Hello XDA community,
I am soon to be a Galaxy Note 2 owner & this will be my first Android device, I currently own an iPhone (Yeah I know that is like saying Voldemort on this forum) and I'm just wondering once I obtain the device what should I do with it (apart from the obvious) well then again the obvious thing to most would be to root it but I am new to this OS & pretty much an Novice.
Any advise would be much appreciated & I look forward to being an active member of this forum.
What do you consider 'obvious'?
First thing to do is set the settings-> s-pen to 'left handed' if necessary.
I can tell you that the first things I'm going to do are:
1) Root
2) restore my old apps
3) use haxsync to sync my facebook pictures into my contact list
4) Test and probably reinstall the 'system'(ish) apps that usually don't work when restored via titanium backup.
Like call confirm (pop up notification before dialing someone)
5) Make backups of my phone as a sanity point restore (titanium backup, and cwm backup)
6) enter in my wifi information (hidden SSID)
7) download an offload map of my local area where I normally drive.
8) install flash: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1774336
Then just use your phone. With android the most important thing to remember is you can customize it like crazy.
So if you ever think, 'wouldn't it be nice if I had an easier way to do _____, or faster access to _____, or a different _______', then you probably can.
You can change anything - the keyboard, launcher, dialer, whatever.
You can get widgets to give you instant access to various information, or quicker access to whatever settings/controls/apps you most often use.
- Frank
Turn it on obviously.
The first thing I'm doing to my baby is putting a screen protector on.

Ugh, someone said iPhone AND Voldemort in the same post...
I would suggest that you take the time to give yourself a tour of all of the different settings, the ways to customize the background with widgets of all sorts and see if you can find some apps that are similar to the ones you have on your...you know... that other device you own. Enjoy!
I suggest you use the phone until you get comfortable with all the features.. Knowing how to work everything.. Knowing where all the settings are.. And then save rooting for last.. I did that & it made my life a lot easier instead of just jumping into rooting your first (expensive) android device
But to each its own
Good luck

I 2nd the screen protector comment! The case. Then I will put it on and tinker. All in about 2 hours, when Abdul the delivery driver arrives with it!
Drop it like its hot

Ty for the advise & yeah the Android OS is completely new to me so I will hope that over time I can take in everything & learn how to adapt & get the best experience possible.
With the rooting process is that something that be done as soon as possible or you can just do it when ever?

Tasker. The app that automates your phone. Takes a while to learn and more expensive than most apps but you can do so much with it.
Sketchit very good game for our stylus.

Here's the list of apps that I've become quite fond of (besides the usual - Facebook, Twitter, etc.):
Shazam - Need to know what a song is quick? Shazam will find out for you.
TuneIn Radio Pro - Music junkie? Enjoy streaming radio? This app is great to have.
Dropbox - Useful for transferring files between your phone, computer, or other devices wirelessly.
Google Drive - Documents/Storage on the Go
Pixlr Express - Photo editing (filters, effects, adjustments, you name it).
SketchBook Mobile - advanced drawing capabilities on your phone - layers, different brushes/sizes/full color palette, really fun to use.
Osmos HD - Absorb the lifeforms around you and avoid being absorbed. Great time waster.
Ski Safari - Beat the avalanche, collect coins, pull off stunts and earn achievements. Another great time waster.
(Note: A few of these apps aren't free. For SketchBook, there's an express version, and there's a demo of Osmos HD.)
Here are some cool ones:
TeamViewer - Awesome for remoting into your desktop. Only thing is, you have to install the app on your desktop, too.
aCar - Want to keep track of your gas mileage and other services? I have not seen a better app on Android for that purpose.
Waze - Ok, may not always provide the best route, but it does a good job of getting you from A to B and letting you know of things that might be along your way...like cops, traffic, etc.
Tip Me (Tip Calculator) - Self explanatory.
Productivity?
Evernote - I guess you wouldn't need this as much if you're using S-note, but it's a great note taking app that syncs across all platforms.
Kingsoft Office - Some of the paid office apps are better IMO, but this one is free.
Adobe Reader - If you want to read PDF's, this is the app to use. The interface is simply the best for reading PDFs. Came in handy many times when needing to look at a service manual while working on my bikes.
Shooting Game?
Critical Strike Portable - Were you a Counter-Strike fan? Well, this game really is Counter-Strike ported to Android.
Time Killing Games?
Angry Birds - this is a given...
World of Goo - not free, but a very interesting game. Not only is it a time killer, but it's also a puzzle game.
Well, these are the ones I can think of at the moment...

I'm 51 and brand new to Android coming from an old iPhone 3gs. I use both a MacBook as well as PC running W8. I got a lot of Google Play gift cards from Santa so I've been having quite a bit of fun.
At the prompting of a 16yr old friend I rooted my phone with CleanROM SE 1.0 which is running like a champ.
Stuff I use all the time.
Nova Prime - already purchased before installing CleanROM
Zedge - yeah nuff said
Airdroid - wifi connection to my macbook and the only solid way I've been able to get the phone and osx to communicate.
ASTRO File
TuneSync
Titanium Backup
Juice Defender
QR Droid
Pocket
BeyondPod
MailDroid - best replacement I've found for apple mail.
HD Widgets
Fun stuff
Angry Birds
Paper Camera
HD Panorama
Pixlr Express
For a twitter client, I really like Slices for Twitter. It lets you group people you follow into slices so you can view only tweets from a particular group of people. Makes managing lots of twitter follows much easier!

What is the best/easiest way for me to get an app on my Note 2 which is only available for Android tablets (not phones)? I'd imagine I will have to root but I want to make sure that this would be possible before I start.
Thanks.
Root and run a rom you can drop your dpi to 160 with such as PAC, RootBox, PA, Carbon, Etc or use market spoofer. You'll probably need to edit your build.prop to reflect a tablet device name and model#
Alternatively if you have a tablet yourself you can download the app to it and extract the apk from /data/app and side load it to your note

Unfortunately, this doesn't always work. The sideload part does. I've tried to run tablet versions of apps, and they just didn't load. One example would be NHL Center Ice. Since I use it on both an Android phone and tablet, it had access to both. When I tried to run the tablet version, it wouldn't load.
Some apps have nice tablet versions that the phone, so I understand. I think they may be a mod to let you be able to do it, but I don't remember. If you're looking to run the both tablet and phone apps, it may be easier to use a hybrid ROM such as ParanoidAndroid or Cyogenmod.
Or xposed mod

Stock based TW rom's use SPH-D710 in build.prop. But this gives less app's (that work just fine) in the Play Store. For example. Real Racing 3 is missing when using SPH-D710. Other custom rom's use d710 (many AOSP based roms). Which in return gives more available app's. Such as, Real Racing 3 is available.
Which is truly correct? I always have to go in and change the build.prop to get some of the app's that are missing. If "d710" works and gives more app's, why are not all of the ROMS using this as default?
Is this just something many of the developer's do not know about?
SPH-D710 is the official model number, d710 is used in AOSP builds simply because most devs name their working folders d710 instead of SPH-D710. SPH-D710 would be the correct build number, the reason d710 shows more apps is because the Playstore no longer sees the device as a compatible or incompatible device, it registers as an unknown or generic android device on their server so it doesn't know if it's a phone or a tablet or what the proper configuration is. The problem with that is some of the apps won't work even though they can be downloaded, mostly tablet apps with no phone UI included, which can be fixed using Per App DPI in AOSP roms or using Xposed in TW.

I think I will leave it set as d710. I like the choice of atleast seeing personally if a app/game will work, then having no choice at all. I know Real Racing 3, Most Wanted, and I am sure many other's work just fine. These app's are not available to me (unless I side load, which is not convenient) with it set as SPH-D710.

Just check in description for tablet only, if your rom doesn't have xposed or PAD in it. Some games say they aren't compatible not because they won't play but because the device will lag and it's simply because of the specs and the dev doesn't want to be inundated with "this game sucks" and bad ratings due to the device specs alone. The Playstore will show all apps on d710 just because it doesn't see it as an actual model number but a generic build so it assumes the user knows what the device is tab/phone and what it's capable of running spec wise. Oh and stay away from the Heros Memory Game on there that thing has some super shady permissions it can intercept and send and receive texts and calls and redirect outbound calls and texts to other numbers without you knowing, basically it can tap your phone and has no legitimate use for the permissions cuz its just a memory game like the old kids game where you match 2 images from a group of cards
