Morning all,
Question, Got a T-Mobile Xperia S that was successfully unlocked using a code a bought from T-Mobile, phone works fine on Vodafone, calls, internet etc etc, except i can't tether using it, on WIFI or USB, my tariff includes tethering and it works perfectly on both a Nexus 4 and an non network locked Xperia S, so the issue is definately the phone. I've tried changing the APN settings, but i'm wondering if T-Mobile do something to block tethering on the phone itself, i've read that T-Mobile may be using a "hidden APN" setup on tethering.
The sony boot unlocker site won't work so looks like i might have to try and unlock it trying it in the way detailed in http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2207212 (never unlocked a bootloader before).
But just wondered if anyone else has seen this? IS it worth trying to debrand the phone with a UK generic image, to see if the hidden APN thing is true? will a lock bootloader allow me to debrand the phone.

I have a wonderful AT&T r800at. The bootloader is unlocker, and it's rooted. Can anyone please help me with the tethering? I have a Acer A500 tab that I want to share the internet with. I've tried various wifi tethering apps but none seem to work. I don't care if it's wifi, bluetooth, or wired tethering I just really want some advice on what I need to do.
Please help!

Have you tried Barnacle? It's worked on every Android phone I've owned.

I have tried that one actually. No luck.
Don't you need a tethering plan for AT&T? I heard they were really cracking down on the people who used it without a plan.

Barnacle needs root. If you are rooted it works great on the Play. No plan required
It's your bloated att firmware you have. They lock that feature in there firmware. I have att play and flashed to r800a generic 2.3.3. Under settings/Sony Ericsson/connectivity. You can enable option and then connect with a USB or select hotspot. You don't need a tethering plan but a data plan. Beware it goes through you limited data fast.
You don't need root or your bootloader unlocked either to use this option.

I agree with Aranium. You just need a generic rom(in other words-DEBRAND) And an unlimited internet plan(NOT tethering). I know this, because I do this myself and as of right now there is no data cap on unlimited post-paid plan even though they throttle the network. The stock AT&T Roms with all the bloatware also have a lock on the tethering/hotspot function in the Rom that asks you to dial 611 to purchase the upgrade to your plan. If you want to keep an eye on your data usage after you debrand just download 3g watchdog from the market. My opinion-its your data to do what you want with it, even if that means sending to the less fortunate & needy devices.lol
Hello I have an odd problem. I have an unlocked ZL which has been working fine on AT&T in the US. I travel to London a lot and have the international data option on my account and has always worked fine with my other phones. However after arriving in London my phone is stuck on Everything Everywhere (EE) and they don't have a roaming agreement with AT&T. This would be an easy problem to solve by manually selecting a different network but this is my problem. On my phone network selection, below, APN is not showing up. I originally thought this may have been disabled by the original network (Indonesia I believe) so I flashed the US generic firmware and Nordic but nothing I do makes it show up. Anyone else have this problem or solution?
Thanks

Its DISABLED by your AT&T sim not the phone. If you notice by putting another Sim (Non AT&T) You can then use network search. Also ANY AT&T Branded Phone Network Search is LOCKED. I know your ZL is not AT&T branded but your SIM is which is causing it to lock it. My disapers when using an AT&T Sim, But when putting a T-Mobile USA sim or Orange UK sim BAM Network search shows up..
Also I think AT&T has Agremeants with EE , as EE can roam on AT&T here in the USA, EE is basically ORANGE UK, If they did not have aggremeants your phone WOULD NOT connect to the network. Make sure your data roaming is checked..
Thanks you are correct. Crazy considering they wanted me to manually select a network other than EE.
They're support is sometimes ehh. If they had never been out of the county they probably won't know. How is it over there . Always wanted to go.

Greetings,
Purchased a T-mobile samsung galaxy s 4.
I unlocked it. Tried to use Red Pocket mnvo and there is voice but no data.
So I rooted it and removed the T-mobile data usage apk and still no data.
I have spent hours trying to get data to work.
What more needs to be done to get this phone to operate on a Red Pocket or Straight Talk mnvo using AT&T towers?
I use the same settings that work in my other unlocked android phones and no luck.
What APK is responsible for preventing data to work?
Do I need to flash a new customized rom to get this to work?
Has anyone else gotton an AT&T mnvo to work on this T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S 4?
I am still within my return period so I need to find a solution or send this phone back.
I was orginally going to use T-mobile because they seem to promise 4g here but when I got it I find out there is only 2g speeds where I live.
My post won't help .. but this is very interesting as I am going to do the same thing.
I'll definitely watch this thread.
Is any one else out there getting Data connection with other carries after unlocking and rooting there T-Mobile Samsung galaxy s 4?
Any ideas on the cause of no data?

You need to go to mobile settings and change the apn to the network you are trying to connect to also I think the phone has to be network unlocked
unlock isn't network unlock?

I did change the network to the one I am trying to connect to.
Also, I went to cellunlocker and got an unlock code. I thought that unlocks the network? The data has worked on all my previous samsung galaxy's after using the unlock code except for this phone.
Please HELP someone!
Hi,
I bought a Samsung Note 2 from T-mobile last year with the tethering service (paid). The tethering and mobile hotspot worked fine.
Now, I am in Asia, and so I requested for a SIM unlock code from T-mobile, and it doesn't work; even T-mobile gave up and asked me to pay one of those unlock companies to unlock, and then T-mobile will reimburse.
After researching online, most unlock companies require to revert back to T-mobile factory Android 4.1.1 ROM.
Then, I did so. But rather than paying for someone to unlock for me, I followed the instruction of some online post to bring up the debug screen to run "network initialliz" (right, weird spelling).
I successfully unlocked my phone to use a local SIM card; then, I did the software upgrade through the "about device" screen to Android 4.1.2; but then I am not able to use tethering and mobile hotspot.
When I check tethering, it just unchecks itself without any error message on the screen.
When I slide to turn on mobile hotspot, it just slides back to "off".
I have done factory reset, and wiping cache from the recovery screen. Nothing works.
Then, I brought my phone to the carrier shop to check the APN settings, and it is correct because the sale guy had a Note 2 with the same setting and it worked for him.
Then, I took my SIM card to try on my sister's S3, and both tethering and mobile hotspot work.
Any idea how I can fix it without rooting?
I don't mind doing something more technical (as I worked as a software engineer for a phone manufacturer before...flashing hundreds of phones there).
If I post at the wrong place, I apologize; and please let me know where to post.
Thanks in advance.
I have similar experiences. I use an app like Hotspot Control or Portable Wi-Fi Hotspot to enable it while I am traveling.

Thanks for your confirmation.
Did you unlock your phone through the hidden debug menu? Or an unlock company? Or with the unlock code from T-mobile?
T-mobile said that the way I unlocked "might" not unlock "deep enough".
I bought the unlock code for my HTC desire 526 locked on verizon. but i couldn't use it because my phone never ask for unlock code even when i put unsupported sim cards..THE phone is locked to verizon USA and i have tired all the GSM simcard that i can lay my hands on and i have change the netwrok setting form CDMA to GSM but still no luck
Is their any special way that am supposed to push the unlock code into the phone???
thanks in advance
Verizon 4G phones are SIM unlocked as mandated by the FCC.
It won't ask for a SIM unlock code anywhere, but it should work on other carriers. I bought mine and used it on T-Mo US from day 1, then switched to Iusacell/AT&T Mexico and had no issues. All I had to do was manually configure the APNs and deal with the Verizon bloatware.
What error messages do you get when you put in a non-Verizon SIM? I only get the SIM card is not from Verizon Wireless message but other than that the phone works fine.
hot spot
I have the Verizon 526 using att sim and works great only I can not get mobile hot-spot to work do you have an issue or know of a fix to it

I was reading up on this issue earlier. Would have to figure out how to disable the Verizon hotspot app and use a third party app most likely. Verizon programs account authorization into this phone's tethering app.
On a device without native tethering enabled, I was able to temp root, use chainfire's hotspot control app to enable authentication over WiFi, but because there was no native support on that phone, I had to install a proxy server on it to get traffic to pass back & forth between the cloud and connected wireless clients.
Not sure if that helps, but it's a place to start. I'm going to try building a rom for the desire 526, so maybe a lot of these vzw annoyances will no longer be an issue
