[Q] MTP Absolutely Sucks. How do I go back? - T-Mobile, Samsung Galaxy SIII

to the old days of plain 'ol USB Mass Storage?
I have CM 10.1 Nightly and KToonsez' latest kernel. I've always had the problem since I first got this phone, from CM9 to CM10.1, multiple kernels, that the only USB transfer mode is MTP and Camera. Well let me tell you, MTP sucks. Massively slow speeds, only 1 file operation at one time, and 75% of the time it gets stuck and file transfers fail.
All I want to do is mount my SD card to my computer and transfer files to it. Is there any way I can get the plain Mass Storage mode?
I could also settle for how to get USB Storage mount in TWRP, I haven't found such a setting yet though.

I've been thinking this, too. I'm assuming the apps on Google play would work, I used to use mount sd card or something for my G1, but I haven't tried on this phone.

I use wifi-explore app. MTP is often hit or miss for me. But WiFi-explore app does work well.

[Q] USB Mounting

For some reason, my phone will not give me the option to mount my SD card as a disk drive all of a sudden...
I'm using CM 7.0.2.1 with Tiamat 3.3.8 as my kernel. Anyone know how I might be able to fix it?? I'm trying to put KingdomRom on it but can't because I can't mount .
I've also tried a full wipe and reinstalling the ROM with a different kernel...and I'm still not getting anything. I've tried multiple USB cords as well.
I would try unmounting your SD card in Settings then reboot the phone.
Didn't work . I thought originally it might have something to do with the kernel, but I've changed to a different one and it still isn't working.
When you connect your phone to the computer, does the charging light come on? What happens when you tap the notification that says your phone is connected to the computer? Do you get the screen with the option to mount and it doesn't, or do you not get the notification at all?
Have you tried using something like Widgetsoid to toggle usb mount? I had a similar problem on Sense and using a widget to toggle mounting the phone as disk drive was the only way I could get it to work.
(from... Evo/MIUI/Tapatalk)
Also, what recovery are you using?

Using ClockworkMod. I just stupidly reformatted my SD card after reflashing my ROM, so now once I am able to redownload GApps, I'm gonna download one of the widgets (might try AutoSync, too) and see if I can make progress in the morning.
Update: Got Market back on, downloaded Widgetsoid, enabled USB Mount...and still nothing. I've tried on 2 computers now with different USB cables and nothing.
Is it saying that your phone is connected to your PC at all? It could be your USB port, or your cable is going bad. Try plugging it in to the computer and jiggling the plug near the phone's usb port and see if it tries to connect. If it does, you may have to move it around until you get it to connect and then be very careful not to move anything while transferring files. Also if you have wifi you can transfer files by using an app from the market called wifi file explorer. They have a free and a paid version. Does you phone connect when you mount it to the computer in recovery mode? Does the charging light come on when you plug it in to your computer? Really more info is needed to diagnose your problem. There are also widgets in the market that will allow you to mount the phones storage without unmounting the card from the phone. Maybe this will work for you. Maybe the card is going bad? Who knows, but hopefully some of my suggestions help. If all else fails, you could always do it the old fashioned way and power the phone off, take the card out and plug it directly into your computer via the adapter if needed.
Yes, I do receive a charge light when I plug it into the computers USB. Android just does not provide the option to mount as a disk drive.
I like the Wifi File Explorer Idea. It sounds like a good alternative. Thanks so much to everyone for their suggestions!

[Q] Computer not seeing SD.

Ive had the problem for a while, but didnt care but now i want to upload some new music... lol.
None of my computers (ive tried 4 different ones, 2 of which ive used to drop music on to the phone before) and none of them see the phone when i plug it in. I can make them see the SD card though in CWM recovery, but never the internal SD.
Anyone know how i can fix this?
Im running AOKP-40. Before i was on CM9. So its not the rom...
Maybe your sd is bad/corrupt did you try a format?

Cant be, it reads music and pictures off the SD just fine, the computer just isnt seeing it.
I just read another thread, and none of the solutions presented worked...
this just happened to me
weird tho, phone sees it, everything works, but not on pc
edit: I did a darkside cache wipe, and its back on, everthing is normal now
try it brosef
Tried it. No worky still. :/
Make sure you have the latest version of Samsung Kies installed and most importantly the required drivers should be installed.
Or
Go to Settings-Wireless and Network-USB utilities- (press the connect and plug ur phone to pc with the data cable)- then click "Connect USB mass storage.
It will be connected and Removable storage would be shown.

Ok. Darkside super wipe and reflash fixed it. Now for MOAR music :OD

USB Mass storage option ... gone?

I cant seem to find an option to use the Galaxy S4 as USB mass storage, only media device (MTP) or Camera (PTP) is available. Cannot find any USB options in the settings either.
How am I able to copy files from and to my SD card and/or phone HD?
I appreciate any helpful posts. Thank you!

with MTP my device doesnt show up in Mac, as well as my Sony TV or LG receiver. what to do?
Is there anyway to disable MTP and go back to mass storage? Also, is the SDCARD MTP as well?
Mass Storage is gone for good... and while it sounds bad, there's a good reason..
Using Mass Storage forces the storage partition (or external sdcard) to be unmounted by Android, so any data/apps/widgets on there are no longer available until you disconnect your device from your PC. Using MTP allows the data partition to remain mounted and available concurrently on both your device, and on your PC via USB.
1) No, you cannot get UMS back.
2) This belongs in Q&A.
3) For Macs, you will need this.

"there's a good reason" is somewhat subjective. To me the great benefit to the more general usb mass storage option is so you can connect the phone to any device as if it were a usb flash drive. No driver issues, no worries about camera or MTP mode, no Mac issues, no linux issues, no Windows issues ... it's just a usd flash drive and can be treated as such. I am ok with the side affect of auto-unmounting the sdcard from Android when I connect the phone to another device to use as noted USB drive.
Is there in fact any way this will ever come back?

There was an app someone made for the GS3 that did some filesystem trickery to expose the storage as UMS (needed root). I'm sure something like that will come around that works on the GS4 too.
I had the same issue until I installed Kies, no issues after that

How could anyone possibly know if it will come back, especially "in fact?" My guess is you would have to ask Samsung that question to get anything other than a guess or an opinion (which would be NO) but it's not "in fact" just "in an opinion."
I jumped from an S2 to the S4 and was also annoyed that USB mass storage wouldn't work either. Since I use Linux as my desktop, MTP is not an option "out-of-the-box". I therefor turned to an awesome app (that I heard about on this site!), Airdroid. Now I was able to quickly get an album/picture/book datastore onto a shiny new 32GB microSD! And yes, I know I could have put the microSD into a slot on my laptop, etc., but I shouldn't have to, just because I choose to use Linux!
I mean, its rather ironic not to be able to use Linux to connect to Linux (android), don't you think? If I'm completely wrong about this, please someone point me to the right path.
Thanks
There is a "hack" to allow the external to be read as UMS. Also, the internal sdcard is no longer yaffs2 its ext4 and only linux knows ext4. So if you were to use UMS, only a linux computer would "see" the sd card and nothing else.

elesbb,
That's awesome news! Thanks for the tip. I use opensuse (currently 12.3) with kde, will definitely make the necessary tweaks to get this going in dolphin.
Thanks again!
Ignore. Posted in wrong thread.
If you are rooted and busybox installed yes there are lot of apps on play store that can convert your externel SD Card to Mass storage.

[Q] PAC Rom 4.2.2 SD card external issues

I've been searching the forms for awhile and wanted to ask a question on the offical rom's thread for PAC rom for the T989 GS2. I've been flashing roms for a couple years now so I have some experience with trouble shooting, and need to get my post count up. Anyways here is the problem.
I love this Rom just to start with, however, I see that a few have had issues transferring files PC to external SD or even on the PC Internal to External. I also have seen that it is a kernal issue within CM So i flashed Cerux's kernal. That helped it a bit from the phone from freezing, however, it still has issues. I am going to just re-flash the rom with the kernal and see it that helps. But, I'd like to know if there is any other way of fixing this issue. I'd hate to find a different rom because I love all the features on this. Any suggestions is helpful.
Sounds like the same issue I and a few others are having. When using usb mass storage and trying to transfer files the transfer hangs for a bit then my phone freezes up. I had to go into storage settings and enable MTP. Doesn't fix the mass storage issue but at least I can transfer files.

[Q] Error Transfering Files

Ok well first hello this is my first thread!
I'm having problems transfering files to my S4 (M919) on both internal and external SD, the issue is when im transfering files bigger than 1GB just before it finishes I get the messeage "the device has either stopped responding or has been disconnected", I looked for someone with a similar problem here in the forums and found that maybe enabling mass storage instead of MTP could solve this and it didn't work, I was trying to copy a 4.3GB file to my external sd in mass storage mode and now a message pops up saying that theres not enough space and file cannot be copied when there is 29.3GB free on the SD and only reads my external and not the internal memory can someone please help I'm getting tired of this I can't even copy a file to my phone, thanks.
Also the phone is rooted with clockwork touch 6.0.3.2, I have tried different USB ports and different computers and its all the same.

I assume you're using the cable that came with the phone? I only ask because I can't transfer a TouchWiz ROM with any other cable than the stock one; I'll get the same error as you. Also, I don't know if you're keeping the screen on during transfer, but try that as well.

Yes I'm using stock cable and the same thing keeps happening just 5 seconds before finishing the transfer, and yes keeping the screen on and it doesn't make a difference.
