I have a G Note II with rogers in Canada (i317M) and would LOVE this feature.
i did read that the thing preventing it was not hardware but software, so if the sgs 4 runs on the same os as us im sure someone can find a way to port one over
it uses the front camera so yes it does but if samsung doesnt update our phone to include that feature than we will need to wait for a galaxy s4 rom port
Since that is one of the features being touted for IV don't expect that update soon.

But as soon as the s4 comes out, don't expect to wait long for it to be included in GNII custom roms

Saw this @ sammobile showing a leaked screen caps of those functions for Galaxy S III ROM, and I'm sure soon will be in Note II's ROM.
"leaked" "galaxy s iv" screen shots http://tmonews.wpengine.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/03/samsunggalaxys4.jpg
The screeenshots seen on the inter-webs of this feature has been said to of been taken from a GS3, so this feature is already being tested on current gen devices, so I believe the G Note 2 will definitely be getting this feature, it's just a matter of when.
Yes, even if the GS4 is released, followed by the GS3 update it'll only be a matter of weeks max before it is ported or leaked or just flat out made to work on the GN2 by the powers that be lol.
Samsung has actually been pretty good about updating features on older phones. The GS3 got the smart tilt function the note 2 had. Also, the original note got a bunch of new features with the ICS update that included one hand mods to the keyboard and keypad. They may take a while to get out, but they sure do update features a lot more than other manufactures. I'm guessing that not long after they announce the GS IV they will push updates to the note 2 and GS3 with similar features.
Our phones can do smart scroll. In fact, Samsung worked mainly with the S3 and Note 2 before finalizing the feature on the S4. In a not so distant future, we all will get a firmware update enclosing this welcomed-surprise. However, I will probably keep this feature disabled; "Big Brother Is Watching You." Just Kidding.
I don't see why not.Basically combining the s pen scroll with smart stay.

It will not happen until after the Note 3 is released. Samsung is not going to update the Note 2 with the version the Note 3 will have until after sales slow on the Note 3
The Note 2 will not have 5 this year.

Assuming that's true, that will be when Samsung releases 4.2.2 for the carriers to bastardize customize before we see it on our SGS3s and SGN2s.

I'd love to go full-on AOSP but that means no more S Pen functionality which is a dealbreaker for me. I don't like how Samsung omitted some stock JB features with their 4.1.x TW ROMs such as replying to SMSes from within the notification shade.

I never use the pen. I could for gestures but honestly it is easier to use my finger. I like the size of the device but could care less if it has the pen.

I use the pen pretty much every day at least 2 or 3 times. I use it for my grocery lists.. To write down dimensions and measurments. to make recipe lists.. I actually use it enough that I wouldn't want a phone without one again. I wish cyanogenmod would add in the spen apps somehow for the note 2 version.

They cannot. The libraries required are not open source. That said I can write lists with the spen in a lot of different apps from the play store in AOSP. Not sure why you cannot use AOSP then if you want to.

The whole point of getting a Note 2 is the spen and the ideal phablet screen size of 5.5". For those people who dont use the spen, they might as well get the Galaxy S3 or S4, or some of the other newer 5.0" screen phones coming out.
I always wondered how people try to use their finger instead of a real spen; especially if they try to do it on a phone smaller than 5.5" screen size.
Since the spen uses pressure sensitivity, it allows you to reproduce your own natural handwriting and signature that people who know your writing will recognize. I frequently send SMS/MMS photos with my handwriting, goofy sketches, etc annotated on it. Or, use MyScript Calculator (which has builtin support for the spen) to calculate sales tax, tips, fractions, etc in the way that feels most natural to me. Things like this just aren't possible with any other device or trying to use your fingers. Phablets larger than 5.5" are too big to fit in someone's pockets (even with big pockets) and phones smaller than 5.5" are too small to do anything useful on it; specially using fingers.
Having said that, I'm curious what will happen with the stock web browser after upgrading from 4.1.2 to 4.2.2. Hopefully, I'll be able to keep my web browser; since it has extremely good flash player support (fastest/most stable out of any web browser/OS I've used). I dont think that Chrome even supports flash.

I got the Note 2 because I needed a new phone right away and the Nexus 4 was not available. I liked the lager size not because I could use a pen but because I liked having more real estate. I went with the quad core processor vs the dual core G3. Why swipe with my finger? One because I can use one hand instead of two. I am glad you like the pen, I find it a gimmick.

Obvious the pen will be a gimmick to some, where others feel the need it. I hardly use it, unless showing it off, lol!
I love how much smoother it is to my s3, also better battery life and real estate don't hurt either.

I would not go near a 6"+ "phone". If it comes out that size, it is only slightly smaller then the small tablets. I have found the size of the N2 is a bit much for many pockets, and it is very easy to drop due to the size.
I would have preferred it be between it and the S3.
As for Android 5.0 - what are the significant" new features over 4.4.2?
If the Note3 is as big as they are saying it is, then wow! My Nexus 7 is well.... 7" and messed around holding that up to my ear and completely felt redonkulious!
Wow SwiftKey recognized redonkulious, lol!
There just has to be a line drawn for the size of a phone, unless you use BT ear piece all the time and don't mind lugging around a small laptop, lol!
I find this size perfect, any bigger for me and I am passing.

Nexus 4 only has 6 months of updates left before google drops support, you only get 18 months of updates with any new nexus.I would go for nexus 5 as its still cheap enough an will last you longer.
I heard the Note 2 is really sought after and has a good dev community with lots of activity.
The N4 probably received its last update with 4.4.

...Provided that he has the luck to snatch one. (N5 sold out fast)
As for support... 4.4 won't be the last for N4, 5.0 (or whatever it'd be named) will be. (Google's 6-month system update interval falls right in line with N4's remaining lifetime). Plus, by using a Qualcomm APQ8064 chipset (codes are more open-sourced than Exynos, and mostly compatible with N5's Snapdragon 800), N4 should be able to get ports and development easily even after its lifecycle.
Note2 is a competent and worthy phone, but I hate it for its stupidly large screen and Exynos CPU.

I'll also say the Nexus 4 for sheer flash simplicity and high number of available ROMs. Done may day it's outdated but heck, I'm running a Gnex
N5 wasn't in his list of options. I agree the Notes size are ridiculous but I've heard they are awesome all around. The N4 supposedly has a horrible camera and battery. I didn't think the N4 was a good upgrade when I had my GNex, and still don't think it is, especially toward the end end of its cycle.
The N4 is probably the best option for a few unofficial updates but I don't think it'll see anything fancy. Maybe 4.4.1.
Tough call. I don't know about the Sony either. Heard they were good. I'd stay away from the Optimus.

I don't see how nexus 5 wasn't one of his options as it only costs $349 an has LTE as well as gsm.I agree it might be harder to get one considering it launched not that long ago but why would you buy a new nexus 4 at only $100 less when its only got 6 months left before its put out to slaughter like the gnex. You will be wanting to upgrade yet again when you could have been sitting pretty all along on a N5, an extra $100 is well worth an extra 12 months of updates compared the the N4 life expentency as well as being on the bleeding edge of technology with the N5.
He may not be in an area that sells them for that price. Whatever his reasoning, he didn't list it.
His best option would be a N5. Or perhaps he's on Verizon and in contract.

For me it's the Xperia Z1S
Top end hardware, weather-proof and 4.3" IPS 720p screen
I would start looking for a device in case the Gnexus dies. IMO no point of newer devices with huge screens and weak batteries (such as n5).
Gnexus is still a good phone when you got roms like purity or liquidsmooth.

Cash and availability matters. (Is Z1S available now? Will it be carrier-adopted?)
Put these two issues aside and I want it, just not as eagerly as a Nexus 5 (because I think that Z1S will get much less support/ROMs than Z1 - see the relationship between Z and ZL for reference).

This is very true.
I was a Samsung fanboy when my first experience with them was the Galaxy Note... then on to the Note 2...and NO I didnt jump on the Note three...because the Optimus G Pro was available from ATT and OH MY GOD I have loved this phone for the last year.
It's Durable, fast, root-able, beautiful to look at and use and well.. I love it.
But the other day while talking to ATT about my account (and threatening to leave for TMO) they decided to give me an early upgrade (1 yr early!) so I jumped on the S5 to see what all the fuss was about.
I have to say its a nice phone, MUCH lighter and thinner and just as fast as my OG Pro...I'm not missing the .4 inches of screen real estate I was expecting to notice, but after a few days I haven't found anything that I dont like about the GS5...
EXCEPT!!!!
Its locked down, no exploit in place and it looks like it might never be rooted.
So I'm torn... the G3 is being announced in like 90 mins... and hopefully available on ATT shortly after...and the G Pro 2 is out...yet not available state side.
So what am I to do? If the G3 wows me like it is probably going to do.. I will beat feet back to the ATT store and return my GS5 and use my OG Pro till the G3 is available for purchase.....
I really do like the dust/water proof-ness of my GS5...I've already dropped it in the dog's water bowl and of course, no issues at all. That's a nice thing to have with a 700 dollar device.
Anywho... I'm hoping the G3 really wows the hell out of me, because I definitely like that 5.5 inc QHD display
Go for g3.
Previously I thought super amoled were best. But after using and experiencing this g pro for about an year, i feel it's IPS display is far better than super amoled. Yesterday I played for a couple of minutes with s4. I was shocked to know and feel that how much inferior it felt compared to ogp. And also felt the screen size was too small after having g pro for one year. In fact the s4 seemed very inferior to me compared to ogp. So I can easily visualize how inferior s5 might feel compared to g3.

Depends on what you're looking for in a phone. Pixel phones usually gets released at the end of the year so a few months after the following year the latest and greatest comes out.
Pixel 4XL Pros:
Google Camera AI/software
Insta release of OS updates and longer support (Even Pixel XL got Android 10).
Stock Pure Android experience
S20 Ultra Pros:
Latest SoC
Latest Memory technology
Fast Storage technology
Latest and greatest camera
Large battery
Latest and greatest display (120Hz | 240Hz touch)
microSD support up to 1.5TB
These are the 3 models in quick comparison.
6.2" S20 | Latest SoC | 4000mAh | 30x zoom
6.7" S20+ | Latest SoC | 4500mAh | 30x zoom | +dof sensor | mmWave | +$200
6.9" S20Ultra | Latest SoC | 5000mAh | 100x zoom/108MP sensor | +dof sensor | mmWave | +$200
So really its up to you on what you want to choose and if it justifies the cost.

MOst of the hardware items you mentioned just make it a little faster, but in practicality my experience on the 4 XL seems just as fast. I still think that I get better pics from the XL, though dont have the zoom or ultra wide lenses. The battery seems to last longer on the XL though I have only been through 2 cycles on the S20, and I don't really care about the SD card. And, I forgot how much I hated the Samsung UI. So far, it seems like I am not finding the value in upgrading at this point, especially since Tmo's 5G is about the same as LTE as I am not in a mmWave area at this point.

You obviously have buyer's remorse. If you haven't sent your trade-in already then send the phone back or sell it.
yeah I say send it back or cancel your order, lol
Pixel 4 = beta test
The Pixel 4XL still takes better photos in most situations than my S20U despite having "older" hardware on paper - which undercuts one of its major selling points. Having ultrawide or more megapixels on paper is meaningless when the software needs so much work.
If you don't use any of the other features (I disable 120hz for battery purposes and don't game), and don't care about a bigger screen (I do) then it's definitely not worth it since you won't notice it in daily usage.
Pixels phones in my opinion are complete trash phones but to each their own. If you cant justified it return it problem solved no need to make a post trying to get convenient from other people opinions.

Naw I guess I can see what you mean, I've been a Google Phone guy for a long time.... Nexus 4, 5, 6P, Pixel XL, 2, 3a, now the 3a I bought because it was just going to be a burner phone and last me till 4 came out and it barely cost anything to "side" grade getting the better pixel 3 camera. Lo and behold I actually enjoyed the 3a experience. Better display, camera, and longer lasting battery. Sure the SoC wasn't flagship but it was the latest and performed on par with say Pixel XL performance or something. The only thing that got me was the lack of ram which caused redraws that were present in both the 3a and the 2 from my experience.
When the 4 was announced i was disappointed at the route google was taking and slowly trying to charge flagship prices while chipping away on what made the phone great (bearable). The latest greatest in software from google but mediocre hardware with flagship prices... so this time around I went with the Samsung S10 because my bro also a phone guy who upgrades every half year or something told me to try it out and I did.
The first week all I kept doing was complaining, literally I complained about how the UI looked, how it didnt look like stock android, i couldnt swipe up, this and that because I was looking for exactly what Ive been using the past couple of years in a stock android experience, its just there. So all in all it was a software perspective because i expected another stock, stock look, stock icons, and when an option was missing or rather placed somewhere else I just complained.
Fast forward I started to see it, wow nice crisp display, oh fast speeds and no overheating or slow downs, no redraws from lack of memory, no running out of space because I had a 128GB + 256GB microSD, I can take 4K videos and take pictures without it overheating because it actually has a heatpipe. The only thing I was still comparing was google camera and samsung camera software which once in a while I will play around with the new apks. Also Android 10 did come out at the end of the year about 3 months later than Google but the security updates have been on point to even before Google releases them to pixel and I'm overseas.
TL;DR i think its hard to justify if you're looking at cost/upgrade from literally previous generation, some users here are going from S7, S8, S9 to the S20 so that in itself is huge.. overall its a phase of comparing, maybe buyers remorse, then after a while you start to see what your previous device lacked.... and if you dont see or feel it then maybe the upgrades dont pertain to you and you're someone that would've been fine with say a pixel 3a like I was.. if you added more ram and space i would've kept it longer.
