[Q] No Service - Desire HD Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello there,
I've been reading around on the forum for ages now trying to find a solution to my problem, found nothing and see no other way around it than to post my problem here.
I've used the Ace Hack kit to root the phone and make it s-off. Booting up I get no signal /limited service. I've tried to installed Revolution HD and it works perfect except the same error is still there. The phone is reading my sim card and i can see my contacts.
The baseband version is: 12.39a.50.19U_26.06.06.30_M
I live in the UK and I'm using a Lebara pay to go card on the vodafone network.
I'm absolutely cluesless which radio/RIL that could be suitable and all the attempts I've made have resulted in status quo. I beg you, please help me!

It could be several things. First, try using a different sim card - from a different operator if possible.
Sent from a dream.

Update the radio my friend to the lastest one.
Download this one
http://www.mediafire.com/?sjpp75agt3q3u3n
put on SD card then reboot into the bootloader and it will ask if you want to update press volume up. Just make sure you have over 50% battery power before doing this.

Tried a different sim card without luck.
I've also installed the new radio which hacktrix2006 linked to and it doesn't seem to help on the situation though it has been successfully installed.
Thanks for the suggestions, do you have any other? I'm really desperate here!

try cleaning the bottom cover there are some gold point use something to light score it failing that make sure the pins the gold parts cover are making contact as that is the antanna

Hack, do you have a md5 check for that link to mediafire. I might change my radio when I get my service back tonight.. Which radio is it?

i do not have a md5 sorry

What radio is the latest... And one more thing... Will a backup keep my original radio? Or do I have to fastboot flash the original radio I manage to find on the net?

Thanks alot for the tips Hacktrix, I'm missing the cover for the battery thing which also has two of these small connectors. Didn't realize that was an antenna at all, but i guess both of the covers has to be on to get any reception at all. Grrr all this time and it's such a small thing.. I've now ordered a cover and it should be here on monday, will post update on whether it's working or not. Cheers

It will work if thats the case mate.

Okay, so I've received the cover for the battery now. I still get no signal on the phone so far, maybe it's the radio? I've flashed it with the one hacktrix suggested. Can anyone recommend another radio or have any other things I can try out?

Right before we go to flashing the radio again, have you checked the sim card is working correctly.
If the Signal is still not showing even after putting the cover on, then we simply must start right from basics.
Check the simcard does it work in another phone.
Try another simcard
Is the Gold contacts on the cover making contact with the gold clips on the phone.
I know this might sound dumb but its a starting point.

I have now tried several simcards, the one that I'm using in my motorola at the moment that works 100%, the thing is I can also see all my contacts on the Desire, so there is no doubt that the phone is reading the sim card properly. I've tried to bend the small gold contacts slightly upwards to make sure that there is a connection, this does not produce any result either.
Here is all data that I have.
Android version: 2.3.5
HTC Sense version: 3.5
Sotware number: Android Revolution HD 7.1
Baseband version: 12.65.60.29U_26.14.04.28_M
Build number: 1.05.401.4 CL185058 release-keys
Any ideas?

I don't get that radio, should i rename it to PD98IMG? I've tried that and it won't flash it. As I'm running revolution, which are sense based shouldn't I also flash a RIL? Sorry for the confusion.

Forgot to say you needed to flash RIL after latest radio sorry mate.
lookup for 12.65.60.29U_26.14.04.28_M RIL it should work after
here is dowload for ril

Does anyone have a VOGUIMG.NHB of this. I tried the one for the titan it did not work. My brother have a Titan with this radio & he has service in places I do not, and I would like to be on the same footing as him.. I have a Sprint.. I've looked and I can not find a working NBH for that radio..

Thanks for the new Radio
Just what I was looking for. A 'simple' radio only update. Perfect. Now lets see if the new radio [ I was at 3.42.30 ] is better signal wise.
Where do I have to put that file???
use a micro sd card formatted to fat32. copy file there. put it phone. enter bootloader mode and it will auto start. press power button to flash, when its done restart phone. easy

This may be a stupid question but will updating the radio have any impact on GPS? I know that the cellular radio and gps are on the same chip but is the radio update solely for the cellular radio?

It should update GPS, it is a catch22 in some regions like here in Salt Lake Utah the sprint radio works better for GPS but has poor signal on my phone.
does this work better than 3.42.50?
I live in Michigan (Detroit) idk about you, but here I went from 1-2 Bars with .30 and .50 to 7 with .40.. It's a major upgrade the GPS is juss a tad bit slower.

For the life of me I can't get it to update using the micro SD or through usb using RUU. Keeps telling me the RUU isn't for my model of phone. The last one I tried got to 8% on the phone and then the phone rebooted and the RUU stated I had an incompatible handset. I have unlocked the SPL and succesfully loaded NSFFANs WinMo 6.5. So I know it's not a lock issue. The SD problem is likely caused by the card being 4gb (I have read that it has to be below 2gb). I really preffer doing the update using a RUU. So. My Vogue is a Telus Touch 3050. Does anybody have a link I can look at that addresses my particular phone and updating the radio only? Don't want a stock ROM loaded. Just a radio update to help with GPS lock times (hopefully).
SD card must ben NON HD, so 2gb or less.

I'll upload them to my 4shared site here shortly.
I have the 3.42.30, 3.42.40, 3.42.50 As far as using an RUU I have never updated my radios that way but I know it can be done. Also you may want to partition your 4 gb card to 2 2gb partitions and see if that works. Also just to verify these are for CDMA Vogues AKA Touch. You will need to also use an RUU that is designated for the Touch Vogue.
This has the 3 radios mentions in my last post zipped together
http://www.4shared.com/file/143967240/244c2d8f/Vogue_radios.html
So just to be sure, out of the ones you posted, which is the best and latest radio for the CDMA Vogue? Is it .40 or .50? I have a Sprint Touch (CDMA Vogue) and I want to install NFSFAN's WinMo 6.5 ROM on it but I want to update the radio because I think that is recommended to get this ROM. Also, I would like to improve signal and GPS in general, so I want to update the radio anyway.
Also, can you please clarify how exactly I update the radio using these files. I read the post about renaming it properly (.nbh), putting it onto a microSD card with fat32 file system, going into bootloader mode, then restarting the phone. How exactly do you go into bootloader mode to install this update? If someone could link me to step by step instructions for beginners, or explain it here that would be great, thanks a bunch!
Hello
First insert an SD card with the radio properly named.
To enter BL mode just press and hold the power and camera buttons simultaneously and poke your stylus in to the soft reset hole located next to the usb /charger connector.the screen becomes three coloured.
Now follow the on screen instructions.finally soft reset after successful flashing and you are done.
I hope this helps.
Thanks for the reply. I just installed the new WinMo 6.5 ROM from vin on my phone and it worked. I still want to update my radio but I just want to make sure that the radio update won't overwrite the ROM upgrade, or make me have to do it over again.
This shouldn't happen right, like I should be able to just update the radio after installing this ROM and it should be fine?
Oh and one last thing, which is the best radio version to use for this phone? 3.42.40 or 3.42.50? I am currently using 3.42.30.
My original guess was .50, but apparently someone gets better signal with the .40 so I just want to be sure, thanks!!
Both .50 and .40 work well. .40 is newer than .50 but I used .50 for over a year and it was great.

Apparently Telus have the best radios over each system. And our 3.42.40 is equal to their 1.04.05v.. So check that list and see if .40 is in your range.

You will be fine just updating the radio it does nothing to the ROM. As for the best I think it depends what region you are in. You just need to experiment.
Hi All,
I have tried to flash a new radio on my new Vogue (Sprint HTC Touch) but for some reason I have been unable to do it. I have tried the following:
* Via SD (2GB non-SDHC)
* Via RUU in normal mode
* Via RUU in bootloader mode
* Re-downloading the files in case they were corrupted or something.
I have:
* Renamed the file(s) to VOGUIMG.nbh
* Unlocked and superCID unlocked my device
My phone is working fine with fairly good signal, but I read a few threads that mentioned that .40 has a faster lock for the GPS (as well as slightly better signal quality). I am currently on 3.37.10 and on WM 6.5.1 build 21864.
This is not my first time flashing anything by any means, but I cannot seem to be able to do this for some strange reason.
Any help is appreciated.
I actually got the RUU to start doing something but it stopped at around 30%

Hi all,
Last night i installed the new update for HTC Desire that popped up, after restarting the phone i now cant use my wifi and get the "unable to start wifi" when trying to enable it in settings.
I see this is a cause of the new update and alot of poeple are having the same problem. I have searched this forum and although finding other posts asking this the replies seem to be a mind boggling array of numbers and i can find a good step-by-step guide to get my phone back in good shape.
So my question is, can someone post a very detailed step-by-step guide to essentially get my phone back to the way it was (getting rid of this update) and then installing this new update properlly if posible. If any files are needed can you give a direct link to them

I had the same problem, what i did was : create a goldcard and root my phone again thus returning to the previews version. That fixed my wifi..i don't know if there is a guide to keep the update and fix it at the same time.
the pirority for me is to get my wifi back up and working, i dont really care about the new update atm.

Ye a step by step for that would be good, including the link to the file would that wipe the whole phone ? apps/sd and settings included?
Exactly the same problem for me!
I have a Vodafone supplied desire, which was not locked, or branded in anyway, but decided that I would like the WWE rom, as Vodafone almost never bother updating their roms!
I made a Goldcard 3 weeks ago, and installed the WWE Generic rom 1.15.405.4 (I think that's the right number) and a few days ago, got the message telling me of an update.
Like an idiot, I just installed it, and consequently lost WIFI.
Searched the forums and found a link to the full updated rom, using my Goldcard I then installed it, and it's been working fine ever since.
Heres the link to the full rom:
http://shipped-roms.com/shipped/Bra...00.28U_4.06.00.02_2_release_126984_signed.exe
Here's a link for making a Goldcard:
http://nimbu.amorvi.com/2010/05/how-to-create-a-goldcard/
Please be aware that this will completely wipe your device, unlike the update that keeps all of your apps, settings etc, but it does work!
Good luck!

I did the exact same think as many other people, Goldcard Unbranded my Orange Desire few weeks ago, did the OTA update and got my phone Network locked, so I purchased a unlock code and feared my wi-fi would not work when I put the code in, my wifi works fine? , Im wondering what was so different for me? maby if we can figure that out might help other people.

This may be a stab in the dark but maybe the updater checks the network sim lock to help determine what update to install? It may see the Orange network lock and think the phone is still Orange branded and download the Orange customized update, causing a compatibility issue with the wi-fi?

HTC Desire loosing GPS signal in city

Hello everyone,
I bought HTC Desire few weeks ago - phone is fantastic but I have an issue: GPS signal is loosing in the city! On the open road everything work fine, GPS is very accurate and has fast response but in town... it's another story. As soon as I came between higher (10 stories) buildings my phone looses GPS signal.
What can be done? Is there any way to hack software so phone could use signals under 20%?
Thank you in advance,
Miljan
You could root the Desire and then try flashing a different radio version to improve GPS signal strength.
In the meantime, you can try the following:
1. Before you turn on the GPS, change to Airplane mode.
2. Start the GPS.
3. Start your nav app and let it get a signal.
4. Turn off Airplane mode.
Hey MasDroid,
thank you for this really fast reply!
I'll definitely try second method you suggested but either I'm software developer, I've never been in touch with android since now so I really don't know what is "different radio version"!? Can you point me to some site or forum where I can read about it?
Best regards,
Miljan

Here is a link which explains the rooting procedure in more detail:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=696189
Radio rom - The radio software sits between windows mobile and the hardware. It controls the hardware based on what you want to do. There are all kinds of reports of better/worse battery life, connection strength (including GPS and Wi-Fi), sound quality reception when flashing different to radio versions. You can find out your stock radio rom version on your phone by going to Settings > Abount Phone > Software Information. Check the baseband version - this is your current radio version.
Some roms (like the new Froyo with Sense UI) require specific radios (32.41.00.32U_5.08.00.04 or 32.42.00.32U_5.09.00.08), read the rom posts in the Desire Development section of the forum (http://ip208-100-42-21.static.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=628) for more info
A list or available radio's are available here:
http://ip208-100-42-21.static.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=687464
The roms that start with 4.x are generally based for Eclair 2.1 custom and generic roms, the ones that start with 5.x are for Froyo 2.2 roms.
Be careful is you are sim-locked (network-locked) to Orange - the newer Radio verions will network lock your phone after flashing (unless you flash back to stock Radio version or buy a network unlock code). There are reports that the newest Froyo Radio rom (32.42.00.32U_5.09.00.08) does work on Orange even if sim-locked to their network.
Hope that helps you out!
Hey, thanks for this useful tips...
If I figure it out correctly, first I need to root (whatever this means and it's reversible) my phone and after that I can load Radio and Froyo... done in 4 hours I'm kiddin'
Procedure looks very complicated but with video it becames easy. My question is: can I restore factory defaults after any of these procedure(s)?
Thanks again!
Root gives you super user access to your phone, just a way to unlock it in order to flash roms and make further changes.
You create a Gold Card if your phone is branded first, then root, and flash a custom rom and radio, if necessary.
Yes, by flashing a rom, you are changing the device firmware. When you perform a hard reset/factory reset, your phone will resort back to factory settings of your current installed rom.
If you ever want to unroot your phone and to return to stock rom and radio, just flash the relevant RUU file.

Nice explanation this time, I figure it out
How can you see if phone is branded? Is there any app or it can be seen somewhere else?
Thanks again mate, you are really helping me with this tips.
Bye
Yes, again, Go to Settings > About Phone > Software version. Check what the firmware version is - branded is x.xx.161.x, unbranded is x.xx.405.x.
You can also tell if your phone is branded by looking for any network carrier logos on bootup (i.e. Vodafone, Orange, T-Mobile, etc) and pre-installed apps that have network branding.
If there is none and your firmware version is x.xx.405.x, then you will not need to create a Gold Card to bypass CID checks.

Bye
Ok, take care... ciao!

Don't all GPS lose signal when surrounded by high buildings? They rely on triangulation from satelites and if they can't see the sky ... well. My Tom Tom was terrible in London ....
Good point... i would imagine this would be the main cause to the OP's problem.

[Q] No simcard - no service HELP!!

Hi all,
Well this is my first real post on here, probably in the wronge section too. Apologies if that is the case.
Last night after backing up my stock phone etc, I installed the coredroid 3.2 stock on my phone through rom manager. This installed fine and worked briefly however about 30min later it lost my sim card and said 'no simcard'. I friends sims from other carriers and it didnt' say 'no sim card' but did say 'no service'. I tried 3 different sims in total all to different carriers. My phone was bought outright and is unlocked.
I quickly reverted to my backup and the same thing happened. I've since tried the latest nightly of cyanogen and still no luck but it runs very smooth otherwise.
Have i F%#$ my phone? Worst part is phone is only 3 weeks old and wife is not impressed..
PLEASE HELP!

well, if you flash custom rom, it's recommended to use their recommend radio.
but make sure s-off and eng s-off first.
if i were u, should give it a try, because you can't use your dhd as mobile phone either.
edit :
opps btw, have u tried your sim card to another phone? is it working ? if not working, then it's your simcard fault. hehe
but still, i'm personally will flash the recommended radio if i were u.
The simcard doesnt work in other phones either. When it is in mine it says 'no sim card'.
However when i use another simcard it simply says 'no service'. I will get another simcard tonight but will try the radio and pray it works!
Thanks for the advice, ill let you know how i go.
ya i pray for you. really hope u can use back your dhd , and get a new sim card replacement.
Ok,
Well i collected my new sim tonight and flashed to the recommended radio and ........still no service.
What is wrong with my phone? It recognises that i have an optus sim card but it still says no service (i am in a really good service spot for my provider so i know it isn't their problem).
So far i have replaced sim, restored backups, tried different roms, changed the radio....wifi works fine.
Please help, i'm freaking out, what an expensive paperweight i now have....save me!
IT's WORKING!!!
I have no idea why this happened but i thought i would install GAPPS and for one reason or another it got my phone working. My signal has returned and all is well.....for now.
Any idea why this would get my phone to work?
Thanks for the input.

[Q] Two issues I am .

I have been having
Issue 1:
In the past 2-3 weeks, when I am on a phone call I am able to hear the other person, but they are not unable to me.
This does not happen every call, just some, both inbound and outbound.
I have tried multiple ROMs but it does not seem to help (ROMs tested: CM7, Virtuous Doubleshot v1.0.1 and RCMix3D KINGDOM)
If it matters, I'm with VodaFONE in Australia, but this happens even when I have full coverage.
Looking at the whole next to the micro usb port it seems to be clear.
Is this a software or hardware issue? Is there anything I can do to fix it besides un-root and RMA?
Issue 2:
While listening to music or watching a movie, my phone will start to use "voice search" without me prompting it to.
Is this a common issue or something that I can easily fix? (I have no real need for this, so if there's a way to uninstall it, I really wouldn't mind).
If I need to un-root and RMA I will, but I would prefer not to. If there is other information requested, just ask and I will do my best to answer.
kernels And Radio
Have you tried changing radio and kernel of the phone??
Flash a newer radio and change the ril's in the rom you're using to fully utilize the new radio properly.
You may be using an older radio, and the rom probably is probably using ril's for a newer or different radio than what's installed on you device, thus causing your issues.
flash it back to original and send it to Vodafone, because this sounds like a bigger problem....

I dont think the problem is quite that big. It doesnt seem like a hardware fault because if it was a hardware fault then it would be most if not all calls that are affected if the microphone didnt work. He says that it is only some which leads me to believe it is a software error. A different radio and matching RIL's should fix it.
Look on the ROM description page of the ROM you are using and install the radio that it recommends. It will already have matching RIL's for it.
... a lot of people do the downgrade to 1.32 to root, and forget to update the radio when they start using custom rom's built off newer builds that originally come with newer radio builds...
mind you, the op's problems are some of the lesser that i've come across... quite tame actually
If you're using the RCMix Kingdom Rom, use Radio_12.56.60.25_26.10.04.03_M
