[Q] Kernel List - Sprint Samsung Galaxy S III

Is there a post listing all the kernels available and what they do, and what was removed. I like the stock kernel for it's media capabilities in playing mkv files with subtitles. I don't want to lose that if I change ROMs that comes with a kernel.
Thanks
Xan Steel

No such list exists. As far as I'm aware, here on XDA Roms, Kernels, and mods are so frequently updated that any sort of "comprehensive" list would be outdated before you even finish making it. It's a problem I like having, because it means that we have a LOT of devs that are actively contributing their content on here. I'd much rather have that problem than only having one or two devs who can push updates once a month (I write this as I cry over my Asus Transformer TF101).
That being said, at this time are only a few kernels that are widely used here on XDA. I'll link a couple of them and you can go to each thread individually. I have only really used the "stock" that comes with whatever ROM I'm using. I'm currently trying BMS on LiquidSmooth, but the verdict is still out on whether I like it more than the stock LiquidSmooth kernel.
Anyways, here is my list (in the order that I did the search of):
BMS Kernel (only AOSP 4.2.x Roms)
Ktoonsez' KT747 (TW 4.1, TW 4.1.2, AOSP 4.1, AOSP 4.2) Q&A Thread Here.
ZEUS Kernel [Deviant Development] (TW Roms)
dkp - d2spr & friends (only AOSP 4.2.x Roms)
AGAT's Kernel (TW Roms)
DeviantKernel (TW Roms)
Hellfire Rom (4.2.2 Rom with Hellfire Kernel, couldn't find link to Kernel itself)
The kernel which must not be named. It's a touchy subject here on XDA, so I won't mention the name in this post, but PM me and I might tell you the name of it so you can google search it. I haven't looked for it for a while and don't even know if it's still being developed.
Now, as I said above, this list was created with a simple search and I have not looked through each and every thread. I am obviously not qualified to comment on each kernel's quality/feature-set. But it'd be best to read the OP and the last 3-4 pages of each thread to see what they offer.
Hope this helps your search!
edit. And just a note: All Roms come with a Kernel. If a TW Rom does not state which kernel it's using, it's probably just using the stock one from Samsung (or one they developed themselves). Along the same thread of thought, any AOSP Roms based on CM10.1 will most-likely be using the CM kernel (or their own). What you're asking about is custom kernels that are either included as an option in some Roms (like TPR and MOAR, etc.). These custom kernels are typically built for one of two things: speed or battery life. It's typically stated in the OP what it's built for. I'd say make a nandroid backup and take each one for a test-drive for a couple of days. If you don't like it, nandroid back and try a different one. No harm, no foul. Happy flashing!

Nice list; thanks for taking the time to compile it. much respect bro (hehehe ... sorry i just read the "i like this forum but i don't" post and I couldn't help myself)

I think it's safe to say anthrax, you just can't get it anymore. They pulled the links completely.

I was trying to be a little funny on the Anthrax kernel. Guess I missed the mark, haha.
I know we can't get it on XDA anymore (obviously). Is it still being developed and is it still available on the their website?

I searched it up a couple days ago, and I heard that the links had been pulled because of GPL compliance issues.

1) the links are no longer pulled, and 2)anthrax is definitely my personal favorite

anyone have a link to the 100% stock kernel. Can't seem to find it.

You can take the kernel files (system/lib/modules) out of one of the stock rom zips and put it in the zip of a kernel only zip, that would make you a flashable stock kernel.

Work from banned users are not allowed on XDA.
Also Anthrax source is private as is the website hosting it. XDA to remain GPL compliant requires kernel source to be available.
As mentioned, Google it, join the site and get access to it and the developer as well for support.

It's not a quick Google of the kernel name or his name + GPL will show you why. In short he's in a legal dispute over GPL compliance with the actual GPL compliance people.

Being GPL compliant is a big deal. It's one reason I have never released any of my kernels. Some of the stuff I haven't been able to completely track back to the original source and some stuff I'm not even sure where it came from since it was hand me down modified source from other people I've lost contact with. Sometimes I'm just too disorganized to make sure I have my ass covered. With my real job I can't risk even having an allegation of doing something wrong.

no I don't think so, I just looked at what folders/files a zip contains that only flashes a kernel.
So what I've done before is copy that folder from the ROM zip to get me back to the kernel the ROM came with. This is what I was suggesting to them

That's a really good idea. I can't believe I never thought of that myself. Kudos. I'll be using this in the past (I had always restored a nandroid backup, which Adel might be a good idea). But in the future, I'm going to look at what's being installed and do a little investigation. Should be fun and informative!

[Q] Are kernels bound to specific versions of CWM?

All,
I have a question regarding what kernels are 'compatible' with various versions of CWM. The reason I ask is because the CWM threads I see are usually bundled with a specific kernel, and without finding specific info about that, I'm led to assume that there's a dependency there.
Until yesterday I was running Bubby's stock rooted kernel. FWIW this is my 'upgrade' path:
Zedo V3(Bad LOS) -> Bubby's stock pulled EB30 with root retained - Great performance, maybe 3 instances of LOS in the 2 months that I've been running it.
Perusing the dev section I saw that NoCIQ was available but required CWM to flash. A search for CWM yielded a few threads. Wanting to have a rooted, and not stock kernel, I settled on the LostKernel/CWM5 package. After a few hiccups getting back to no yellow triangle, etc. Things seemed to be running fine. And they still are...mostly.
The one difference is that on my way in to work this morning - I ride train that passes through several 3g/4g coverage areas so it will switch back and forth between them periodically, including a tunnel where ALL service is temporarily lost.
I noticed that when going through a small area where there is no data coverage at all(this is typical), that when I got back into a coverage area that I had complete LOS! Toggling airplane mode brought data back but to regain cell service I had to reboot my phone.
This is, again, after 2 months with virtually no LOS, travelling the same route every day. One instance is not a reason to panic but having it the first day of using a kernel that's supposed to reduce LOS has me a little concerned.
Now to the point of my babbling. What I want to know is if I would be able to put Bubby's kernel back onto my phone and still have it be compatible with the CWM5 that was installed via chris's lostkernel package?
Thanks in advance for any help.
The kernel consists of a linux kernel + an initramfs (which is basically an initial filesystem but mapped to cache memory, so technically part of the kernel)
On Samsung, the same kernel+initramfs is used for both Android and Recovery.
kernal+initramfs is what people around here call a zImage. When you flash a kernel/zImage, you get whatever recovery came in the initramfs of that kernel/zImage.
So CWM is not necessarily tied to a particular version of the kernel, you can match different versions of CWM with different kernels. However kernels (as the term is used for Samsung phones) do come bundled with a particular recovery, so you flash the kernel you get that recovery, whether that be stock or some version of CWM.
CWM/kernel
Heya.
Lostkernel is from source. Thus it will reduce your LOS but notget rid of it. Sofar for me the only kernel with CWM that is from a stock pulled kernel that has no LOS so far for me is chris41g pulled/CWM. Sorry for not adding link but just look in development and you should see it.
Also this is the Dev.section, you should post your questions in Q&A.
Hope this helps ya.

yes that's it. Are u on ek02 or eg30? U could still use ek02 so yes that is the stock kernel with cwm. U can also over clock the stock kernel with an app called tegrak. It is a paid app in the market. I highly recommend it for overclocking stock kernels.

To clarify, do I need to install the EK02 update before I flash the EK02 kernel?
Also, the EK02 update is not released yet, correct?

It's a Samsung architecture thing - kernels don't overwrite recovery, they INCLUDE recovery within the initramfs. Change the initramfs, you change the included recovery.
On other devices (including Snapdragon-based Samsungs and Tegra-based Samsungs), there is a separate recovery partition/image that has its own kernel, but not Exynos/Hummingbird based devices.

Nobody is 'ok', if you read the first few posts, you'll see that I get 'reprimanded' point made, and taken. Now besides that does that mean that the thread can't be responded to and the help given? Does that make the thread non worthy of a response? I'd move it if I could. Should I go create the same thread in Q&A and start over?

I can't believe more people aren't recommending it. Anyhow, got a thanks from me for the same reason. Chris, I am wondering if people are hesitating because they think they wont get the same performance as they do on your stock repacked with CWM5. The performance is as good with the great recovery

EK02 modem/kernel
No youdo not have to flash the EK02 update to flash the kernel. You can flash the kernel first. Actually you can flash in any order. Kernel/modem/update. I sofar have EK02 kernel and modem installed but have not flashed the ROM update yet.
Also this is not a official release from sammy yet. But have it from good sources that this will be the final build they will release soon.

I dont get that, his work is used in several peoples custom kernels, are they not allowed to?
Also from what I see he publishes his work on git and gives permission for other devs to use it so whats not being shared? Im not arguing to say hey lets allow it just to understand what hes doing/done thats wrong.
Disclaimer:
TripNDroid Mobile Engineering accepts no claims for anything that may happen to youre device because of flashing our software. This is youre own responsibillity.
First, do not use my work without explicit permission! Secondly, XDA doesnt want my work on there "forum" therefore you dont have permission to use my work as a base and then post it on XDA. It will still be my work! Neither you have permission to use my work as a base for MIUI roms and then post it on XDA. Kernel source is available on my github
https://github.com/TripNRaVeR
well he shares his kernel sources now.
but i am not sure if you can do that hamdir.
Best way would be to ask him .
That's kind of my point his works there on git, and I know other dev's have asked for and received permission from him to use parts of his code in their own work.
He clearly is trying to distance himself from what ever the issue was that sparked all this, and is saying don't put his stuff on XDA because they wont like it. It seams to me like he's trying to be part of the overall developer community without antagonising XDA. It doesn't seam like he's doing anything wrong to warrant such a ban, that's this bit I don't understand what happened in the past etc.
XDA and TripNRaVeR have been in a dispute for a while, I think it's best not to post his work on the forum until everything's settled down.
Although it's probably an honest mistake on Hamdir's behalf, but there's a good reason that his work isn't published on XDA.
exactly his quote shows he doesnt mind sharing he just blames it on XDA
the idea behind this thread was to post his kernel repacked + modules to work on sense ROMs
anyway we will need someone from the mods to tell us how to proceed next
I'm not seeing what the problem is, the kernel is accompanied with the source/github.
.
is not necessary change modules??
I think it just don't like to share his ROM. He has made the kernel sources available so others can use it. so I think it's fine.
modules uploaded
now a mod can delete this or lock it, its up to him and xda top guys
no point in this discussing this any further

[HOWTO] Port N7100 ROMs to I317 and N7105

I spent the entire day yesterday trying to make Android Revolution HD work on my I317. At the end of the day, success ! and here is how:
Please do not experiment with this stuff if you're not familiar with partitions and the way things work. You do run the risk of bricking your device permanently if you don't know what you're doing. I'll write this so that developers can start porting their ROMs to the LTE variants.
The two devices are identical except for the modem (and rild files) and the GPS initialization at bootup.
1. You'll need to rewrite the updater-script in most CWM flashable ROMs to make sure.. again, MAKE SURE that you do not flash anything else except /system /data and the boot partition. Overwriting your modem partition with a modem from the N7100 phone or the bootloader partitions will blow up your phone. You've been warned ! The partition labels and numbers are identical so you won't have to change that.
2. Make sure you bundle a kernel (boot.img) from one of I317/N7105 (depending on which device you own). Obviously we're talking about TW kernels here so for example stock JB kernels or Perseus will do just fine. Do not flash boot.img kernels from the N7100 section.
3. You'll need to add and remove a bunch of userland library files from your device. I won't attach these files here but you can grab them from any I317/N7105 ROM:
Files to ADD/REPLACE (Yes, every single one counts as they're dynamically linked). The stuff in /system/bin are started by the initramfs in the kernel so add them all in as well:
Code:
./system
./system/bin
./system/bin/qcks
./system/bin/sec-ril
./system/bin/qmuxd
./system/bin/efsks
./system/bin/diag_uart_log
./system/bin/netmgrd
./system/bin/gsiff_daemon
./system/bin/ks
./system/bin/rild
./system/bin/qmiproxy
./system/bin/secstarter
./system/etc
./system/etc/gps.conf
./system/lib
./system/lib/hw
./system/lib/hw/audio.primary.smdk4x12.so
./system/lib/hw/gps.default.so
./system/lib/hw/audio_policy.smdk4x12.so
./system/lib/libril-qc-qmi-1.so
./system/lib/libnetmgr.so
./system/lib/libaudio-ril.so
./system/lib/libloc_api_v02.so
./system/lib/libril-qcril-hook-oem.so
./system/lib/libqdp.so
./system/lib/libdsutils.so
./system/lib/libqmiservices.so
./system/lib/libqmi_client_qmux.so
./system/lib/libloc_adapter.so
./system/lib/libqmi_common_so.so
./system/lib/libqdi.so
./system/lib/libqmi.so
./system/lib/libcsd-client.so
./system/lib/libloc_eng.so
./system/lib/libqmi_encdec.so
./system/lib/libqcci_legacy.so
./system/lib/libqmi_cci.so
./system/lib/libssaudio-client.so
./system/lib/libidl.so
./system/lib/libril.so
./system/lib/libqmi_csi.so
./system/lib/libdiag.so
./system/lib/libdsi_netctrl.so
./system/lib/libgps.utils.so
./system/lib/libgps.so
To remove !!! Moi importante !
Code:
./system/lib/hw/gps.exynos4.so
If you don't remove that GPS exynos4 file, HAL will load it and never the gps.default.so file so your gps won't work. Took me three friggin hours to figure out.
4. Lastly, you'll need to change build.prop so that it loads our RILD files instead of the N7100's:
Code:
replace
rild.libpath=/system/lib/libsec-ril.so
with
rild.libpath=/system/lib/libril-qc-qmi-1.so
5. ???
6. Profit.
When I get sometime, I'll try to port CM10 from the N7100 tree. Done.
im going to try this I hope it works thanks

I don't think that will be possible until we have an cm10 kernel built for our device first, can't switch in a TW kernel for their cm10 kernel without possibly bricking our phones
And to the OP of this thread:
Great work man, I know they were having a little trouble getting the roms to port on our IRC channel, hopefully this opens the flood gates for more rom possibilities :good:

I'm going to port the standard CM10 that is available at github.com/cyanogenmod Once this is completed, then we can incorporate that to all AOSP based roms.
The kernels are actually pretty close to each other. (have a look at the defconf for details). What's different is the initramfs and the userland binaries/libraries. I'll have a look at it but I need to get this audio going on TW roms first.

Thats, what I thought, but he said he was gunna try CM10...I've been trying to learn more about Kernels all morning, and I understand we have a Qualcomm modem, but idk what would be needed to build a kernel for say CM...any thoughts?
Sorry for the OT OP.

lol. it'll be a while til we get CM10 running. I've just quickly looked at the differences and have an idea where to go from here but that's about it.
It all depends on how much free time I get here at work.
Madmack, you sir are a freaking genius. Now I'm glad I didn't get the international version cause I have lte in my area. Can't wait for more ported roms and aosp goodness. Thank you sir!

I actually pulled it from a N7105 LJ4 Rom. Download the stock LJ4 ROM, it should include it. If not, well, then don't add it and see what happens.

Repacked kernels naming convention

Oké guys,
Little suggestion.
Seeing all that boot.img popping up like boot_repacked and it's unclear what it is.
Please use the following format:
kernelxxx-romxxx.img
So it will always be clear what it is and where for.
Also perhaps someone is willing to maintain a all in one repacked kernel thread with all repacked kernels for different roms in one spot?
Volunteers?
If necessary I can provide hosting with a ftp account on whiskey103.nl or androidrevolution.nl
Thanks

well i for one can do that..i wouldn't mind... i got the time on my hands and well i already maintaining threads similar so i do not see the problem...if people want to post the repacked versions here for the rom then all i can do is tidy it up in the first and second post and that way everyone can get it here from this thread...so that way no more repacked versions all over the forums they would be here as you say

i am willing to help you with it :good:
Oké, so you open a dedicated repacked kernels thread?
I know we have a few for specific ROM and/or kernel.
But not a "one stop shop" collection thread.
I will pm you and talk details.

I do have one for NCX.
maybe someone could have it for the 2-3 other kenels out there? Like, One kernel per person? Would be much easier to manage IMO
So, NCX for me, XM for ??, ETC?

Yes I know you have one for NCX and the collection thread could easily link to that.
But iam aiming at a "all in one" but most importantly I wanted the naming convention though as I see all kind of boot-repacked flying around and it's confusing.

so what are you saying about naming convention? Just name a thread like this
"All in one Kernel repack collection thread for all JB Sense Roms"
if someone can come up with a better name feel free to mention it..
But like i said..I open the thread. People start posting the repacks in the thread and we just organize the first page of the thread with all the necessary repacks with each individual rom.....Something like this
Renovate Rom:
XM95repacked.img
Modules
and just carry on the same as we go along....look let me open the thread and i know what i am going to do...i organized my own threads in order i can do the same here

this is the naming convention im actually using on my online repacker :highfive:
and my main reason for creating it to start with is... having a searchable database of very kernel there is
and since this is what you're trying to do,
i'd like to ask those thread maintaining repackers to ask me for an account on my site, so that they can approve kernel images,
so that they can appear on the search.

devs complete this kernel

Hello friends
i am uploading the boot.img of stock kernel 2.6.35 i want the other files which are required to make a flashable .zip kernel
please provide requried files and make a zip and post to me
please i request u all
You don't order devs to make something for you.
Also please stop spammimg the development thread, your topics are not development related rather q/a threads

Edit: OP, link to source code is needed if you upload a kernel

definitely and Jonny asking for a source code is awkward, since the source is from samsung website and sammys source cannot even boot when not modded

let me explain to you why u got so many negative feedback,
1. you posted on development section a backup of a stock kernel (what were u developing?)
2. you want devs to test a stock kernel? (what for?) you have stock kernel when u bought the phone?
3. if you want anyone to test a kernel, you should also upload the source(if it was a custom kernel)
4. You spammed development section by posting a thread which only contains boot.img and the other with your so called flashable zip
5. you act so RUDE, as if you are ordering people around here(what you are trying to do is very3 ancient news, use search button?)
6. you should have searched before doing all the actions above..there were kernel flashers by mai77 method or by faqbly method, and you can get stock boot.img by going to dokys stock ROMs to be flashed via odin,
7. DONT SPAM every reply, there is a button called multi quote
(DONT FEEL BAD, XDA IS A VERY WELCOMING PLACE)
[JUST KNOW YOUR PLACE AND DONT ACT SO RUDE]

hey ronnie iam sorry
thanx for telling me about my mistakes
i will remember these in future
Even if you post a stock kernel binary, still needs source or a link to the source (ie, opensource.samsung)...
As for it not booting, that's Samsung's problem
