I'm on ALJC. I used the toolkit to root with custom recovery and busybox. Then along came the MA7 update and I want to apply it via OTA.
So, using the Toolkit, I then flashed stock recovery, used Triangle Away to reset the flash counter, used SuperSU Pro to unroot. Then I let the update download. When the phone boots to apply the update the phone gets about 1/4 of the way through and the Android falls over dead with the nasty triangle-of-death.
I've checked many posts to try to determine if I'm missing a step or doing something out-of-sequence. In any case, any tips on what am I doing wrong?
Thanks!
I went ahead and flashed stock and did a double OTA update and re-installed everything. Now I'm at MA7.

I have a rooted S3 with CWM at my recovery image and the OTA update came out and everytime i try to update, the update downloads but when the phone reboots into recovery/download mode, it fails right there and doesnt install the update. How can go ahead and make this happen and fix the issue that I have. Im afraid i might have to unroot and then update. HELPPPP!!!!

Its your recovery, not the root. But you will lose root, most likely. Use ota rootkeeper from the market to back up and restore root. Also, you will need to go back to 3e recovery (stock recovery). Out, just flash the cwm lh9 zip in the general section
I had a very similar issue after rooting. After searching through a ton of the posts under Mr. Robinsons Sticky on rooting, these are the steps that I used.
1.Go to Google Play and download OTA Rootkeeper,
2.Run it and choose the Option to protect root AND then choose the disable root phone option.
3.Then go to Settings -- About Device -- Software Update and download the update.
4.Once the update finishes installing the phone will reboot.
5. Open OTA Rootkeeper and re-enable root
this is what worked for me.
Here's a thread with the OTA in a zip you can flash right from CWM without losing root: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=31802808

Hi, I recently got a galaxy s3 (canadian version) 2 weeks ago from Mobilicity and just recently rooted following this method : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1771687. Before doing the rooting I was on the JB 4.1.1 update they released recently. Also used this method: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=34661189&postcount=1 to unlock the phone
I would check daily but today I just noticed my device's status was Modified and I am unable to check for updates. I'm not sure what caused the modified status. I checked in download mode and my count is still 0/No. I also checked Triangle Away and it was the same. My device was normal when I first installed and used the root, I can only remember I just updated a few apps yesterday. I tried flashing with odin the rooted system image and it's the same.
I would like to be able to use the stock rom with root and updates, and set my device to normal status (I'd rather not update through Odin every time there is an update, and I am very satisfied with the stock rom). I've already backed up my data using Titaniumbackup, all my contact info and music (the stuff I only care about). Help appreciated.
EDIT: I also have installed Openrecovery script using goomanager, could that be the issue?

The counter is 0, should I still try to reset it?
Edit: just used TriangleAway, device status still modified, I can access the software update now though, but it gets stuck while checking

You will not be able update via your carrier OAT if you rooted your device. The only thing you can do is to unroot the device, do the update, and re-root the device again. Visit www.galaxys3root.com on how to root and re-root.

If that is all you wanted just flashing the root66 rom from mrRobinson's threat in you original post could have accomplished it.
This would not trip the flash counter if it was still 0, what did it was installing a custom recovery like open recovery.
Follow this steps to get to a 4.1.1 "unmodified" or normal stock system with only root injected to it. You will be able to check and receive OTA updates, but if you ever update your rom OTA you will loose root.
1-download root66 jellybean rom for mobilicity from mrRobinson's thread, there are instructions there how to flash it with desktop Odin. (this will keep everything in your rom and will give you the stock recovery back, so the counter does not trip again)
2-download, install and run triangle away from chainfire's thread this will reset the counter to 0. Search for it.
Now your counter is 0 again, nothing is tripping it, room is rooted but it will still say "modified" and OTA updates may still not work, to fix it you need a clean start. Do a system factory reset, start over fresh and life will be beautiful.

Hi I just found out that we got an update. Now usually when a new update comes out I odin back to stock and then update and reinstall twrp then make a nandroid of my stock rom. Then I go back to my AOKP or whatever I am using which is usually something AOSP. In this way I have the new modem and I have a nandroid of the latest stock rom. But last time we got an update I ran ito the problem of the stock recovery rewriting itself. So I was able to use the the security hole to root the phone and then I was able put twrp on. Now this update is supposed to patch up that hole so how do we root? Use the tookit to stop it from rewriting? Or I guess I could just flash the new modem and forget about it. So does anyone know how to get it done?
Also does anyone know where to get a odin copy of the newest update?
I followed someone's instructions and installed ota rootkeeper from play store. Updated phone and kept it rooted

CF-Auto root still works.
I have Samsung SPH-L710 and I had it rooted with Mr.Robinson's method on 4.1.1. I had RoamControl installed and I had it on force roaming. Yesterday it was 4 AM, and I wasn't thinking. I accidentally accepted the OTA update to 4.1.2. So it installed successfully, but of course I lost root access. I was stuck roaming and it wouldn't change. I then used Kies to restore my phone. It flashed 4.1.1 onto it and it still will only roam. I have searched for this issue and cannot find anything that seems to work. Thanks ahead of time. I am worried that I will be stuck roaming for eternity.
Make sure you have RoamControl shut off. Then update PRL / Profile.

I dialed ##72786# and that fixed the roaming issue. But now I have another issue. I'm on 4.1.1 rooted with Mr.Robinson's method and I downloaded Voodoo OTA RootKeeper. I backed up the root and then accepted the 4.1.2 OTA update. But with the root protected it wouldn't reboot after I accept it. It just keeps saying "rebooting..." So I need to find a way to update to 4.1.2 and keep my root. I would really hate to flash to 4.1.2 and root it with Chainfire's method and then have to use triangle away.

why would you hate to do that, it's all pretty straight forward... our you can just flash the stock rooted Rom that's in my Sig to update, but that will also trip the flash counter... it's really not that big a deal to trip that though, if something goes wrong there is a thread by billiard412 that has a stock Rom that you flash that we'll bring you back to 100% stock and will also reset the flash counter... no need to be afraid to trip the counter bud, it can easily be reset

Thanks! So just unroot it with Chainfire's Superuser and than accept the OTA to 4.1.2, then use Chainfire's ODIN root? Best way?
Update: I just unrooted it through SU and tried to accept the OTA after I rebooted it and it still won't work. And sorry for being a noob, but I can't seem to find the stock rooted ROM for 4.1.2 to flash with Odin.

There isn't a rooted stock .tar for Odin, only.zips for recovery... Check my Sig and download the stock routed Rom, flash in recovery and then reset the flash counter with triangle away... although, my flash counter is at like 7, so there's no need to test the flash counter unless you're bringing it into Sprint for repair

What exactly are you trying to do? Get the official update or flash a custom rom?
If you want the official, remove root and install the OTA (you can use towelroot afterward to root).
If you want a custom rom, follow the FULL instructions in the rom's OP that you choose.

Thank you
I want to the official ROM for KK, which I can find.
OK so from what you said the first thin I do is unroot? I will research that.
I was wondering if I can go direct from 4.1.2 to 4.4.2?
I would use ODIN on my PC?
Do I have to do any sort of backing up ( I have Titanium pro) before hand, restore procedures?

Tibu is my fav backup app, just make sure you don't restore system app/data. Just make a batch backup and restore once you've flashed KK.
Unroot can be done directly in SuperSU (app).
Yes you can go directly to KK (or any other version), just don't downgrade once you'll have the 4.3+ bootloader or you'll brick your device.
And yes, use Odin on your PC, mobile Odin doesn't flash bootloaders.
The entire process is fairly simple. Just gotta be patient
galaxy S3 AT&T: from stock 4.1.2 to 4.4.2
I am new to these forms, please help me with my questions.
I have a smartphone SGS III AT&T. It is unlocked and working perfect with:
ROM: 4.1.2 Stock
Baseband: DMG2
Kernel: 3.0.31-1300972
Build Number: JZO54K.I747UCDMG2
I am not in USA, so my Smartphone is unlocked.
Initially I used the *#197328640# commands to unlock it
I want to apply enewman17 thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2789917 to upgrade to 4.4.2
My questions are:
1. When the procedure is finished, the smartphone still unlocked?
2. If it became locked, is there a free procedure to release it again?
regards

Unlock is "permanent". You shouldn't lose root but everything you do is at your own risk.

Ran all procedure http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=2789917.
My I747 AT&T is now in 4.4.2. No problems at all. Still Unlocked.
One point more:
When I was in 4.1.2 Stock, I was not able to use "USB Theter" because I am not with AT&T SIM Card. With this version I can USB Theter without restriction.
unrooted 4.1.1 won't update dead android
My AT&T SG3 was rooted until yesterday with stock 4.1.1. I unrooted, re flashed stock image and stock recovery. The phone status says "Normal" now so I think I successfully unrooted. When I try to do the OTA after downloading, it goes to a screen which says installing then updating with an incremental percent counter. When it reaches about 29%, it just reboots and comes back with "Install Interrupted The software update could not be installed". When I do "adb reboot recovery" from a command window, I see a dead android with a red triangle and I assume that has something to do with it or is some kind of symptom. Is there anything I can do to get the latest stock image installed? Did I miss something in the unroot process?

I spent several hours on this again today. I thought I had discerned the fix when I found a post showing the custom download count on the download screen and references to the yellow triangle program to reset it. I rerooted the phone, put stock recovery back, zeroed out the counter with yellow triangle, put the stock image back with ODIN, factory reset, and ended up with an unrooted phone with zero count. The download screen now says:
CUSTOM BINARY DOWNLOAD: No
CURRENT BINARY: Samsung Official
SYSTEM STATUS: Official
QUALCOMM SECUREBOOT: ENABLE (in light Grey)
I thought that would do it but the OTA still fails and I still see the red triangle on the stock recovery page. The only thing I can think of now is that SuperSU is still on the phone. It is disabled but still has 12KB of data that I don't know how to clear. I used the stock image from the skipsoft Android Toolkit.
Any ideas would be really appreciated.
I would steer clear of the toolkit. Follow enewman17's how to update thread in the General section. Seems to have a pretty good success rate.

If you want the 4.4.2 in your S3, follow enewman17's http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2789917 Thread.
It worked perfect for me from 4.1.2 stock to 4.4.2. The final result is the same that you get by OTA (if OTA works)

I solved my problem by a convoluted process that I could not recommend but will lay out as best I can in case anyone is that desperate. I had re-rooted and un-rooted a couple times since my last post and finally decided to try a different stock image. I found a link to one in an article
how-to-unroot-att-galaxy-s3-sgh-i747 (sorry - not allowed to post URL)
The link is to stockroms.net. Really slow download - it took a couple hours. After the download (and unzip),
I attached my unrooted phone via USB cable to my computer.
Installed it with ODIN and watched the phone reboot
It seem to get stuck on the Samsung splash screen.
I went into recovery mode and noticed that - at last - I did not have the red triangle and no dead android. I tried wiping the cache a couple times from the recovery screen but it still seemed to get stuck at the splash screen (not sure if I waited long enough).
I finally did the factory reset from the recovery and it finally came back to life and went through the whole initialization thing. I confirmed a couple times that the red triangle was gone and noted that I had gone from Android version 4.1.1 to 4.04. Maybe that was the key or maybe I had a bad stock version of 4.1.1. IDK. But I started going through a series of updates. I am currently at version 4.3 and downloading what I hope will be the last update.
Started with 4.1.1 and used outdated stock image to go back to
4.04 - small update but version still
4.04 - cleared data from AT&T Update App to get around the wait 24 hours - got the update installed to version
4.1.2 - checked for update and got upgraded to
4.3 - check for update wanted me to wait 24 hours and I could not see how to clear the data - so changed the phone's date to next day. Automatically started downloading a new update - I'm hoping its the last
