I've had my HTC One X for almost a year (via Orange shop here in the UK). I've only occasionally taken pictures with it, but I've recently started using the camera a lot more recently due to a new family arrival. Something I have noticed is that when people are in the photo, any reds or pinks in skin tones (faces, hands) *really* stand out quite excessively.
I have searched on this topic and I've found lots of references to an overall hue / tint problem occurring with various colours. However, this can't really be described as an overall tint. It's almost as if there's a horrible nonlinearity with the response to reds / pinks or something. If I take a picture of a face or hands, the reds in the fingertips or cheeks stand out very excessively.
I *think* it's okay with the front camera, but I'll test more to confirm that.
My camera settings were initially as default. I have tried fiddling with the various settings, and setting the saturation to -1 does help the problem a bit. But decreasing the saturation of course reduces the saturation in all colours and I can still see that the response to red is still excessive.
I haven't dealt with HTC before, but from all the horror stories I've heard I'm not sure if I want to go through the pain of returning the phone.
Two thoughts:
- Is there any way at all that the camera can be calibrated on an individual colour basis? I'm guessing this would be something only available via a custom ROM if such settings existed. Using a custom ROM could be tricky for me because this would I assume mean losing the Orange Signal Boost app, which would be a pain.
- I've noticed replacement rear-facing camera assemblies aren't too expensive on eBay. I'm an embedded electronics engineer so I'd be quite happy to disassemble the phone and fit a new camera. The real question, though, is whether the problem I have is actually within the camera itself. For all I know, some kind of factory colour calibration could exist for the cameras on the motherboard, meaning replacement of the camera would be pointless. If on the other hand the calibration is all within the camera module itself, perhaps this is worth a shot.
Any thoughts please, particularly in relation to my last point? I'm still considering obtaining a replacement rear-facing camera from eBay and swapping it over. However, before I go ahead and buy one, it would be very good if anyone out there can actually state from experience whether or not colour reproduction problems are an issue with the camera module itself. Or, to put it another way, has anyone ever replaced camera modules and found colour reproduction to be different between them?

I switched from Sprint's Galaxy S 2 to Tmobile's and there seems to be a problem. The screen has a a weird color distortion in the middle when taking pictures. As if the white balance is off. When I use flash it seems OK. But it only seems to be a problem in low light situations. If they won't exchange it as a defect, I might switch back.
Have you guys had any similiar issues?

I looked at a few of my photos. I don't see anything like that. Very odd.
All phone cameras will display this to a degree. It's the pink-hue spot in the middle. The degree to which they display this is a function of the camera and post-processing that has been done to the pictures.
Most Android cameras do this, I've yet to see one that doesn't. In particular, HTC phones. Once you've learned how to spot the "pink effect", it's really hard to not see it anymore.
But yours looks more severe than others. I'd suggest either trying different white colors modes to see if the problem goes away. If it doesn't you can always opt for a swap to see if you'd get a slightly better camera.
I believe the effect is due to the sensor nature on camera phones insofar that they don't allow enough light in relative to things like DSLR.
I had it bad on my Desire HD, and I was just taking some pics with the GSII. I can see a bit of it, but not as bad as the DHD. I think all cams do that no matter how good they are on the phones.
I went ahead and replaced it at the Tmobile store. The rep tried to play it as normal. Wasn't taking that as an answer. My Sprint version was perfect. There was no color distortion whatsoever.
The new ia a lot better. It's still there to a degree. It takes some squinting to see. I might have a keeper. I was worried that if things don't work out, I'd switch to the Vibrant and wait for the Nexus.

Just got a One X and thankfully all the reported 'defects' don't seem to be there. However the screen colours are far too warm. The biggest problem is with flesh tones looking very reddish. Its best illustrated by taking a picture of my hand with the camera, which shows up very red indeed. However if I import the picture to my PC its acceptable. My screen is Acer which supposedly runs colder than Sharp and Sony, but thats not my case.
Should I exchange my unit? I have 48hours to return the phone with no questions asked. Its perfect otherwise and I heard that the warmness disappears over time. If true, how long does it take for the warmness to normalize. Also is there a software available now or in the near future that would solve this (rom, mod, etc.)?
PS> I'm still on 1.28.415.9 because I haven't received an update yet.
I just tried using "Screen Adjuster" from the Play Store, but the results were horrible. I really need to know whether the warmness subsides overtime because otherwise I have a perfect unit and don't wanna gamble it away for a creaky, ripply, dead pixel unit.
I passed by the store and compared my phone to the two display models and a sealed unit. All three had the excessive red hue warm colors as mine. When I say excessive I mean very excessive. Its best viewed with the Mirror application. It almost makes me look like I'm fluorescent pink Almost the color of this icon.
Someone please chime in. How red do you look in the Mirror app?
I'm begging here, someone please acknowledge my existence and answer my simple question. Does the Mirror app make you look red/pink like your are badly sunburned?

Thanks so much for answering me. Vascularised is a great way of putting it. I can almost see the blood flowing through my capillaries. I hope this is just a software issue. Outside in daylight its much much better.
HTC should have added a light in front panel.
And after "vascularised" it has a litlle "drunk" effect.
After ZombieBooth, HTC just invented DrunkBooth ...
I tested the front camera some more using Skype. It seems that there are two reasons for the red hue. The camera software is messed up, and so is the screen itself. When using Skype the image from the front camera looks very red on the phone, but it doesn't look as bad on the PC (although still red). This leads me to believe that the camera software is not calibrated, and the screen further compounds the problem. I'm hoping 1.29 update will help a bit.
I just ordered this phone as lost my optimistic 3d. If this is a problem with all sets I can't understand its not mentioned in any of the reviews I've seen. Hopefully means forward is a bit messed up

Well as far as I'm concerned I have not seen, or heard of, any One X unit that doesn't have this problem. So far I have personally examined 6 phones that have this problem (all worse than my phone). Also three XDA users have also confirmed this (one on this thread and two in other threads). I have yet to see or hear that a One X exists out there which does not have an extremely red hued front camera.
Until someone confirms otherwise, it seems to me to affect ALL One X's.
In camera settings, put the saturation to -1, this looks far more realistic. However, I don't know if it looks the same on another device as is does for me. For all I know, it could be making my hand white for the pc.

Aside from waiting on an update, would flashing a rom or kernal help at all with the HTC one camera issues?? I really want to avoid getting my phone replaced for a warranty replacement. I am passed the 14 days, i just rooted my phone and got S-Off. Someone please help!!

It isn't a software issue.

If you are having issues with the camera then you really need to have it replaced under warranty. The issues we are having is from a bad image sensor, not software. The bad sensor will have more issues with purple tinting in the edges, generally turn out darker and more grainy even at the same exposure and ISO. I have a few sample pics on Google Plus. Also below is my HTC One with a bad image sensor issue (left) next to a CLNR from Verizon (right) that does not have this issue. They are running the same software and have the same default settings applied before I recorded this. You can see the camera software on the bad one cycling through various levels trying to optimize the image.

So bottom line - Don't wait on an OTA to fix this. If you have an HTC One with a bad sensor then get it back to stock and replace it under warranty.
Mine seems to be ok. Mine actually when put camera down will stay black for a bit, then the purple will creep in. But it definitely doesn't change around a lot like the video shows. Sounds like I got a good one. Mines also the blue one from best buy so, idk if that makes a difference.

The good sensors still have a bit of issue with tinting in very dim photos, right at the cut off where the automatic flash would otherwise kick in. That can be fixed with software. What I had on the first one was no consistent across the entire image. For lack of a better term it just wasn't as sensitive as the replacement or my T-Mobile HTC One's sensor.

Uh, sorry to break it to you but both are equally defective. If it shows anything other than pitch black (maybe with a tiny bit of noise) when you set it down, your sensor's bad. Both of yours are going bright pink in total darkness and have severe tinting in low light shots.

If I lock the bad one to ISO 200 still pure pink. The replacement is black center with pick edges. Did you check the pics on my G+ album? There is definitely a difference. Could be this new one is bad too, I don't have my T-Mobile HTC One any longer to compare side by side. I'll mess around with them both and grab some screen shots so you can see what I am talking about with the ISO setting.

It's definitely better but it's not good. A working sensor should not be showing discolored edges on any ISO setting, especially the lower ones like 200.
You can see a pretty severe tint in these three pictures:

Agreed, better but not good. Poor choice of words on my part. In any event, there is a wide variety of image quality even with the same software which was my point to begin with.
Received replacement #2 yesterday. Still notice a maroon (this time) noise at ISO800 and can definitely see it at ISO1600. ISO 400 is dark starting out and just barely gets a tint in the corners when the camera is left sitting on. No issues at ISO 200 and lower. Left to right in the attachment is original, replacement #1 and replacement #2. Screenshots are from #2. Guessing this is as good as it's going to get.

Dose any one know how much it will cost to fix this issue at phone repairer in Australia. Not under warranty and what part of the phone needs fixing. I would like to give them as much info as possible so they don't start trouble shootng with all the stuff I have tried already.

Hi,
I will purchase M8 or S5 tomorrow.
I want to know about the camera's common issues:
1. Pink Tint issue (M7 was plagued with that after few months of usage)
2. Camera Glass/Lens getting scratches
Please do share your experience and if these issues have been fixed in recently manufactured batches or not?
If you would are aware of other camera or non camera related issues please do share it as I will buy a new phone tomorrow.
Thanks in Advance

1: I'd say its subjective. I say there is no issue, others say there is (but probably not as bad as the M7). You can read some more here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2783070
2. Still seems to be an issue. But not sure if anything has been done about it on latest batches. The fix is easy, just polish off the useless lens coating (and its just that, a cheap coating, its not the glass that is scratching).
In contrast to the S5, the M8 has a much better build quality and better speakers. You can't fix the cheap plastic exterior of the S5.

I need to confirm if that only happens when the auto settings turn up the ISO in dark scenes.
On your second comment
I really like the M8, apart from the controversial camera. And now that I am sort of trying to overlook the camera, i find out there are issue with it apart from being a extremely low res one.
But overall I find S5 to be balanced phone.
Anyways thank for your input.

That's what the thread I linked is saying, yes. Personally, I use my M8 for snapshots indoors pretty often, and many times in low light (although maybe not extreme low light) and do not consider the pics to be overly tinted pink/red/etc. I just looked at my Gallery, and of the past couple hundred or so, I can see maybe 3 photos that have a slightly pink hue to them. And its not something that I would have noticed, if you hadn't mentioned it. But of course, different things bother different people.

The lower res is only an issue if you are blowing up photos or cropping them. In bright daylight, maybe some detail is a bit lost compared to higher MP cameras. But its not a big difference (at least not a deal breaker IMO), and the M8's performance in low light is superior due to the larger pixels. Check out the following webpage which compares the cameras on the current flagships of the time; in particular the "Lab Scene" in low light. Not only does the M8 take a much better photo (S5 pic is almost unusable), but its actually less pink than the S5 (and others, for that matter).

Have you actually held the phones in hand? I was debating the 2 phone myself back in the Spring. They looked very comparable on paper. But once I actually compared the two in person, it was no contest. The S5 just felt so cheap and the M8 felt much more high end in appearance and feel. And the laggy TouchWiz on the S5 does it no favors compared to the snappy M8.

I purchased both the m8 and the s5 back in April. Interface and performance hands down m8. I gave up on touchwiz after putting up with it in the s2,3&4. Features wise, s5 has more to offer but if you prefer the premium build and seamless interface, you can manage without a 16mp camera and a fingerprint scanner. Camera is fine for viewing on laptops, the phone etc. Its good enough though the s5 camera and m8 camera are in no matchup. And since most will change their smartphone every year or 2, its safe to pick one and try it out.. Not a LT investment.

There's far more to a phone than the cheap situational cameras they have. I suggest researching other aspects of the phones and going with what is more appealing to you.
Basing decisions on the sub par cameras all phones have seems trivial.
Get the phone that suits your phone needs.
A 100 dollar camera will blow away every phone camera out there with ease. ?
Did some comparisons between the Moto G5 plus and my old ASUS Zenfone 2. As soon as I started using it the colors seemed off, everything had this weird olive greenish hue and It didn't make any sense because launcher/homes seemed fine. But I'd browse a website, play pokemon go, or look at instagram and things were just washed out and dull while at the same time parts looked fine.
Finally found a test that explains what I was seeing and it's not good news. I was running the latest firmware with the volte fix. The app i used is called "DIsplay Tester" by "Brainntrapp" and open the test was "Banding, Contrast, Saturation" test. There are so many colors just missing on the G5 Plus the gradient looks horrible. The banding you see on the G5 plus was not visible in real life but the missing colors and hardness of the gradient was. Photos were taken with a Nikon D90 and Tamron 17-50 2.8.
The screen was driving me nuts so I didn't mess around with getting a replacement or sending to Moto to fix because I couldn't live with it if it didn't get resolved. I'll just have to keep looking/waiting for a replacement to my old zenfone.
Figured if any of you were having issues you could see if yours is similar, also curious to hear if you're _not_ having this issue as well which means it may make sense to buy once production issues are fixed.
I can't really tell any difference between Vibrant and Standard, but don't see any banding as in yours and think they look pretty decent imo.
The screen is on the less vibrant side than some others, but colors appear very accurate/realistic and the sharpness of detail is very good. My Moto X Pure screen is 1440p with more color depth but it has a yellowish tint to the whites in comparison. Coming from the Pure at first I thought the G5+ screen was going to be too bland, but after using it awhile I like its softer look which seems easier on the old eyes while still being very viewable.
I agree there's a really minimal difference between vibrant and standard. However, you took screenshots which will not show any issues as the actual data being sent is correct so we can't know if your screen does or doesn't have this issue. I had to take a picture of the screen with my DSLR and included my ASUS for comparison as a way to demonstrate the issue.
In the pictures I took, the hard breaks you see between the colors in the G5 are supposed to be smooth gradients and there is a ton of blue missing from the panel as well. This isn't just an issue of the screen being generally desaturated this is an uneven distribution of missing/desaturated colors. If it doesn't bother you that's certainly fine but it's very much an issue with the screen that should be addressed as it means that it is incapable of accurately reproducing colors even if the reproduction is pleasing to some. The banding I'm referring to is in the green section on my pictures and was not visible in real life and some form of artifact from taking the photo.
Sorry, I misread and thought you were referring to the banding as the main issue. I do see the more distinct color separation or breaks when looking at it directly in the app in either color mode. Just ran Display Tester on my Moto X Pure which shows the much more gradual blending (like on your ASUS) when looking at both phones side by side, although it should costing $150 more.
So it does indicate the G5+ lacks in color depth, something I noticed right away but which hasn't seemed like a minus after using it. The sharpness and wide viewing angles still seem like good quality, perhaps because it's IPS. But now I'm wondering if the KCAL features included in the latest extended stock kernel might help adjust things to look better.

That's part of why this confuses me so much. The sharpness and viewing angles are amazing for an IPS panel I'm not sure if IPS has anything to do with the colors (the ASUS is also IPS). I'd be very curious if KCAL helps as it seems like it should be able to, it could also be as simple as a bad color mode on the panel driver? I'd love to see a comparison from a custom rom to stock. I'm very split on thinking it's a software issue or it's a hardware issue. I don't have enough knowledge or experience to really do anything useful, but I'm hoping that providing the info gives others an ability/info to understand and look into it.
KCAL greatly improves the 'banding, contrast, saturation' result in Display Tester, which now looks as good as your ASUS or my MXPE once I found a good range of settings. Even on KCAL's initial settings the color gradients looked drastically better, so whatever was causing the lousy color depth definitely seems to be corrected by it as the screen looks excellent now.
I'm running on stock using the extended kernel btw. Maybe someone using a custom ROM can post on whether the colors are noticeably better than on stock and also test it in DT for comparison. Seems it'd be more of a driver or configuration error or bug than something hardware related, so maybe Lenovorola will be able to fix it with an update.

What we have to help with the washed-out screen is KCAL support available in both custom kernels (ElementalX and Extended Stock) on this forum. After installing either kernel you'll need to use either EX Kernel Manager app or Kernel Adiutor app (both at Playstore) to access the color control settings. I also found the Display Tester app mentioned above useful for checking how the settings I made looked. My screen looks terrific now.
I found that setting Saturation to 45 brings the best improvement, while setting Value to 135 brings another slight improvement.

There is no way to fix this without root or Custom Kernel?
So if I'm getting it right I have to run kcal v1.2 on my moto g5 plus and from there I have access to color controls, is that correct?
Unfortunately, I have this same issue, although I didn't realize it, because my wife used the phone on the wifi to talk on Facebook so I ran out of time to return it.
What makes it worse is that it's the amazon-ads version so I can't even root it.
I put this phone right next to 3 other phones (with all LCD screens to be fair) and the difference is kinda shocking. The G5plus looks like it's been bleached, all the colors are faded, like I pulled some sliders to make it less vibrant and more black/white.
My wife didn't notice it, since she was using a basic phone until she got herself a new phone and told me, that "how come this looks more colorful?" That's when I took a better look at the G5plus.
After using it as my daily driver for a week, this phone got some serious color issues. Interestingly the pictures I took looked awful on this phone, but when I looked at the same pics (uploaded to google photos) on my PC, they look ok, not missing any colors.
Another issue I noticed. I turned off auto screen brightness OFF, because it just doesn't work.
I walk out to sunshine and the screen won't brighten and when I walked inside it won't darken so I ended up manually changing the brightness.
Here is the interesting (or rather annoying) part: When I turn the brightness up, it seems like it makes the whites more glowing, while the dark /black (let's say a shadow of a tree) just either stays too dark or turns more grey, instead of brighter. It's like the brightness control is controlling the exposure and contrast only.
Despite I see youtube videos talking about its 4K video capability, I think this phone makes terrible videos, especially how the camera applies too much contrasts and the HDR doesn't help it.
I also believe, that it's not all and every single device have this problem, because I'm sure I'd seen more complaints. It's just horrible quality control, and that's Lenovo for you.
I tried color tuning apps, but nothing seem to work. It probably requires a root but since it's an Amazon phone, it won't help it. So the phone works great as a phone, it just have an awful screen and a mediocre camera
This phone may have been enough in 2016 and 17 with these weaknesses as a budget, but seeing all the new budget Chinese phones coming out this year, I would not recommend this phone unless you can pick it up for $100 or less.
This phone is going into my drawer as soon as my new LG G6 arrives and the G5plus will be only used as a backup phone. There is no way I would keep using this as a daily driver unless I have no other choice.
