Heres the main question at hand before you read my large summary.
1) Why is my ROM's boot image looping constantly?
2) Do I have to NAND again if I revert to a nandroid backup that was made before I nand'ed my phone?
Time for the long, and mostly pointless, summary:
I'm pretty desperate to get things running on a Gingerbread ROM, if you didn't notice in my last topic 2 hours ago.
Anyways, I'm trying to get cyanogenmod7, Stock Gingerbread 2.3.1, or heck, even eVOKINGS-gingerbread ROM to work.
So far, i've tried Cyanogenmod7 and Stock Gingerbread 2.3.1 on my evo; none of which have worked past the boot screen.
Lets take stock gingerbread for example:
I downloaded the new cyanclockwork recovery rom off of rom manager and flashed it after a *long* process of nand'ing and rooting again.
Then, I powered down, booted up, and went straight into recovery in the bootloader. I went to install ROM from SD->chose the .zip .
after waiting for awhile, it said the upgrade was complete (upgrade?)
*notice: the installation bar didn't move at all durring the installation process, if that makes a difference
I rebooted, and was greeted by the HTC screen while it spelt out q-u-i-e-t-l-y-b-e-a-u-t-f-u-l
Nothing happens after that.
It just shows the HTC screen again, getting stuck at the B in beautiful. Pretty much just looping over-and-over again.
Same thing happened for Cyanogenmod7, I was constantly being looped through the skateboarding-droid figure.
I'm doing something wrong here obviously, because all these ROM's have screen captures from a EVO 4G.
Does it make a difference if I use Clockwork recovery 3.0.0.7/6/5? or 2.6.7?
Please help.
I know all my questions are rather long and complicated, but im sick of being ignored at every forum (ubuntu forums, black ops, etc.)
Or I'm impatent and overestimated your forums activenes. No disrespect to the forums or devs (I thought your forum was really active)
Edit: If I for some reason can't get a 2.3.1 ROM to work, would someone kindly point me to a stable Froyo ROM they think is the best?
Have you use amo-ra?

Thanks
I should face-palm myself. I just read the sticked post and I'm going to try some of his suggestions. He pointed out why cyanogenmod wouldn't work.
My whole consept of the framework went out of the window, and now I think of it more like a standard linux distro, in terms of kernel->ROM relationship.
I don't think I need to have a custom kernel for the Gingerbread beta-4, but i'll look it up just in case... Though I don't have a clear idea on how to flash that.
And to the person 2 above, im using Cyanclockwork. For whatever reason, I like its design verse RA recovery. I might try RA recovery just to see if it works better, as everyone has said it does.
I think i needed to clear all my caches and then load the ROM.
So I did a wipe of everything (data, darvik, cache) and trying to install the GB ROM. My boot screen is *still* looping. Do I need to get another kernel? Is it like flashing a ROM? Where are they at? I didn't see any in the software section...
To start off, I had never rooted, or flashed anything until sunday, when root was finally made available to GB users with the locked bootloader.... That being said... I DO know how to read, and have done a lot of it over the past few weeks, while waiting for root. So.....
I had no problem with getting s-off, and root of my evo, followed the simple directions (thanks to the devs for making it so simple) and voila, ROOT!!
Next... I knew I wanted to try the synergy+god mode rom, Installed that, and got stuck at the boot screen for over an hour, so that was a no go (from more reading I see this could be due to only having a 2gb sd card?) Next I tried the sprintlovers all in one.... Kept getting errors on that, and it just would not load, *I had no problem installing the standalone version tho* Checked that out, and decided to try this rom [KingsROM][Alliance RLS-3] [ODEXED] [NETFLIX]SENSE 2.1+ 3.0 HybriD 3D " The BREED "
Have been using since sunday night, and I like it, its quite smooth, way faster than stock, and has some really nice visual effects.... however.... battery life has been deplorable! I was under the impression it was supposed to get better after 3 or 4 charge cycles, but I have charged 5 times now, and no better... I used to get a good 20 hours out of a charge with the stock rom, and I'm gettin about 6-7 outta this rom, with the same usage....
So...I guess my questions are, What should I expect in terms of battery life? Should I wait a little longer for the battery to settle down, or move on to a new rom? If move on... any idea what I may have done wrong with the other 2 roms mentioned, or recommendations to a similar rom?

Ok now you said you done some reading which is great. Now there are tools out there that will wipe you system clean prior to flashing new roms. I do this when I want to start fresh Caulkins format all is a great one to use. Try doing that next time you want to load up a rom. First you flash that then you flash the rom of your choice.
Now battery life. IMHO if you want to get better battery life I would try an AOSP rom - preferably Decks 1.2.1 with a Tiamat sbc kernel.... Give it a shot
You CAN get great battery life with the ROM you have now.
The best I got on Sense ROMs was with NetArchy Kernels, preferably SBC HAVS More
I attached the one I liked the best. Remember, this is for Sense ROMS.
Edit!!
File Removed 'casue I'm not smart....

sounds like you may need to flash Amon Ra or a different version of Clockwork. I personally use Amon and have not had a problem with anything. I think that should be one of the first things you try. Just remember you can not restore a CWM nandroid with Amon

SDCard size doesn't matter when using Synergy, as it nolonger requires an SD-EXT partition to function. I will say this however, I have flashed Synergy on multiple EVO's and each time I would get stuck at the boot screen(the animated Synergy Rom logo). I was however able to get every device to boot past this screen, and here is what I did.
1. Prior to flashing the ROM All this is done in the Recovery (Wipe Cache, Wipe Dalvik-Cache, Wipe Data, Wipe Boot, Wipe System, Perform Factory Reset Data Reset, <--- Do all this 2-3 times, Then I would flash Calkulin's format all script Twice.
2. Flash Synergy Rom
3. Let the phone sit at the animated boot screen for 10 minutes
4. Perform a Battery Pull
5. Boot the phone back up normally (don't go to bootloader or recovery)
6. Rom boots, and you can enjoy Synergized goodness.
I don't know why but on some phones Synergy won't make it past the initial bootscreen no matter how long you let it sit, without a battery pull, however I do highly advise giving it a minimum of 10 minutes, just to make sure that it had time to properly load whatever it was loading on initial boot.

Download AmonRa from here (this is the direct link posted by AmonRa)
http://files.androidspin.com/downloads.php?dir=amon_ra/RECOVERY/&file=PC36IMG.zip
Place the file directly on your SD Card, not in a folder, just Right there on the SD Card.
Power the phone off, then Power the phone on, while holding Volume Down.
When prompted press Volume Up to apply the Update. This will install AmonRa. I highly recommend this recovery over clockwordmod.
There is also TWRP (TeamWin Recovery ProjecT) however I have had nothing but problems using TWRP and flashing Sense 2.1+3.0 and Sense 3.0 Roms that have Godmode. So I have stayed with Ra Recovery.

I 100% agree with this statement. CWM has caused nothing but headaches. On an unrelated sidenote and because it doesn't deserve its own thread. HipKat does the 2.10 HBoot support fastboot commands? Long ago I downgraded my HBoot to 0.76 because nothing at the time supported Fastboot other than 0.76.

Glad to hear it. Synergy is a great Rom, however I found some things about it that just irked me. Small Qirks. Like to Answer a call, or turn off the alarm, I had to drag the icon to the circle. Well let me tell you what. When your alarm wakes you up after 4 hours of sleep, and your grumpy and groggy as hell. Dragging a small icon into a circle to turn off the GD alarm clock, or answer a call from someone who shouldnt be calling at 5am in the first place...... either way those were the only 2 reasons i went back to CM7.
ya, it seems pretty smooth so far, but damn... b4 i flashed it, I had 65% batt left, after synergy loaded(which only took just under 10 min btw) it said 19%....
It seems nice and all, but not as graphically awe inspiring as the kings alliance, so unless batt life is substantially better, I'll prolly go back to the kings.... I still havent given the golden monkey kernel a fair shot....
Thats just my 1st impression anyway.... thanks again!

You cannot base battery life off of your first flash, you need to give the ROM 48-72 hours to settle into the device. Running 100% Stock Synergy I was able to average 20-22 hours of average use out of my device, and 30-32 hours of minimal use, and 10 hours of heavy use.
I recently have spent a decent amount of time trying to get my inc2 to boot JB without extreme lag(maxed out CPU). I've ran JB quite a few times until one day I overclocked to 1.5GHz and my phone boot looped and could never get JB or ICS to run properly. Its been reported that over clocking over 1.3GHz can break the partition on your phone and even lose root. If u have similar problems this is what I did -
Put the stock ruu GB 2.3.4 on the root SD card as pg32img.zip
Boot into boot loader and click vol up to accept update.
you are now on the latest stock gb without root but s-off will b preserved
download super one click and htc drivers to gain root.
reboot
I flashed twrp thru goo manager cuz that it's what I prefer. Wipe and flashed dkstunna's build 3 with 4.2 gapps and boom BACK TO FAST JB in under 30 min.
hope this helps someone! hit thanks if it did
next I hope to help on the main thread one day, Ive flashed almost every ics jb Rom and would luv to help
Sent from an incredibly running JB inc2
Can anyone verify this works? Not that I doubt you OP, just wondering if this has worked for anyone else?
Quick question.
I have been rooted for so long I've almost forgotten how it is done but I don't remember Super One Click supporting the DInc2. Does this mean it does root 2.3.4?
yes super one click works for inc2, and yes it will root 2.3.4. s off is the hard part on 2.3.4 if ur not already, so be s-off. I'm sure this will work differently for everyone cuz god knows why ics jb stopped working right in the first place. I bet kernel source would fix this too...
Well,
Tried it, and it didn't do the trick.
Still no JB for me.
Frustrating!
I'm running PA for months now and it hasn't locked up or lagged. I came from Venom before. I wiped everything except SD card, installed CM10 10/3, booted, flash PA, booted, flashed gapps and kernel. It booted up just fine for me.
I also flashed the firmware in the Venom thread. I don't use v6supercharger, 1024MHz smartassv2, and I undervolt -50.

I was in a bit of a panic cause i was using viper, went to aeroevans 11/13 jb, it worked for about 6 hours and then the massive lag and boot loops started. I couldn't flash any ics/jb aosp rom, I tried mimicry, dkstunna, and aeroevean's cm9/10. all non usable, crazy lag and boot loops. viper seemed to flash fine though.
I did try the solution in this thread and it didn't seem to work so I reflashed viper formatting using aroma. I let it boot and settle. then i formated all partitions in 4ext and reinstalled viper without formatting in aroma and i let it boot and settle, finally i reformatted all partitions in 4ext, installed aeroevan's 11/13 with latest jb gapps and all has been great for the past few days. fingers crossed.
I have tried just about everything. I can't think of anything else to try. I wish we knew why some phones were doing this.
The first thing I remember not going as usual on my phone was MIUI was not installing properly. It would hang on "updating boot" during install. I couldn't for the life of me get it any farther than that. The next thing was a JB NAND wouldn't boot properly, and then it was all down hill.
Back on the same bull**** of bootlooping on cm10. There should be a warning on the viper thread to not install it if you ever want to use another rom.
I don't know why but I'm not having any problems after viper...
I'm so fresh you can suck my nits...
None of us know the answer and that's the only common denominator. I'm just lucky that Miui works or i'd be sol
Uhh so yeah, tried this and it didn't work. Never had any problems with the phone before I got rid of ViperInc. I was on the latest firmware, every ROM flash was a totally clean one, followed the instructions in the OP and CM10 Global is just sitting here bootlooping. I know the dev isn't responsible for what happens to our phones, but multiple cases of the same seemingly unsolvable problem says there's something wrong with that ROM, imho. ****ing bogus.

It's not the cm10 devs' problem
Didn't say it was cm10s dev problem its the viper dev problem ..its an awesome.Rom but when some problem as bad as this with many ppl affected ..in my opinion I think the team should at least help ..when ppl start seeing this they aren't gonna want to flash this Rom...then there would be no point in developing it unless for the ppl that WANT to stay on sense...all I asked was if the team was aware n if they plan on a fix or a disclaimer that this Rom may poison your phone so it does happen to anyone else ..no need to be a smartassv2 lol I'm just asking and I'm sure a lot of ppl are too

after getting JB to work for awhile I decided to flash the .312 radio, booted and 5 min later I get jelly beans to the face... now I'm stuck on viper again. I tried multiple times to recreate whatever fixed it the first time and I get nothing. I remember reading somewhere awhile back that going stock s-on then going s-off root might solve the problem

I don't think it is ViperROM dev's problem, nor is their responsibility to help. They make it very clear they hold no responsibility for what happens to your device when you flash their ROM. They are also not making any money from the free rom they put out for us to enjoy, so their is no driving force really behind their desire for "fans" if you will.
That being said, it would be nice if they could help and did. Has anyone directly, and nicely asked Nitsuj or any of the Viper team for help?

Doubt it. I went all the way except for S-off and re-rooted but it still will not load any JB rom I try. But by all means, it might be worth trying if you're so motivated. Seems like some things work for some, but not for others at this point.
Just got back onto CM10. Was on Viper, did full wipe x2, formatted partitions to ext3 in 4ext Recovery, fix permissions, then formatted cache.
Then...here's the weird part....since Mimicry was the only non GB Rom I could get to at least boot, I tried a clean flash of it. Used only the baseline items in the Aroma installer (only things I installed were the jb animations, trebuchet, v6, and daemon). Booted into Mimicry and let it settle without signing in to Google. Profit!
Next phase was a full wipe x2, flash newest CM10, flash GApps, then format cache.....double profit! Hopefully this will hold up. Will report back once its had time to fully settle.

Sry didn't mean to say it like that but I know its not their responsibility..I just asked if they try to figure this out..I'm gonna try this mimicry method...I hope I profit like twice

I wouldn't call it a method really....I think I may have just gotten lucky

Okay, so I have been a flashaholic for the past couple of years and been on the AOKP nightlies for a very long time.
However, since the last month or so, every time I try to flash (clean and dirty) a new ROM or upgrade to a newer nightly, the flashing process goes on pretty smooth as expected. But, here is the thing.... after booting up fine, it starts to optimize the apps and I see it going through the entire cycle of apps. When all the apps are optimized, it says "Starting apps" and this is when I feel a vibrate and the phone reboots and does this over and over. My only way out of this is to boot it back into Recovery (TWRP 2.5) and restore my backup and sadly continue using what I had before this exercise.
I have tried various combinations of wipes, fix permissions, kernels, radios, etc. and am totally stumped here!!
Help please as it bugs me to no end when I see crazy new features the newer ROMs are dishing out and I cannot taste them
by clean what are your actual steps you mind elaborating a bit more of your steps, and with which ROM this happens on have you tried a stable as oppose to a nightly to see if it will fix your errors, as far as flashing do you ever format system in mounts and storage when you flash ROMs ???
Clean: Wipe Cache, Dalvik, Format System, Data. I haven't tried formatting the Internal SD or Preload partitions yet.
This happens with quite a few ROMs... I have tried SlimBean, CM 10.1, AOKP M2, PA so far. See the same behavior on nightlies or stables. I haven't tried Stock ROM yet... maybe should give that a try as well.
Let me know if I can give you more information to help me out.
since it seems to be happening on every ROM for you i would suggest you try going back to stock and re-root and try again, it doesn't take that long it just really sucks to do everything from scratch, but its the only way you are going to know where this problem is coming from also if you are on TWRP 6 that might be the problem everyone has been having lately it sometimes works sometimes doesn't have you tried opening ROM MANAGER and fixing permissions only from within the app...see if that squashes your bugs just trying to give some ideas ....
I would hate to go back to stock and re-root all over again. But if all else fails... I guess that remains as my only option.
I am on TWRP 2.5 for quite some time now and have successfully flashed using that numerous times before this problem started... not sure what you mean by TWRP 6 (you mean 2.6?)
I do not have ROM Manager on my phone, will give that a shot as well before resorting to the "Stock" option.
Thanks for your help!
yeah i ment 2.6 lol DOOHH!! and yeah you def sound like you know what you are doing so im sure you will figure it out just wanted to give you some ideas ... and for the record its always nice to take a break but good luck bro sorry i couldn't help you more
It was an issue with the Kernel I guess!!
Flashing SlimBean b8 + gapps followed by the UBER Kernel after wiping the hell out of everything as my last ditch effort I went past the "Starting apps" while I was feverishly holding onto the Vol UP + DN to get into recovery if it fails again.... to my surprise, it went past that screen and there was the start screen I have been looking forward to.... what drama )
I guess will follow all my flashes with the UBER kernel going forward.
awesome man!! glad you got it fixed - Like i said i knew you would figure it out good stuff man, now you got more knowledge and can help others if they run into the same issue happy flashing ! take care
Right. Here we go.
Yesterday, I used HTC devtool and easy ace tool to be rooted and unlocked bootloader. Im still S-On. Ace Pvt Hboot.
Had all sorts of problems. Firstly, with PacMan, which looked and worked fantastic, except no GPS lock, AT ALL, (important to me) soi tried Jellytime and CFX, but all three had issues, and GPS worked on none. I believe this is because the radio is the original one, but dont have the knowledge, skill, or importantly courage to flash an updated radio.
So, tried to flash and EXT4 recovery, with the tool from Google Play. Will not work. Saves to a folder on SD but still boots in CWM recovery So I cant use EXT roms properly. I tried to go back to PacMan, but I cant even do that. I wipe and format, and reflash the boot image, but every time it wont load correctly - something ddoesnt work, and I get errors. Latest was Android Keyboard is not working, so I cant do anything!
Attempted to put ViperDHD rom on to go back to something like stock (GPS worked great on stock!!) and worked ok, with some funny issues on initial boot but settled down. But, STILL no GPS.
Decided stuff it, go back to stock . Downloaded stock RUU and attempted to install, but, of course, it wont work.
So, in short, I have a fantastic Desire HD, that wont flash EXT4, wont go back to stock on RUU, and I cannot find a ROM that will work with GPS. On some, wireless doesnt work either.......
So, if someone could help me to either make my GPS work on ICS or Jellybean, or, help me go back to where I was, (GPS working!!) before I started all this, I'd be eternally grateful. I dont have money to spend on a new phone, so I'll even put some money in your development coffers as a thankyou for helping me out. I just need me smartphone to be smart again, not the useless pile of Sh*te it is right now
My previous post about lack of GPS proved fruitless, no replies. BUt I am hoping that one of you Desire HD gurus will rise to the challenge that I face right now and help. I cant but you a beer, I cant do much at all, but of you help me fix my problem I will, I promise, be eternally grateful. I'll even send your missus flowers by Interflora if that helps!!!:silly: Seriously, I really need someone who knows there stuff to give me a hand out of a hole.
My thanks in advance.
Phil
Hey there. Seems like you've gotten yourself into quite a little mess there.
First of all, I'd recommend you flash BlackICE. Its a Gingerbread based ROM but I know for 250% fact that it is rock solid and the GPS works.
After that, I believe you're going to have to manually flash the recovery using fast boot (hit up the link for the Ace Think Tank in my signature for guides and any additional help you might need)
Finally, another bulletproof ROM I recommend is IceColdSandwich. I personally know that this ROM is 100% stable and that the GPS works.
If you need any additional assistance, feel free to post in the Ace Think Tank. And as always, be sure to drop a thanks if I helped or anyone else helps!
Edit: ViperDHD isn't based on stock my friend. Its based on the One V stock ROM as far as I know, so its been ported from that. An amazing stock based ROM is Android Revolution HD, which I've tested personally and found to be bloody amazing!
Also, the RUU won't flash as you'll have to relock your boot loader. Use fast boot to to that if you still want to return to stock
Edit 2: also. Please refrain from creating multiple threads. I know its tempting but the desire HD is slipping into the legacy stage, where I treat and development is slowing down. If you must get an answer quick, either 'bump' your thread (simply post the word 'bump' and it'll push it to the top of the list, so it'll show as unread. Be aware that you can only do this once every 24 hours) or post in the Ace Think Tank.
Thanks

Thanks for coming back to me mate, it is greatly appreciated.
Ok, deep breath, and after my above and considering your reply, I ihave flashed an EXT4 recovery from Fastboot, but, this will not load. Goes to HTC screen and stops. Im sure I can put it right with EasyAce which I will try now.
I will try then to put Black ice on as you advised and post back.
really appreciate your advice!

Seems I cant boot into a recovery at all now. Tried to reflash with EasyAce tool but getting errors. I dont have a working recovery, so cant flash a rom
Ok, somehow, via the red wine and stress induced fog, I managed to get EXT recovery working. Im now tryig to get a rom working. Tried PacMan again, bit straight off I get AOKP keyboard not working error and I didnt have to go through the Google setup - why cant I get a clean boot - this confuses me?? I wipe Cache, Dalvik. Factory reset - same problem. I have even tried formatting system from Advanced - same????
At least I can flash RIMs now!!
Thanks again for your help
You are still s-on yes?
Have you flashed boot.IMG?
If you are s-on you must flash the boot.IMG (contained inside the ROM's zip file) using a PC and "fastboot flash boot boot.img" every time you change to a new, different ROM.

I have indeed mate, one thing I learned early on.
I have managed to get JellyTime on ok, but, again, no gps and also the potentiometer for the compass etc appears to not work!! Arrrrrgh!!!!
I think the issue must be the radio. Can I flash a new radio if im S-On and bootloader unlocked? Im ok with fastboot stuff if I need that to push a radio, but, I read that flashing a radio is inherently more "dangerous" than flashing the recovery etc.
I hoped the EXT4 recovery would make a difference, but seems not to have at all. FWIW, I also did the GPS antenna mod yesterday, and it hasnt helped either. My gps appears to work, but its very poor. I left it outside for 10 mins last night looking up at clear sky and it didnt show one satellite.
Think it might be time to sell the phone
You need to be S-Off to flash a radio.
I still cant get my head around why I cant get PacMan back on ok? It worked a treat first time, except for gps. Now, it will not install properly at all. It boots ok, but straight away I get keyboard has stopped working, and it doesnt go through the account setup etc.
But the potentiometer works!!!!!
Where I am at now.
Put CWM recovery back on, and tried Cyanogen 7.1. Would not boot. Several attempts at wipe and reflash did not cure this. So I am now running Android Revolution HD7.3. I thought as it was close to a stock ROM it may work, but, still no joy.
I put other halfs Desire HD next to mine and started the GPS on them both. Hers locked in less than a minute. Half an hour later, I had seen one brief flicker of two satellites on mine, Still no fix.
So, I dont know what to do really. I ish I could put the phone back to how it was, but doesnt look like that is going to be an option. Tried the RUU, but it doesnt work
I still cannot understand why none of these roms will work with the GPS when it was perfect before on stock 2.3.5??
What's wrong with the RUU? I would try flashing a fresh recovery image from fastboot, then wiping everything under the sun and flashing ARHD again.
