flash original hboot, but i really have no idea to actualy do this.
is there any way that i can hex edit the partition on the other phone do a nandroid, then restore the nandroid on the broken phone, then use hboot to flash the ota update and get the hboot and recovery back to original?
Throw it against the wall until it doesn't connect anymore or turn on. Problem solved.
I'm not sure if this will work anymore... I tried to flash the .img parts from a nandroid backup and it seems to get hung up. My terminal has been "sending system.img" for the last 10 minutes. I wonder if this has something to do with how the bootloader was patched to get root?

You really think T-Mobile are going to plug in and do diagnosis on a phone with a broken screen ? We're talking about a phone carrier, not HTC themselves
use screencast, its simple to use and puts your screen on your pc..I have used it several times for issues such as this.
how do i install it if i dont have usb debugging enabled.

Of course they can tell if its rooted my point is they wont care to take the time. I am no authority for sure but i will ask this... have you seen one single person who has been denied because they rooted they're phone?

I was in a similar situation as you but with a Desire Z, Somehow the screen decided to give up on me so have sent it back to where I bought it from in the UK.
I am fairly sure the RUU changes it to s-on doesn't it? I just ran the RUU and sent it back after screencasting to do a backup of my rom. Still unsure as to what the end result will be with my phone however.
so today the new phone comes, should i just fastboot a new recovery then do a ruu update to put s on, and leave the phone broke and be like no idea, or is there a way to edit the partition version in fast boot?
or do i leave it alone, and just hope they dont care.
They wont care.

I'm just saying, I work in retail and usually when someone brings something back to exchange when there is a problem...I thouroughly check to make sure if the problem was the user's fault, then i deny the return. They do lose money even if it is a warranty exchange

I think I have bricked my phone. I followed the instructions listed here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=834228
but have when i restart the phone, it is just stuck on the words HTC
doesn't load into anything else.
What should I do?
Well as your phone powers on its not a proper brick, when it powers on and gets to the first boot screen like you say there is usually like a 99% chance it can be recovered.
Edit: stupid thanks button!
How long do you leave it on the htc bit before you power down again? maybe your just not waiting long enough.
left it on for 10 minutes.
all it says is "HTC" in green...
Are you able to get into hboot? Try holding the volume down key while you turn on the phone.
One easy thing to try would be to flash an RUU, make sure you find the correct one for your phone (Z or G2) and make sure its the latest one around.
That will return your phone to stock so you can attempt to root again.
yes, yes i can get into HBOOT.

my mistake, wasn't aware there appears to be no way to flash a new firmware on a g2 unless its by ota.... sucks
edit: just bare with us we will have an answer for you soon.
What about recovery? There should be a recovery option in the hboot menu.
Thank you so much!!
Have you got a custom recovery?
If so, flash a new rom
I tried recovery. It turns into a blackscreen with a phone in the middle and a read triangle with a ! on top of it.
I dunno if that is telling me to not turn off the phone.

no, from your description above, you just have stock.
I have an idea that you should be able to fasboot install a new recovery, then from there you will be able to flash a new rom.

Oh ok. I think I'm a bit more calm now. So is there anything you need to know? In regards to the blackscreen with the red triangle warning sign in the middle. Can reset my phone?

I know some. But not everything. Only the very basics. I have had a rooted hero before. I have had some experience with it.
I am not able to use adb tho. (As in, can't get it to work currently)
when i type "adb remount"
it says "error: device offline"
I have plugged in the USB cable.
basically all you need to do is find the clockwork mod recovery image file
put it in your adb folder
turn phone on hboot, and select fastboot
then type the following into your pc
"fastboot flash recovery [recovery.img]"
obviously replace [recovery.img] with whatever your recovery is called (and no [])
then you should be able to boot into clockwork mod recovery and from there you can install a new rom.
before I really do anything wrong here, would you be able to direct me to an image file?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=834731&highlight=cwm+recovery
i have found this thread. however, there is no option to download the recovery file.

Have you connected your phone to your computer successfully before, and only recently not working? Did you change anything?

Well, apparently you don't know what you're talking about. There is no such thing as rooting on Windows Mobile. You're talking about HardSPL.
Did you install the HTC drivers or HTC Sync?
To find out whether your phone is rooted go into the bootloader (turn phone off, then hold volume down when you power it back on). When the bootloader starts up if it says "S-OFF" at the top of the screen you are rooted. If it says "S-ON" then you are not.

you could still downgrade with PC10IMG.zip file (download link in rooting guide on wiki). Than it should be working fine - but you loose root!
(last time I was rerooting it took me less than 5 minutes, so it should not be such a big problem )

Try a different computer/USB cable?
Can ADB see your device when it's plugged in?
Are you S-OFF? If so, try flashing a different ROM and see if the problem goes away.
Like others said, too difficult to definitively say what's going wrong without you providing some more information.

how do you flash a custom rom, im stupid and cant find it :'( and btw this has to be through an sd card cause i think cant do nothing with my usb :/
do you have root permitions ? if so - download rom manager (at market), at first click on flash clockwork recovery and when its done take "download rom" - choose which one you want to and follow the steps that will rom manager tell you.
otherwise you could (after flashing recovery) put some rom to your sdcard, go to the recovery (power button + volume up; take care to not have pc10img file on your sdcard in that moment) - go to the recovery, wipe data /cache, advanced - wipe battery status / dalvik; back , instal zip - choose zip file with rom - and you are ready to go.
... says an error occurred while attempting to run privileged commands D:
i do have recovery mode what can i do with that?

Is there a guide for this?
Hello guys im very new to Android and i want to ask something.
Maybe its a noob question but what i did it.
I S Off my Wildfire S and i Permanently ROOT it this is all i done till now.
I never put some recovery things etc.
So today i saw something that i want to install on my device but i need to put 1st my device in recovery mode and install it then.
So when i went to recovery mode 1st for few seconds its show me a black screen with device and green arrows like all is normal and after a second showing me BIG RED TRIANGLE like something is wrong so what i think is
I dont have a recovery?!
I mean do i need to put it by myself?! this is why im not able to boot in recovery?
And if im right can someone provide me i mean show me where to look for this TUT what recovery to flash and how im sure there already have a quide and etc.
If someone can point me out i want to understand more about this devices what this recovery doing exactly i guess its recover something and maybe i can do backup etc.
Thank you in advance
I have the same issue. I used the instructions and SW at htcdev to unlock the bootloader, which worked fine. Went to try recovery and had the same issue as above. Had to take out the battery to get the phone back.
Ideas?

Firstly I did look for similar threads but I couldn't find my problem with entering recovery mode.
So I get to the bootloader and I hit "recovery" to go into recovery mode to back up before I start flashing roms. All that happens for me is it loads into a black screen with a phone in the middle and a green arrow pointing down into the phone with two green arrows circling the downard arrow, then it flashes black, then comes up with the same screen except it's now a red triangle over the phone with an exclamation mark in the middle. I'm assuming this is to represent an error occuring.
The phone won't do anything after this and I have to restart the phone by holding the power button for long enough (7 seconds?). This brings me back into my phone as if I hadn't done anything. I don't want to start flashing things if I can't backup my phone, I don't know how to get around this. Oh and I have installed ROM Toolbox and the same thing occurs when trying to enter recovery mode through this app. Any help will be amazing!
P.S: My phone is rooted, and I left the bootloader unlocked, would not locking it after rooting be a problem? I'm new to all of this :/

I tried flashing CWR v 5.8.4.5 but that wouldn't install through ROM Toolbox so I tried TWRP v 2.5.0.0 (and the previous versions), none of them brought me any further than the red triangle :/
So I decided to try ROM Manager, I then flashed CWR 5.8.4.5 (successfully) and rebooted into recovery, it brought me to the circling arrows with a loading bar that got not even 1/4 through then it changed to a question mark over the phone and restarted itself within 5 seconds. This is the most progress I've made. Any ideas on what to try next?

place it there, restart your htc one v and goto bootloader then fastboot option
open command prompt there in the folder by holding shift key and type "fastboot flash recovery cwmrecovery6.0.3.3touch.img"

i dont know what the rom toolbox or rom manager does because i dont use much of these apps and rom manager had a great reputation on xda forums that it bricks the device....
try the manual way..
download revovery (appropriate) [would recommend cwm but twrp is also good]
boot into bootloader mode (I'm sure you know this)
connect device to the computer via usb cable
then paste the recovery image in th fastboot folder located on your computer (if u have a rooted device I'm sure u must know what a fastboot folder is..)
then rename recovery to recovery.img
then open command prompt
type cd C:\fastboot (C:\fastboot is the location of your fastboot folder on your pc.. it can be any other location also)
then type--- "fastboot flash recovery recovery.img" (but without the quotes)
your recovery wil be flashed..
there are other recovery flashing guides also u can refer to them in case u understand/are not familiar with all these things...
hope it helps..
good luck..:good:

Thanks Heaps! I did hear about how Rom Manager is infamous for bricking phones so I thought it would be safe enough to flash a recovery (it's not phone bricking stuff is it?) But Rom Toolbox is kind of a lot of different apps in one that seems pretty legit. To be honest I was just trying to be lazy and not bother learning all of this the manual way but it sounds like I might have to just do it the manual way haha, manual is often the best way with a lot of things anyway.
Thanks also for the little tutorial, you're quite right, even though I'm new I'm a fast learner and I've had plenty to do with computers so I know what all of the commands are doing and the terminology but thanks for covering the bases It's nice to see a noob friendly community around, not too common these days.
So yeah, flashed CWR touch, and got into it with no problem, created my nandroid with no problem. Now I'll set to flashing roms (the manual way) Thanks to everyone here for helping me you're all great
