Today while texting in public with my N4, an idiot thief thought it was a good to snatch the phone out my hand and take off running, lucky me being me, I chased him down and got my phone back. (wont go into detail)
To get to the point, when I got my phone back it was still unlocked, leaving the thief to have full control of my phone, I already have the lock-screen activation set to the lowest value (15 seconds), yet for the minute or so where he had my phone, it didn't lock. Presumably because his hand made contact with the screen while running, thus leaving the screen on.
Okay so, the idea is: have a app that uses the accelerometer to detect sudden increases in speed, or certain motions, idea being when the phone is snatched out your hand, the app detects the sudden increase in speed (from the thief running away) or the motion of the phone being snatched out your hand, after which the app would lock the screen.
Sure, its not faultless, though it would be effective. Plus if a dev does pick this up, any faults would be ironed out.. but for now I'm just wondering if its possible at all.
I think it is not a great idea, it is very hard to decide when the movement is strong enough to lock.. and I bet i'd lock very often when you don't want.. Also, those kind of things don't happen very often.. It'd be a useless app for most of the ppl using it, as their phone will never be stolen of their hands..
Meh, just an idea.

I thought there was an app once that would do something to your device if it detected it was being dropped. Like save opens programs shut down the device or or something. Although now I know that no app could be that fast, unless you dropped it off a building lol. But that would be kinda neat too.

AW: Anti-Theft app idea...
I think you could do it by building a Tasker profile that locks the screen when the accelerometer reaches a specific value.
Alternative idea: Make a Tasker profile that when a special SMS is received it locks your screen, sets a password and under the hood sends you the actual GPS coordinates of your phone.
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app
Use Cerberus, flashable in recovery so it'll survive a factory reset. And like the person above said, create a profile in tasker with sensor - gesture. This will do the trick for sure

In contrary of you guys, I never lock my phone just because 99% of people who will steal my phone will just remove my sim card, delete what is not interesting for them and start using it. and as i have cerberus(anti theft app) installed ,I have lot of chance to get my phone back without a hassle.
If i had lock t , for sure they will give to a technician who will flash again the firmware and i will never gat my phone back.

What about some form of "reverse SIM card lock"? I actually thought the functionality I'm about to describe is what "SIM Card Lock" meant in many of the security applications available but apparently it's not: what about an application on the phone that securely wipes the phone when it is using any SIM card, or none at all, other than the one it's "assigned" to? Where "SIM Card Lock" locks a SIM Card to the phone; how about locking the phone to the SIM card?
Hey OP
The idea is cool in it self, but unfortunately its not as practical and that doesn't help you much. Imagine you had your idea implemented, and the thief just run away with your phone. What will that serve you? You were lucky to recover it by catching him, but what if you couldn't? This is where you need an app that can get your phone back instead of worrying about it the minute detail of having your screen locked by an action that is indistinguishable from other non-thefts situations from a software/hardware perspective...
There is an app I really recommend everyone to have and its called AndroidLost (many other app similar to it are available). What you can do with it is basically infinite, when you have your phone stollen or lost. From tracking it, locking it, disabling it etc...even if the sim card is changed. You can even take a picture of the thief and have sent to you without them realizing it...
It gave me such a peace of mind and hope it will for you too! Try it, its in the play store.
Cheers

Hey, just to clarify.. I do actually use a anti-theft app. (Avest) Its actually really good, you can flash it through recovery thus making it a system service and making it resilient from a wipe. The original idea came about as with my phone I have a unique feature: when the phone is locked, it cant be rebooted, or turned off from the power menu, though it can be soft reset via holding down the power button for 10 seconds, however the phone does boot back up and nothing is effected but when its unlocked it can be turned off, rendering any anti-theft app useless.
Sure its not practical in some situations, like driving.. but there's always a solution to a problem, right?
:good:

I have mine set up to max the volume and start screaming, light up the led, take photos front/back and email them, and report gps all from different codes in Tasker. There are other apps you could use to do it with, but I already have Tasker as a running process and dont need to duplicate that. Go nuts.

I've had the Nexus for about 2 weeks now and been impressed with it overall.
Which comes to the biggest mistake I've made now. I left the phone on the table and my sis's kids were in the house. Before you get any ideas they did not drop it. However, when I caught my nephew with the phone it was rebooting. I was wondering how he managed to do that considering I had screen lock enabled with a PIN.
In any case, when restart completed everything was blank. Somehow he managed to do a factory reset. All my programs were gone. All local data wiped out.
Good thing most of my apps were back in a few minutes but lost quite a bit of other stuff.
Lesson: Never leave phone unattended.

That would only make sense in this context if the phone was somehow attached with a lock, and after repeated failed attempts to pick the lock the phone would catapult itself out the window.
So. I was in a hookah bar in Texas. I'm almost sure I put my GNEX in my pocket right before I left! Must have slipped while I thought I was sliding it in my jacket's pocket!
This is not a thread to complain or for you to feel sorry for me. My previous phone was a Motorola Atrix 4G, which can be GPS-tracked and remotely-wiped through the MotoBlur website. I must have been too excited with the GNEX that I did not find the time to check if I had the same options in case of emergencies. It seems Google Nexus phones does not have a similar feature by default. I went back home and tried tracking the NEX but no go. I did not have any apps for this functionality pre-installed. **pulls hair**. There's an app called "Plan B" which can be installed remotely using your account in the Android market website to enable GPS locating. Sadly, It did not work for me. Maybe it's not updated to support ICS yet.
Anyway, I'm just saying make sure to install a reliable GPS tracking app and test it in case you misplace your GNEX phones. (maybe even recommend us one?)
I used my brother's iPhone 4S later that night and I almost laughed despite how sad I was for my loss. The iphone feels like a little toy after getting used to the GNEX. I felt the same when I went back to my Atrix too, which has an even larger screen than the iphone 4s. I concluded, there's no going back.. I ordered another GNEX today!
Good luck.

Yes, I did change my Google account password right after I failed to track the device. I needed the password to be unchanged until I (quickly) try to locate the device using the Plan B app.
A reminder to people who lose their phones..
If you somehow fail to locate your lost device and feel or knew it might be in someone else's hands:
-Change your Gmail/Google password.
-Login to Google Checkout and remove all credit cards added to your account.
-Inform your phone provider/carrier to disable your SIM. Excessive usage of data can show up on your bill if you have limited plans.
Also, If you have Google Maps Latitude service enabled, It's possible with some luck to locate the phone accurately by logging in to the Google Latitude website and look for yourself.

This is the first and only 'find my phone' app that you download AFTER you've already lost your phone. Having Lookout on your phone is the best way to protect your phone and find it fast, but use Plan B if you have already lost your phone and didn't have Lookout installed.

I don't know about Android Lost, haven't tried it but I believe Phone Locator Pro has to be the best thing out there. It has every option imaginable including the ability to continuosly send what ever message you want to your phone for the thief to read, but he still can't unlock it. Also takes a silent snap shot from the front camera of your device on any failed unlock attempts and sends it immediately to your email.

Sorry you lost your phone, that really sucks
I should probably heed your advice and install one of these GPS programs but I have concerns.
1. Surely they drain your battery quite a lot?
2. Wouldn't you have to leave GPS on all the time?
3. I'm not sure I'd trust some random company with all my data..
4. Would it actually help you find it? I mean if you lose your phone someone's going to take it aren't they?
Thoughts?

I'll answer first cerberus.
1. Battery isn't affected at all, it will track your phone when you'll log in on a pc. So it's not tracking 100% of the time.
2. You can turn it off, when you'll go on the website you can turn it on. So you can loose your phone, turn it on and find it back. So even if the thief turn gps and data off, you can reenable them from the website.
3. I trust them
4. Yeah it will help, you'll see his position on Google map and every time he try to unlock it,. It. Take a picture with front camera. It will be easy to recognize the thief.
The app doesn't appear on the phone and it can't be installed and deleted without your cerberus username and password.

1. Not necessarily, but they need to run in the background, yeah.
2. The app would be given permission to turn on GPS if it's off.
3. There are some apps which need a lot of permission to work properly (like Light Flow), that's why users should look for apps by recognized developers if they decide to install apps like that, not just random one from the market.
4. Yes it can. I once lost my Atrix phone and found it in my friend's car under the seat after GPS-tracking it in the Motorola website. So, It's not ONLY for cases of theft although it can help with that.
If I had a GPS tracking app in my lost GNEX, I'd be able to tell it was still in the hookah bar where I believe I lost it and confront them there about it, but I had no proof. I'd rather lose the money than accuse the employees there without an evidence.

I stepped out to grab lunch and I suspect the guy at the deli took my phone when I put it down to get my wallet out. Of course he turned the device off, so I can't call it. I checked Google latitude and it shows my last location as IN FRONT OF the deli, but since the guy shut the phone off its been idle for two hours. Unfortunately I dont have a password on the device so my concern is he will get in there and mess around with my emails and so forth. Is there anyway for me to remotely setup a password/pincode on the device so that when he does turn it on its locked? Assuming its locked I should be able to track it using Google Latitude or perhaps install one of those other apps. Any help would be greatly appreciated...
disassociate it from google and change your password so he cannot access that. otherwise there is little you can do at this point. also contact your carrier to get it kicked off the network as well.

Those links are great, but they appear to be for Google Apps users. Is there something similar for "regular" Google users who don't have Google Apps?
If I change my Google password what happens when the thief turns my phone back on? Will he still be able to see the old messages in my Gmail inbox, as well as all my contacts? Also, if I change the password now what happens to a pending installation from a service such as Android Lost? Will it still be able to install or will it fail since it cant authenticate to the device? Lastly, if I wait for Android Lost to authenticate and then change my Google password will it still work?
Dude. I stead of messing with apps go back to the frikin deli and see if they found your phone. Tell them you have a tracking device and it says its last location was the deli and where you last left it. Why assume the deli cashier room it. Some Joe behind you could have taken it also and turned it off and ran off . That's what I would do instead of installing apps.

Personally, I would get some animal tranquilizers and wait for the deli worker to be alone. Knock him out and bring him back to the deli after hours. Then put plastic tarps over everything and duct tape him down to the prep board. Using a scalpel, cut his cheek and save a drop of blood for your trophy. Put pictures of your GNex around the room and talk to him about his crime before plunging a huge ass knife into his chest. When done, cut up his body and place the parts into 2-3 garbage bags. Finally, take a boat out on the water and dump the bags.
That should take care of the problem...until the next phone is stolen...

Finally, take a boat out on the water and dump the bags.
That should take care of the problem...until the next phone is stolen...

LMFAO
get GEE`D
lookout security can remotely wipe your phone, but you need it to installed on the phone first.
Does the Deli itself have any security cameras?
I wasn't being overly serious

Yes unfortunately my note 2 got stolen at a party and even if I had some kind of tracking app installed it would be useless because they pulled the battery as soon as they took it.
This gave me an idea that some smart developer might take advantage of.
I propose we cook something into the rom's (like carrier IQ) that has the ability to track the location of that phone. Not tied to the mobile number or the sim card but to the phone itself. This way if somebody puts in a different sim the phone can still be tracked and controlled remotely. Also if they do a wipe of the phone, this will still be in there unless they switch roms.
Now this would be a service that is always available but is pay per use.
So if you never have to use it you never have to pay for it, but if your phone gets stolen you pay like $3-$5 to get the location of your phone emailed to you.
Just a thought.
I lost all hope on my phone coming back but I would really like not to experience this again in the future and I don't want anybody else to have to go through this either.
They already have this
Avast security with root features does just about everything

Cerberus does this too. Doesn't need root, and it even survives factory resets. Alerts you if somebody puts in an unauthorized sim.
Whether or not it would survive a custom rom flash, I don't know (probably wouldn't if the rom wipes /system maybe - I don't know where Cerberus stores itself).
BTW, that sucks that somebody stole your N2. =\
Iirc there's also the Plan B app that's meant to be installed from Google Play in those situations.

Bet you just left it lying around at a party....
Call up T-Mobile and have them blacklist the IMEI that way they end up with an expensive paperweight.

Yeah did that, also filed a police report. Also tried the plan b apps but those are mainly for lost phones and not stolen ones where the battery and sim is pulled right away.
I also looked into the cerberus app and I am very impressed, I wish I had this earlier

That sucks dude. Did you get insurance?
That sucks man. One of the main reasons why I switched to tmo from sprint. Since I have cheaper phones laying around, I just switch them out before I go anywhere I.e a bar etc. That way if I lose (or stolen) anything, itll be something I can live with.
I know with sprint I can swap the esns online but it doesnt work half the time and have to call care to fix it. Sim cards are ingenious.
I recommend everyone have some throw away phones for reasons like this. Or insurance.

Not sure about this one. So you just use your awesome phone when you are at home or at work? I would be lost if I left home without my note 2

Frankly speaking I have already lost 2 mobile phones..
It feels very odd, n weird...
The most horrifying thoughts are that people might go through all the data, video, pics that u tried so hard to keep a secret...
Seriously v need a better technology here...
Almost every mobile has gps, n now they also have Russian + American GPS installed in our latest mobiles, that really makes me think, every mobile can b theoretically tacked down, no matter watt.. but still v are at mercy of cops n operators...
Developers really need to focus on this idea n boost a total new era...
P.S
I too use tracking apps, but still they are limited.. u can find it if it was lost.. but how do u manage to located it in real time, when u living in high density of population?

I use aeGis(hoping I could send out the SMS in time to activate it) and on my lock screen I put a little message that says "This phone is equipped with Lojack. It is being tracked via GPS" just hoping that it deters theft.

Not to sound rude, but seriously how do you know that they pulled the battery and sim immediately? Did you find the battery door sitting on the ground or something? It's not exactly intuitive to pull the battery door on the Note 2.
IMHO I can't help but think that lookout and/or prey could have helped you, or at the very least a lock screen and encrypted FS to protect your data. Still I'm sorry that this happened to you. I know lookout will send a shout out when the battery gets low with its last know location. That along with a lock screen would give you a pretty decent chance of recovering the device. Maybe something to consider for the future.
A Lesson Learned
They have to put the battery in eventually. I use Lookout, and you can wipe all your data from the click of your computer. It also has a lot of locating features. I'm pretty sure I upgraded and paid a little for the app. But it is definitely worth it when it comes to the stuff you keep on your phones now a days. I don't like keeping a pin on mine or the pattern. Too much of a pain personally every time you want to go in your phone. On a side note, NEVER leave your note 2 lying around at a party. It should be in your hands dazzling ALL.
Just a thought, Any app will require a working internet connection before submitting any data/info to their servers.
The device can be easily switched on without sim, wiped and flashed and good to use.
But yes, these apps may help if the one who stole is not smart enough.

OMG reading all this got me paranoid and just gone ahead and purchased Cerberus and installed it on all my devices !!
So sorry to hear that your phone got stolen. I just hope you find it or somehow claim it on your insurance !! house car work or similar !!!
A coworker had the same thing happen to him at work a couple of years ago.
My group works in a limited access area with badge scanners on the door and cameras watching the doorway.
There were about 15 of us and we were all in a meeting. My coworker had left his phone on his desk. He remembered a few minutes into the meeting and went to grab it. It was gone.
It was clear none of us had taken it since we were all in the meeting together!
Reported it to security who quickly reviewed the CCTV video. A maintenance guy walked in, saw it laying on the desk, and grabbed it. Other cameras showed he immediately (not even 10 steps away) had pulled the battery. He walked straight outside to his vehicle and on the way tossed sim card in trash. I'm sure it was headed for a pawn shop at lunch that day.
My sister had her phone taken in a mall restroom. She was helping her young daughter in the stall and sat her phone on top of the toilet paper dispenser.
Of course she walked off without the phone. She washed up her hands and her daughter and literally got three steps out the door when she realized she didn't have the phone.
It was already gone and there was nobody else in the restroom!
I called the number immediately. Whoever took it answered and simply laughed and taunted us to come find them.
We ended up calling AT&T and having them disable the IMEI number. Never got the phone back.

That is sad!
Sorry to the OP.
Does anyone know of a way to keep the movement sensors turned on while the screen is off?
For example, I used my old phone as a pedometer but the note 2 disables the movement sensor if the screen is off. I know that most of these programs can blank the screen out but this causes massive battery drain. Any ideas would be helpful. Thanks.

No I haven't. Thank you for your input! But At the moment my phone isn't rooted so I can't try this solution.
Any other suggestions?

I remember my first root... sophomore year in college, Prof. Forester's micro econ... I was scared as hell to root my gizmo baby but as they say: the only things guaranteed is this world are death, taxes, and phone upgrades. The last one being conditional on the event that you allow you cute shiny gadget to finally leave the nest to become all the it was destined to be.
User name: boltis> it's time to let go. Sure you run the risk of your little bundle of joy failing miserably and falling to its death after breaking its neck in the cold hard floor. But I promise you, the possibilities are well worth the risk.
Root the phone boltis. Root it and earn your place among the evolved smartphone users here on xda.
Haha. Wonderful input! Made my day!
I have rooted some phones before, including my note 2, but my problem is that some of the apps I'm using don't support rooted devices. Including the software/app that my company uses for making calls. So that's not an option at the moment.
