I have no idea what's going on, but I can't get my Tilt 2 to tether, sync, or even see my PC. It was working fine one day, then it stoped working only to start working again. Today I spent over 4 hours trying to get it to work. I looked on all the forums to try to get help without any luck. I even hard booted (reset the firmware) and blew out everything in my phone. That didn't do anything other than to lose all my settings and configurations. Anytime I plug the USB cable into the phone (I've tried 2 computers and 3 different USB cables) it just charges the unit.
Would anyone have any ideas or tips I can use to get this darn phone tethering again or seeing my PC in general?
Thanks!
Nathan
Had the same happen to me. I had to use task29 to erase everything on my phone, then my computer recognized the phone as a storage device. I flashed a new ROM and ActiveSync worked again.
Yeap .. I Had This Happen ...
Had This Happen To Me to..
I had to bend the connector on the tp2 .. so the usb cable "fit" better

How can you use task 29 when you're phone is not connected with the computer?

Ahah. I don't know. I never bothered figuring that part out. My Tilt 2 suddenly became very problematic, not connecting to the internet, or connecting via Active Sync, so I just used the program tool and task 29 and it worked out.
I just checked out the USB port on the phone. I got a pin that you would normally get when you buy new shirts and poked around in the port. I pulled out a bit of lint. Saw one gold pin was crossed in there and fixed it. Since it was on the bottom though it really didn't make much difference with tethering and such since a regular USB port seems to only use the top.
Plugged in the computer USB into the phone and nothing. Same thing. To think I started all this because first I need to sync my phone with Activesync and second I wanted to flash the ROM with the new AT&T ROM that's out. Doesn't seem I'll ever be able to do that. I think a call to AT&T is in order and maybe I can get a replacement unit. This one is really pointing to a hardware problem.

AT&T was no help whatsoever. They didn't even know what I was talking about when I said tether. Their suggestion since I didn't have insurance was to buy a new phone. Sigh. I saw that AT&T has the phone for 1 cent but I'd have to change my data plan to 2GB with tethering from my current plan of unlimited with tethering for the same price (damn Apple who made them do that).
Anyone have a suggestion on getting the phone I currently own to work? I'm not really inclined to buy software as someone mentioned (sktools). Someone mentioned replog.exe but they never specify if it's on the phone or the PC. Any ideas?
Thanks.

Silly question maybe, if so I am sorry but,
have you checked through the Active Sync settings on your phone and, if you have settings for the USB to PLC connection, check those. Also start up Active sync on your PC and check how that is set up.
Again, sorry if you have done this.
Seems to be a TP2/Tilt2 issue that's ongoing, the connector on the bottom of my touchpro2 stopped working as a USB connection a couple months back. Lately I've even been having trouble charging it in the car (since the cable bounces around). I'm using a non-stock ROM so I have to find a way to re-lock the phone (after re-flashing OEM ROM) without connecting to my computer.

Hi, not a silly question. I tried the phone on 4 different computers that had activesync on it and the phone wouldn't even recognize that a USB for data was plugged in. It worked fine for charging though.
I couldn't find any configuration for the USB port, so I may be SOL.
I was going to just buy a new Tilt 2, but thinking back the USB connector has been pretty flaky to begin with. Sometimes the unit will work when plugged in and sometimes I had problems. It could be that my phone was failing all this time and that's why it's been flaky, but others have had the same problem. Since I need tethering I might still buy a new HTC phone (I hate to do that since I'm not too thrilled with the way they design the phone) but just not the Tilt 2.

The phone hasn't been out for even a year, so you must have had it for less than a year. So its still on warranty, unless you bought a refurb. All ATT's phones are warrantied for one year. Refurbs are warrantied for 90 days.
http://telephones.att.com/telephones_ui/support/dsp_limited_warranty.cfm
Also, assuming you bought the Tilt2 at the subsidized price, you will not be eligible for the 1 cent discount price. You only get to purchase one phone "upgrade" at the subsidized price every 2 years. You will have to pay full price ($400) minus the $250 discount they have right now, so it would still cost you $150.
Try calling ATT again, it seems the rep you talked to didn't know much about smartphones or their company's data plans (since they didn't know what tethering was), or about their warranty policies.
Unless your phone is very different to my UK version it will have settings to allow it to use USB and maybe you should look further into the set-up on the phone itself.
The settings I have are in
Start/Settings/Connections/USB to PC.
Also,
if you run Active Sync on your phone and select Menu the connection needs setting there for USB.
Bluetooth
Have you try teether with Bluetooth? It is not a fix but at least this would be a work around plan. I can teether with Bluetooth or USB connection.
Thanks for all the help and suggestion everyone. They've been very helpful.
tjhawkes, I've been using the USB to PC for as long as I have had the phone. I guess that's what was meant when it was suggested I configure the USB?
chompx2 - I don't have have bluetooth on my desktop PC.
Redpoint - my phone was a refurb so I guess no warranty for me. I would be happy to pay $150 to get a new one though if that's what it cost. I tried to get the representative on the phone to do it but she refused(!) thinking I could get it cheaper somewhere else. I looked on ebay and everyone seemed to be selling it for $250. So, if $150 is what it cost, then I'm game for that.
That said, I have an old Tilt with a broken screen. I was going to take the USB port from that phone and install it on the Tilt 2 and see if perhaps that was the problem all along. I just looked at the USB port in my Tilt2 and one of the bottom row has a pin missing. Must have broken off. However, I can't imagine that being the problem though since a regular USB on a computer only uses the top row. Sigh. Technology.

Appears I was wrong about having to wait until your contract was up to get the 1 cent deal (check out posts 13 and 14 on the following thread):

I say go for it, since it sounds like you have a hardware issue (pins on USB port damages).

You will need to buy a phone that works on the AT&T high speed network. I don't think a "world" HTC phone will work with anything except EDGE.
I had the same no USB problem with my phone. Would charge fine via the cable, but no transfers, PC's wouldn't recognize it, etc, etc.
Took it into an AT&T store and they accepted it on the spot for a warranty exchange. They did the usual inspection for damage, water/moisture contact & such, but were happy to replace the phone for me.
I had a non-standard ROM on the phone, and changing the ROM and Hard-SPL back to stock via the MicroSD card was a bit of a challenge, but I did get it done in the end.
I was still able to sync via Bluetooth and use the Wifi Router on the phone for internet access for my PC, so overall, I would say that the lack of USB functionality wasn't a game ender for me, but I agree that it is annoying!
Cheers and good luck.
Because I like beating a dead horse with a stick, I thought I'd let you know what I ended up doing. I went to the AT&T store as suggested and they wouldn't exchange it. I called AT&T warranty and they wouldn't do it. The USB port's right audio pin got pushed into the phone so any type of USB damage would have ended up costing me over $300 for a new phone. I bought what I thought was the right port from a cellphone parts company in Hong Kong. Turned out the USB port was soldered onto the motherboard so I couldn't use the part. However, while the phone was open I pushed the pin back out and now the audio works again.
Syncing and tethering, however, is still dead. What's interesting was that it was working reliably, especially while on vacation just a week beforehand. Not sure what caused it to die.
So, I've basically given up. I fixed my old HTC Tilt (Kaiser) LCD screen and now I'm just going to tether with that phone instead. Sad because that phone is more reliable than the Tilt2. Too bad it didn't have the nice screen and a nice music interface.
Ouch, I had similar problems but with my Kaiser not my TP2 so I hope the same doesn't happen. I did some research and it turns out that the reason that micro USB connections are now the standard are that they have a much more reliable life cycle than the mini USB connectors the TP2 and Kaiser use (and lots of other Kaiser users complained of the same failure).
In brief, we're all doomed.
Here's my situation:
SAMSUNG EPIC 4G
I've updated roms without problem many times since buying my phone. I am currently on 2.3.4, gingerbred eh06. I cannot get the usb to work with my pc at all. I'm assuming that since the phone still charges, the usb is functional? I was going to try a flash back to stock ec05, but cannot do this because I don't seem to have CWM installed. I did, don't know what happened to it. All it says when doing a cw boot is android system recovery <3e>
I tried to follow the link for rooting my phone without a pc, but cannot get it to work because I don't have superuser access. I did but don't know what happened there also??? Apparently gingerbreak doesn't work on 2.3.4 from what I am finding. I'm about at the end of my rope here and am looking for somebody to throw me a bone. ANY IDEAS.
I should also tell you that I know the cables I have are good. I have 2 samsung and 4 aftermarket cables and they all work. My wife has the exact same phone and works every time, with every cable. Of course her phone hasn't had any "custom" work done to it if you know what I mean...
Try Heimdall. It installs its own drivers and is more robust. Post 2 in Development stickie of how to fix a semi-bricked Epic.

Tried that just now, didn't work. When I tell it to list devices, it comes up as unknown device and won't install any drivers. tried my wife's phone and it seemed to work just fine. Maybe the phone can charge with a broken usb port?????? AAAAARRRRGGGGGHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
so you have no root and no odin/heimdall?
Yes it can charge with a bad port or a bad cable. Since the cables are good some of your usb port may be damaged somehow. Did you check for dirt or debris in the port?
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
Right, neither works. Its not the pc either. Tried win 7 64 and 32 bit, xp pro, ubuntu, joli os. Nada
Thought about tearing down phone and looking for dirt/debris. Just loking for all possibilities. I did fing a usb port on ebay for about 50 bucks, doesn't really look like something I could replace myself. ;'m assuming that it's soldered in.

I believe non warranty repairs like that are only $35 at Sprint.
Good job Sprint
Just left the Sprint store and they gave me a new phone. Tried like hell to get an upgrade to the Galaxy IIs, but no go. I gave them a boo hoo story and even told them i'd settle for the Nexus s, but they wouldn't budge there either.... Oh well. At least I got a new phone out of the deal. Kudos to the Sprint store and their employees though.
This happened to me at first too, then my phone stopped charging the battery. Maybe this is a sign of the port actually going out? Right now, I'm waiting on my replacement through Sprint without a charging phone.
I was able to finally get a good working combination of my brother's Evo cable and Odin 1.7 to flash back to stock for warranty work.
Hi everyone- I have searched and have looked everywhere. I just wanted to get someone's thoughts on how I could get my phone back to stock. My mini-USB port on my phone is damaged- I can't charge it unless powered off and it can't connect to my PC. Trust me I've tried multiple cables, have the drivers installed on my PC, and its not my USB ports on my PC. Since I can't connect via USB to my laptop I can't use ToolKits that are available
My phone is currently rooted and has a Unlocked bootloader. Are these the steps I will need to go through to bring back to stock so I can return to Verizon?
1. Flash Verizon stock ROM through CWM Recovery. Rom is found here:
"[ROM] mROM v2.0 JellyBean 4.1.2 JZO54K for Verizon - stock, rooted + MODs"
2. On Google Play I downloaded Segv's tool ("BootUnlocker for Galaxy Nexus") to Lock Bootloader
3. On Google Play I downloaded "Android Root Toolkit" to flash Stock Recovery.
4. Un-install app "SuperSU" and "Superuser"
Does this process look right? Any help would be appreciated!!!
FYI I did look at the following (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=27945515&postcount=128) but nobody has commented on it to verify it works.
UPDATE: In my last attempt I used the pliers and squeezed the micro-USB end and my laptop recognized it!!! I swear I did it before but i guess i didn't squeeze enough. Now that my laptop recognized it and was able to use the toolkit and bring back to stock and locked bootloader.
I am having the exact same issues you are. Looking forward to an answer
I had the same problem and had followed all your steps, various cables ect... try squeezing one of the mini USB cables a little with pliers! So the little gap is a little hard to push on to the phone. This worked for me!

I think I saw a post where you mentioned you did that and it worked for you. I tried squeezing a cable end already :-/ no dice

Be careful when you are doing dev stuff with a spotty USB connection. If it loses connection at a bad time (which anytime is always a bad time), you could end up with a brick.
I would also try cleaning out the USB port with a sharpened toothpick. I read this on Lifehacker, and they said it gives a much better connection.

Next time remove battery, clean usb port with alcohol and tooth brush, let it dry and reboot. Micro USB ports are not up to what they are being used for. Stupid Samsung. I don't think I've had a smartphone in the last 4 years that's lasted a year without something breaking .
Not a fix for your micro-usb not working.....but you can download airdroid from the play store and transfer files from your laptop to your phone and visa-versa. Its a free app and works just fine for me transferring files when i don't have a USB cable on hand

I believe dropbox serves the same purpose and is arguably easier to use.
Update: Went to Verizon last Friday and they didn't even check to see if my bootloader was locked. The person didn't even check much other than seeing if my phone charged (which it didn't). I did have the extra service warranty so he just had a new one sent to my house and didn't give me any grief.
Looking to unlock, root, and flash a ROM tonight
When I plug my phone pc gives me error that it doesn't recognize the USB device. I tried to adb to phone, still no luck. I was on cm11, reinstall rom. I uninstall driver from device manager, and adb drivers. Still can't connect. I was reading on the Internet maybe the device is bad. I had my nexus for 2 years and I never had this problem. Adb and my computer would always recognize my device. The thing that sucks my Verizon contract expired so I cancel my service. I was going to program my phone for page plus, but I can't because my computer won't recognize my phone. I had to activate my Samsung fascinate with page plus, but it sucks cuz I really wanted my nexus, can anyone help?

Could be a few things, but I would try a different USB port on your PC, then I would try a different USB cord, and then try a different PC. If none of those get you a different result then could be the USB/charging port on your device, even though it may charge, it may still have trouble transferring data. I have seen on here where others have changed the port on their device and say it is fairly easy, I have not had to do so yet so I can't say from experience. If you are sure that you have the latest Samsung drivers installed on your PC then I doubt it is software related (not positive). Not sure if I am any help, just throwing out some suggestions. Maybe someone else can add some more definitive answers for you.

Try this Universal Naked Driver
If you can work with device over ADB but system doesn't recognize phone, you must have bad drivers or OS. Try linux. I
Well I got my phone to work. I was reading how someone use a toothpick to lift up the tongue inside the USB port. So I use a tiny flathead messed with it for like a hour, kept plugging it to my pc until it connected. Once it did I push all the files I needed with adb to get it ready to get it ready to be program for page plus. Now I got my nexus on page plus, just activated it today, service is pretty good , they only that sucks is their is no 4G, but it feels good to only pay $50 for unlimited voice, text and 2.5 gb of data.

Hello to all. I am emperiencing a number of problems on my deb. Some are listed below. These problems were not experienced in the first 3 months:
1) THE BATTERY
I cannot use the tablet while charging. It does not charge i.e. It needs to be in a specific position to charge.
Also, I am experiencing Huge Battery Drain. It charges 5-15% in 2:30 hours. This happened after I used the PA 4.5 beta 1(Using MultiROM. This stayed even after I deleted the ROM And reverted back to stock.
2) THE SIM CARD
I don't know when it happened but the sim was working fine before. I didn't use the sim very often except for validating whatsapp. But as I tried to validate, no messages arrived at my nexus. I thought that the sim had become defective. But it worked just fine in other phones!
I even contacted Asus about this but they asked me to first factory reset it. I decided it was too big a deal and did not.
3)THE OTG CABLE
My Nexus recognized the otg usb drive at first. When I tried to use it again, It just wouldn't recognize it. Tried using a mouse too (had worked before). Did not work. Tried on different roms. Nope.
4) USB COMPUTER CONNECTIONS
I had used it before to copy files from my laptop to my nexus. It worked fine. After some time, I tried to do it again, the pc would recognize it sometimes say it was unknown sometimes say it was Nexus 7 but wouldn't install drivers. Tried using Wug's to no avail.
Today, I tried using it on my other pc. The drivers installed just fine, but there was no sign of it in My Computers. In Wug's, the device was able to operate fully! It tried using various backup commands, and they worked! But the push/pull command did not work. Though that turned out to be a problem of the toolkit as I pulled the files I need with ADB PULL command in cmd.
So, as some of these problems are hardware related, I am thinking of giving it back to Asus. I am rooted and performing The Wug's Flash Stock +Unroot Option Now. Please if you have any advice, post it here.

Judging from the symptoms, you likely have a bad usb port. I wouldn't say the cable since your otg cable yielded the same result. According to some, it's really fragile when you handle it rough. The port is soldered to the I/O board so either you (1) try to bend back the inside pins; or (2) replace it if you're skillful enough with your iron; or (3) replace the board (ouch!). It's a shame if you have to choose (3) since that means throwing the board away for just one bad component. Litter.
1) The inside pin is fine. The cable just seems really loose. Though the other cables have the same effect.
2)I dont have the skill.
3)Why should I waste any money if It is under warranty?
And usb otg should come at least once, as the tab does charge once maintained in a specific condition.
And As the tablet charges when its connected to a pc, its not a problem of bad usb port

I didn't realize your tab was still under warranty. Nevertheless, the fact that the cables fit loosely suggest that the housing is not in good condition and the pins, in turn, while not damaged, make poor connection (to wit, the tab charged only if held in a certain position). If the tab consistently charges while connected to a PC, then you're right, the fault lies elsewhere, like a jarred battery connector, or the other USB end, or the charger itself. This, however, leaves the OTG issue unexplained. Warranty seems your best bet for the moment, however. Good luck.
I don't think it can be a mistake of mine, so Asus will definitely have to replace it.
Thanks for your support though!
