Can you delete a rom off your sd card after youve installed said rom and done a nandroid backup? will that backup still bootup and run correctly
If you talking about the actual ROM zip file then yes you can delete it. If you are talking about deleting other Nandroid backups yes you can. Just make sure you don't delete the most recent nand backup.
thank you sir
I usually like to keep my ROM on my SD card so if something goes wrong, at least I have it. The only time this practice has ever been useful was when I flashed Amon Ra and tried to flash a new ROM. Went into bootloops and found out the hard way that Clockwork nand backups don't work with Amon Ra. Because I had my ROM, I fixed it easily.
Just my two cents. Nandroids usually do the trick, though.

I usually keep 2 nand backups on my SD card 1 stock sense and 1 of my current rom. If I have any other roms Ill just save them to my pc to keep room in the sd card clear.
finding this out now flashed amon ra 1.8 and doesnt see any downloaded roms on sd card, rebooted phone and i have no service. working off wifi only, rom manager is gone and I cant access the market to download ,any ideas
"the process com.android.phone has stopped"
Do you have Rom Manager? If so you can try flashing ClockworkMod...
Sorry, just reread your post...

Place the ROM on the root of your SD card. It must not be in your download folder.
I learned my lesson today and will always keep a zip of a rom on my card. The latest version of clockwork was a bust. I couldn't use my phone for almost 2 days. Thank god I fixed it.

OK. so what happens if you are running beliEVO and then flash Cyanogen. Can you restore a backup from a previous ROM without bricking the device? And if you can will app data be there?

If you had done a nandroid backup of the beliEVO rom before flashingCyanogen rom, then yes, your can restore the backup and all the apps will be there.
But it's always a good thing to backup the apps before flashing a new rom.

Awesome. Same rules apply if it was not specifically a Nandroid? I used ROM manager prior to flashing Cyanogen.
This is a helpful thread, i was also wondering this...
I have a question, can I rename my nandroid backups on my SD card so I know which backups are which?
Also, sorry to sorta hijack your thread, but I backup my apps with mybackup, and data with titanium, but how do I restore that info if/when I flash a new rom? I'm using cm6 and loving it but would like to try more... thanks!
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
yes, you can rename backups for both RA and CWM backups, I've has issues with putting spaces in the names though so use _ or -
Hi all. I tried a new backup earlier then i tried a recover of said backup. No md5 match found when i chose that backup. Now i try a backup and no /sdcard also a no suitable error msg.. what happened it was running smothly.. i have clockwork touch. Should also note when i try to backup to external nothing happens in touch cwr..

You will need to be more specific when you say sdcard...the GS3 has an internal storage that is considered an SD card in android, as well as an external SD Micro slot beside the sim card. It sounds like maybe your internal storage has become corrupted possibly. Do you have a file explorer app? If so can you browse to /sdcard? Are there any files there? If there are and you can open them then it could just be a bad backup, if you cant then the storage is corrupt. If it is corrupted a format will fix you up at the exspense of losing whatever may be on it. If a format fails to correct the problem you likely have a defective device. Try accessing the internal sdcard manually and let us know what happens. As far as the external storage goes, unless you have installed an SD Micro in your phone nothing will happen when you try to backup to it as it is, in fact, empty.
Yes i can root explore to them both i have micrs sd also. Sorry for not clarifying. I could use to backup to external.. no more. Guess ill try and format thrm?? Sorry for typos using phone. I had my original backup on internal sd.. the stock. It became corrupt and when i backed up yesterday then factory wipe reset etc.. i tried to restore to the exact backup just made it replied no m5 match..

Woah, easy there tiger....there is an edit button if you need to make changes to a post. Im sure the modderators are not going to be too happy with a quadruple post! :silly:
On to your issues, yes i have noticed with CMW recovery the dating system seems to be borked, atleast with the last 5.x version i used which does make deciding which file to restore from. The fact that you are getting MD5 mismatches seems to confirm the fact that your flash memory file system is corrupt, or possibly you have a bad recovery all together. If you can explore to the sd card you can copy the data off of it to a safer location while you determine the exact problem so as no to loose anything that could possibly be good. I would also recommend you download Clockwork Rom Manager from the market and install the latest recovery, 6. something or other. This may solve you problems all together.
P.S. - I got the error about android-secure.img every time i restorded (the error shows during the backup also if i recall) with CMW but it didnt seem to have any effect on the restore process
Yes i forgot to edit.my bad im on my phone. I uninstalled the cwm i had on phone redownloaded from playstore. Solved my date prob. So i must have downed a bad copy from a diff thread vs thr play store.. formatted both sd cards.. so lost tons but hey starting fresh aint so bad. With the premium cwm is touch included i could use free version.. thats what i did last time and had the isuue from manually install. Thanks for your help.

You're welcome, glad to hear you got it sorted it out :good:. I have recently switched to TWRP recovery which seems to me to be a bit more reliable, although i have not used CWM's touch so i dont have any ground for comparison and this perception could simply be a placebo effect.
I'm still a noob about this phone so bare with me. I've recently flashed the Jedi X rom on and am loving it. I am having issues with some of the apps on the play store telling me that "Insufficient storage available" and cant download it. I do have a 32g microsd along with the the romtoolbox pro to have all my apps downloaded to the sd card. My apps show that its used only 703mb. If someone can help me solve this issue I would greatly appreciate it.
You install your apps onto the device and that part is called the sdcard. Your micro sd 64 gb is called externalsdcard. You probably didnt wipe your system data and/or backed up your phone using reovery onto your phone and didnt delete other stuff. Try going through your phone using the file manager as well as connecting it to the computer and youll find that your phone still has data on it that you didnt wipe. Think if it as you uninstalled the program but failes to delete the saved data and downloaded files. Hopes this helps

It's a bug that I dealt with yesterday. Your phone has plenty of storage but no matter what you do it won't install. Try going into recovery wiping caches and fixing permissions. Then try wiping data from play store and googlr frameworks setvices in your app settings. If that doesnt work, per google you're looking at a system format or do what i did and restore a nand backup.

I figured it out. Thanks for all the tips though. I am running rom toolbox pro and had my apps going to the sd. I switched it to auto and it worked like a charm. However, I did switch my rom to clean rom and everything seem to work better there. Thanks again.

So I made a backup of my Aokp rom with a long times worth of tweaks and settings, with online nandroid. I flashed another rom and hated it, so I went to go restore my backup and it was nowhere to be found in CWM. Does anyone have any idea where it went? I couldn't find it in the backup folder and onandroid didn't make a folder in my SD

check the blobs folder
Don't seem to have one. I ran a search in my file manager and it didn't find anything. Would it be a sub folder in one of the other ones on the root of the SD?

i stopped using cwm a while bac,k use twrp now much better imho. it should be in the internal sd card under cwm-backup-blobs.
Can you post the log file at /data/local/tmp/onandroid.log
Did you save the backup to the internal SD and accidentally wipe it while flashing the new ROM you didn't "care" for? Hate is such a strong word especially here..it comes down to user preference..no ROM.is a bad ROM really..its just what you want to get out of it.
One more reason for me to not use the online nandroids. Never liked the sound of if when it came out. Too many things can go wrong.

So whenever I try to flash a ROM I get the following error:
E: unable to open zip file
Erorr flashing zip '/external_sd/Infamous_S4_v2.5.zip'
Updating partition details
I've had the problem since yesterday and have searched different threads with the same error but none seem to have a solution.
I've read that it could be the file and I have since redownloaded the same ROM several times and downloaded different ROMs and all give the same error.
I've ODINed back to stock and re-rooted and reflashed the TWRP recovery.
I've formatted my SD card which was a HUGE pain but it was one of the suggested ideas in the other threads.
And I STILL get the same error. I have no idea what else to do. I was fine on Infamous s4 2.4. I wiped and flashed 2.5 and i lost my status bar. Someone suggested to download and reflash and that's when the problem started.
I got that error, as well
What I had to do was to download it on a computer and use a cable to transfer it to my phone.

I would venture to say it's a bad download. Maybe try downloading again?
Ive downloaded 3-4 times. I've also tried other ROMs. I tried to go back to Infamous 2.4 it wont flash. I flashed the google edition and it did work. The wicked rom also works. But v 2.5 and 2.4 of infamous don't flash.
I did not try flashing from internal. But I guess since I got wicked working I will just stick with that

Can you browse through the zips either through a file browser or on your computer? I kept getting that error with Faux kernel a while back. Thought I'd try to browse through the file on my computer and it would tell me it was an invalid file or something of that sort. I downloaded the same file maybe 8-10 times before I got one I could open; coincidentally enough, the one I could browse was the only one that would flash. What I'm saying, if you can't open the file, then it's a bad/corrupt file; regardless of whether you've downloaded it multiple times or not. If you CAN open it, then the problem would lie elsewhere.
Check your recovery and make sure its updated
I had same problem. It's a bad download. I got it 3 times from same rom and was determined to get it to work. Either download to computer or if using your phone make sure to download from different links. I couldn't navigate through the zip either. So maybe it was a bad upload or download.

You guys are right. Even though some I downloaded on a computer, I just tried opening with root Explorer and the files wouldn't open but the good files did open. I guess that was it all along. I have been having the same problem ever since I downloaded and flashed the GE 4.3. I can't even restore my backups that I have been using just fine before I flashed GE. I have noticed however that the problem only exists with my backups on my external SD card. The one backup I have on my internal is the only one I can restore. I don't think its a bad download problem, only because it's causing my MD5's on my external to mismatch, when I never had that problem before GE. I downloaded Infamous 2.6 4 different times to my computer and none of them have worked. I really want this as I like the GE (not Jamison's Rom GE) but it just doesn't give me what I want. I want Infamous 2.6. HELP!!:fingers-crossed:

If 4.3 changed external file handling again, you'd theoretically get that response again until you wiped both external and internal storage so it could be set up as 4.2 format again. Just backup both to your computer and move things back afterward.

I don't see how it could be GE4.3 doing that. I flashed 4.3 a few days ago and decided to go back to TW; my backup worked perfectly. All of my backups work and all of my flashable zips work. I store nothing on my internal storage; it's more like temporary storage until I move it to the SD.

I havent had issues with backups so far thankfully. I use titanium to backup and restore my apps. I've also never had any issues flashing ROMs before and I've been doing it for years.
As the previous poster suggested, it seems I keep getting bad downloads for infamous roms no matter what server I use to download. For now I have switched to wicked rom and like it.

Yeah, the backup problem is curious... not sure what could have gone wrong there, but the problems with downloading Infamous would most assuredly be a bad download. Would have nothing to do with the file system on the SD card if the zip can't even be opened on the computer to which it was downloaded.

After I posted, I was browsing my photos that I took last night of my kids enjoying the fireworks. I noticed that a lot of them were just not showing up in the gallery, and the videos would give me a could not play this file error message. So I thought maybe if I unmounted and remounted the SD card it would fix the problem, like it used to with my GS2. Well once I unmounted it, it would not remount. So I took it out and placed it in my tablet. Nothing. So I restored stock 4.2.2 and when I rebooted it said my SD card was corrupted and needed to be reformatted. Pop the card into your computer and format to FAT32. That should get it into working order.
