I have tried everything I can think of to get Kies to successfully update my phone on Windows 8 with zero success.
Both WIndows and Kies are up to date.
I have tried running Kies as an Administrator (when you don't it tries to install a program when starting the process and crashes the install)
When you run as an Administrator it starts the process and then just freezes.
Any ideas?
First of all this is a question and it should be posted in Q&A.
I will ask a mod to move it.

Indeed it does....to be fair it isn't like Kies internally has that information posted or has a notification built in.
You shouldn't have to go to an unrelated source in order to be informed that a feature will not work on an App.
I do notice that the title of the thread mentions Jelly Bean. If you are trying to update to the official GB27 you can't be running JB. You need to be running FL24 ICS.
And Windows 8 is built off of 7, so there should be no problem running the update via Kies. I suggest uninstalling Kies and the drivers then reinstalling them and trying the update from FL24 once again. If it still does not recognize the phone, try another USB port. I suggest using one that comes on the motherboard.

Kies works fine for me as well except for updating. Every time I tried to update it would crash.
I upgraded using one click Odin.
Updating works fine too, no problems.

Windows has blown since 2000 (probably earlier, just playing it safe cuz I don't remember that far back lol), it's not anything new.

Yeah, I used to feel this way about 2 weeks ago....That's before it threw up an unrecoverable BSOD, and wouldn't let me system restore, or partial restore. I had to load a month old image I had made that now has issues with some of the text disappearing in dialog boxes, like "Okay" "Change Directory" "Cancel" dialogue buttons on only some windows dialog boxes.
So that was irritating, and it happened after windows 8 decided it was time to scan and repair the hard drives for no apparent reason...
I reupdated and resynced things, which was just annoying, but then after I was finished, a few days later, the same fatal BSOD occurred. So I searched it, and yup, lo and behold, there are a TON of threads discussing the error and there is apparently no solution. Direct back and forths with MS lead to them suggesting that the person call level 2 tech support... Meaning there is no real fix, as they couldn't just describe a process. If there is a process, we must now assume it is ridiculous and overly complex.
So yeah, I installed Linux Mint 14 Nadia instead in protest (only issue I'm having is getting a custom resolution for my HDMI-out to my Vizio 37“ TV that has weird resolutions, no clue how to fix it, tried everything, except trading TVs with someone else that isn't using their TV as a monitor, lol), and will dual boot W7 when i get around to it. W8 looked and sort of felt nice, but it's just a sheen of bs, IMO. The restore features are a joke. I just really want a nandroid backup style backup system, that just works and is very straight forward and easy. If it could backup to NAS &/or cloud, that'd be even better. Maybe I'll learn to code and create one...

Since like 2 days I was on GummyNex everything was always super fast no problems and now I cant get any rom to work good with my phone...
What happens:
1) App Drawer Lags (at random time it stops lagging , then lags again)
2) Scrolling through home screen lags (at random time , then lags again when scrolling again)
3) exiting any app (randomly starts lagging, then it's fine again)
i will post a video once my blackberry playbook gets charged I really dont know what to do!
tried gummy nex (now on AOKp) , tried android revolution
every rom has the same issue... installing for example franco kernel does nothing :/
i reall dont want to go back to stock.. but since android revolution is pretty much stock 4.0.2 i dont want to think that my gNex is screwed because I didnt buy insurance on the phone from VZW (the 6.99 monthly)

1. factory reset?
2. fastboot flash google stock images... problem still happen?
if no, flash ROM.
MIUI rom with franco.Kernel turn my boring useless GN into much better phone. smooth, fast, and thousands of theme to choose from. it even make my screen much more beautiful.

2. Would the tool that root your phone i forgot how was it called it did all the job for you (if i reverted and then flashed stock and root again) would that be ok?
right now AOKP seems to be okay it is really random... when I connect to USB from my PC it lags badly. I will wait few days and see what happens next but would like feedback from you anyway. tHanks!
@zeke I actually hate MIUI and the stock launcher is awful I like having app-drawer like in gingerbread roms ICS etc.. but thanks

I'm stock and everything you're experiencing i am too. The phone is a bit laggy because of the HD res. But atleast opening programs and everything its super fast. I only lag when i scroll fast, most people don't even notice the lag. its all depends on you. I'm used to having a 120hz computer monitor, I notice lag on my old 60hz LCD monitor just by dragging around windows on my desktop.
Try this
First go to recovery, format all partitions one by one. if possible, copy all data of sdcard to computer and format it too.
Then using fastboot flash the recovery again. (if you dont know how to use fastboot, just ask)
using the recovery, install a fresh rom.

Unfortunately if you send it to Samsung they will not send you a phone first. What you have to do is get a loaner phone from Verizon or whatever you provider is. They'll give you a temporary replacement phone until Samsung sends you one back. I know this because I'm currently using a loaner phone from Verizon while my original GNex is going to Samsung for screen issues.

Thanks for the response. I am uploading video right now so please check back soon
EDIT:
Also when I tried going to samsung site and request service when you select Symptoms.. they didnt really have any that would match my issue like defective hardware.. all their symptoms are if you damaged the phone which makes no sence I think I will need to call them
I truly think its gotta be something with verizon nexus phones. Maybe they did something different we arent aware of with that version.

Another Galaxy Nexus! Although I can't guarantee that you'll receive the same. If they try to give you something else or nothing at all, say you don't want to pay for half a billing cycle without being able to use the features you're paying for. You'll also need to show them the email from Samsung proving you're sending your phone to them.

EDIT: I think I found a temporary solution.. "Minimalistic Kernel" it's like a life -savior. But that still means there is some problem with the phone.. at least that wont make me RAGE everytime I see lag.
Still waiting for someone to watch my video and tell me what to do. Apperciate all the help !
Can someone explain to me how does minimalistic kernel basically make all those problems go away and even stock does not?
so much trouble and one simple flash made it go away but I still will have it serviced I will make few calls.
Sorry for double posting
Hey guys, I've taken the GSM Galaxy Nexus beta and have ported it over to the CDMA/LTE version on Verizon Wireless for here in the states.
I can actually release this to say that I'm comfortable with it enough to use it as a daily driver. So here we go.

[DOWNLOAD MIRROR 2]
Code:

I'm not responsible if you break your phone, or your self esteem.
Make sure you wipe EVERYTHING. Including, Data, Cache, and Dalvik-Cache.
Fresh Install, let boot and enjoy.
A few important notes, the Download app found in the tools folder prevents you from downloading large apps through the market over the carrier network, simply go into the app settings to disable this if you don't want to connect to a wifi network.
As far as I can tell most everything is working correctly, however if you notice something amiss. Leave a note here.
Known Issues:
Gallary FC's
Fixed:
Wi-Fi Tether
Airplane mode FC's
GPS
Cheers guys!
I think I will give this a shot a little later. Trying out AOKP b30 right now but can't flash over in the middle of class. haha Looking forward to SOMEONE getting a solid MIUI build for the Gnex Thanks for the work!
Wow looks polished. I'd love to see a fully working MIUI rom that doesn't have all the weird freakouts or horrible battery drainage.
I'm afraid to flash because I get addicted to MIUI very easily and force myself to work through the bugs.
Do you plan on keeping this updated and actually trying to work out the bugs?

I usually release every Friday, unless life throws me a fastball.
The battery drain was super noticeable in the 2.3.30 build, but I think that it was related to an issue with the CM9 upstream that week. I've since have had acceptable battery life this week.
While it's not perfect I hope to polish it in the coming weeks. Now that Xiaomi is releasing beta builds for the Galaxy Nexus I can build more reliable roms instead of having to splice stuff up for the Nexus S beta. I think most issues should resolve themselves in the coming weeks.
Most MIUI roms I've used in the past (and on other devices) seem they come out with a semi-working rom with a few little bugs, but the dev only updates the MIUI code and never works on fixing the known problems. So after several MIUI version bumps, the bugs just keep piling on until it isn't even worthwhile anymore.
+1 for MIUI officially supporting the GN.
MIUI is super awesome. I'm in love with the dialer, messaging, and music app. The theme support is nice too.

I totally understand that. If it's something that's LTE/CDMA galaxy nexus specific I'm going to do anything and everything with in my power to remedy those bugs.
Until Xiaomi fully releases their source code (I think they're planning on doing that sometime this year) I'm left debugging in dalvik byte code land, which can is not for the faint of heart.
I'm glad that this is coming from an official beta. Rather than having to take on the task single handed, there is a whole team in China perfecting the experience for this very hardware.
nice!! thanks!

Thank you!! I've been running 2.3.23 and I've fallen in love with it, despite the few bugs I've come across. Definitely my daily driver until I get AOKP fever again.
Flashing now. I look forward to the support and use the camcorder all the time so hopefully that's taken care of soon
Thanks again
Does this version of MIUI support themes. The last time I had installing themes made it not work.
I loved MIUI on my fascinate and was waiting for it on the GN. The problem with the other versions was it seemed like the images and UI resolution wasn't playing nice with the phones screen. It didn't seem sharp more like it was blurry. Also 5 x 5 home screens didn't look right.
I really like the themeing MIUI so I'll give this a try tonight after I make my back up and don't need my phone.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
Edit: Google Play FC's :-(
Edit 2: Works after clearing data. Went into xda app to edit this and that forced closed. Opened right after that though.
Tethering isn't working for me. It worked fine on a 2.3.xx version. It seems to turn on wifi but nothing can connect to it and the symbol doesn't show up in the status bar. Theming is sporadic. Neither my status bar, including the pull down menu and toggles nor phone, nor sms theme and it doesn't list local themes even though it has the "Downloaded" banner in the online section. It doesn't set fonts. I've tried several and rebooted several times.
The biggest thing for me however is the nav bar. I do not like the controls at all... I'd much prefer if they were ICS or customizable or even capable of being disabled. I also loved the old miui search opposed to the Google. A choice there would be awesome too.
While I'm here, any chance I could get help setting the language to Japanese instead of English or Chinese?
Thanks a mil for all of your time and hard work.

For the most part, yes. I've noticed so far that status bar, phone and font doesn't take. Confirmed SMS, home, lock, icons, and boot animations. Really hard to notice unless you're coming straight from another miui.
Edit: SMS theme is not working. Not sure if it was working when I wrote my reply or if I was mistaken but its not working now.

How is everybody's battery life on this rom? I couldn't even get 6 hours on the other miui roms for some reason and that was with little to no use. Any ideas??

Wow this is my first time using MIUI and damn it's beautiful. I have heard great things about it. It's really a unique, interesting experience and has some great features. Google could learn a few things. I especially love how the notifications and sms work and how much more control you have over the notification led without a third party application. The lockscreen music player integration and control is extremely awesome as well. Installing imoseyon's lean kernel seemed to help smooth things out a bit too. Thanks for all the hard work porting it and keep up the great work on it.
Also tethering worked fine for me.
What's the different between this and the other miui rom from miui.us?
Status bar not only ignores themes but doesn't keep notifications while ob the home screens. It just has Verizon Wireless on the left. I don't know I missed a call unless I see it on my lockscreen or dock icon.

Would love to use this, but as with the last release, when I go to downloads it try's to download "Dictionary Update Information" over and over again, eventually resulting in thousands of failed downloads and causing my phone to get very hot. Tried wiping and installing a couple different times with no success.

Would love to use this, but as with the last release, when I go to downloads it try's to download "Dictionary Update Information" over and over again, eventually resulting in thousands of failed downloads and causing my phone to get very hot. Tried wiping and installing a couple different times with no success.

This is caused by the Downloads app that defaults under a tools folder in the home screen
You can prevent it from happening by doing the following
In the Home Launcher screen by default there should be a folder called tools. Within the tools folder (or wherever you may have put it now) there is an app called Downloads.
After entering the App, go ahead and hit the menu button and select "Settings"
Now when you are finally here you have the option to turn off monitoring by deselecting "Data download prompt", or you can set a different value if you want it to control large file downloads if you are on a limited data plan.
I use Google.com for my browser and never had any issues with it until today. When I load Google.com it comes up very quyickly as it should but it just keeps reloading and reloading until i force stop it or back out of it. Sometimes it will work OK but more times than most it will just constantly reload. No other web pages I set up to be my home page does this happen to. I'm wondering is Google.com having issues and I just don't know about it, (I hope) Any help would be welcomed.

Same thing was happening to me for the past few days. I never had that happen before. It would just keep reloading.. The bar would just keep going half way over, then reload. I un installed the stock browser and installed Chrome. Didn't know what else to do.. BTW.. I'm on AOKP Liquid Smooth RC9 if that makes a difference... It started after updating from RC8.

Same issue here starting today, running Stock 4.1.1. I have also noticed that my Amazon App Store is having the same refresh issue.

I am on completely stock and just all of a sudden My stock Google browser starting doing exactly what you just pointed out. I noticed if I signed out of the browser (on the phone) it would stop reloading. I also have the SGS2 using it strictly on wifi and the same thing was happening to that one as well. I signed out of that one and it also stopped.
As I said I am completely stock without root and it still happened so it isn't because you flashed a different rom. Hoping this is a hiccup in the Google browser and will somehow fix itself with a possible update.
Any changes I will let you know by posting it right here.

Well it's good to know this is on Google's side. It started doing this last night for me. I use the page multiple times a day without any problem until now... The problem seems to be in the mobile view so switch to classic for now and it will fix the problem. The mobile version keeps trying to ping your location but gets an error of unknown location. All the GPS settings do nothing to effect it.

Thanks for the tip, I just signed out of the mobile version and all was OK. At least I know it isn't my phone.
Thanks,

Has anyone found a real fix for this issue. As I said I just signed out of Google.com from the browser and am able to use it without it reloading. I tried signing back in and it started reloading immediately. Very annoying. I can not figure out why all of a sudden that Google.com just keeps reloading???
Any input would be well appreciated.
Thanks,
Vinny

Just started a day ago, what is going on?
A lot of users are reporting same issue in other forums as well.
And its not phone specific - seems to be hitting all kinds of newer phones...???

There seems to be a few "bugs" going around since the 4.1.1 JB (JellyBean) update. So far I have found the "Refresh Bug" and the "Non-Stock Keyboard Bug".
The solution I posted earlier seems to be working fine for me (Stock 4.1.1) so far.. 'crosses fingers'
Within the next few seeks we should see a rollout of the 4.1.2 OTA update which will solve a lot of bugs us "Stock" users are experiencing + Added features.
Hold tight and be patient as we should find a permanent solution soon.

I have tried just about everything and the only thing that works if you want to use the Mobile Version of the stock browser is just to remain signed OUT. Don't think it is Jelly Bean related because I have had Jelly Bean for a while now and this just started yesterday afternoon I think for me. I use that for my browser, use it daily and it worked great right up until yesterday. ( I think it might be just T-Mobile related because I also have a Verizon HTC Rezound and this isn't a problem on that phone )

You got it wrong buddy. This is not an issue with jellybean or the os.
Read up and you will see this is happening in various os. There is even a thread that is reporting the same issue on iOS.
It is something with the Google mobile site that is affecting some phones.

Been seeing the same issue on my S2. It's become an incredible annoyance.
Noticed just a little while ago that turning off "Precise Location" in the Settings for Google (at the bottom of the page) has seemed to fix my problem. Not sure if it'll last, but for now I can relax again... lol.
Quick Update
I was having exact problems, on ATT Galaxy S3, Stock, running ICS....Today, I updated on Kies, to JB...all problems are gone....I can sign into Goggle, ..and no more constant refreshes ...

While the AOSP 4.2 keyboard and the Samsung keyboard are okay, I've found that Swype is still better at gesture typing all the way around.
Of course, it didn't come bundled with our phone :sadface
So here's a quick little tutorial on how to get it. Root is NOT required, anyone with an Android phone can do this, I'm just posting it here because our phone specifically doesn't come with it which means our ROMs can't even have it (refer to warez rules). It's probably written somewhere else on the site, but this will be easier to find for T-Mo Note II owners
Real quick and easy, should take 5 minutes. This will get you the latest Swype beta.
Step 1
Go to this website http://beta.swype.com/android/create/
Step 2
Register with your email and password
Step 3
Open the email they send you on your phone. In the email, there is a download link for swype beta installer. Download and install that. Remember the One Time Activation code they send you too. Also, don't forget to allow non-play store apps to be installed (should be under developer settings). You can do this step on your computer, but then you have to transfer the apk to your phone when you download it...it's just easier this way.
Step 4
Open Swype Beta installer that you just installed (it's not the actual keyboard...yet). Sign in using your email and password. Then enter your One Time Activation code.
Step 5
Once that's done, it'll prompt you to download Swype Beta. Do so, then install. If you forgot to allow play store apps it'll toss a thing that says you need to. If this happens, use a file manager to navigate back to the Downloads folder of your internal SD card to try to install it again (since you can't get back to that install screen once you leave it)
Step 6
...?
Step 7
Profit
Afterward, feel free to configure it however you want to. The first thing I did was go to "Personalize" in the Settings and change the theme.
This really isn't a mod or anything special, just a little way to get everyone Swype since our Note II doesn't come with it feel free to share with everyone (especially the other US Note II forums) and don't bother giving credit to me lol. It's signing up for a website, I literally did nothing here except write it out for you guys!
If you're having trouble (which you really shouldn't), here's the popular trouble shooting stuff: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1640608
For Swift Key Beta Flow:
Step 1
Go to their official Swift Key Flow website: http://www.swiftkey.net/flow/
Step 2
Download the APK for phones
Step 3
Install like any normal APK file (use your favorite file manager, navigate to wherever you downloaded it to....likely the Downloads folder on your SD card...and install it).
Step 4
...?
Step 5
Profit!
I've personally tested both of these and they both work.
and a screen shot for posterity.

Beta has voice to text, stock swype that comes with our phone doesn't.
But Beta Swype has its own problem. The dictionary keeps disappearing. It seems to be a major bug in Beta Swype according to many.
Can't you not install beta over the pre-installed?
I haven't rooted and custom rom'd the note 2 yet... being lazy
Swype came pre installed. And... What is this a guide for? Are there people who use these phones that don't know how to install apps?

You have to uninstall any prior versions of swype before you can install this one.

Most of the custom ROMs don't have Swype pre-installed. I had to install the beta on Jedi 6.1 last night...and then again on Jedi X5 this morning. Just because you can use it to install on any ROM, rooted or not, doesn't mean it's intended for any specific audience. It's just the way the method works. Most people who will be using this will be using custom ROMs that don't have it included. Personally, my stock didn't have it included. I don't know why (I preordered it, so maybe I just got lucky?) and many people in the IRC channel for this phone don't have it either. So it's not like everyone's running it but me.
Now, as for your condescending comment on installing applications...well I'll preserve my judgement, but I never rested my phone on a NFC tag and couldn't figure out why it was reading the tag over and over again. So don't poke fun, we've all asked stupid questions before.

Couldn't agree more. While I've been using swype beta for a while now, it's always great to see people taking the time to educate and help others. Really appreciate the effort.
My two cents:
1. I found swype beta to perform much better than stock. 2. If I remember correctly, I was able to run both stock swype and beta swype together, although I installed beta from a titanium backup file I had and didn't go through the full setup process, so maybe that's why I didn't have to uninstall stock swype first

I haven't used swype in quite some time (I think it came bundled with the Epic Touch on Sprint, their Galaxy S II) and it's definitely improved dramatically since then. i really like how it handles somethings better than it did before (i.e. website links, swear words, etc). When I typed lol into the older versions, it would come out as "loo". The only thing I'm not a fan of is the dictionary not sticking. So i have to manually type out complicated words like Bryzgalov (or any other Russian hockey player). I'm sure they'll fix it...and hockey is in the middle of a lockout so I'm not too concerned about it right now Definitely a fan of it.

Weekly Update
I am also going to start doing weekly news updates on what is
happening with Linux-On-Android and the Galaxy Nexus in
particular. This will NOT be general news only Galaxy Nexus
related news.

reboot error when exiting the app. There is also a suprise new
feature coming soon that I am working on. Can you guess what it

About
Hello all of you Samsung Galaxy Nexus users!
We have a huge thread for the Linux-On-Android project, but its sometimes hard to get every question seen an answered in a timly and orderly fassion. So I created this thread for all the Samsung Galaxy Nexus users to post their questions, comments, and anything related to the project. This pretains to ALL Galaxy Nexus devices (GSM, LTE, HSPA+, etc...).
What is this all about?/Why put this on my Galaxy Nexus?
This projects aim is to bring a range of linux distros to your android device through a method known as 'chroot', see it has running a linux distro within a virtual machine on your phone. You can access this virtual machine and run it on your phone without causing any damage to your device, or having to overwrite anything. Why might you want this? well my apps are designed to make the install and set up process as easy as possible (more so in the paid apps) while still giving you some flexibility. Once you have the distro up and running then you can pretty much run and install any linux software you like (so long as there is a arm port or it is not architecturaly depenedent), sure there a very few big benefits over what android itself can do but it is still pretty dam cool. (and with the free ubuntu version, hey its free does it matter how useful you find it?)
Wait this uses VNC why shouldn't I just VNC to a computer?
VNC is used to access the GUI as at the moment I have not yet implemented a native way of viewing the GUI. But the Linux distro itself is running within the phone and can be controlled via the terminal app so if your a seasoned Linux user you may never even want to use the GUI
What is Chroot?/How does this work?
"A chroot on Unix operating systems is an operation that changes the apparent root directory for the current running process and its children" - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chroot
This method of running linux distros with android has been around for some time. I have worked on my scripts to make the process more user friendly and give you far more options from the word go.
The scripts start by mounting the ubuntu image file within the android file system and then mounts the sdcard and if ou have it internal memory within the ubuntu file system.
Chroot is then used to change the root directory to that of the mounted ubuntu and a bash shell is then opened to allow you to control Ubuntu this is kind of like 'booting' the OS.
The likes of VNC and SSHD are then set up when ubuntu is 'booted' to allow you to connect to the GUI if you require it.

This is awesome. And I've watched it grow leaps and bounds over the past year.
The only thing that would make it tremendously better for me would be mouse support. I don't know of it's just me not knowing how to do it, and if it is I apologize. A mouse works, yes, but you have to drag the cursor with it. If there was some way that the cursor could be directly controlled by a USB or Bluetooth mouse, I'd be passionately in love.
I'm already in love with this app and the possibilities it opens. Thanks for the hard work. You already have a donation from me.

I agree with you and right now click and move and click and drag to move are the only supported ways using the vnc viewer. However we will eventually be making our on vnc viewer application built into the app. I have already set up the framework for it so you should see that in the near future.

We have decided to remove the v2 app from the playstore and replace it with the old v1.2.1 release for the time being.
We where un happy with the amount of crashes and decided it would be better to remove the app for now and get the bugs all fixed.
Thank you for your patients and comments, we will also be looking to improve the widget(s) and included new builds guides before re-releasing v2!

If you read the OP underneath weekly update it explains. Please read the post before asking a question like this unless you have already read the post and are just asking for more information or clarification.
It's been almost a year since trying it, but back when the big thing was Ubuntu for the Nexus and there were a bunch of these it wasn't overly hard to add mouse support by installing drivers from within the distro. It'll be interesting to see how stuff like that goes when they finally release the Ubuntu OS for the Nexus: http://androidandme.com/2013/01/sma...for-galaxy-nexus-to-be-available-in-february/
