My phone has been randomly turning off for no reason. But only when I'm on battery, does nothing when I'm plugged up. I haven't dropped it or done anything to damage it. It's just a little under a year and a half old. At first I thought it was my rom being screwy. So I flashed back to PA 1.98 and it still turns off randomly. When it turns back on the battery will be about 25%-70% lower than it was when it died. So I'm thinking my battery has a short in it or something that makes it lose power randomly long enough for the phone to turn all the way off, but I don't wanna drop the money for a new one (broke right now...stupid speeding ticket) just for it to still be messing up. So does anyone know of any software/rom issues that would be causing this? I'm currently running Condemned's CM7.
If it's a short mine has one as well. I'll get a black screen then nothing n it'll pop back on after a semi short wait or battery pull n same about the battery.

Mine has been doing that from time to time too.
Its getting worse and starting to really get annoying. It pretty much always does it unless its plugged up

Well it is a year and a half old phones do tend to age and as well as battery. I'd look for batteries on amazon maybe even a new charger.

not only did a new battery fix the problem, i got one for 6.39 free shipping off amazon and now my battery literally last 4 times as long.

I purchased the official Seidio 3500 mah batteries for my evo and the wifes evo. After a full charge, her battery under normal usage all day and night is at 57%. My phone after a full charge and barely any use whatsoever was at 13% after an hour..... We are both running Azrael x3.0 rom with the newest htc kernel #15... any suggestions?? Maybe my new battery is faulty?? I would expect this from ****ty ebay batteries, but not something official!! Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!

Try eliminating a variable by swapping batteries with your wife....then use your old one again.....if both work well then you have your answer......
Sent from my rooted evo using the xda app
Swap batteries ... if hers only lasts a short time in your phone then issue is with the phone. Then you can start troubleshooting.
Edit: Ha I was a few second to slow!
Ok I will give that a try.... I noticed in the battery left widget when I go to usage, the very first one says "running" 84%, and I click on it, basically it is stating that the phone isn't sleeping when I lock the phone..... could this mean that the everything is staying on when it should be sleeping?
Thank you for tips!!

Ok after being on the charger for all night, I unplugged it, and really haven't done anything and I dropped to 90 % within 8 minutes.... I haven't had a chance to try my wifes battery yet, but im thinking this one is definitely faulty...
Why would android system be at 63%???

Dropping the first 10% quickly is not a certain indication that its the battery....your battery charges to 100% and then, begins to be used up to 10% before it charges again.....so you could have been lower than you thought you were originally ...thus making it appear that you dropped 10% in minutes.....if the remainder of the battery does this then I still recommend you try swapping with your wife to eliminate or confirm

Ok well I just wanted to say thank you guys for your advice, but I think I figured it out.... I think that some things within the phone were not getting along. I flashed the SBC-Net-4.2.2-more-havs kernel #11. I fully charged the phone, including bump charge, and I left it on for about an hour or so longer, and I have been unplugged for 1:44, and my awake time is 45 min. I am still reading 100%!!! So I think I am good to go....
Thanks again guys
I found a old thread on this but has anyone came up with a fix other then not letting phone sleep or removing memory card. The memory card fix doesn't seem to help.
Coming from evo 3d this is my only issue. And I loved my 3d but this phone beats it in everything except that.

What version are you on? I ask because it looks to be fixed in the latest leaks. I never had a bad lag though. But for me it went from 1 - 2 seconds to instantly - 1 second. Instant being 99 percent of the time.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda premium
I'm on the new tnz blend I believe its el29. The lag isn't super horrible I can live with it just seeing if it can get any better.
It's just really noticeable when on charge its instance then u pull it off charge u notice it but I'm not that picky that its a make or break thing.

Well, the instant on from being on charge is a different story than the SD card lag issue. When the phone is charging the processor doesn't enter deep sleep (no need to), hence why the screen turns on instantly. This is pretty typical behavior for Samsung phones. It also separate from how long the phone takes to turn on with and without an SD card while unplugged.
I know HTC phones turn on almost instantly even when unplugged, but i don't have an answer as to why. It could be the processor never really turns off, just really low speed?

Yeh I'm actually thinking the same thing about HTC and so far I am getting noticeably better battery life with this phone. So if its a trade off on waiting 1.5 seconds and battery life. I don't have anything better to do in the 1.5 seconds ;-)

Are you useing the kernel 2.6.0 came with or did you change it? Also try turning on on/off animation under lockscreen settings overall settings.

Same kernel it came with I will play with the animation settings some.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using XDA App
Change just those 2 animations. Also you might try Desperado kernel from Steady Hawkins.

This has been something that has sorta drove me nuts. I've tried just about everything (roms and kernels) and the only thing that I noticed any difference on was calks fb17. It seemed to be better.
I am currently running Epic Venum rl1b eko2 with rogue 1.4 gunslinger and it is the same as pretty much everything else (the screen lag). I'm getting ready to try calks fb21 ics, we'll see what happens.
Edit: just realized that this is my first post....wow I suck!
My iPhone 4S turns on instantly.
Just curious if anybody else's gets pretty warm after surfing the web and listening to some music or another instance was while video chatting with my wife? Is this been the case or do I have a defect. The vibrant I came from never really did.
Yea it gets a little warm but nothing to worry about. Let's not forget how thin the back cover is.... So you will feel it warm.

yup definitely gets hot. Usually it's ok but when it's really hot outside it can be bothersome but not to the point that it burns or anything. At least not yet lol.
Thanks guys, I feel better.
If you are too worried use some app that will display battery temperature. I use wifi tether. My battery goes to max 37 degree Celsius after gaming for half an hour. That's not bad considering the battery is designed to operate upto 60 degrees.

Mine gets hot after about 20 minutes browsing the web without letting the screen turn off once, but it always cools back down really fast. I was freaking out the first couple of times this happened because T-mobile's exchange policy is retarded and slow. I waited long enough for the phone I didn't want to have to wait longer for a replacement. I also have an issue that has been happening ever since I bought the phone. I tried searching, but got nothing. com.process.google.gapps always force closes, but after I hit okay everything runs great. When it happens it does freeze everything on the phone except the notification bar. Then when it finally says com.process.google.gapps has stopped and needs to close, I just hit the okay button and it's like nothing ever happened. Anybody else have this problem and if so know what's causing it?

Universal car chargers are very bad for batteries. You always want to charge your phone more on the original charger. Only use a car charger when it is absolutely necessary to charge your phone.

Sprint will tell you it is a bad battery in order to keep from exchanging your device, this is the beginning part of the usb port starting to fail...I had this, I checked everywhere and then eventually the port gave in and went bad. Sprint exchanged my device.

Thanks guys. Yeah very weird. Never had a problem before but now even when i switch back to gb same result. So this could be a sign of usb port failure? Good thing my upgrades in march. fingers crossed i also land my job at sprint but **** man just to get hired what a process its been two weeks. Had this same issue yesterday after flashing FI27. Started with "voltage too high" eventually wouldnt charge at all. Luckily i have a repair center a mile ftom home.
Dropped off the phone and the rep seemed to be quite familiar with the problem. She said its been fairly common recently. They ordered me a new phone for Thur. Im pretty happy cause this assurion refurb has been locking up and running super hot since I got it.

Did you have to pay the $100 or whatever the cost of the deductible is?
Ever since I flashed agats 0.6.2 kernel my battery icon blinks. An even after unplugging the phone it still says its charging. Even if I take the battery out for hours today and put it back in it says charging on the lock screen and if I try to turn on adb it says please unplug usb cord. And the other weird thing is soon as I put the battery in it boots up with out holding the power button.

If it's the same problem, I think it has to do with the charging circuits. My battery charged fine on an external charger. In fact at the Sprint store the were going to give me the old battery in my new refurb. Told them I didn't want it if there was a possibility the voltage protection was going bad, might have shortened its life.

So I left my S4 under my pillow while I was making a nandroid backup via CWM Recovery and I fell asleep. When I woke up, the phone was still on recovery mode and it was really hot when I picked it up. When I rebooted the S4, a messaged popped up (after it finished booting). It said something about the battery overheating and my phone has stopped charging. There was also a red led light flashing and the battery icon was flashing as well. I can charge it now but I was wondering if there's any long term effects to this.

Although this hasn't happened on my GS4. This did occur on my previous phone (G2x) when I simply left it to charge overnight while running some unstable ROM/Kernel/OC combinations.
It happened multiple times and may have affected my overall battery life and possible system stability. But otherwise it never created a problem. I've often heard excessive OC or overheating can shorten the lifespan of hardware as well, but my last phone overheated multiple times and its been without fail for 2+ years.
I wouldn't worry about it too much, but always be careful.
