[Q] Some Newb Questions on going from Rooted Stock to Cyanogen

hello,
I rooted back in 1/2011 using Unrevoked3.
From there I changed from clockwork to amon-ra, installed busybox v1.17.1, as well as ROM Manager
v3.0.0.7. At that time I did a Nandroid backup (selected: boot, system, data, recovery, wimax, & android_secure )
From there I left it as a stock ROM with the following:
Hboot 0.97.0000, Build # 3.29.651.5,
Android 2.2
Baseband Version: 2.15.00.09.01,
Kernel Version: 2.6.32.15-ge2fb08e [email protected] #11,
Software : 3.29.651.5,
Hardware Version 3,
pri version: 1.77_003
prl version: 60671
Now I haven't really followed all of the ROM tweaks, variants, and developments over the past year. The evo is starting to get a bit sluggish...so I figured an update and a change would be good...I plan on going from STOCK to current stable cyanogen.
I think that I could restore the apps and such with titanium (if I ensure that 'system data migration' is enabled) however I would think that it would be best to start off fresh....
I would like to keep my text messages.
I have been scouring cyanogen forums, xda, and such... there is alot of conflicting/not updated information. I am probably over analyzing, just being cautions.
Question 1: should I have to update ROM Manager, Busybox, or AmonRa? (they are same version from when I rooted) <my guess is no, but I am unsure if there is some major bug that was fixed, especially with respect to AmonRa>
General Order:

I have titanium pro, but there settings seem a bit overwhelming.

Question 2: what is the best way to restore my texts?
I was thinking the following:
- First - delete all folders on sdcard except nandroid / TitaniumBackup
- Second - sync google contacts/calendar
- third - go to the market and install appbrain to re-sync applications that I like
- fourth- use titanium to restore text messages com.android.mms-FILENAME.properties (and .tar.gz)
Question 3: I am assuming that this is the only file required to restore my SMS/Text messages, am I correct?
or does cyanogen use a different application?
Question 4: is there anything critical that I am missing?

Apps are fine to be restored with Titanium, that's what it was made for. System data, no. NEVER backup and restore system data between different roms.

Always update is there are updates available. 99% of the time, updates only make things better.

Pretty much. Put rom zip on root of sd card, boot into recovery, make a Nandroid Backup, wipe data/cache/dalvik, flash new rom, reboot. I'm almost positive the cm7 zip comes with gapps, you shouldnt have to flash those separately. Radios can be flashed anytime.

Again, SMS Backup and Restore. Simple app, one click to backup and one click to restore.

You dont need to delete things off the sd card unless you need the space. And you can use Titanium to backup and restore texts, but not if you are switching from a Sense rom to an AOSP rom.

Just start off fresh and forget the messages. Latest amon-ra is 2.3 and get rid of rom manager

None of the CM zip files, atleast none that I have ever flashed, come with gapps already bundled together. I've always had to flash them separately. Also, reflash your kernel after flashing your radio. Some people say this is a must and some people say its all hoopla. I always do it just to be on the safe side.

You don't need to delete anything off of the SD card but you do need to make a backup of your SD card beforehand. The very first time I rooted and flashed a custom ROM my entire SD card got wiped out somehow. I'm still not sure why since flashing a ROM doesnt write to the SD card. Either way, I lost everything that I had on there before. I've been doing incremental backups of my SD card ever since. Again, better safe than sorry.

Flashing roms

Hi everyone,
I got a question. Is it a must to wipe before flashing a rom? For example, I'm on a rom and i want to flash another rom. Why is it a must to wipe it? What happens if I don't wipe it and flash a new rom?

Its not a must but its highly recommended if you don't sometimes you'll get bootloops, sometimes you'll get random crashes and apps not working or you could get very lucky and everything might work fine. You should at least wipe the /cache partition, you won't lose any data.

if you are on the same rom and the dev updates then most of the times no it is no need to update. if you are trying different roms though then yeah best to do is wipe. if you go into ARHD thread in the first page there is a script called superwipe. download that and flash it before you flash a new rom and that will do all the wipes for you. or just do it the old fashion way in recovery and reason why to wipe sometimes so you do not have old system data from previous roms

Also make sure 100% you have your Rom on your sd as you can't mount sd in recovery and after running there is no system.

And also a backup..that is the most important thing...went through a lot of threads that i read and most of the people on some threads ask on how to restore using RUU cause they do not have a backup of their stock rom..So please always make a backup my friend

It's not. They call that a "dirty flash". I've never done it but I've heard that it's not advised.

I want to flash a new rom, but i don't want to use titanium backup to restore my apps, thats to much time. And if I wipe it, my settings will lost. So, i don't want to do it. But it seems that I have to do it, otherwise i'll get some errors and bootloops etc. I thank you all for your fast reply. I'll wipe my phone

A nandroid backup. If I do it while on the old rom, can I restore it on the new rom? not an updated rom, just another rom of another developer..

contacts you can save them if you have a google account my friend. regarding backing up apps with Titanium backup if you have the Pro version it is all a matter on a few clicks. so my advise would be get it if you do not have the Pro version

Yeah thats fine, I usually flash the old rom first then restore the backup when coming from cm9 or miui to stock to avoid bootloops etc.

Going from 4.12 to 4.2 Titanium backup

I am going to install AOSP R5 Jelly Bean 4.2 JOP40C + Kernel v3.0.51 Linaro on my phone. i will be coming from 4.12 and doing a Titanium backup of the apps. I know now that data gets moved to the sdcard/0 folder. After initial setup how would I go about restoring all the apps. Would it just be a case of moving the bacup folder to the root of the sd card and then would it be seen by TB?

Basically you need to first backup on Titanium (which you did already). then format and flash the new rom. The files will still be on the storage partition. So now in the new rom open play store and download the app titanium backup again, and choose batch restore. it will install the apps from yoru backup one by one. Also make sure you have check in security to install 3rd party apps.
This method only works if your current 4.12 is already bootloader unlocked. if you are unlocking bootloader for the first time it erases your storage. in that case i dont know what to do

Right now Titanium Backup doesn't work on 4.2, so you might want to wait until the devs update it.

Installing CM10 on Galaxy S3...first timer

This is my first custom flash off stock. I have actually had some experience flashing due to accidently flashing from LH9 to LG1, which doesn't work. So I had to install TWRP, do a factory reset, root it, and install LH9 from there.
But I plan on trying out CM10 and I have a few question.
A) Can I just flash CM10 in ROM Manager since it is built in?
B) How can I keep my apps, app data, account data, folders,settings...etc? I have both CWM Pro and Titanium Backup Pro installed.
C) Is there anything that is worse in CM10 than Touchwiz?
D) If I don't like CM10, I can go into CWM ROM Manager and just restore my Backup, correct?

To be honest you need to flash it and give a shot and see what you think, everybody loves something different.
Download from the cm10 build from the link in the xda thread and also get the 10/12 gapps.
Boot to recovery and make a NANDROID BACKUP!
When you install, you will need to do a full wipe.(Wipe Data/Wipe Cache/Wipe Dalvik/Format System in that order to be safe
Flash the cm10 rom and the flash the 10/12 gapps.
Then Reboot!
And enjoy the goodness!
I love CM10 or AOKP much better than TW, just my opinion.

QnA bud. Good to see you're starting to flash tho.

I've tried many, many ROMs on my S3 but I keep going back to CM10. Even though it's not a stable release for my model it's still awesome

Couldn't I just use ROM Manager since CM10 in on there and wipe data and cache?
Isn't the CWM ROM Manager backup a Nandroid?
How could I keep my apps and most my data...etc?

Use Titanium to backup all your apps & data, boot to CWM recovery take a backup and install CM10 then restore your apps from Titanium, should be that easy!

Yeah, perhaps you guys don't use it, but my question remains. I've backed up using ROM Manager and transferred that image to my PC for an external copy. Couldn't I just install CM10 using ROM Manger as it is supported? Isn't that backup a NANdroid?
Or is it just not preferable?

rom manager simply boots into recovery for you and makes the backup itself, etc. however, if you want to do more (wipe /system, etc) you need to go into recovery manually and do it.

i'm confused by your wording, sorry. rom manager would be suitable to your needs. it can install a rom for you, but it will only wipe data/factory reset. it will not wipe /system or dalvik cache like so many installation instructions say to do. rom manager can backup your rom and restore your backup.
so yes, you can use it if you choose to, but learning to use cwm would probably be easier in the long run than needing to rely on an app.

they are either on the internal sd card or one that you inserted into your phone. you won't lose any data on those.

Tools

Need some help moving forward with rom installation. Have been reading and playingback guides and articles in the last few days on rooting and roms. Just rooted AT&T S3 I747 ver. 4.1.2 and have access to SU. Installed Revovery Tools from DsLNeXuS and Titanium Backup Pro. Made a backup with Recovery Tools and stopped.
I'm going back and forth between guides noticing some of them were written over a year ago. Have been using these guides below.

Recovery backups are for if something happens to your phone you can restore phone its original sate by choosing backup from recovery.
With Titanium Backup you can backup your applications and data. Tomorrow if you install a new ROM you can just restore applications along with data from Titanium Backup.
When you flash anew ROM you will loose all your current apps and Titanium Backup is used to restore them.

You use titanium backup for backing up apps and the associated data (logins, settings, game progress, etc). For installing custom ROM you need a custom recovery such as CWM or TWRP. Samsung stock firmware uses ODIN vice RUU.

So I'm hearing "restoring data from one rom to another can cause problems". This will be my first rom install. I've already backed up all apps and data. Do I have to pick and choose which apps I want to restore after flashing a new rom?

It could cause problems. If it occurs, it is usually when switching from a Touchwiz ROM to an AOSP ROM and vice versa. If you are going from stock TW to a custom ROM based off stock (or AOSP to AOSP), you will likely have few to no issues. App compatibility with a new android version is another matter (I.e. ICS to JB 4.2). It could happen over changes in android versions but it is not likely and even less so over minor variations (4.2 to 4.3 for example).

Restoring "System" data from another ROM will usually give you problems.
Also, it might be a good idea to copy your EFS folder from the root of your phone, using a file explorer program, to your SD card or computer before you start flashing ROMs, as most people who later had data connection problems (lost their IMEI numbers) never got around to doing it.

Are "custom ROM based off stock" and "Samsung based ROM" the same thing?
I am currently running AT&T Android Version 4.1.2, Baseband I747UCDMG2. Can you recommend a couple of known stable Samsung based ROMs?
On backing up apps and data. When preparing for the very fist ROM flash, does it make sense to not backup all the bloatware apps AT&T has in 4,1,2.?

1. Root explorer is good. But it's a paid app.
2.Yes
3. S3Rx, Dandroid, Intergalactic, and Graviton are some excellent touchwiz ROMs.
4. Do not restore system apps!!

Do Recovery Tools ans ROM Manager do the pretty much the same thing? I see a lot of info for ROM manager. Will I be able to do everything by keeping only one(ROM Manager?)?
Is it better to always flash from external SD card instead of internal?
