[Q] What makes android 4.0.4 vary from 4.0.3 and how to manually update a rom - Xperia Play Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I was just wondering if it was possible to Manually update a android 4.0.3 ROM to 4.0.4? Like if we knew the files that defines and classifies a 4.0.4 rom. I am not sure if these two android roms are built on different bases or code but all 4.0.3 apps work on 4.0.4 and vice versa. Seeing how 4.0.4 just seems to be a patch of 4.0.3 with minor fixes and improvements it doesn't seem so far fetched.

[Q] 4.0.3 on SGN

Hi community!
I got my GSM SGN last friday and i've been having one hell of a time playing with my new device. Of course, rooted, cwm, and some mods/themes/etc. I can't help to notice that some of the threads have screenshots of SGN with 4.0.3, but my device still runs on 4.0.2 . Am I doing something wrong or has the update not come to me specifically, yet, because i'm so special
4.0.3 hasn't been officially pushed to the SGN by Google/Samsung/carriers, but Google has finished and released 4.0.3 and published it to the AOSP (Android Open Source Project). Devs have made their own 4.0.3 releases using that

I had a brain fart. I realized I flashed a ROM that is 4.0.2 so DUH it's going to say 4.0.2 on the phone. Lulz, thank's for your help

Where can I get the 4.03 update for cdma GNEX?

I need this update as 4.04 wasnt working how I think it should have.

There was 4.0.3 update, and the 4.0.4 update was just a leak (only official for GSM model). The only way to get 4.0.3 is from a custom ROM that was built from 4.0.3 source.
There was never a 4.0.4 leak for CDMA. Only the radio dropped.
4.0.4 is only OFFICIALLY on GSM...but the source dropping means we can rip literally everything from it but the radios on our CDMA version.
Here are two 4.0.4 stock rooted roms.

I can't seem to find any 4.0.3...
But what seems to be the problem that you're having with 4.0.4 that you didn't on 4.0.3?
My issue is volume+ doesnt work.
Just tested.
Works fine with Lean Kernel 3.2.1 stable...as long as the volume increase supposed to be pretty minimal. Never bothered with it before.
Try that?

if the 4.0.4 cdma roms are just official 4.0.4 gsm roms with radios ripped out, what is the difference between those two 4.0.4 roms you linked? also, what radios will I have if i flash one of those two roms in your post? i just got my gnex so i'm on stock 4.0.2 right now. i'm having some issues with my reception dropping and reconnecting after 5-10 seconds quite frequently and i'm not entirely sure what i should be trying to change to remedy the problem.
thanks for the insightful post

I'm not sure of the exact differences besides post date and developer.
Potentially none: Haven't scanned the threads.
These won't change your radios...
Here is a link:
http://rootzwiki.com/topic/12864-radiosgalaxy-nexus-all-available-radiosbasebands/
These can be flashed in CWM.
I personally use the 4.0.4's.

You're mistaken. There was indeed a 4.0.4 CDMA leak back in February (Build IMM30B). I have been running said leak since it hit XDA. You had to be completely stock to flash it through stock recovery and it included new radios and a new bootloader.
The 4.0.4 CDMA radios running around were ripped from that same 4.0.4 CDMA leak.

Holy hell.
I had completely forgotten somehow about Axiom...and whatever else...was running off of this leak.
You're correct!
Sorry for the misinformation guys!

what differences are there between the 4.0.4 CDMA leak youre referring to and the two 4.0.4 roms posted above, if any? is the 4.0.4 CDMA leak youre referring to an update or full ROM like above?
Full rom.
Just not compiled from source.
4.0.4 from source was released much more recently...
And Google provided "hundreds" of bug-fixes with it.
I'd recommend the Google-source base.

quick newbie question i suppose is kinda off topic.. i guess i'd just like some clarification. do the roms themselves contain the radios in them? for instance, if I flashed a custom rom, would my phone's radios be automatically changed to whatever that custom rom dev decided to use in his rom?
additionally, individual radios are also available to swap out without altering roms, correct?

Correct.

Do I need to be running 4.0.x to run that 4.0.x radio? For example, if I try to run IMM30B, do I need to be on 4.0.4 ROM? also, what do people mean by make sure to check the MD5?
really appreciate all the help!!
No problem at all man.
And no.
Radios are interchangeable.
MD5 checks make sure you got a good download.
For example:
bd63961006aa65e88100017bab2c7fbb
http://synibox.info/synik4l/razorloves/4.0.4Radios.zip
If you download directly on your phone...quite a few applications can verify MD5's.
Root Explorer...Rom Toolbox...Pretty much any file manager.
Most you must long-press the file, and click "properties."
It should pop up a MD5: __________________________.
If it matches, it's safe to flash.
If not...delete it and re-download.
There are also quite a few free MD5 checkers available for your PC if you download on the PC and then transfer.

great will def check before flashing. lastly, my issue is this: i have strong signal where i live (i think its strong anyway, shows up as usually 3bar, never drops below, and a lot of times 4 full bars of 4G) but i notice it just drops all signal for about 5 seconds.. then my bars come back and a few seconds later my 4g bars come back after that.
what exactly is happening to my phone during this process? is this what people are referring to as hand off or is that simply changing between 4g to 3g, or 3g to 2g? is my issue something different, as in just dropping signal altogether?
finally, is there a specific radio you think i should try or could my problem possibly be a ROM problem? i'm on stock out of box 4.0.2 ROM and ICL53F

Jelly Bean kernel question

Like many of you others out there, the past few days, I've been flashing all different kinds of Jelly Beans on my GSM Galaxy Nexus. First, I installed bigxie's 4.1 (v1 and v2), then I installed bigxie's 4.1.1 (AOSP). It might be important to mention that my Gnex is originally a yakju and obviously all these versions of JB are for takju, so my phone has essentially been "converted." Later I reflashed the stock 4.1 from the I/O and then installed the official Google .zip file (from xda) that updates from the I/O 4.1 to 4.1.1. After doing this, I noticed this morning that my kernel version was different from others who had just installed 4.1.1 via OTA with the System Updates. So this afternoon I used the Galaxy Nexus Toolkit v7.4 to download and flash the Google factory ICS 4.0.4 image, which obviously deleted everything from the phone. Then I turned wifi on and went to System Update and it was already downloading the Jelly Bean official update, as pictured below:
View attachment 1194468
After installing the above update, I checked the phone's info section and I still had a different kernel version than everyone else, as see below:
View attachment 1194471
While I have kernel 3.0.31-ge8de0e2, it seems like other people have 3.0.31-g6fb96c9. As mentioned before, I had to resort to going back to stock, vanilla 4.0.4, then downloading/installing the update and I still don't have this newer kernel. What is different about this kernel and why is my phone unable to get it?
I have that build of the kernel (g6fb96cp), it really shouldn't matter which one you have.
Something strange just happened to my phone.
After doing some searching online, it seems that the 3.0.31-ge8de0e2 kernel is the same one that comes with the developer preview of JB 4.1 from the Google I/O phones. Just now, I downloaded an update for Google+, and when I restarted my phone, I was suddenly magically on the 3.0.31-g6fb96c9.
Is it even possible that a single app update could carry a kernel update as well?!?!?

Now that I couldn't answer, it's possible but unlikely. All an app has to do is replace boot.img, something that many other kernel apps are capable of (franco.kernel's app, ezekeel's app).

[Q] Clarification of Using Roms and version updates

I have a few questions about flashing ROMS on my E4GT.
I've read a little about the different ROMS and I'm not sure which one to choose. I think Codename ICS is the right one for me but I need help with that. What I'm looking for:
Faster and more stable
Customization such as battery percent instead of the battery
Working WiFi and 4G
"Bloatware" doesn't really matter to me...can any of the apps be installed if I decide I want them?
Will I need to flash a new ROM when there's a Jelly Bean update or will there be an upgrade option?
Number 1 can not be accurately be answered.
Number 2 is in Samsung's stock ICS as well as CyanogenMod9 and I would assume AOKP. Many custom gingerbread roms had it.
Number 3.... usually not an issue
Number 4 custom roms, aosp roms all usually very stripped. If your not on AOSP then most touchwiz stuff can be put back on a custom touchwiz rom. Some include a removed apps folder.
Flashing a rom, broad term. All updates are "rom flashes" minor updates will replace some files major updates can do a whole lot more including pushing new bootloaders.
Jelly Bean update? I laugh very hard and then return to the ways you will get jelly bean. Flash a ported rom of Jelly Bean, CM10 when it comes out, AOKP when it goes Jelly Bean. Maybe someone will waste the time to port a GS3 jelly bean rom?
From what I can tell, there are no "official" CyanogenMod ROMs that work well on the E4GT. CM7 has issues with 4G. I can't remember where I read that. I believe it was a fairly recent post.
To clarify my question about upgrading, are there ways of simply upgrading from GB to ICS the way we do with the OTAs from the carriers? Could one just upgrade from CM7 to CM9 to CM10 without flashing it fresh?

[Q] ICS rom's for captivate glide?

hi...are there any OTHER ics roms for captivate glide then the official rooted one? i mean for the GB their were at least 3 variations, and one of them didn't include any AT&T crap on it. just plain vanilla clean install. (i suspect i maybe have some bluetooth connectivity problems, my build number is IMM76D, android version 4.0.4 kerenl 3.1.10
