[Q]Canadian t88v - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy Note II

Hi, everyone!
I have a question regarding modems for the Canadian variant of the Note 2 t889v. I am with Virgin Canada and my phone is the Wind variant. I had the i737m from Telus before this, and the speeds were phenomenal. I was wondering if there is a modem I can flash for this phone?
I live in the GTA.

There are two users who've reported enabling LTE on the T889V: Rail205 and myself.
Flashing one of the LTE enabled modems through CWM or TWRP (Rail205 flashed the T-Mobile LTE update one, I flashed the I317M LJ2 modem) alone has in both our cases resulted in IMEI corruption. Reflashing the original T889V modem brought bootloops. Flashing the LTE modem a second time stops the bootloops, but the phone gets no service and has no IMEI at this point. (From what I can tell other items in addition to the IMEI are also corrupt.)
This requires an NV items restore from a proper backup through one of the few suitable programs that can do it. (NV_reader_writer, QPST, QXDM, CDMA Workshop, etc...)
Expect to be stuck on that modem onwards. In my case, reflashing the T889V modem again just causes bootloops again.

I do not have LTE, though. I am just looking for better speeds.

As it stands, your T889V should be running in DC-HSPA, which has a theoretical maximum of 42 Mbps. Not too shabby, but LTE can run up to 75, and has consistently lower pings.
Provided you've got a VMC LTE microSIM with a compatible plan (pretty much anything that's got a set amount of data, VMC did have Unlimited Mobile Browser back in the day, and those plans/features would be stuck on HSPA no matter what.), LTE should work if the device supports it.
As far as anyone here can tell, the T889V's stock modem has LTE completely disabled, just like the original T889 releases. IIRC, flashing I317(M) NV items alone does not enable LTE, whereas flashing T889(V) items on an I317(M) enables AWS DC-HSPA. So your only way to get better speeds beyond those you currently have involve this convoluted, experimental, procedure.

I have seen you respond to another thread about flashing the T-Mobile modem on the T889V.
I do not have an LTE plan and so I am just looking for standard 4G speeds that I seem to not be having right now with the stock modem. As I've stated before, I've had the I317M and speeds were actually comparable to LTE speeds.
Can you point me to the right direction? I have backed up my efs (I don't know if this includes IMEI) by using Andromizer as I've heard horror stories of losing IMEI after flashing.
Sent from my SGH-T889V using xda app-developers app

Three requirements for LTE on VMC: device, non-unlimited data plan, provisioning (which is automatic unless your data plan/feature is really old, in which case you just have to call for them to add "forced provisioning"). That's it. Test it with a known working LTE device to check the latter two are OK in your case. (Friend's or with a demo phone at a VMC or Bell location.)
Drop the "4G" term, it's misleading. HSPA and LTE aren't.
Your previous 317M was in all likelihood running on LTE. And remember that both the HSPA and LTE Bell/Telus networks are joint. To get a bit more technical, the radio side is identical, the backhaul isn't.
I'm not sure Andromizer makes all the required backups in our case.

ICS radios on Telus network with Dark side Evolution 2

I flashed Evolution 2 with no problems and followed the instructions to a tee. The only thing I haven't done is the cache wipe. The problem I am having so far is with the radio. I get no data and a data packet roaming message from the status bar. I can only get data working is if I flash the Telus modem prepped for ICS. I had similar problems as well with other roms and I'm guessing the radio rom that only plays nice with Telus is their modem. Am I wrong? If so any suggestions? I'm on the Telus network if it helps

Ok, first things first: do the cache wipe, and use the script provided with the ROM for it. Trust me, it won't delete any of your data, it's perfectly safe. (I speak from experience) The only thing you will notice is that your phone will take a really long time to boot immediately after the wipe. That's expected, let it be.
To your question:
It makes no sense to me why using TELUS' radio on TELUS should be the only way for your phone have data. I can't test this for you as I am not a TELUS client, but I have used the TELUS modem on Rogers and Mobilicity without any trouble at all. The one thing I can think of that may do this is your modem's band settings: the ROM comes with a modem for T-Mobile, which uses a different frequency for its data network. This is how you (try to) fix this:
Go into the Phone application and dial the following:
*#*#2263#*#*
Upon hitting the last * you will see the service menu for the phone, allowing you to set which bands the phone will be looking for for a network. Then press (3) for GSM and then (5) for GSM 850/1900. This should do it for TELUS. If this doesn't work, try using (3) for GSM and then (7) for GSM ALL, or if all else fails, just go into the menu and set (1) for full Automatic.
Another thing, though: I don't understand why you would want to use the T-Mobile radio, when the TELUS one gives you something all of us here can only wish for: presence on two networks at the same time. You can be riding an elevator or take your time in the parking lot without loosing data even for a second! This radio is meant for the TELUS network, and is giving you the best possible experience on it. If it works for you, my advise is to stick with it. The T-Mobile one isn't a step up for you.
Thank you for the detailed response. It is very appreciated. The reason I used the T Mobile modem was that it was the one provided in TDJ's link and I thought it might be more "compatible" with the T-Mobile leak. I didn't know about the advantage that the Telus modem provided. Could you explain what is meant by prescence on two networks? Either case the Telus modem has been very stable thus far and I think I'll keep using it for now.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-T989 using xda premium
Well, this flavour of the Galaxy S2 is not meant for TELUS. It is meant for T-Mobile, an AWS carrier. This phone cannot work very fast on TELUS as it does not support its data network fully. Worse still, last Q4 this phone was pitched against Rogers' LTE flavour of the S2, the Skyrocket, whose ICS leak we were running until recently. TELUS had to beef it up beyond the 14Mbps possible with HSPA so that it would compete.
So, they loaded it up with a state-of-the-art HSDPA radio, which allows it to aggregate signal from two HSPA towers to get its speed edge. I don't think this is done very often, if at all: it's quite remarkable TELUS did that. In a nutshell, your phone can sit on two cellular networks at the same time, the 850Mhz and the 1900Mhz one, and aggregate them to give you the theoretical 28Mbps. Still not LTE, but in the ballpark. You own a T989D, where the D stands for dual towers, and the 850Mhz band means you can stream music uninterrupted while walking into an elevator and then out again.
So that's it, in a nutshell. If I were on TELUS, I would be running this radio as well, up until the day I can replace it with another TELUS radio.
Hello,
For people having problems With the TMO Radio on Telus.
The Tmo radio sucks on Telus it will break Data connection, so use the Telus radio. But you can not flash over TMO ICS Rom with the Telus RIL files, it will break signal all together.
If you are already using a TMO ICS rom use one of the Telus radios in the Nexusmod thread with the system folder removed or remove the system folder before you flash the radio.
If your getting ready to flash an Ics rom and your on Telus radio, skip the flashing radio step. I hope that helps.
Though I heard rumors that the Telus radio doesnt quite work perfectly with the TMO leak
If we could use this thread for problems with Telus users using the leak that would be great
After flashing the Telus modem with the RIL file removed, ie installing the modem from the Nexus Mod thread in the dev section, this Rom has definitely more stable data connection. There are still some random drop outs but not as often as the TMo radios. Actually I have flashed many of the ICS leaks and there has, in my experience, data drop outs with any TMo modem on the Telus network. I'm very happy thus far with Evolution 2. There are occasionally some app crashes and camera glitches but overall nothing deal breaking. Amazing job on this ROM.

Do you think this could cause a phone force close with the Virgin Mobile network?
EDIT: Yep. That was the problem. Thank you guys so much, I've been stressing for days... The Telus radio fixed everything.
Working for me here. I'm not sure if my speeds are where they should be though, as in they seem to be half of what they should be. This leads me to think that the phone might only be seeing and connecting to one tower instead of two for the HSPA. My baseband shows up as Unknown too, so I'm not sure if that is a big deal or not.
I am a Telus user and to be honest found my quickest speeds with the Blaze ics modem, but I live in a rural area. I am trying the UVCL8 modem now and it is okay. I was getting some data roaming errors with this one, but it seems to have smoothed itself out. The Telus & Tmobile radios as I understand it are supposed to both supposed to support HSPA+ or a theoretical maximum of 42mpbs. I would confirm all of your apn settings and make sure they are all fine.

Bizarre. I just tried the Blaze modem and had extremely slow speeds on speedtest. Like 1 mpbs, whereas I had at least 10 with Telus' modem. It isn't like I was getting slow slow speeds or anything I guess. Just kind of strange.

T-Mobile and AT&T Note 2 cross-compatibility

After a pretty serious amount of searching, I still haven't been able to find a straightforward explanation of what works on which Note 2 on which network as far as 3G/4G service goes. (There was only one that came close, and it still didn't seem to actually be complete.) While the consensus seems to be that the T-Mo phone is the most flexible, what I've been able to cobble together is that the answer is much closer to "depends on what you want to use it for." (Duh, right?) So here's what I understand so far -- please feel free to correct me if I have any of this wrong, and I'll update (or if you think carriers/devices should be added to the list, comment with sources and I'll add on the info):
----
T-Mo T889 (stock unlocked): up to 42 MBps DC-HSPA+ on T-Mobile network (1900MHz); up to HSPA on AT&T network (trying to verify)
AT&T i317 (stock, unlocked): LTE on 700MHz on AT&T network (and future AWS when AT&T gets around to deploying); EDGE on T-Mobile network
T889 with T-Mo LTE unlock (est. Spring 2013): may possibly also enable LTE on AT&T network.
T889 with flashed AT&T radio (or NV partition edit): unknown -- no success to date. Hypothesized that it may enable LTE on AT&T network.
i317 with flashed T889 radio (or NV partition edit): loses AT&T LTE capability; gains HSPA+ (non-DC) on T-Mobile network (DC yet to be verified?)
No idea as to what would happen if/when an i317 can be flashed with a post-Spring 2013 T-Mo radio.
----
So the conclusions I seem to draw from this are:
If you want guaranteed highest speeds out of either service today, and some possibility of T-Mo LTE support in the future, get the AT&T phone and get used to playing around with radio swaps.
If you want the guaranteed highest speed out of T-Mo in a few months (and now, obviously), and some possibility of getting the highest speed out of AT&T (aka LTE) whenever xda-developers' ingenuity figures it out, get the T-Mo phone.
How does this sound to you guys?
Bewn looking into the same thing looks as the t889 should somehow be able to get lte on att but still cant find how

Short answer, AT&T Note 2 can get full speed HSPA+ on T-Mobile and LTE on AT&T... I currently have it that way... You need to activate AWS bands on NV partition... I also have the T889 and the T889 can do the same... Remember what I have been telling since day 1... They are both the same phone... Just with different signals pre activated by their respective carriers...

As I understand it the note 2 is the first phone to have all the different model have the same physical design and the software is very close to the same as well. I beleive that there are two internatinal ones the gsm and lte. All the us versions are based off the lte one so they are all very similar. I think we even have a few roms in the dev section now that are based off sprints rom. I could be wrong though. I was a little confused at first because usually on tmo our phone would be based off the gsm interntinal but not this time.
I gotta say I am really happy with samsung. And I am impressed with what they have accomplished with this phone and the sgs3. They told the carriers to go to hell and did it their way this time. I think they were able to do it because android is like 60% of the worlds cell phone market and samsung is like 75% of android sales. I am sure the numbers are off but I remember reading about that last year. Sorry to go off topic a little bit.

Uh, that's his point. And mine, for that matter. AT&T only so far - meaning my OP is currently correct. Nobody has done it on T-Mo (at least that has reported it here). "Hardware is the same," yeah, we all know that, but we also know the software isn't, so it's a matter of what we've actually tried and succeeded with and have confirmation of.
When somebody actually reports a success with T-Mo they can confirm, I'll update.

Sorry, poor assumption on your part. I found that. Did you read past the first post? First post says DC works (which was an edit, apparently yesterday) but post 3 says it only indicates DC, no actual speed bump to DC or 42 speeds. Lots of failures on that thread too. So I listed what worked for the OP. If you'd like to confirm dual-5MHz operation (which you didn't explicitly when you posted your success in that post), maybe some screenshots of the speed change if you have them, that should be fine and I'll edit.

Posts like yours aren't much better than trolling. What did it add to the conversation? Search for what?
If you'd actually searched and read the numerous threads across both the i317 and T889 forums, including both the General and Q&A sections, like I have, you'd see multiple claims of it works, or it doesn't work, and varying methods described with people saying they work and don't work. TEKHD has bounced back and forth multiple times on this, along with a few others.
I was just asking for clarification that this was done on a T889 or not, since TEKHD said in the post I was replying to that it does, but in the thread he linked he said it didn't.
This is a T889 forum, isn't it? What do the users of the T889 care about an i317 hack unless the same hack will work for us?

Ah ok... so i just got ATT today and am using it on my tmobile note 2. DO I need to do anything at all to be getting the best speeds or is it getting the fastest it can right now until someone gets LTE working>?
I hope you guys can help me, I'm frustrated already, I bought an AT&T SAMSUNG-SGH-I317 and also purchased an unlock code, phone was working just fine with 4g on AT&T ( Tested ) but after unlocking I just don't get service when I use a T Mobile or Simple Mobile SIM.
On the About Phone -> Status I do get "Network: T-Mobile/Simple Mobile" ( Depending on the SIM I use ), but I don't even get EDGE, I cant make calls, I get the annoying emergency calls only, its making me crazy. Is there a way to fix this issue?
( I already added the APN settings, but im sure I don't need that to make calls, or get EDGE, I don't know what else to do to fix this ).
Thanks

Im confused... do you have a T-mobile Note 2? or a N7100? I beleieve the N7100 is the AWS International one, the Tmobile Note 2 is T889... or you could have an N7100 ROM flashed on a T889 (which existed in order to get 4.1.2 before the Tmo release).

LTE on Canadian Note2

So you reflashed the LTE modem and it is running fine? or you went back to the HSPA+ one. Right now I am on T889UVALL4. To scared to flash back the LTE one. Maybe when I get more time to deal with a loss of imei again I will try the LTE one again.
Update: Flashed the Tmobile LTE modem again and is running fine thus far.

is there any chance of having tutorial made? i just have a videotron t889v phone running on bell now, but no LTE. and as stated, it sucks having an LTE able phone with no LTE lol
thanks!
Not much of a guide really out there. I flashed the tmobile modem for lte, lost my imei, managed to restore it and now have lte. Although I am now stuck with a tmobile modem. If I flash a t889v modem I go into a boot loop. Think it would be best to wait until there is a proper way of getting it done.

are you on a canadian carrier? I want LTE for bell on this phone.... it doesnt matter if i lose the wind, videtron and moblicity compatability as only videotron is available where i live, and they're no good for me.
Yes im on Telus. Check your pm.
You don't even have to lose AWS DC-HSPA as I found out last December after dropping by a Videotron kiosk. This was further confirmed by Sjravi's tutorial to enable AWS on the I317.
i have just 1 question, is your battery life the same after you enabled LTE? now i can go about 1-2 days with heavy usage on my phone without having to charge it. just wondering before i jump in....
I've modded my phone early enough that I don't have much basis for comparison, but I have no issue going through a heavy usage day with plenty to spare. Trying two might be pushing it, but I've done it with low usage days. YMMV.
Sent from my SGH-T889V using xda app-developers app
With just the lte modem I have not noticed much if any battery drain. Am getting some crazy fast download/upload speeds...
and it shows LTE next to the signal bars?
No I dont have the lte icon, not included in this rom. But when I go to about phone status It shows lte. Getting 42mbps down and 21 up

[Q] I317 on TMobile Network

Can anyone suggest the best modem to flash on my I317 in order to increase my data speeds using the TMobile Network? If this has already been addressed please excuse the duplicate post.
Thanks!!!

Good thing is I already been through this. First tou need to use QPST and enable AWS Bands once you do that youll have MMS and 4g. I have done it on CAMA4 and the previous one. I had better service on CAMA4. Have not tried on the new modem. When you upgrade modem you have to enable AWS bands every time. Well atleast for me...hope this helps

Thanks so much for your response. Would you have any suggestions on where I can locate this QPST tool?
What's your location? I've gotten pretty good speeds and coverage on a non modded i717 in refarmed Chicago, even a few spots of LTE.
I was using stock rom with stock radio UCAMA4 and was able to get hsapa since I am in the refarm 1900 region. Today, I just noticed that I am getting LTE speed. The spee is decent with 12 down and 6 up. Not blazing speed but good enough for me.
haven't tried new modem yet.

I am primarily in Rockland & Orange Counties of NY. As an update I was able to download the Qualcomm tool and adjust the AWS files using a video I found. Also did an NV backup. I am now receiving HSPA & HSPA+ when I used to get EDGE in a much wider geographic location then before.
A broader issue is that TMobile has not focused on rolling out 4G in the more suburban areas of NY. As I am not tied to a contract I can try AT&T and see if I fair better. Since there are a ton of WiFi locations that Cablevision provides I do get by.
Thanks for the input!!!!

You cant flash Odin att rom on a tmobile you will hard brick it. Now as for the modem, Im experiencing the same reception issues on my note 3(running on att) you mentioned and i do believe its because we don't have the att modem installed. I have tried odin and mobile odin and both wont install. I believe one way we can push an att modem to out tmobile note 3 is through custom recovery or a flashable zip, but such file does not exist yet.

Mentioning the bars is taboo I think. haha. It's been discussed before here but the only way you can compare is with a signal app that compares db's. The formula that t-mobile uses to calculate bars is different than AT&T's. Also AT&T got in hot water a while back for "faking" bars. Sure they say "more bars in more places" but they fix it to show more bars. If you can do an experiment and compare a N900A beside a N900T with the db's that would be helpful. The carriers have a lot of control over the radios I imagine.
Think about this. At some point, as LTE signal get's weaker, HSPA+ is going to be faster than LTE. At what db strength do you as a carrier fall back to HSPA+? For a T-mobile phone that usually runs on T-mobile with a faster HSPA+ network than AT&T's that may be higher.

Totally agreed, Wife's N900A shows 2-3 bars my N900T shows 1-2 bars. Db is identical however, using Network signal info. Both phones are on the same network.
