Weekly Update
I am also going to start doing weekly news updates on what is
happening with Linux-On-Android and the Galaxy Nexus in
particular. This will NOT be general news only Galaxy Nexus
related news.
I have fixed a couple bugs in the app one being the Galaxy Nexus
crash error (ROM specific). I also am working to fix the random hot
reboot error when exiting the app. There is also a suprise new
feature coming soon that I am working on. Can you guess what it
is? Cheers!
About
Hello all of you Samsung Galaxy Nexus users!
We have a huge thread for the Linux-On-Android project, but its sometimes hard to get every question seen an answered in a timly and orderly fassion. So I created this thread for all the Samsung Galaxy Nexus users to post their questions, comments, and anything related to the project. This pretains to ALL Galaxy Nexus devices (GSM, LTE, HSPA+, etc...).
What is this all about?/Why put this on my Galaxy Nexus?
This projects aim is to bring a range of linux distros to your android device through a method known as 'chroot', see it has running a linux distro within a virtual machine on your phone. You can access this virtual machine and run it on your phone without causing any damage to your device, or having to overwrite anything. Why might you want this? well my apps are designed to make the install and set up process as easy as possible (more so in the paid apps) while still giving you some flexibility. Once you have the distro up and running then you can pretty much run and install any linux software you like (so long as there is a arm port or it is not architecturaly depenedent), sure there a very few big benefits over what android itself can do but it is still pretty dam cool. (and with the free ubuntu version, hey its free does it matter how useful you find it?)
Wait this uses VNC why shouldn't I just VNC to a computer?
VNC is used to access the GUI as at the moment I have not yet implemented a native way of viewing the GUI. But the Linux distro itself is running within the phone and can be controlled via the terminal app so if your a seasoned Linux user you may never even want to use the GUI
What is Chroot?/How does this work?
"A chroot on Unix operating systems is an operation that changes the apparent root directory for the current running process and its children" - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chroot
This method of running linux distros with android has been around for some time. I have worked on my scripts to make the process more user friendly and give you far more options from the word go.
The scripts start by mounting the ubuntu image file within the android file system and then mounts the sdcard and if ou have it internal memory within the ubuntu file system.
Chroot is then used to change the root directory to that of the mounted ubuntu and a bash shell is then opened to allow you to control Ubuntu this is kind of like 'booting' the OS.
The likes of VNC and SSHD are then set up when ubuntu is 'booted' to allow you to connect to the GUI if you require it.

LinuxOnAndroid Beta v3 is out and ready for you to gobble up! Let me know if you have any questions or bug reports! Cheers!

Beta v3

This is awesome. And I've watched it grow leaps and bounds over the past year.
The only thing that would make it tremendously better for me would be mouse support. I don't know of it's just me not knowing how to do it, and if it is I apologize. A mouse works, yes, but you have to drag the cursor with it. If there was some way that the cursor could be directly controlled by a USB or Bluetooth mouse, I'd be passionately in love.
I'm already in love with this app and the possibilities it opens. Thanks for the hard work. You already have a donation from me.

I agree with you and right now click and move and click and drag to move are the only supported ways using the vnc viewer. However we will eventually be making our on vnc viewer application built into the app. I have already set up the framework for it so you should see that in the near future.

this is great! thanks!

Great! Glad you like it!

We have decided to remove the v2 app from the playstore and replace it with the old v1.2.1 release for the time being.
We where un happy with the amount of crashes and decided it would be better to remove the app for now and get the bugs all fixed.
Thank you for your patients and comments, we will also be looking to improve the widget(s) and included new builds guides before re-releasing v2!

If you read the OP underneath weekly update it explains. Please read the post before asking a question like this unless you have already read the post and are just asking for more information or clarification.

It's been almost a year since trying it, but back when the big thing was Ubuntu for the Nexus and there were a bunch of these it wasn't overly hard to add mouse support by installing drivers from within the distro. It'll be interesting to see how stuff like that goes when they finally release the Ubuntu OS for the Nexus: http://androidandme.com/2013/01/sma...for-galaxy-nexus-to-be-available-in-february/

[ROM] MIUIAndroid 2.6.8 TORO

Hey guys, I've taken the GSM Galaxy Nexus beta and have ported it over to the CDMA/LTE version on Verizon Wireless for here in the states.
I can actually release this to say that I'm comfortable with it enough to use it as a daily driver. So here we go.

I'm not responsible if you break your phone, or your self esteem.
Make sure you wipe EVERYTHING. Including, Data, Cache, and Dalvik-Cache.
Fresh Install, let boot and enjoy.
A few important notes, the Download app found in the tools folder prevents you from downloading large apps through the market over the carrier network, simply go into the app settings to disable this if you don't want to connect to a wifi network.
As far as I can tell most everything is working correctly, however if you notice something amiss. Leave a note here.
Known Issues:
Gallary FC's
Fixed:
Wi-Fi Tether
Airplane mode FC's
GPS
Cheers guys!
I think I will give this a shot a little later. Trying out AOKP b30 right now but can't flash over in the middle of class. haha Looking forward to SOMEONE getting a solid MIUI build for the Gnex Thanks for the work!
Wow looks polished. I'd love to see a fully working MIUI rom that doesn't have all the weird freakouts or horrible battery drainage.
I'm afraid to flash because I get addicted to MIUI very easily and force myself to work through the bugs.
Do you plan on keeping this updated and actually trying to work out the bugs?

I usually release every Friday, unless life throws me a fastball.
The battery drain was super noticeable in the 2.3.30 build, but I think that it was related to an issue with the CM9 upstream that week. I've since have had acceptable battery life this week.
While it's not perfect I hope to polish it in the coming weeks. Now that Xiaomi is releasing beta builds for the Galaxy Nexus I can build more reliable roms instead of having to splice stuff up for the Nexus S beta. I think most issues should resolve themselves in the coming weeks.
Most MIUI roms I've used in the past (and on other devices) seem they come out with a semi-working rom with a few little bugs, but the dev only updates the MIUI code and never works on fixing the known problems. So after several MIUI version bumps, the bugs just keep piling on until it isn't even worthwhile anymore.
+1 for MIUI officially supporting the GN.
MIUI is super awesome. I'm in love with the dialer, messaging, and music app. The theme support is nice too.

I totally understand that. If it's something that's LTE/CDMA galaxy nexus specific I'm going to do anything and everything with in my power to remedy those bugs.
Until Xiaomi fully releases their source code (I think they're planning on doing that sometime this year) I'm left debugging in dalvik byte code land, which can is not for the faint of heart.
I'm glad that this is coming from an official beta. Rather than having to take on the task single handed, there is a whole team in China perfecting the experience for this very hardware.
nice!! thanks!

Thank you!! I've been running 2.3.23 and I've fallen in love with it, despite the few bugs I've come across. Definitely my daily driver until I get AOKP fever again.
Flashing now. I look forward to the support and use the camcorder all the time so hopefully that's taken care of soon
Thanks again
Does this version of MIUI support themes. The last time I had installing themes made it not work.
I loved MIUI on my fascinate and was waiting for it on the GN. The problem with the other versions was it seemed like the images and UI resolution wasn't playing nice with the phones screen. It didn't seem sharp more like it was blurry. Also 5 x 5 home screens didn't look right.
I really like the themeing MIUI so I'll give this a try tonight after I make my back up and don't need my phone.

Edit: Google Play FC's :-(
Edit 2: Works after clearing data. Went into xda app to edit this and that forced closed. Opened right after that though.
Tethering isn't working for me. It worked fine on a 2.3.xx version. It seems to turn on wifi but nothing can connect to it and the symbol doesn't show up in the status bar. Theming is sporadic. Neither my status bar, including the pull down menu and toggles nor phone, nor sms theme and it doesn't list local themes even though it has the "Downloaded" banner in the online section. It doesn't set fonts. I've tried several and rebooted several times.
The biggest thing for me however is the nav bar. I do not like the controls at all... I'd much prefer if they were ICS or customizable or even capable of being disabled. I also loved the old miui search opposed to the Google. A choice there would be awesome too.
While I'm here, any chance I could get help setting the language to Japanese instead of English or Chinese?
Thanks a mil for all of your time and hard work.

For the most part, yes. I've noticed so far that status bar, phone and font doesn't take. Confirmed SMS, home, lock, icons, and boot animations. Really hard to notice unless you're coming straight from another miui.
Edit: SMS theme is not working. Not sure if it was working when I wrote my reply or if I was mistaken but its not working now.

How is everybody's battery life on this rom? I couldn't even get 6 hours on the other miui roms for some reason and that was with little to no use. Any ideas??
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
Wow this is my first time using MIUI and damn it's beautiful. I have heard great things about it. It's really a unique, interesting experience and has some great features. Google could learn a few things. I especially love how the notifications and sms work and how much more control you have over the notification led without a third party application. The lockscreen music player integration and control is extremely awesome as well. Installing imoseyon's lean kernel seemed to help smooth things out a bit too. Thanks for all the hard work porting it and keep up the great work on it.
Also tethering worked fine for me.
What's the different between this and the other miui rom from miui.us?
Status bar not only ignores themes but doesn't keep notifications while ob the home screens. It just has Verizon Wireless on the left. I don't know I missed a call unless I see it on my lockscreen or dock icon.

Would love to use this, but as with the last release, when I go to downloads it try's to download "Dictionary Update Information" over and over again, eventually resulting in thousands of failed downloads and causing my phone to get very hot. Tried wiping and installing a couple different times with no success.

This is caused by the Downloads app that defaults under a tools folder in the home screen
You can prevent it from happening by doing the following
In the Home Launcher screen by default there should be a folder called tools. Within the tools folder (or wherever you may have put it now) there is an app called Downloads.
After entering the App, go ahead and hit the menu button and select "Settings"
Now when you are finally here you have the option to turn off monitoring by deselecting "Data download prompt", or you can set a different value if you want it to control large file downloads if you are on a limited data plan.

How to Get Swype Beta or Swift Key Flow Beta on any phone (No root required)

While the AOSP 4.2 keyboard and the Samsung keyboard are okay, I've found that Swype is still better at gesture typing all the way around.
Of course, it didn't come bundled with our phone :sadface
So here's a quick little tutorial on how to get it. Root is NOT required, anyone with an Android phone can do this, I'm just posting it here because our phone specifically doesn't come with it which means our ROMs can't even have it (refer to warez rules). It's probably written somewhere else on the site, but this will be easier to find for T-Mo Note II owners
Real quick and easy, should take 5 minutes. This will get you the latest Swype beta.
Step 1
Go to this website http://beta.swype.com/android/create/
Step 2
Register with your email and password
Step 3
Open the email they send you on your phone. In the email, there is a download link for swype beta installer. Download and install that. Remember the One Time Activation code they send you too. Also, don't forget to allow non-play store apps to be installed (should be under developer settings). You can do this step on your computer, but then you have to transfer the apk to your phone when you download it...it's just easier this way.
Step 4
Open Swype Beta installer that you just installed (it's not the actual keyboard...yet). Sign in using your email and password. Then enter your One Time Activation code.
Step 5
Once that's done, it'll prompt you to download Swype Beta. Do so, then install. If you forgot to allow play store apps it'll toss a thing that says you need to. If this happens, use a file manager to navigate back to the Downloads folder of your internal SD card to try to install it again (since you can't get back to that install screen once you leave it)
Step 6
...?
Step 7
Profit
Afterward, feel free to configure it however you want to. The first thing I did was go to "Personalize" in the Settings and change the theme.
This really isn't a mod or anything special, just a little way to get everyone Swype since our Note II doesn't come with it feel free to share with everyone (especially the other US Note II forums) and don't bother giving credit to me lol. It's signing up for a website, I literally did nothing here except write it out for you guys!
If you're having trouble (which you really shouldn't), here's the popular trouble shooting stuff: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1640608
For Swift Key Beta Flow:
Step 1
Go to their official Swift Key Flow website: http://www.swiftkey.net/flow/
Step 2
Download the APK for phones
Step 3
Install like any normal APK file (use your favorite file manager, navigate to wherever you downloaded it to....likely the Downloads folder on your SD card...and install it).
Step 4
...?
Step 5
Profit!
I've personally tested both of these and they both work.
and a screen shot for posterity.

Beta has voice to text, stock swype that comes with our phone doesn't.
But Beta Swype has its own problem. The dictionary keeps disappearing. It seems to be a major bug in Beta Swype according to many.
Can't you not install beta over the pre-installed?
I haven't rooted and custom rom'd the note 2 yet... being lazy

Most of the custom ROMs don't have Swype pre-installed. I had to install the beta on Jedi 6.1 last night...and then again on Jedi X5 this morning. Just because you can use it to install on any ROM, rooted or not, doesn't mean it's intended for any specific audience. It's just the way the method works. Most people who will be using this will be using custom ROMs that don't have it included. Personally, my stock didn't have it included. I don't know why (I preordered it, so maybe I just got lucky?) and many people in the IRC channel for this phone don't have it either. So it's not like everyone's running it but me.
Now, as for your condescending comment on installing applications...well I'll preserve my judgement, but I never rested my phone on a NFC tag and couldn't figure out why it was reading the tag over and over again. So don't poke fun, we've all asked stupid questions before.

Couldn't agree more. While I've been using swype beta for a while now, it's always great to see people taking the time to educate and help others. Really appreciate the effort.
My two cents:
1. I found swype beta to perform much better than stock. 2. If I remember correctly, I was able to run both stock swype and beta swype together, although I installed beta from a titanium backup file I had and didn't go through the full setup process, so maybe that's why I didn't have to uninstall stock swype first

I haven't used swype in quite some time (I think it came bundled with the Epic Touch on Sprint, their Galaxy S II) and it's definitely improved dramatically since then. i really like how it handles somethings better than it did before (i.e. website links, swear words, etc). When I typed lol into the older versions, it would come out as "loo". The only thing I'm not a fan of is the dictionary not sticking. So i have to manually type out complicated words like Bryzgalov (or any other Russian hockey player). I'm sure they'll fix it...and hockey is in the middle of a lockout so I'm not too concerned about it right now Definitely a fan of it.

Jelly Bean + Windows 8 = Giant Fail

I have tried everything I can think of to get Kies to successfully update my phone on Windows 8 with zero success.
Both WIndows and Kies are up to date.
I have tried running Kies as an Administrator (when you don't it tries to install a program when starting the process and crashes the install)
When you run as an Administrator it starts the process and then just freezes.
Any ideas?
First of all this is a question and it should be posted in Q&A.
I will ask a mod to move it.

Indeed it does....to be fair it isn't like Kies internally has that information posted or has a notification built in.
You shouldn't have to go to an unrelated source in order to be informed that a feature will not work on an App.
I do notice that the title of the thread mentions Jelly Bean. If you are trying to update to the official GB27 you can't be running JB. You need to be running FL24 ICS.
And Windows 8 is built off of 7, so there should be no problem running the update via Kies. I suggest uninstalling Kies and the drivers then reinstalling them and trying the update from FL24 once again. If it still does not recognize the phone, try another USB port. I suggest using one that comes on the motherboard.

Kies works fine for me as well except for updating. Every time I tried to update it would crash.
I upgraded using one click Odin.
Updating works fine too, no problems.

Windows has blown since 2000 (probably earlier, just playing it safe cuz I don't remember that far back lol), it's not anything new.

Yeah, I used to feel this way about 2 weeks ago....That's before it threw up an unrecoverable BSOD, and wouldn't let me system restore, or partial restore. I had to load a month old image I had made that now has issues with some of the text disappearing in dialog boxes, like "Okay" "Change Directory" "Cancel" dialogue buttons on only some windows dialog boxes.
So that was irritating, and it happened after windows 8 decided it was time to scan and repair the hard drives for no apparent reason...
I reupdated and resynced things, which was just annoying, but then after I was finished, a few days later, the same fatal BSOD occurred. So I searched it, and yup, lo and behold, there are a TON of threads discussing the error and there is apparently no solution. Direct back and forths with MS lead to them suggesting that the person call level 2 tech support... Meaning there is no real fix, as they couldn't just describe a process. If there is a process, we must now assume it is ridiculous and overly complex.
So yeah, I installed Linux Mint 14 Nadia instead in protest (only issue I'm having is getting a custom resolution for my HDMI-out to my Vizio 37“ TV that has weird resolutions, no clue how to fix it, tried everything, except trading TVs with someone else that isn't using their TV as a monitor, lol), and will dual boot W7 when i get around to it. W8 looked and sort of felt nice, but it's just a sheen of bs, IMO. The restore features are a joke. I just really want a nandroid backup style backup system, that just works and is very straight forward and easy. If it could backup to NAS &/or cloud, that'd be even better. Maybe I'll learn to code and create one...

[Q] Linux (Ubuntu) on Note 8.0?

I am planning to buy a Note 8.0 and was thinking that the device, although not as big as the Note 10.1, but still equipped with an S Pen must be an "ideal"() device for running a chrooted Ubuntu.
Unfortunately, I have not read of anyone trying it out, and the device is not listed as supported on the LinuxOnAndroid web site.
However, as most of the components seem to be similar to those of the Note II or the Note 10.1, I was thinking that it must work on the Note 8.0 also.
Has any of you tried chrooting Ubuntu or an other Linux distribution on their Note 8.0 already? Curious to hear your impressions.:fingers-crossed:
I'am willing to do the same.. as I could see Linux port working with similar device as the Note 8.0.
I was thinking more about using a real linux installation (not through chroot) as it has been done on the Galaxy Note 10.1.
Even if both shares same hardware (Exynos 4412), I don't know if we can use same procedure as described in OpenSGN project.( not allowed to post link)
If I'm sure NOT* harming the device, I would like to give it a try
Working great!
Okay, I bought the Note 8 a few days ago, rooted and installed a chrooted Ubuntu using Complete Linux Installer (LinuxOnAndroid) already on day one. It's working great.
I have chosen the full Ubuntu 12.04 package, which already contains the Unity launcher, Libre Office and Gimp, to name only a few. I was curious to find out whether the Ubuntu Software Center was working and I could install additional apps, and indeed, everything worked as you would expect on a Desktop device. I installed Inkscape and now have a full-fledged office AND graphics editing suite on a mobile device, which is incredible. The only kind of bug that appeared was the constant appearance of an error message saying something about a system error, but I just clicked it away without any noticable consequences.
Without the S-Pen, the 8 inch screen would be a bit too small for all these little buttons, but with the S-Pen you can easily hit buttons and interact with the user interface nearly as easily as on a Desktop PC. Also, as the Note 8 has an USB OTG port that supports USB hubs, you could use the device as a full "Desktop PC" with mouse, keyboard and flash drives.
Moreover, Ubuntu does not even drain that much battery. I would have expected the device to get hot a little, but not even that happened.
I should note that everything was a bit slow due to the need to display the Ubuntu screen via a VNC viewer, but all in all it's really amazing what's possible on a mobile device.
Here are a few Screenshots:

Even Eclipse worked, but unfortunately, the Android Development Tools are not available for ARM.
The next step would be to natively run a full Linux distribution, but for my needs, the chrooted Ubuntu is enough.
Thanks for your impressions, screenshots look great.

Is it that we run ubuntu inside a sort of container in parrallel with android, and you need to VNC to it from android desktop to be able to display it?
If it is correct this should be slow indeed...
I would largely prefer native, or at least a port of ubuntu touch wich reuse android drivers but running on its own...
Here we have android system using power, + VNC slowing, not so good
But I may give a try, just to see it running..

Yes, it runs as a native process under Android, you have to connect to localhost via a VNC client. I just recently started using a VNC client called Jump, that makes using the Ubuntu interface even faster and fully supports the S-Pen (Hovering, Press S-Pen button for right click - quite cool)
Interestingly enough, it seems that the VNC connection is not the only thing that makes the process slow. I tested VNCing into a remote Mac, and the display reaction was a bit faster than with the local Ubuntu.

Worth trying then, seems like linux has a good support for Wacom devices (I see it natively in Gnome Parameters)
For 3D accel (which I'm notably looking for);I guess VNC isn't adapted,
Regarding Ubuntu Touch, it is said to be easy to port when CM 10.1 is available for the device.

I rather doubt it's possible to use the S-Pen with the Wacom driver over VNC. I saw the entry in the settings, but clicking on it only led to an error message. Do you know whether the native Linux on the Note 10.1 supports the S-Pen via the Wacom drivers?
As far as I understood, you cannot use Ubuntu desktop programs on Ubuntu touch (yet), which renders it more or less useless for me.

Seems like it is:
http://liliputing.com/2013/03/debia...-galaxy-note-10-1-with-pen-support-video.html
I didn't know Ubuntu Touch could not run common Linux programs....in that case it is less interesting indeed..
Would be cool to see this running on 8.0: http://docs.kali.org/armel-armhf/kali-linux-on-galaxy-note
I don't know how much modificiation there are to make it running on Note 8.0, both tablets (Note 10.1 & 8) share pretty much same hardware...
Regarding this dist; it has to be flashed with a special bootloader into recovery of the tablet, I would be tempted to load it with the 10.1 one just to see what happens... but don't have enough knowledge, to know what happens if recovery is messed up

I too am thinking of buying a note 8 to root and install ubuntu onto. I am still learning a lot of things and wondered if you wouldn't mind giving a little more in-depth details on what you did to get it to work. Thanks.
Essentially, I just downloaded Complete Linux Installer (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.zpwebsites.linuxonandroid) and followed the steps that are given in the app.

This really depends on what you want to use it for.
It's fast enough for text processors like OpenOffice, even graphic programs like Gimp or Inkscape. It would not make sense to use it for games or watching videos though.

Although you could theoretically use any ARM linux image (as far as I understand the matter), I'd recommend using Complete Linux Installer as the guys behind the project (LinuxOnAndroid) offer and maintain many different images that were explicitly built to be run on Android devices.

[Q] Rooting the Captivate Glide for an old WM6.1 newbie

Hello all and been awhile since I've been active in these parts.
This is probably a faux pas on several levels, but here I am. I used to be rather adept at rooting/ROMing/modding my smartphone years ago in the days when I was using HTC Windows Mobile phones, up through 6.1. Then my phone died, and I "upgraded" (several years late) to an early cheap Android 1(.2?) Pantech Crossover a few years ago. Given there was really no dev community for the Pantech, and I was relatively satisfied with the performance, I never even experimented with modding that phone. It lasted until present and served me well, but my wife just presented me with the Captivate Glide as an early Christmas present and so here I find myself, and somewhat out of the loop.
Given most of my experience is on outdated WM rooting, and it's been quite awhile, I'm looking to school myself on what I'm doing before I start messing around with the new Captiate Glide.
Can you point me to the do's and don'ts, resources, or newbie threads, and what-i-need-to-know-not-to-brick-my-phone links or threads before I dive into this? I have found some basic info thus far, and I guess I'm hoping for something more comprehensive for newbies, or any relevant info for someone who isn't up on the latest methods, tools, etc.
My apologies if I have looked over obvious resources. Children, work, family, and lack of time prevent me from finding everything I need by researching and sorting through gobs of info to learn the traditional way.
Thanks in advance.

OK, finally getting some time alone with my phone. I've successfully rooted! Now I'm ready to move on to a custom rom. I hope.
Look here is a thread I made http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2623635
[UPDATED][2014][How-to]Everything need to know about Captivate Glide
All new Roms ect.
Sent from my Kitkatified I927 running CM 11
So after a few hours of tinkering, I successfully flashed the cyanogen ROM you linked above... but the voice recognition didn't seem to be present? I expected a microphone button on the keyboard as on my stock 4.0.4 (which works, but requires a data/internet connection), but none was present, and couldn't find anything that indicated a way to use voice typing elsewhere. I couldn't seem to find anywhere to activate it or indicate it was on the ROM. Per the thread for the ROM, it says you needed to go into settings --> system --> hardware keys to make it active, but under system in settings there was no option for that. I went through the entire settings menu and couldn't find anything. And then I realized I didn't have my contacts backed up to the cloud (or SIM, apparently) anyway, so i rolled back to my stock rooted ROM at least for now in order to be able to transfer those over to the new ROM. And then lol I discovered that about 2GB was missing from my internal SD space, not leaving me enough free space to move my CoPilot (GPS) maps back to the phone.
Finally I figured out the CWD backup folder (duh) was what was hogging the space, so I'm copying that over to my PC to save for a rainy day and then will get everything back to rooted stock from before the ROM flash. I'll have to give it another go on a different day. Mostly I wanted to get rooted, and then try to run 4.3 to get the off-line voice typing and easy screenshots, so I'm yet to figure that out if you have any ideas (I didn't actually test the screenshot function, so that may have been working).
For voice(and OK Google in Google now) you have to install offline voice data (The only file I have is en-US) you have to do it manually
Its in my new thread. Then try settings>language and input>google voice typing.
Also screenshots work by pressing
Vol. down + power

Yeah, it's enabled. At least as far as I can tell. It's installed, I have the microphone when I go to google search. But it's not on the google keyboard, as you can see. There isn't anything listed about it in settings.... I think I'm missing something. I've installed/updated Google Keyboard & Google Voice Search...

OK, so now when I go into Google Keyboard settings there is an option to "activate voice key" or something like that... and now I discovered if I hold on the comma key (with the "..."), the 2 options that popup are a microphone key and a settings key... the settings key takes me to the google keybaord settings, and the microphone key does... nothing. I verified in the settings that the voice key is checked.
See screenshots. And thanks for your time.

There's the crux of my problem, under input methods there is no "Google Voice Typing" present. I only have Google Keyboard (and Swype, which I installed just to have something to change the input to other than Google and back to see if I could get the mic). See screenshot.

Fixed! Your screenshot did it. I had to install Google Search for the Google Voice Typing to show up... I guess I just assumed it was included with the ROM. Anyway, now I have the microphone key on my keyboard. Now I just have to extract the offline files to test that out.
