Hardware keys are on, but dead - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-T989

Since the last couple of days, all 4 of my hardware keys are always on, but have stopped functioning. I have tried factory resets and even tried a few different Roms. No luck so far. I am using the workaround of turning on the navigation keys that adds an extra layer of keys at the bottom taking up space.
I was wondering if anyone had experienced this before and can give me suggestions.

Unfortunately I too have nothing to offer that helps.
I'm still baffled and have exhausted my all efforts (and google). P.s. I get no lights at all, however they do lit up dim in some circumstances

It is more of an inconvenience than anything at this point. I haven't tried anything from the hardware side since it can be controlled by the software setting which I have toggled numerous times.
I love this phone and it works great except for this recent problem.
There are a lot of smart folks on this forum, I hope that someone knows how to fix it.

For the time being I have soft key enabler, which has basically saved the phone

The AOKP ROM already has this feature in-built and have the flexibility to rearrange and choose actions for each of the keys. I have created 4 keys that match the hardware keys so that I don't have to learn the new default keys order.
The only caveat being that this new set of software keys take up some of the screen space.

Does bln or app called screen filter work when u disable and enable the hard buttons?
Either of you have warranty? I would flash to latest stock unroot and bring it to Tmob....
If its hardware theyll should be able to tell....
Sounds like a short in a wire or that your bottom screen is defective since its not responding...

Capacitive buttons help

So here's my scenario, I let a friend of mine borrow my phone for a couple of hours for work and ever since he returned it my 4 capacitive buttons have been acting up, my menu button presses itself it seems and I cannot hold down the home button to review my recent apps or access the task manager because my phone reboots itself . I do not know what he did or if he messed around with it but according to him he didn't do anything. Is there anyway anyone can help me remap the buttons to stock? Any help is appreciated, Thank You!

Maybe liquid damage?

I'd try an odin to factory reset and see if it's software related. If its still acting up after a reset then it'll be a hardware problem.

I think its software related because my search button vibrates once on press and then it vibrates again on release, do any of you guys know how to remap the buttons?

If you're not rooted, have you tried doing a reset?
phone settings > privacy > factory data reset
will wipe your data but agree with the earlier posters... if doing a factory reset doesn't fix it, it's probably a hardware issue (perhaps water damage).
Are you running maddogins lockscreen mod?

I've done a hard reset a couple of times and the problem is still there. I'm starting to think it is hardware related, the weird thing is that I've had the phone since it was released and it never gave me these problems until recently..

Haha flees.... I've tried setting gov to performance then power down, nothing. I setup Tasker to post a notification when keyboard opens and it does post so the system knows the keyboard is open. I also tried using Tasker to set display on time out to 99 min.... Etc.. Still stays off. Heck just opening it shuts off screen. When screen is off opening it flicks on screen.....

Hardware and software buttons?

Sorry if this has been mentioned but is it possible for me to completely disable my hardware buttons and enable software buttons?
Sent from my SGH-T889 using xda premium
I know you can enable software buttons with a line in build.prop....always forget it though. To disable the hardware buttons I am not so sure. I would guess maybe a kernel woukd need to be made with the hardware buttons disabled.

I'm still hoping that someone figures out a way so that when s pen is removed the nav buttons show up so that you can actually use nav buttons with the spen since Samsung made a complete fail by not having a way for the Spen to use the captive buttons. I don't want to have the nav buttons on the screen all the time, just when the spen is removed.
thanks alot i see that adding the softkeys mess up the camera but i dont use the camera much i just hope it doesnt mess with other apps and disabling hardware keys screw up the power button. im going to experiment on my days off
So that works forme however on main screen the apps on the bottom a d widgets are cut off by the very bottom apps... anyone else experience this

Any way to "remap" the power button?

Okay, so here's my problem and it seems to not be an uncommon one. (search showed others experiencing this and all the responses would say is that they brought it to Sprint and what not..)
The power button seems to like "lock" or "jam" when I hit it, so that either a) the power menu comes up or b) the phone completely restarts or shuts down.
I was thinking maybe there might be a way to remap the power button to like, a volume rocker switch and completely disable the power button. Any help? I can't exchange this phone or anything for 6 months (no TEP, contract) and honestly, I love this phone to death. Any help would be appreciated for my poor phone!
That would require a very complex hardware modification. So... No. By any regular standard, it can't be done. You can look up mobiletechvideos on google. They do power button replacements.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I337 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
Can't this be one in keypad.kl or the equivalent file on this phone?
Remapping a button power button to the volume keys is not as simple as changing a few likes of code.
There is hardware in play. The volume keys are not connected the same as the power button. Both have different conditions. The power button will have different resistors and voltage regulators than the volume keys. Logic states that altering how the software uses these buttons could cause even more damage. Like sending power from the power button to a volume key could be detrimental because it may not have the same resistance leading to or from it like the power button.
Also, take into account that all three buttons do an entirely different task. They would logically not even be traced to the same spot on the motherboard.
At best, keypad.kl would be able to disable the buttons.

I had a similar problem with my Sprint S2. Replacing the failing power button fixed it. Are you good with a soldering iron?
Several ebay sellers offer the SPH-D710 Epic Touch power switch.
Or, you can ship it in for about $40 (including return shipping):

How hard is the soldering of this switch really? Has anyone tried it themselves?

Its not for beginners. But if you have some experience, patience and the correct tools, it isn't really hard. This kind of soldering requires a steady hand.

Are there sufficient instructions supplied with these replacements?
For now, I've been using an app called Gravity Screen which keeps me from needing to use the power button. I think I read about it here. It won't help with screen shots though, but there may be a solution for that as well.

There are a ton of screenshot apps out there that don't require use of the power button. I know it's not a solution but it's a work-around.

Screen died

I got my SM-P601 about 2 weeks ago, and it has been working perfectly since then, until last night. I left my note 10.1 with my father and left, when I got back, it was acting really weird. When I press the power button, you hear that sound that it woke up, but the screen doesn't power up until about 2 seconds later, it performs normally afterwards. Tried rebooting, no luck. It still gets weirder, so I leave it for an hour or so, when I try later, the screen no longer powers up (I don't know it's that or it has failed, crashed or something) but it is obviously powered up because when I press the power button, you hear that usual sound, and the same thing when you unlock it, I navigated through pages and even opened up some games, it's all working, except there's no screen, just plain black. The bigger problem is, I rooted it, so no warranty for me.

If you can get to recovery power+volume up , then wipe data & reboot .
I tend to agree, factory reset is worth trying.
Alright I'm gonna try that, but I'm gonna need help navigating through the menu. After I power it off, I press the volume up and power and release the power button after about 5 seconds right? (I can't tell when the samsung logo shows up). The thing I wanna make sure of, the factory reset option, is it the third or fourth option? I am not sure if it is the same as my GS4. The confirmation afterwards is the eighth option. Can someone confirm that?

It`s the fourth line " wipe data/factory reset.
Okay I think I successfully factory reset it. However, nothing's changed. The weird thing is, the touch screen is working, it is functioning properly and I can select apps etc... but I just can't see anything.

Just because your Knox flag has been tripped, does not automatically mean your warranty has been completely voided. Samsung is going to have to prove that your rooting the tablet is what caused the screen failure.
Were you running a custom ROM or kernel? If not, then there is no way I can think of that simply rooting the tablet caused the screen failure.
Now that's not to say your warranty isn't voided for another reason such as the tablet was dropped et al.
Just thinking outside the box... Did you happen to have Screen Filter or a like application installed at the time your screen went black? If so, someone may have adjusted the brightness setting to zero and that could be causing the problem.
Good luck.
I hope that's the case, can they even tell it is rooted without the screen being on?
To answer your questions, I haven't installed a custom ROM neither a screen filter app, I tried adjusting the brightness multiple times so one of the tries must have actually hit the correct place, still no effect though.
If nothing works, I think my only option is to take it back to samsung.

ya you should try samsung .at this point it wont hurt .just tell them screen went out and go from there. don't mention root .unless they ask.they will be able to tell anyway.this should be covered under warranty.good luck. let us know how it goes.
I had the exact same issue with this tablet.
The problem is that the backlight is dead.
If you look closely at the screen under the light, you'll be able to see some icons and letters.
In my case, Samsung did not cover the warranty because my device was not purchased in Canada and it was rooted.
I mean Canada didn't even have the device at the time.
Long story short, I did something bad to get my tablet "repaired".
But I blame Samsung for having such a crappy warranty service.
Yeah I think I'll just take it to them. I'll let you know what happens.

Just a wild guess but I suppose you could go buy a new one from a retailer here in Canada, swap out the faulty one for the new one and return it claiming it's faulty (I doubt any of them check the SN on the back and the one on the box match), or I guess you could even swap the SN on the box from the SN on the US box so it does match.
Not saying he did that, but it's the easiest way to get it "repaired"
Come to think of it you can do this for any tablet, even though this is downright fraud. So please don't.
