what is this empty space on the motherboard? - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy Note II

i was taking apart a 2nd note 2 I have. pretty much just taking it apart out of boredom. i'm wondering what the empty slot if for.
AND!
if my phones are both from tmobile. and both are sgh-t889. WHY DO THEY BOTH READ i317 on the motherboard? the att version. i know this does not affect the hardware or performance of my phone. i just found it odd for security purposes. The AT&T batch wanted a better home? idk.

i317 is att note 2

i think its past your bedtime.

No, I actually think jpeps isn't too far off. The i317 is the motherboard for the AT&T Note II.
I figure that since they pick up relatively similar signals, it must have been more efficient in the manufacturing process to give theT-889 and the i317 the same motherboards. That's just my guess at least.
As for the empty space, I'm not too sure. I'd look around anandtech and iFixit to see if you can find out anything about that.

i know he's right. the i317 and t889 are both a NOTE 2. i was just saying that cuz i stated in the OP that i KNOW that. lol.
i thinks its just an empty space for some hardware they didnt want to add. maybe a super signal booster. or better yet. a metal detector?

I like to think it is a beer holder.

Any reason to think we will lose our IMEI like the S3 would?

I know its early to say, but when the S3 was brand new to market, there seemed to be quite a few people losing their IMEI's for unknown reasons. Any reason to think this problem will come to the N2?
I rooted with a custom ROM/kernel installed from CWM and my IMEI is just fine.

Yea but that doesnt mean much. The man makes a good point and I was thinking exactly this last night. Considering the s3 is probably closely related... <I just know the next post will be along the lines of ; "no its not wtf you talking about"> I would be really careful and probably just wait it out and see. Let the impatient people test the water first. I wonder if those Nv backup methods and imei backup tools that worked for the s3 will work for the note. Anyone with better knowledge know? And by better knowledge meaning someone that can support their claim. Not the average self righteous xda member...

Not sure, received it that way from an inventory buyout. It was one of the few products that had been opened/returned? Didn't know if there was a common problem with somebody maybe trying to jailbreak and getting such a problem to occur?
If someone had root and a custom recovery and flashed a ROM but it wasn't a good ROM or a corrupt download or an improper ROM it can cause exactly that. Like I said look up ODIN, it'll set the phone to factory settings and you can be on your way to enjoy your s3

[Help] Water Damage

I have gotten my note 2 water damged. I have dried it out and cleaned it and everything, but there is still one lingering problem. There is a water bubble in the rear camera. I have unassembled it and dried the lens but still its not working properly. So the problem is there is water in the actual rear camera and i wanted to know how to fix it without replacing it.
Put it in a bag of rice for a day or 2. That should dry everything out

If you have a gas stove you can put the device in the oven for a few nigths (without turn it on) and the minimal heat will dry it. I did that with my old galaxy 550 and worked fine!

Considering the fact the radio, kernel, and OS are pretty much interchangeable between the t889 and n7100, I'd say it uses the same driver. ....... meaning same hardware. Looks identical, same connector, and same drivers...... you think it wont work why?
Both use the tolte kernels and build tree as well.
Besides, I cant imagine Samsung would make multiple camera modules that are all different.... but look alike..... that wouldnt be very cost inefficient for them.

Based on my stated reasons, the same website list 2 part numbers and 2 different prices.
And to cost efficient why do some have wireless charging and we have to mod ours. The s3 had a thread just like this and you know what, there was a slight size difference they caused it not to work. Will this one work, I don't know I'm just looking at details and made a comment. By the way I'm talking hardware differences. It can be the same core hardware with difference shell causing it not to fit

BURRNNNN!
For future reference i would take each advice with gratitude and not trying to prove one person wrong. Have an open mind. He is right if you did a little more research you would see he is right.
Sent from my SGH-T889 using xda app-developers app
First of all... the only thing I was wrong about was that the tolte was n7105..... for that, I stand corrected.
HOWEVER.....There is no burn as I am not wrong. Hardware wise the devices are identical as they use the exact same drivers for the cam.
Much like you can use the same driver made for a dlink on a netgear, or belkin wireless card, as long as they all are the same interface ( pci / usb ) and run on the same chipset. Same concept. Different part numbers but the same driver and connection = same device period.
Proof? Refer to this thread... you can port any n7100 rom to an n7105.... and since n7105 is tolte...... as is the t889, all drivers are the same.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2018411
Partitions are laid out differently. ..However....you can modify n7100 roms to work for n7105 and i317. As such, that means the firmware to run the camera module should identical...also meaning the camera hardware is using the same components.
Now.....Since we do use the international note base in some of our t889 builds, ( JediX to name one ), that means the n7105 camera is the same as the t889 at least driver wise.
As long as the connection to the motherboard is the same, which it appears to be, and it has the same driver to control the hardware, he should be good to go. Ill order one next week just to try ......
Never go 100% based on part numbers ... I worked for Ricoh as a field technician ( digital imaging + digital copy equipment ) ...we used the same 5 photo sensors for 30+ machines. All had different part numbers but were all interchangeable. Part numbers were different so there was accountability for which models used sensors more.
One more thing. Some one also documented that when they tore down their phone, there were multiple models printed on the ribbons and other hardware ( i317 , n7105 etc ). Im willing to bet that there are n7100 parts in some of our phones anyway.....

Also, I'm not going by part number only. In your rant you missed the fact I said we had this exact scenario on the Verizon s3 and there was a slight difference in size that didn't allow it to fit.
But go in with your Internet gangster self, you're a bad man and the smartest person here.
I'd like to remind you on one thing though. You're talking about the RON being interchangeable. The"drivers" are in the kernel, which is not interchangeable. Try a TO3G kernel on your phone and let me know how that works out.

Maybe it's just this will be the third time I have gone through this. First with the behold 2, was promised to us that we would get froyo, which never happened. Second with vibrant, which was promised gingerbread, which also never happened. After that I went through nexus s, nexus s4g then galaxy nexus. Gnex was a bad daddy phone that still can hang with the newest. I was on the fence whether to get nexus 4(which my wife has) or the note. I decided that the screen and pen were more important to me then having newest software. I knew 100% what I was getting into. In the past I have complained to tmobile, signed petitions, complained to samsux, with null results. You may call me a corporate sheep, while I call myself an educated consumer.

one scenario would be once samsung releases the final build -- cyanogenmod gets ahold of it and and puts together a tmobile port for it -- and they start charging for roms maybe. they are in business now to make money and their stable roms tend to be just that.. i'd pay a reasonable amount for a stable rom with all the bells and whistles. I said CM since they went public as a corp- other modders have great roms too

Doubt cm will port an OEM ROM, and especially now that they are technically a OEM. Their goal is to sell the cm experience. Now that they are a corporate they are now for profit. Now no one knows exactly how they are going to acneive that goal. Ads, teaming up with an OEM like Google does with lg and has done with Samsung and HTC. Maybe they will have their own app store. [Q] Brightspot Samsung GS-3 on T-Mobile network

Brightspot just launched a couple of days ago, and I see a good price for S3 off-contract - the full name of this phone is "Brightspot Samsung Galaxy SIII Cell Phone - White (T999L)". I'm thinking about buying this device and use it with my T-Mobile sim, but was curious to find out if anyone did the same thing and was successful? Do I have to unlock it... would the data work with my T-Mobile sim...? The reps at Target don't seem to know, or they are not willing to tell me the truth

If it's a t999l it should work straight out the box. If not just unlock
Sent from my SGH-T999 using xda premium
It's just a guess, but if it's a T999L, it should be identical to T-Mobile's in every way, including its firmware. Anytime a carrier wants different firmware, they usually give it a different model number.
For example, Metro PCS has the T999N. It is a T999L, only the firmware is different, and doesn't have T-Mobile apps/bloat, but this got it its own model number.
Basically I'm saying it should work with T-Mobile's SIM with nothing done. But, like I said, I am guessing here. If you do need to unlock there are online services as little as $5 out there.
Do you have a link to where you saw it? How much were they asking?

Those are both deal breakers for me. It's just another way the manufacturers can try to dictate how you use hardware you purchased. And to ensure you'll be back to spend more money when the battery dies or you run out of storage.
Anyway, those were both at the top of my list when deciding if I should ditch HTC for this S3.
Sorry for OT, just thought I'd throw that out there!

It is nice to have expandable storage and the option to change batteries. I had the option of the S3 or nexus 4, its obvious which phone I chose. The back of the nexus 4 being glass (fragile glass) was the deal breaker.
The S3 is nice and I've learned quite a few things since I've had it and its a tough phone, I've dropped it a few times and it doesn't have a single mark on it (guess I'm somewhat lucky).
Op if you decide to go with the S3, backup the imei before you start flashing ROMs. There's a few methods on how to do it, you should be able to find them easily.

Wee bit OT, but if you wanted any further push towards S3, Watch Cnet's Torture Test Video. Priceless.

Amazing! Thanks for sharing.
hahaha don't think i'll ever do that to my phone... i just want a good price on a good/decent phone (battery life, storage, and some official OS future upgrades). S3 comes closest to what i need, so right now i'm only looking for the right price

Cool. Congrats on your new toy! Verify its actually a T999L before you do anything to it though. If it's different, let me know and I can try to help.
