[Q] Help! I think I've bricked my phone. - G2 and Desire Z Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I think I have bricked my phone. I followed the instructions listed here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=834228
but have when i restart the phone, it is just stuck on the words HTC
doesn't load into anything else.
What should I do?

Well as your phone powers on its not a proper brick, when it powers on and gets to the first boot screen like you say there is usually like a 99% chance it can be recovered.
Edit: stupid thanks button!
How long do you leave it on the htc bit before you power down again? maybe your just not waiting long enough.

left it on for 10 minutes.
all it says is "HTC" in green...

Are you able to get into hboot? Try holding the volume down key while you turn on the phone.

One easy thing to try would be to flash an RUU, make sure you find the correct one for your phone (Z or G2) and make sure its the latest one around.
That will return your phone to stock so you can attempt to root again.

yes, yes i can get into HBOOT.

my phone is a g2. How do I flash a RUU?

my mistake, wasn't aware there appears to be no way to flash a new firmware on a g2 unless its by ota.... sucks
edit: just bare with us we will have an answer for you soon.

What about recovery? There should be a recovery option in the hboot menu.

Thank you so much!!

Have you got a custom recovery?
If so, flash a new rom

I tried recovery. It turns into a blackscreen with a phone in the middle and a read triangle with a ! on top of it.
I dunno if that is telling me to not turn off the phone.

no, from your description above, you just have stock.
I have an idea that you should be able to fasboot install a new recovery, then from there you will be able to flash a new rom.

Oh ok. I think I'm a bit more calm now. So is there anything you need to know? In regards to the blackscreen with the red triangle warning sign in the middle. Can reset my phone?

I take it you know how to use adb (based on the root process you were trying to do)?

I know some. But not everything. Only the very basics. I have had a rooted hero before. I have had some experience with it.
I am not able to use adb tho. (As in, can't get it to work currently)
when i type "adb remount"
it says "error: device offline"
I have plugged in the USB cable.

basically all you need to do is find the clockwork mod recovery image file
put it in your adb folder
turn phone on hboot, and select fastboot
then type the following into your pc
"fastboot flash recovery [recovery.img]"
obviously replace [recovery.img] with whatever your recovery is called (and no [])
then you should be able to boot into clockwork mod recovery and from there you can install a new rom.

before I really do anything wrong here, would you be able to direct me to an image file?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=834731&highlight=cwm+recovery
i have found this thread. however, there is no option to download the recovery file.

use this one for now, you can update with a newer one after your booted back to a rom

How do I enter command when in fastboot mode (Desire)?

Hello.
I'm pretty sure i bricked my HTC desire yesterday when trying to flash LeeDroids Mod. My phone hangs at the three green HTC letters and it has been like this the whole night. I've tried taking out the battery and things like that but it still hangs. Even when triyng to do a recovery. So i searched the forum to find out how to unbrick the phone and i found a nice thread that explains how to get acces to the SD again and then how to unbrick the USB connection. But I havent been able to try this out yet since i cannot find out how to enter commands when in fastboot. I know I need to be connected with a USB-cable to the PC, but what else do I have to do?
Hope someone can help 'cause I would really love to have my HTC Desire working again so that i can try out more cool FroYo mods from this lovely forum.

you have to use adb, google the android sdk and start there
All you need to do is boot into FASTBOOT, plug in your USB and run an RUU to get back to stock (assumg one is available for your phone) and then root again, had to do it myself the other day
you do not have to do ANY of this
if you are using clockworkmod or any custom recovery then there is the option to mount USB storage in which you can put on a backup or any other rom onto your sd card, unmount usb storage, and flash it, all in one.

Have you booted the phone while holding the volume down and then selecting recovery, then when recovery boots, press volume up and power then select "apply update.zip" ?
The problem is that when i choose recovery it freezes aswell. The screen with the phone and the little red triangle freezes, so i cannot choose recovery.

What is RUU?
Edit: Maybe I need someone to make a step by step noob guide? Im totally lost. Ive flashed my Desire lots of times before and ive never had a single problem, but right now i really dont know what to do and how to do?
If you're asking questions about RUU's then maybe rooting wasn't for you. It's basic stuff. You need a grasp of the basics before trying something advanced!
Basically it's the official ROM file from HTC/your phone vendor...
Okay. Thanks. I thought that RUU was something like that but I just couldnt see how i should be able to acces any files right now. As i wrote before the phone freezes at the picture of a phone with the red triangle, and i am not able to get any further that that. I would really appreciate if anyone could tell me how and what to do next?
I had the same problem a few days ago. For me it worked to just go through the rooting process again, you can find the steps on modaco (just step 1 of r6), I can't link them at the moment I'm at work and it seems I can't open modaco from here.
Anyways if you follow step 1 you can access the recovery again and the phone will boot past the HTC logo screen.
Also these steps are well documented on modaco.
Try this first since it will save you the step of running the RUU, which I wasn't able to (somehow the software complained my battery was below 30%, which it wasn't)
Good luck hope this solves it for you.

You don't need to go into recovery! boot into FASTBOOT and then leave it at that. Plug the phone in and it will then say FASTBOOT USB. Then run the RUU your phone came with originally. You don't need to go anywhere near Recovery
I am pretty certain that ive found a solution now. I deserve a fist in the nuts for being so stupid not to press volume up + power when trying to get into recovery mode. But fortunately dnlgee asked if i had remembered this. Now that ive gotten this far i should be able to solve the rest. I will however return if im still unable to solve it.

Ah I missed that part, I couldn't access recovery either. Only thing left working was fastboot for me. All other options would hang on the HTC logo screen.

Bricked? Telstra Desire, SLCD HBOOT 0.83

I just recently tried to flash the Rom DeFroST using the Clockworkmod.
I can now not boot into the Rom (I get a looping splash, the cool colourfull nexus one X animation) and if I try boot into clockworkmod, it stalls at the Telstra splash (still image). I also cannot browse any files on the SD card, I have to remove it and insert it into the adpater.
I'm really afraid I've bricked it :/ Can someone help me? I can still get into HBOOT.

your phone is not bricked.
did you root your phone first?
I have a Telstra phone and I had to flash an official WWE ROM first, then use gold card to root my phone and now I can flash any ROM.
My phone came unlocked, it was unlocked by the company from whom I ordered it from. Yes I did root it first. Atleast, I assume I did...
I used the linux version of rewvoked 3 and it completed with out errors. It has been trying to boot for approximately 13 minutes now and is still stuck on the animated nexus one splash...
It is now into its 21st minute, I somehow doubt it's going to boot

Unlocked and rooted are two different things. Is this your first flash of a custom ROM for the Desire?
Whenever you flash a ROM for the first time it does take a LONG time for it to process. I don't remember how long, can't tell you if 15 min is to long. You can always re-flash by putting the phone into recovery mode manually and using the USB method for flashing.
Yes this is my first ROM.
That's the problem, the phone stalls if I try and put the phone into recovery mode... :/ Unless that too is meant to take a very long time?
Ok, surely 1/2 an hour is beyond what it should take?

did you read ALL of this before you started (not trying to insult you in anyway, just question) http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=696189
it will tell you how to put is into recovery mode and then how to flash using USB
Yes I did, although I did end up following separate guides as my boot loader was 0.83 as opposed to 0.8 and 0.75 or whatever those guides included. Ok, start over. Sounds good... I'll try that, but you'll likely hear back from me!

My boot is .80, I am not sure if it changed when I flashed an official ROM first. I did that to get rid of all the Telstra stuff.
One thing you can try is to flash an official WWE ROM first. Then after you can go onto a custom ROM.
Ok, clockwork mod is working again, now to install thisWWE ROM, what exactly is it, where can I get it and what should I do?

here is the link to official ROM for the HTC Desire http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=695667
They may have a radio in them as well. Once you flash one make sure your desire works. Then try flashing your custom ROM. Many custom ROM's need to have the latest radio so make sure you follow the instruction for that ROM and the radio that ROM uses.

one more thing, once you get an official ROM working, go to market and download ROM manager, use it to flash a custom ROM, it might work better for you.
Ok thankyou! But to me a radio is a small transistor based device that uses variable capacitance in order to change frequencies... What is it in this case?
By the way, I thank you for your help, you've been of great assistance!
EDIT: One more thing, that's a lot of roms, which one do I want? Any? do I want signed or unsigned?
Ok I'm even more confused, they're mostly .exe's, how do I use them?
EDIT: It also says they're not rooted, does that mean I have to re-root my phone again?
Having the exact same problem as you, also a telstra phone.
Boots and gets stuck on the "X" colored animation.
If you get it going, please post here what you did

A radio is the software that works your phone, GPS and wifi portions of the device.
use the first ROM on the list. Hold the volume down key and press the power key at the same time, hold them until you enter the recover screen. it will take about 30 sec to process, use the volume down key to select clear storage follow the instructions and this should set your phone back to factory setting (using the last ROM that worked on your phone). Your phone should be working and you should be able to boot-up.
From this point you will be able to connect your phone to your PC then click on the ROM (exe file) and follow the instructions to flash the official ROM
let me know what happens.
Ok so i need a windows PC? I'm on Ubuntu.
My Windows decided to implode after an update earlier this evening. Will probably leave that to download and go to bed. I'll post here tomorrow with how I get on tomorrow morning!

Well, apparently you don't know what you're talking about. There is no such thing as rooting on Windows Mobile. You're talking about HardSPL.
Did you install the HTC drivers or HTC Sync?
To find out whether your phone is rooted go into the bootloader (turn phone off, then hold volume down when you power it back on). When the bootloader starts up if it says "S-OFF" at the top of the screen you are rooted. If it says "S-ON" then you are not.

you could still downgrade with PC10IMG.zip file (download link in rooting guide on wiki). Than it should be working fine - but you loose root!
(last time I was rerooting it took me less than 5 minutes, so it should not be such a big problem )

Try a different computer/USB cable?
Can ADB see your device when it's plugged in?
Are you S-OFF? If so, try flashing a different ROM and see if the problem goes away.
Like others said, too difficult to definitively say what's going wrong without you providing some more information.

do you have root permitions ? if so - download rom manager (at market), at first click on flash clockwork recovery and when its done take "download rom" - choose which one you want to and follow the steps that will rom manager tell you.
otherwise you could (after flashing recovery) put some rom to your sdcard, go to the recovery (power button + volume up; take care to not have pc10img file on your sdcard in that moment) - go to the recovery, wipe data /cache, advanced - wipe battery status / dalvik; back , instal zip - choose zip file with rom - and you are ready to go.

An unlocked bootloader with S-On still permits flashing of custom ROMs. Is your recovery updated? If not, do that.

The guide in post #7 of the guide in my signature is pretty clear. Read that. What is important to know is whether your phone is S-On bootloader unlocked or S-Off. Since you didn't hang on the boot splash when you flashed ARHD, I'm guessing S-Off. But just to be safe: to find this information, reboot while holding power and volume-down. That is your bootloader, known as hboot. What does it say? Finally, my hunch is that you need to update your recovery. The guide has instructions for that, but basically, download the image to your computer and flash it from fastboot.
Oh, and you may need to install your drivers on your computer. Install HTC Sync from the HTC website.

When you're tired, it's best to get some sleep. Most mistakes happen when sleepy and tired (been there!) so I'd suggest a little shut-eye and continue then
Sounds to me like the problem will get solved pretty soon, just read the guides and don't rush things. If unsure, read the guide (for what-ever you are doing) a second or a third time and don't try doing many things at the same time (ie.don't try updating your radio, rom, & recovery all at the same time ).
Pretty much anything can be fixed as long as you got recovery working so don't stress too much. Best of luck and hope you get your phone working soon :good:
Still havn´t found a solution for my problem, but i think i´m on to something....
I think the problem with my phone is the boot.img.... i can´t flash it correctly...

Hey buddy, stay calm haha. I had the exact same problem. The problem is that although you tried to flash it, you nee to have the boot.img and some files including fastboot.exe. All of the files you need and how to flash the rom are in a guide by glevitan. You can just google it.

You need drivers. Install HTC Sync from the HTC website.

Then your drivers aren't working. Uninstall and reinstall with the phone unplugged.

HTC One m8 doesn't boot

So I recently got a European M8 and thought I would root it which turned out to be a bad idea. To start off with, it didn't root properly anyway so i carried on using it. Today I wanted to recover it back to stock (When I got it out of the box) I did a command using fastboot which was along the lines of fastboot boot boot.img but now my HTC will launch the screen displaying that it is a build for development purposes only and then it goes to a black screen but still turned on. It seems to me like there is no Operating System for the phone to boot from.
PLEASE HELP ME
Issue Solved - 22/01/16

Hard to help, if we don't know exactly what you did. Try to explain in detail (or as best you can) the exact steps (including file names, version numbers, etc.) of what you performed.

Again, hard to tell what the issue is, if we don't know exactly what you did.
Are you sure you didn't do fastboot flash? I don't think you would do anything permanent with the command fastboot boot.
What exactly were you trying to boot/flash with this command? What was the file name, where did you get it from, and what was the exact intent?
Did you get this idea from a thread or guide?

If you hold power + vol up for a long time (30 seconds or more) does the phone reboot? Then what, black screen again?
Do Power + vol up again. The moment the screen goes dark (but before the HTC logo screen with the red text warning) let go of those buttons, and only hold power down; and don't let go until you see the bootloader screen. If this fails, try again, you probably just got the timing wrong (started pressing vol down too late, or let go of it too early).
Once in bootloader, select fastboot (if not in that mode already) using vol keys, then confirm with power button. Connect to computer and do: fastboot getvar all
Post the getvar output (delete IMEI and serial numbers before you post).
Again, i am really sorry but i do not understand what i did. It asked me to flash the ROM Update Utility and then use fastboot boot boot.img which then screwed it up and yes when i boot up and reboot it just goes to a black screen.
Here is the info:

I seriously doubt that you can't remember any of the steps you did to try to root it.
Just sounds like you are too lazy to type. So why should I put forth more effort than you; when you are the one that wants help?
Describe as best you can, that is all I ask.

Do you have a file in your fastboot folder (wherever fastboot.exe is located) what is actually named boot.img?
And you really can't remember if you got this idea from a thread? You had to come up with it somehow.
What were you even trying to do here? What did you think the command would do?
Again, either you are just being lazy, evasive, or got hit on the head to cause amnesia; if you can't answer the questions.
So I was looking for tutorials on how to root it and I cam across a program (cannot remember the name) which was designed to root it with a few clicks of buttons ect. I already new how to unlock the boot-loader because I owned a HTC desire 510. I went back onto my phone it has twrp installed but I use root checker and it says that proper root access is not granted and I have tried to use SuperSU but I got the binary issue so I gave up. It was working fine but today I decided I wanted to revert it back to stock again but did something which completely messed it up.
Also, i decided i wanted to restore it because if it broke and i needed it to be repaired it would void my warranty. I was thinking when i reset the RUU it would make it stock again but it did not.
Now, that's more like it!

An Android app, or PC program?
Either way, one-click type root apps don't work on HTC devices. PC based toolkits worked at one time, but were never updated to support the recent software builds (outdated TWRP versions fail on Lollipop, and outdated SuperSU versions fail).

What did you think you were doing with the fastboot command (fastboot boot boot.img)?
One thing I can say for sure: Don't try mods, fastboot commands, etc. unless you know exactly what you are doing (such as following reputable instructions to the letter). The command you did just isn't right. You either got it from a bad source, or you decided to improvise or experiment (really bad idea). You made the issue much worse than it was to begin with (probably just needed to flash the updated SuperSU zip, maybe also update TWRP).

It was a computer application and i thought the command would reboot it with a different kernal/firmware thing. But yeah i followed the instructions like an idiot and messed up my phone and no i don't anymore because i deleted it

Fastboot boot means you are trying to remote boot something without flashing it. A boot.img isn't bootable. I've only seen this done with recovery.img
I think you meant to do: fastboot flash boot boot.img
The one different word makes a huge difference. The action is to flash, not boot. The "boot" is the location of where to flash to.
Also, even if you properly flashed boot.img, this is just the kernel, and wouldn't change much. To return to stock, you want to flash a full ROM. And kernel, ROM and firmware are not interchangeable terms, so don't for a second think they are.
Ok. Is it possible though to revert it back to stock and if yes, do you think you can help me?
Do the fastboot command: fastboot oem lock. Then download the 4.16.401.10 RUU from the following thread, and run it from PC: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2701376
Your alternative is to restore the proper stock TWRP backup. While the relevant files are on that same link, you'll find clearer instruction on the following thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/htc-one-m8/help/tutorial-how-to-stock-stock-twrp-t3086860
It now says Relocked then underneath security warning. Is that good?

The security warning just means you altered something in the stock software (root, kernel, etc.). It doesn't matter, as the RUU will write all partitions to factory condition.
Will i have to re unlock the boot-loader for the RUU.exe to work?

NO. Its required to be LOCKED or RELOCKED to run RUU.
Its the only reason I told you to relock it.
Ok because i had the program running all day with it re-locked but it didn't do anything so i am back to square one

What does your PC screen say? Is the RUU stuck sending?
You probably just need to disconnect the phone and start again. RUU just gets stuck sometimes. It shouldn't take any more than 5 or 10 minutes.
Yeah it says updating 0 out of 7 sending ........................

It should be safe to just disconnect the phone and start over with the RUU again.
This is what comes up
It send that 1 had been sent then it said error
