Anyone actually receive an actual ota of the new firmware yet? (Not kies or sammobile)

I don't think so. I think it was being reviewed in other areas.
Re: ALL LTE and update discussions here
Just had a thought about using just the modem. I saw posted someplace that you needed to run a ROM that is actually aware of LTE so you need the updated stock for now....
What about 7105 ROMs? I was running ParanoidAndroid 3.1 on top of the last Tmo modem. A 7105 ROM would be aware of LTE wouldn't it? So in theory just the modem + a 7105 targeted ROM like ParanoidAndroid might get LTE?
Not sure I'll see LTE at all, I'm on Straight Talk/AT&T but I'm going to run with the new stock for a while and see what happens. ..

T-MOBILE HAS NOT TURN ON LTE FOR ITS CUSTOMERS YET. THEY JUST PROVIDED AN UPDATE SO THAT WHEN THEY DO TURN IT ON, YOU'LL BE READY.
Too many people asking if others have LTE in Houston, New York, etc.
I'm in the Baltimore area and got the update. In the settings and status screen it now says Mobile Network Type LTE:14.
In the status bar at the top of the phone it says 4G LTE also.
Still waiting for OTA in Orlando.

I see couple people are from Maryland I'm in Timonium area and got the 4g lte status signal but of course service isn't turned on yet so speed was slow (about 3~4mbps) and had barely one bar. I read that even when t-mobile jumps on the lte band wagon in 2013, that our gs3 phones will not be able to take advantage of the new speeds (what a drag). I'm not sure if this is really the case, but I posted the link to the article below.
http://www.galaxys3newsblog.com/t-mobiles-samsung-galaxy-s3-to-miss-lte-yet-another-dissappointment/
One thing you have to remember you always want to buy a phone that works right now for you not a phone that would work better in the future, I'm happy with hspa+ and by the time I get lte from tmobile I might have another phone anyways so I think I'm cool with that, it bee discuss in another topic too
Sent from my SGH-T999 using Tapatalk 2
This is true. I just thought that I would post this for those who didn't have the benefit of reading the other post. For those that don't change their phones often and intend on keeping the gs3 for some time, I thought that this was good information to help them make a well informed purchase. I hope this helped anyone that didn't know and wants to buy a gs3.
My HSPA+ speeds are consistanly faster than my friends Verizon LTE. Plus HSPA+ uses dramatically less battery. Heres my speeds in Detroit.

Same here in San Diego. Verizon was fast out of the gate but they heavily over-subscribed their network and now they are lame. AT&T is the crazy fast at the moment but I expect them to be in the same boat as Verizon this time next year.

Practicly yes on stock 4g shows when you connected to umts(3g), hspa and hspa+(t mobile calls this 4g cause it could go up to 42mbps) but if you changed yours to stock look ( aosp) you will see your phone going at all of them and won't stay connected to one at all times, you might no notice because their 3g is not crazy slow where you live, I have good coverage specially where I live and work so I don't mind it

Your LTE experience may well improve after applying the LG8 update. It includes an important fix to the logic governing when the handset will connect and/or disconnect from an LTE tower. You and all the others trying to test LTE service in the newly "launched" LTE markets need to understand this. In several scattered but related threads in this forum, it is apparent that the commenters reporting their LTE experience are mostly ignorant.
Users in places such as San Antonio, Houston, DFW, Atlanta, etc. who are trying LTE with this phone have faced two problems:
The markets were officially "launched" July 15 with only a small fraction of their towers ready for LTE, although work continues on the build-out.
The new LTE handsets, including the GS3, needed OTA fixes to change the signal-strength threshold governing LTE connections. Without the fix, phones can only get or hold an LTE connection that is quite strong.
The second factor just multiplies the damage caused by the first.
I have tested my GS3 in a city that has its LTE network substantially built-out (Waco). Before applying the LG8 update, even where the LTE signal was very strong, the phone did not connect. After the update, I found LTE service all over town.
p.s. If you really want to understand and track the LTE rollout, go to S4GRU.com, which focuses on this matter exclusively and knowledgeably.

There's already a person with it activated in a test device. He said it has new apns and is based on android 4.1.2, so when you see that update we will have LTE. Right now it is currently only going to be active in Las Vegas, and Kansas City.

Curious, when lte comes out, would it consume a lot more battery power than the current 4g?
And what if your on rooted rom? Will the option be there or will you need to revert to stock for the OTA ?

Tbh id rather wait for the tmobile lte than try and use att. I had my friend at work run speedtest on his and its not much more faster than our hspa+ right now.
My connection on average is around 13-15mps, ive peaked at 22mps too before. The att one that was ran was at about 19mps. Since att is realease 9 lte and tmobile is said to be releasing release 10 lte. Im going to wait and see.
Hopefully the 2 people here can post their speeds with the test devices to see what we can look forward too.

Thanks that explains why my battery life has been fluctuating. Even when I am connected to 3G my phone still displays 4G and the battery life consumed is the same when I am connected to either type. Is there anyway to turn on the data connection automatically whenever a particular app requires it?

Hey guys!
I recently switched over to T-Mobile from Sprint. After looking at the data maps, it appears that I'm supposed to have a very strong signal/connection with LTE in my area. This isn't the case with my new GS4 however.
I get 1 bar at best and at times the signals get choppy. HSPA+ is strong, phone calls are clear, but LTE is lacking.
I know when I used my GS2 with Sprint they had things called modems that you could flash for varying connection performance. With the HTC EVO 4G, you could flash Radios.
Does the GS4 have anything similar to that effect? Do different ROMs have varying efficiency in terms of connectivity?
I'm just trying to optimize my connection. Any help would be deeply appreciated. Thank you!
On an interesting note - my IP is showing as Washington from T-Mobile even though I live in Denver..
I am having the same issue here in Texas. Sucks that there is no radio support and have alternate radios to flash.

No...its set on automatic. It wont hurt to try to force LTE. If it doesn't change anything he can put it back to automatic by dialing *#2263#.
Im in the same situation....kinda. But when I force LTE its all good.

I am having the same issue here in Texas. Sucks that there is no radio support and have alternate radios to flash.

Does not work on my CM 4.3 S4. That's odd.

You might have decent 4g connectivity. Try switching it to gsm/wcdma instead of lte/gsm/wcdma. When you have it set to auto, it will always try to connect to lte. You should get a pretty good download speed on gsm...
